Hello All!

Now being a Indy fan, I can't wait for the new film to come out next year. Problem is, is he (Mr Ford) to old to play this part? I mean, can he pull this off?

I watched Firewall last night on Sky Movies (British TV) which was the first time I've seen that film (came out last year). In that role, he looked the part as the devoted dad trying to protect his family at all cost. But he did look like a man who's over weight, gray hair and well, looks like a old man. Now put this into the new Indy film and I can't see him looking like the Indy we all love and know.

Sure, they could make his hair dye back to brown, face makeup and even gets himself back in the gym to pull this off. But is this going to help in anyway?? What do other fans think?

After all that, I'm popping down to the Raven for a pint or two and try my luck with the shot game. Cheers! :whip:

Harrison Ford said it best (I'm paraphrasing) "You can still tell a good story if you're an old man." If anybody can pull it off, it's Harrison Ford.

Have you seen the recent pics of Harrison Ford? He looks younger than he did in Firewall. Don't worry.

I think this is the very last chance he'll have at playing the character on the big screen. He's back in shape and I believe dying the hair, so I think he'll be able to handle it this time around.

Ford does look old now, but he'll pull it off! Just look at Eastwood in Unforgiven, or Connery in Rising Sun or The Rock when he was right around the age as Ford is now. Even though it sucked in many many ways, Connery was in his 70's in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. Ford has since lost his action paunch and the Firewall Alfalfa do. I'm sure we'll see a leaked pic of Ford in his gear soon to show he's still got it.

On another note even though Indy is all about action and adventure, I'd gladly cut back on some of the action and add in a little more mystery and intrigue if it kept Ford playing the role for a few more movies. I'm really thinking the number 4 needs to be rounded up to 6! Let's have two trilogies, one for Indy in his youth and one for Indy as an older man.

That may be pushing it, but I'm all for it!

It's just wishful thinking on my part. Spielberg and Lucas were going to make more movies in the beginning I thought. Also, since so many other big franchises are churning out more and more films to keep the story and characters alive, why not Indy! It's probably pushing it I agree. But, I'd take more Indy movies with an older Ford than prequels with a new Indy.

Is Harrison too old to play a guy in a movie who's about the same age anyway?

No

Harrison is playing an old Indy, not trying to pretend he's 35 years old. Old man playing an old character, makes sense to me.

Well that explains Young Indy Chronicles!...

Young Indy Chronicles was a t.v. show wasn't it? With a teenage Indy right?

Yes, I was just laughing at the irony of you saying nobody can play Indiana Jones other than Ford when in fact, quite a few people played him besides Ford.

No, Harrison Ford is not too old. He is of perfect age; the whole film is designed keeping that in mind.

In fact, to me it would've been strange to do Indy IV in, say 1995. Now so much time has passed since we last saw him that it allows a completely new take and perspective on the character. THAT makes the new film interesting.

My god... imagine the "he is too old" buzz when it makes it's way to Entertainment Tonight type shows this year or next. No he isn't too old... but maybe for you.

Good point. I think River Phoenix did it best. He had Ford's mannerisms down just perfect since they had worked together previously. Although, I thought his hairdo was ill advised. RIP, River Phoenix, you were the man.

Eric Solo, I never understood the hair choice for Phoenix in LC either. It was really distracting as he kept playing with it and moving it around. It was almost as if Phoenix said he didn't want to cut his hair, and they went along with it. Phoenix nailed the mannerisms down, if they only changed the hair it would have felt even more like Indy.

Dude, Harrison Ford could turn 80 and still be able to play Indiana Jones.
Ford was, is and always will be Indy.

Yeah, if you don't mind watching an Indy film about him sitting in a rocking chair sipping tea and biscuits whilst knitting all day.

That's where I think you're wrong, Al...
Read some Agatha Christie, for example, and you'll know what I mean.

Don't forget- it's not the whipswinging and the fistfights alone that make Indiana Jones the hero he is.

Anyway, I've heard a lot of people make this sort of joke, even from the first day Indy 4 was announced, with a 60+ Ford.

I remember recommending Vin Diesel movies to a lot of them ;)

Can you explain about Christie's work? Does she have older adventurers in her stories?

I was not making any jokes like that for Indy 4, I think his age is certainly acceptable right now. It's if they want to make more and more Indy films after 4 and still with Harrison is when I'll get worried.

Don't know what Vin Diesel has to do with anthing

I know you weren't making jokes about Indy 4, Al. But some people do though. Some thought Ford was too old, even at sixty.
That's why I recommended them a young action star with nothing else than muscle to offer. ;)

Y'know, I completely understand that you, and a lot of others, will find Ford too old to play Indy some fifteen years from now.
I really wouldn't mind. Admitted, he'd be a different sort of hero in a lot of ways... but I wouldn't mind. I really wouldn't.

That's why I mentioned Agatha Christie. Her stories featured a lot of senior protagonists. You'll probably have heard of Miss Marple or Hercules Poirot...
Those 'heroes' are hers. The stories might not be as action-packed as Indy's past escapades, but they are suspenseful and thrilling none the less. Just in a different way.
What I'm trying to say - I guess- is that being a hero has little to do with age. Older heroes may have other attributes. Like experience and the like.

I feel that especially a hero like Indiana Jones would work pretty well at an old age. Remember the scene where he shoots the swordsman in RotLA, cleverly avoiding a brutal fight? Something typically Indy, right?
Well, he could still do a thing like that at age 80 :)

Seeing Sly in Rocky Six made me laugh. He just looked to old to play that part (wants to do Rambo four next??). So looking at Mr Ford in the picture above, I'm not so sure with Indy 4. But we will see, won't we? :)

You obviously have a problem with older actors returning to the roles that made them famous.
