Hi all
Just did an updated search on Amazon to see what new info might be listed for upcoming Indy literature. Some pretty cool stuff. I'll save the best until last.

Indiana Jones IV Movie Tie-in
By James Rollins
Audio CD
Publisher: RH Audio; Unabridged edition (May 20, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0739358987
The version listed is an audio book, but the actual book is already listed on the Amazon UK site. Here are the details:
Indiana Jones IV Movie Tie-In (Hardcover)
by James Rollins (Author)
Hardcover: 400 pages
Publisher: Del Rey Books (20 May 2008)
Language English
ISBN-10: 0345501284
It was a no-brainer that they were going to do a movie tie-in. So why is this such a big deal? Two reasons: James Rollins is the real deal - a bestselling author who writes excellent books that are very much in the Indiana Jones vein. Rollins is a great choice - it's almost like hiring Clive Cussler. I'm amazed Lucasfilm is shelling out the bucks to get him on board. The second reason is that this tie-in is a HARDCOVER! No mass market paperback for this film. Great news.
Looks like they're pulling out all the stops to ensure that the merchandising for Indy 4 is bigger and better than it has been for the previous films. Good times ahead....

Yep, I'm doing the Indiana Jones tie-in novelization. It's been fun to write. I've loved the movies (as you might suspect from my novels). So to be able to write internal monologue and go intimately on this journey with Indy is a blast.

Wow, so the tie-in will be hardcover? Nice.
I'd love to see a 'Visual guide' ala 'Star Wars' at some point too, but 'The complete making of Indiana Jones' should be neat. I can't enough of that kind of stuff.

Mr. Rollins sounds like a real pro! He probably has the inside track to the script and script changes. I hope he incorporates not just the soon-to-be deleted scenes Lucas will never show us, but all the other tangents considered for the story.

I'm surprised they keep making book tie-ins of movies. Same with comic adaptations. I mean back in then 70's 7 80's we had to wait years to see the movies again. Nowdays though we get a fully loaded DVD withing just a few months of the actual film's release.

James Rollins!!!
Sorry, I'm about a month late in replying in this thread. But after I read that James Rollins is doing the novelizations I had to post.
He, by far, is my favorite author. I picked up Excavation at a used book store a few years ago, and I've been hooked ever since.
His line about being able to tell he's an Indy fan put a smile on my face. For most of his books, you could easily see Indy in the locations...especially in Excavation and Sandstorm, which are more archeologically-related.
...although I agree that Matthew Reilly would have been great also...Temple and 7 Deadly Wonders are great reads. I based my fan film off of Temple... www.skabatula.150m.com.

I don't think they will sell for that much. Even the new Harry Potter wasn't that much. I don't know what hardcover means as I can't think of any movie tie-ins that are hardcover, but I don't buy them nor keep up with them. I would think they would be in the 10-15 range.

I must say though, even in the spoilers section, we don't really know very much, which is quite amazing. Spielberg really did do a decent job of keeping things pretty quiet. Even with media coverage in magazines so far, nothing has been given away so much. Just hinted at really. But still, I love the cover being the teaser poster. Makes up for the one with Mutt and the Indy silhouette (which I quite like as it reminds me of the shot in Raiders, where Marion turns around and you see Indy's shadow entering the room on the wall behind her, I love that shot).

I would say he's a good pick. I enjoy his books if I'm looking for a good action read. His writing style is pretty straight forward and you don't get too much character depth but just enough to push the story. I would say right now he's probably the hottest action writer out there and would do the Indy novel justice.

So, Dr Czajkowski got the Indy gig! :D
Not a bad choice at all, though in all honesty I would probably prefer Alan Dean Foster or Max Allan Collins. (And I can't help but wonder how an Indy novel by Lincoln Child & Douglas Preston would turn out... at least if they wrote it in their classic style, without the lazy magic that has dulled their later works)
Hopefully, though, it's not signifying a change in Lucasarts' policies regarding writers' selection - because if they began basing their choices on "how many copies did X sell?", then, knock on wood, one day someone there might actually think of giving away Indy's name to be tainted by some antitallented, worthless cretin such as that plagiarist responsible for "Star Wars: Episode Medieval", better known as "Eragon"... or even - shudder - that parasite whose name I wish I could forget, "Matthew Reilly"...

I remember someone posting something about McGregor's website saying that new Indy novels that he's written will be published. Maybe we're getting a new Indy novel series, in which case... YAY!!!
This is the first I've heard of this, but I'm excited!! I agree, it's probably going to be a new series because right now they're going nuts with Indy merchandising. For all of you who are bothered by that, chill out, Indy's time in the spotlight will come and go. He hasn't had one like this in quite some time!!
I hope it's a new series and not just one book!

