I have a blog, Booze Movies: The 100 Proof Film Guide, dedicated to reviews, news, and features from the world of soused cinema. Of course, my overview of liquor-related film would not be complete without a review of the greatest action film of all time, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Although alcohol is not a central focus of Raiders, it is a welcome addition to the Booze Movie archive, due to the fact that the drinking contest scene is one of the most iconic saucing sequences in motion picture history. Of course, being that my reviews are alky-centric, Marion Ravenwood is the central focus of the Raiders write-up. She's smart, beautiful, and she can hold her liquor with the best of them. She may be the perfect woman.

Although no film can ever be as intoxicating as the original, I'm hoping there will be a bit more sparkle in Indy 4, due to Marion's return.

If anyone is curious, the review can be viewed here-->http://boozemovies.blogspot.com/2007/07/raiders-of-lost-ark-1981.html

i dont think marion will be the same as she was back in raiders, now that shes probably more mature and possibly even is a mother .although alchohol saved them many times throughout the movie .:whip: also i dont think raiders is as alchohol focused as some movies these days.

And they say Raiders has no goofy comic moments.

They ALL have goofy comedic moments. That's why I hate hearing that argument.

... I think it would be funny if Indy and Marion are able to hold their liquor, but Mutt (Shia) gets wasted off one or two drinks and can't hold it at all.

Well, I'm downing some wine tonight, which reminded me...we shouldn't forget Belloq's "family label", from ROTLA, which was also shared with Marion.:D Honestly, methinks Marion could drink Indy under the table any time!:p BTW Garv, nicely done, succinct review ya have there!:hat:

DK, ya actually had me dwelling a bit on this the other night, as it's something I never thought about really. I had always simply assumed that Belloq and Marion had been drinking wine. Yet, sure enough, I went back and took a peek at the screen captures of that scene and the bottled spirit in question is indeed clear. My guess is that it might've been 'Anisette', also referred to as 'Anise'. It's produced throughout Europe, but I believe it originated in France and it's a clear liquor. If they had been downing a whole bottle of Anisette, then methinks they would've gotten every bit as lit as they looked to be, before Marion pulled the knife!!!:p

Ohhh...and something else I caught, when peeking at the screen captures...is it me or what...the label on the bottle looks to be written in Arabic?? If it's Belloq's family label, then why would the bottle's label be printed in Arabic and not French?

Speaking of Indy and booze, I found an amusing Indy fan flick on Youtube the other day. Hopefully it will be better recieved here than it was on the Fountain of Youth board... Fair warning; the humor is pretty crude.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I rewatched the film a few nights back.

I always thought by family label he meant that his family were big drinkers, not that they produced that liquor.

does anyone have a screen cap of the bottle?

DK, here are two screencaps of the bottle in question, from ROTLA. Looks Arabic to me, unless anyone's got any other suggestions?

Hmmm...I suppose it could be Hebrew. All I've ever guessed at Belloq's nationality has led me to believe that he was French. Not a stretch to imagine that he might've been Jewish French. Might narrow down on what the liquor might've been too. Anyone know if Anisette is kosher?;)

Well, keeping in mind the location of the shooting, it seems likely that whatever the liquor is, is Tunisian.

A short but frustrating search later revealed that a spirit called boukha is the national drink of Tunisia. It is made from figs and is clear.

The most popular brand (international brand mind you) is Boukha Bokabsa. They have distilleries in Tunisia and France and is in fact Kosher (draw what conclusions you will) but their label looks different than the one in the screen captions. It wouldnt be surprising if the one in the movie is a local brand that is not sold too far outside of Tunisia.

If it's Belloq's family label, then why would the bottle's label be printed in Arabic and not French?Maybe Belloq has some heritage from one of the French North African colonies? Rene could be half-caste.

Might I direct this thread for a moment to one of my more proud Raven Troll moments... (http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=16731)

Marion's character was supposed to be liquored up all the time, so she was just slurring a little. The original cut of the film had her on all fours in the background of the bar fight, loudly wretching and dry-heaving. Oh, and spewing right on Toht after he delivered the line, "What shall we talk about?" in the tent. A few flecks of her vomit sprayed his spectacles. I'll look and see if I still have that footage laying around here somewhere.

You're kidding, right?

That was...really gross.

Now seriously, what was Marion's accent and does Karen Allen really speak like that? I'm getting curious.
