This is nice for those who don't have these comics! I'm fortunate to have all the Indy comics. I even got a promo poster for the comics that sits proudly on my wall. I think the poster was included with "The Fate of Atlantis" issue#1. I wonder if they will reprint the Marvel comics issues.

I do believe they are going to collect the Marvel series at some point. They're done it with the Star Wars and Conan the Barbarian comics.

Comics. It's several of the Dark Horse mini-series.

Dunno if I'll buy it... I may just for collection's sake.

Though I'm more looking forward to a collection of the Marvel run. I much prefer Marvel's take on the franchise. Pulpy, corny good fun. It'd be great to have them all in one comprehensive manuscript.

Mmm, all this Indy merchandise coming out has me so giddy...:D

Same here. I actually wasn't expecting all of this... new toy lines, LEGOs, comic books, games...

I know I should have, but all I ever thought about was the movie. I completely forgot that there would be merchandise galore to go along with such a huge, much awaited release. So I kind of geeked out a little :D

I haven't seen them myself in years. But I'm pretty sure he has them still. I remember reading through all of them a long time ago and they were all in perfect condition back then... and the stuff in there rarely gets touched. I think among that there are baseball, football and basketball cards too. Not to mention like, a million spider-man and x-men comics. lol.

I harrassed Dark Horse comics with e-mails for months begging them to do a new Indy comic....It paid off!!!

Indy 4 has got me stoked for a couple reasons. Of course the fact that we get to see a new movie, but I am equally excited about all the merchandise in different mediums it will spawn. Indy 4 will revive Indy stories in comics and novels, video games and toys for years to come....that excites me incredibly!!

This Omnibus is good news. I've got a three FoA issues and the last "Arms of Gold" issue, so to get it all complete and "Thunder in the Orient" will be pretty awesome. I will definitely get. Supanova Comic Con here I come!

Mind you, I look even more forward to the Marvel's, especially the ones with Marion in it! I've got the 1st part of the Golden Idol story arc, but not the second! I really want to get the Search for Abner story arc and the Raven's Nest issue too.

The color for part 4 of Fate of Atlantis was done on the cheap, as it was in most of the other tales. They can do so much more with computer coloring these days... is there a chance they went back for a deluxe enhancement?

The 'Further Adventures' Omnibus (omnibi?) and the movie adaptions should at least go to solid colors.

I agree 100%. Though I am really looking forward to the new IJ film, I may be looking forward even more to the new YIJC DVD's, the reprints of the Marvel comic, new IJ figures, etc. I think it's fairly obvious to everyone that if it weren't for the new film, we would almost certainly be waiting a lot longer for all of these re-issues (we may even have waited forever - ha ha).

I hope you guys do realize that the Omnibusses are smaller in size than regular TPBs, about the size of a Reader's Digest magazine (size, not length).

And there will probably only be 1 cover in the book per series and definetly not full size.

I checked out the new Star Wars Tales of the Jedi Omnibus and it's real tiny too. Dark Horse keeps pushing the smaller manga size format and it's affected the omnibuses line.

Thanks for the info. I knew about the smaller size of the book.

However, I didn't know about the covers - do you mean that they won't reprint all of the covers of each individual comic they are reprinting? If so, that would be unfortunate. I'm a completist, and it's the covers that really make some comics exciting (even if the covers don't match the action inside completely).

This would especially be unfortunate in the Marvel comic Indiana Jones series, since Marvel typically had some fantastic (though exaggerated) covers. With the Dark Horse IJ series, it seemed like some of the covers were reproductions from scenes in the films. Though cool, they weren't always that original.

According to Amazon, the Star Wars Omnibusses are 8.9 x 6 inches so if the Indy ones are the same size they shouldn't be that bad...slightly bigger than a Reader's Digest.

Yea, alot of people call the smaller format the "brick" format where the size is literally the size of a brick. I've seen the new omnibuses from Dark Horse and the art panels have real shrinkage to them due to the new format.

I prefer the regular Trade paperback size or even an "Absolute Edition" format over the new "brick" books.

The details in the Indy comics (which ceased a decade ago) aren't that lavish. The Marvels are worse. They could reprint even smaller and lose nothing. But the covers are easily the best feature and must be included.

Indy returns in 2008 with Dark Horse's Indiana Jones Omnibus!
Monday, 03 December 2007

This February, Indiana Jones is back in a massive volume recounting three of the most important discoveries in the career of the twentieth century’s most adventurous archaeologist!

Containing the long-out-of-print stories, “Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis,” “Thunder in the Orient,” and “Indiana Jones and the Arms of Gold,” this substantial anthology follows the intrepid Dr. Jones as he travels from Africa to Asia and nearly everywhere in between in a race against the Nazis for the world’s greatest treasures.

From lost cities, to ancient temples, to artifacts of legendary power, Indy will stop at nothing to preserve these prizes from the grasp of Adolf Hitler’s evil minions. With Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in theaters in May 2008, now’s the best time to catch up or brush up on the story, and the Indiana Jones Omnibus I is the perfect starting point.