Amber /Poland/ publishing house will publish /9th May/ the novelization of KotCS movie.
BEWARE! SPOILERS!!!!
Here's the short synopsis /quick translation/:
Year 1957. American archaeologists who are examining the Mayan temple are attacked by the soviet commandos. Russians murder the scientists and kidnap the head of the expedition - Dr. Indiana Jones. And that's how the new adventure of the famous archaeologist starts. Secret American base in Area 51, Nazca burial grounds, forgotten valley in Peru and the mysterious pyramid - there Indy fights with the insidious enemy. The stake is something greater that all wonders of the world...

Yep.
James Rollins, 232 pages.
It's quite normal, novelizations are always published before the premiere ;).

Now we're getting somewhere!
The question is, do we see this kidnapping take place at the Mayan dig site, or does the movie just start off with the Hangar 51 stuff?
Does anyone else get the feeling that KOTCS is going to be the first Indy movie with a very different kind of opening sequence?

But, hey, the US release date for the James Rollins novelization is May 20th, a lousy two whole days before the premiere.
How is it that the Polish version of a book written by an American author, in English is going to be published first? Do they not care about spoilers in Poland?
Yes, I know just whining at this point. But it's... it's just not faaaaaaair.

Although the openings have always follwed the "end of a previous adventure" concept, I think each and every Indy movie has had a unique opening sequence. The opener for TOD was drastically different from Raiders, and obviously LC went back in time.
I've no reason to believe KOTCS will be any different in that it will be unique.

What I mean is, the KOTCS opening does not seem as disconnected from the main plot as the teasers of the previous installments were.

I think as has been suggested before that the Marshall College stuff happens after the Area 51 stuff which opens the film.
What is new is the idea that Indy was captured whilst working on a Mayan site.
Now here's an idea...from the trailer we know that Indy gets pulled from the trunk of a car so has presumably been captured by the Ruskies at some point (possibly with Mac). This synopsis suggests when, where, why and by whom, BUT it doesn't necessarily fit that that particular scenario will be shown in the film.
The TPM and ROTS novelisations both began with scenes that acted as a prelude to scenes that opened the films themselves. That could well be the case here and what will be described in the book will only be alluded to on screen. Or, it could be that the film does actually open this way and we've not seen any footage/ shots of this section.
AGREED Nitzche. I've always thought that the opening seems to be more connected to the rest of the film than the previous adventures. I can imagine the paramount logo fading to the Mayan temple silhouette, accompanied by the skull theme (wonder if that is the music on that m&m game) as we move through the dig before eventually come face to face with Indy again...
But then I feel that we may have seen our first intro for Indy with the hat silhouette in the teaser. Who knows but lots to speculate on!
nitzsche
04-25-2008, 09:40 AM
Yeah, I'm thinking the actual capture will not be shown. There will have to be some explanation as to how Indy and Mac are captured.
At first, I thought Indy and Mac were captured while racing the Russians to get something from the warehouse. Now it's certain the Russians kidnapped them in order to identify something at the warehouse... something only Indy and Mac would know about.

Specifically, it's the hat we see first, flung from the the trunk by one of the Russkie "presidents".

Sounds legit to me. I think thats a good way for the russians to have gotten Jones by kidnapping him, and they bring him back for w/e reason. We won't see this though, it will start w/ him in the trunk like I said, You have those mountains in the desert in the beginning of the trailer that are perfect to fade from the paramount logo to, then pan down to the cars and Indy in the trunk. And like Hegele said that silhouette shot.
I think they'll probably discuss what happened w/ the russians murdering scientists once Indy is back at the college campus. We'll learn about all of that through discussion w/ Jim Broadbent and maybe Ian Mcdiarmid if hes really in it.
oki9Sedo
04-25-2008, 01:04 PM
I don't think that will be an introductory shot at all......I think it will just be a cool shot to show Indy being defiant.
After getting thrown on the ground like an animal, he gets up, strides over defiantly and with dignity and pulls his hat off the ground, and puts it back on. Its a simple "F*** you" to the Russians.

There's some big spoilers in the Indiana Jones Mad Libs book.
There's some very reassuring info regarding the whole Mutt/heir thing. Apparently by the end of the movie the time isn't right for Mutt to inherit the fedora. He decides to go back to school instead of becoming Indy Jr.
The book also mentions that Indy marries Marion at some point.

I do enjoy a good guffaw, yes, but that was a serious question. Marion is in Peru to save Ox, the surrogate father to her son. After his redemption - and a good shower and shave - he might be slightly devestated to have her run away with a man she hasn't seen in years. Perhaps Indy watches the wedding wistfully, but at peace. And then decides to kill Mutt.

