Was that a common thing in the 1930s or something? Because where I go to college you'd be the butt end of plenty of jokes for doing something like that.

Not a 30s thing at least I don't think. Traditional more likely. Besides the only time I had to give something like that to a teacher is on National Teacher's Day. Every kid has to do it.

Ya know, I wish I would have though to do it with my English Teacher last semester, I think he would have found it funny. Being a huge Indy fan I think he would have gotten the gag.