“Three amazing adventures no longer lost in time,” says Jeremy Barlow, editor for the collection. “For Indiana Jones fans and readers rediscovering these stories, the release of this collection will be like unearthing forgotten treasure.”

The Indiana Jones Omnibus I collects the first three stories of the Indiana Jones comics series, and will be available in February 2008 for $24.95. Fans can be expecting new volumes of the omnibus to be released on a quarterly basis throughout the year. A comics adaptation of the film will be released simultaneously with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in May, followed immediately by an all-new Indiana Jones comics series. Indiana Jones Adventures—a digest-sized graphic novel designed for the enjoyment of young readers as well as adults—will be available this summer.

I thought this would be more like the reprints of Spawn they've been doing for the past few years in TPB form. Why do Omnibuses if they're smaller? It certainly doesn't have that much cheaper of a price tag!

Indiana Jones' 15 (SMALL) issues for $25 vs Spawn's 20 (NORMAL) issues for $30. What a rip.... I'm getting them anyways! :p I don't have any of the comics and would like to read them.

So why does the Diamond Comics website not list the Indiana Jones Omnibus as either a new release or an upcoming release (for Feb. 13)?

http://previews.diamondcomics.com/public/default.asp?t=1&m=1&c=6&s=430&ai=66536

The Omnibus isn't even listed as a Dark Horse Comics product shipping in February: http://previews.diamondcomics.com/public/default.asp?t=1&m=1&c=23&s=125&ai=65845&ssd=

I used to sell to Amazon (and now manage the current sales person) and I can tell you that all of the book data that appears on the site is put there by the publisher. Amazon is just the sales vehicle. So the updated pub date must have been submitted by Dark Horse. There are all sorts of potential reasons for the change. Maybe they wanted to release to collection closer to the trailer release date? Or they had a delay at the printer. Happens to regular books all the time.

And hey, if you happen to go to Amazon UK, search for books using the terms "Fortune and Glory." One of the top results should be the book that the company I work for is putting out just prior to the movie. Kinda fun. You'll know it when you see it. The title idea was mine, I'm happy to say! It's not yet on the US site, but should be soon. Note, we've changed the subtitle from how it appears on the cover, as the original sub (not my idea) sounds pretty silly. Here's the link:

Thanks for the head's up. I'm glad to see it's finally listed. Hopefully the cover will be up soon. I'm going to ask the sales rep to get Indy listed as a key search term for the book so that it comes up when people search for books on "Indiana Jones."

I believe the U.S. edition will be available toward the end of March. The publisher is named F+W Publications and the imprint is David & Charles. We also do Writer's Digest titles, Impact Books (fantasy and graphic novel art books), and a bunch of other stuff. Lots of magazines too, like Scrye and Comics Buyers Guide. David & Charles does all of our history related titles.

I was pleasantly surprised by the omnibus. I was expecting it to be kinda lousy, but except for some dialogue problems(I thought some of Indy's dialogue was out of character at times, such as him saying EUREKA! too much), and the art being a bit inconsistent, it was pretty good. I may have disliked FOA more that I normally would have because of playing the game, but as soon as I let go of every tiny detail that they changed from the game, I enjoyed it.

Its fine. I give a pass to this...the art is not as bad as some say. If you look at some stuff by Alan Moore (Watchmen), etc...the art is under par but its the story that makes it worth while.

The Indy comics of the mid-90s have better stories than the novels, IMO.

It is an enjoyable book...probably more violent then the films themselves.

Indy. Treasures. Violence. Women. What else could you ask for? Well worth the purchase price.

I own the omnibus, the first two FoA issues, the first Spear of Destiny, and both Golden Fleese. Out of all Indy comics I've ever read (Marvel included), I defiantly think the Golden Fleece is the best. The art is by far the best (Indy has stubble; looks like Indy), and the writing is very good as well. I strongly recommend this comic to Indyfans who were dissapointed with other comics.

$37.50? Crap, that's expensive. I've really got to save up. I was hoping it was $25. The comic store I go to sells their stuff relatively cheaper than the RRP, so I might be able to save. What's even stranger, they're selling the Disney figures at only $14 a piece. Oh well. I going to have to be as tight-fisted as ever. I'm real surprised the omnibus didn't include the original covers to the comics but it did include the original Dave Dorman cover painting to the rare "Fate of Atlantis" Trade!

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc300/yodazone/ijatpb.jpg

I'm sure Dark Horse has plans for the original covers especially if they're releasing so many new Indy titles this Summer. They can release them as one of their "Panel 2 Panel" books like they did for the Star Wars, Buffy & Aliens books. The "Panel 2 Panel" series collects best cover artwork in an oversized book.

Sydney's good. I would move there if I could afford it. But, the film industry being better... I wouldn't say that. I don't know much about the Canadian industry, but I would think it's probably as good as Canada. I'm a grad film student that's trying to break in and learning all the things I've been learning about the state of our industry, we pretty much survive on American features being made here, television, music videos and commercials. We only make ten features a year funded by the government. Sydney is the hub of all the stuff getting made, so in terms of Sydney itself, good decision. There is no studio system here except in television. Actually, television is the one that thrives and why I started to turn my attention there rather than features. Consistent work and ideas and interest in the area, is why I'm going into television.