Marion is in Peru to save Ox, the surrogate father to her son. After his redemption - and a good shower and shave - he might be slightly devestated to have her run away with a man she hasn't seen in years. Perhaps Indy watches the wedding wistfully, but at peace.
Interesting theory, but no. We know the wedding's Marion's and Indy's. Not Marion's and Ox's.
And that's the way it should be, anyway. Marion's Indy's gal, after all.

So, Jones, in case there is a twist, enlighten us with the details of the marriage, please.
No twists. Everything is made in an old-fashioned way. There's dean Stanforth, Ox, Mutt and Indy's friends /but no names are mentioned, besides some general Ross from Nevada/. There's some jockes involved in the process. The wedding ends with Indy losing his fedora, Mutt tries to pick it up and wants to try it, but in the last second Indy takes his hat from Mutt's hands and then puts it on and walks with Marrion out of the church into the bright light. THE END

Yes, and teasing us with the fedora is a cunning touch. If Mutt is to wear anything it should be a ring-pillow strapped to his head like Jinx in Meet The Parents.

You see this hat which Indy is holding? This is Dovchenko's hat. Indy uses it as a compas, because Russians don't have one xD. Inside the hat there is gunpowder from Dovchenko's gun bullets. Indy needs powder in order to find the box with crystal skeleton - it has magnetic properties. There is more to that... It will be so cool to see it on the big screen! On the second picture you can see that Indy has found the right crate /with the skeleton/.
And another one - the book starts in 1546. Francesco de Orellana is surrounded by crystal skeletons, then it switches to Yukatan 1957, where Indy and Mac are kidnapped by Spalko ;). Then we have Area 51, rocket sled, doomtown, fridge scene... and you must watch the film to know what is next :P.

Nope, no one important. The chase is quite lengthy. At first Indy is 'stealling' the truck, then he blows the jungle cutter with bazooka, then he we have the Mutt-Spalko sword fight, then the Indy-Spalko race, then Indy-Dovchenko fight, then... watch the film. After the chase we have Indy and Dovchenko fight... at the end he's eaten by ants ;).

Nope, no Sallah. Indy with Marion and Mutt are walking through the jungle and suddenly... check the film :P The quicksand is rather a combination of geyser and quicksand and yes, Indy grabs a snake to pull himself out. Quite a funny scene.

I think it's quite good. It's quite funny. It's written in a comic style, I should say. I would go and say that it's my favourite of all. The quarrel scene between Indy, Marion and Mutt is hilarious! Dovchenko is swearing in that one, but not for long ^^.
There is one dialogue I personally loved:
Mutt: You're not my dad!
Indy: Wanna bet, kid? And I have one thing to tell you: you're going back to school!
Mutt: What?! But you've said: 'There's nothing wrong with it, don't let somebody tell you different'.

"no one important" could that mean, some random soviet stooge might still get mulched or perhaps catch that flying blade we've seen with his face?:dead: hehe. Even though I really wanted to see Dovchenko get mulched I have to admit the demise of a red army Colonel via siafu "red army" ants is so poetic. Not to mention Dovchenko is seemingly indestructable and he's done in by a creature(s) so small. Even better his full name is "Ant"onin Dovchenko! Lol! Let's not forget about Spalko, a women who was branded a witch as a child eventually meets a firey end. The deaths in this movie will be very fitting.

There is 1 vine and some monkeys - it's a really brief scene. This is the result of Mutt-Spalko fight. Mutt is bruised... The vine saves his life ;].
So it is in there, then. Well, I hope it's not as bad as Devin made it sound...

She punches Indy and says, "I learned to hate you in the last 20 years."
Indy's a deadbeat dad.

What I meant bu Indy probably wouldn't be a good dad is,
1. His family would have to worry about weather he's dead or alive.
2. Not sure what kind of things he told Shorty but it doesn't sound too good for him to hear, "Tell me later, what happened,
3. He'd probably be gone alot.
Just what I think. :hat:

Yeah, imagine when he's retired.
Indy: Mutt, pass me the TORCH, QUICK!
Mutt: Dad... how many times should I tell you... we have electric light at home...
Indy: I SAID... PASS... ME... THE... TORCH! Ooops, I just pooped a little.

Some other spoilers:
Indy is colonel /retired/. The monologue from the 2nd and 3rd trailer has been edited - it's longer. The novelization states clearly that Indy's father died in 1955.

Actually, Indy was a wonderful father. Did he tell Mutt to eat up, go to bed, wash his ears, do his homework? No. He respected Mutt's privacy and taught him SELF-RELIANCE.