It's nice to get an inside of view on things
The Canadian film industry has absolutely nothing to it's name
There are only a handful of Canadian Directors James Cameron and Paul Haggis being the only major ones that come to mind
The only big thing we have here is Vancouver which is only used by Hollywood not the Canadian film industry
Australia just seems that it would be an great place to start considering the amoung of talent that is educated and born there
Peter Weir, Baz Luhrmann, George Miller, Mel Gibson, Jocelyn Moorhouse are a few names that come to mind
I also like how Hollywood goes there to shoot major films likes Star Wars, Superman Returns and The Matrix, rather then small ones over here
The only big one that I can think of is Catwomen and well... that's just embarrasing

Finally got the Omnibus, luckily it was out a week earlier then it was supposed to be out over here. Tis Good, though, unlike the game, the comic version of FOA is incredibly confusing, they just flit all over the place in an incredibly random fashion, and since when could Indy fly a sea plane? indy really didn't seem like Indy throughout, rude to people who don't understand English in that annoying obnoxious tourist way, fairly blood thirsty, and well, not that Indiana esque methinks.

Much better was Thunder in the Orient, except for the ending, where the final faith of the covenent is a bit mysterious, and thats putting it very very nicely.

I really like arms of Gold, was a bit unsure of the art at first, and it is a little dull, and that cover is hideous, but whereas the man cannot draw faces, his bodies and movement was very very good, made the fights a joy to look at, really liked the bit where Indy falls of the ship and grabs that anchor. Good Characterisation too.

Crack that whip
04-28-2008, 06:21 PM
Well, it depends upon how you view the character and what you think an Indy story should be like.

The Marvels are looser in many ways. They tend to involve a lot more MacGuffin quests of the authors' invention, while the Dark Horse ones were more inclined toward basing Indy adventures around existing myths and legends. The Dark Horse ones are more... thoughtfully planned; Dark Horse's were all miniseries, each with a defined story arc, and gave the impression of having been done when somebody had had a specific story idea they wanted to do and that prompted DH to do a(nother) Indy series, whereas Marvel had a regular, ongoing monthly series, and tended to have stories that were more 'whipped up' ;) as needed. Dark Horse also benefited from some years of advancing reader expectations of what a licensed comic series could and should be, and the DH comics seem to have had more care put into them with regard to fitting them into a detailed Indy timeline and canon, but in Marvel's defense there was hardly anything for them to worry about when theirs started - just the first two movies, really.

If you order $100 or more worth of stuff from the online Indy store (http://shop.indianajones.com/), they'll add in a free vintage Marvel Indy comic, which may help give you a taste of what the Marvels were like if you don't have any, without you having to make any special investment of time or money to get them. They don't distinguish between comics, though - they just give you a randomly selected comic (it could even be from one of the movie adaptations, or any one of the 34 issues of the regular series), so it's hardly the ideal way to go about trying to plug a hole in one's collection if one already has most of them.

Very true - the Marvel IJ comics are a lot looser than the DH series, but I prefer them because of this. These Marvel stories are a lot more off-the-cuff, and impromptu, which to me makes them more compelling (just my opinion, though). This website (theraider.net) has a description of all of the Marvel Indy comics, and these are worth reading if anyone is interested.

BTW, one of the reasons I am talking up these Marvel Indy comics so much is because I really want DH to reprint them (something DH hasn't officially announced yet). I haven't read these comics for years, and would much prefer to have them re-colored and reprinted on high-quality paper than to have to search for the original issues which are printed on cheap newsprint.

It looks like release order considering their first 3 releases were Fate Of Atlantis, Thunder in the Orient, then Arms of Gold. (With the Young Indy comics books being released in between FoA and TitO)

And considering Omnibus vol. 2 finishes off the entire Dark Horse run, I'm hoping right after that they'll start working on either the Marvel Omnibuses or a Young Indy Omnibus.

Hi i'm new here, best site on the net about Indiana jones, congrats to everyone.

Recently (on the indy merchandise frenzy the new film has unleashed :D ) I bought from an internet store in UK the 1st Omnibus of the Dark horse comics. I was expecting a Titan books reprint (that's the version i ordered), but i got a Dark Horse US print with a barcode sticker from titan books with the price in pounds, and the UK ISBN, over the printed barcode on the cover.

Is this normal? I would like to order the 2nd Omnibus, but i want the two to be of the same publisher, so if anyone can help me i would be most grateful, i'll order from amazon.com, but i would prefer to order from the same UK site since i dont want to put the credit card number on more sites than necessary and the shipping days are less.

Thanks to everyone :)

It's normal.
Depending on the specific publication and the retailer, you'll either find the UK edition which is sublicensed to Titan for British publication, or the imported US edition with stickers overlaying the price and barcode. All of the Indy omnibus editions I've seen so far have simply been US editions with Titan's stickers over the barcodes, so I'm not sure if Titan actually printed a UK edition as such.
Generally I only buy the US editions, but it's a matter of personal choice.
Specialized comic book stores stock the US direct import editions without the annoying stickers.
