View Full Version : The Least Crusade?

Firstly, Last Crusade is an incredible film. However, I feel that Indy was let off too lightly in this adventure. He is not as battered and bruised as in the previous films. Hell, he doesn't even accumulate a decent growth of stubble!
Indy is meant to look incredibly worn by these adventures, I just feel he was too clean in this movie.

That's part of the film...he has a necktie, he's wearing a suit in an action scene...Last Crusade does some pretty interesting stuff about civilization, and that's part of it.
Also, he does almost fall off of a cliff...

I think Last Crusade is by far the weakest of the 3..... It's more of a parody of itself than anything else....

Eh, I'm sure if I agree. He gets pretty beat down during the tank sequence. After climbing up the cliff, he's about ready to collapse. Blocks more than a few punches with his face.
Still, it's nothing compared to what he goes through in Temple of Doom. He gets flogged in Temple. LITERALLY. Oh my. Poor Indy.
Hell, he doesn't even accumulate a decent growth of stubble!
I noticed that too, and missed the scruff. But like Attila said, he's wearing a necktie, and I don't think it would've jelled. Indy also got rather scummy in the catacombs, however briefly. So he does get a lil' dirty.

That is the sad truth, yes. :(

Indy is wearing a tie and it may not look right with stubble but this would not stop growth appearing on his face! I think this is a considerable error. At least in Temple of Doom we are given a reason - he can't find his razor. Crusade must have had Indy shaving after every battle.
...Throw a guy from a zeppelin and then take a shave because I'm wearing a tie.

Maybe he was trying to impress papa Jones. He's ever so desperate for any kind of positive affirmation of his own worth from his dad, and he's not about to hand him something more to critique. (i.e. his scruffy face)
And I love that bit in Temple of Doom when he's shouting at Shorty for is razor. I liked that the took those seconds to explain why he wouldn't shave beforing meeting the Maharajah.

I would almost agree to a point because I find the Indy films are semi-parodies of the action-adventure serials of yesteryear. Even Temple of Doom has a near-parodic degrees of silliness, like the twist on the marksman vs. the swordsman gag. Or the Toht character in Raiders using what looks like a nunchaku of sorts as a coat hanger. There are serious moments strewn within the Indy flicks but there are some truly funny bits as well.

Impress his daddy. Good point. A tad unrealistic but a good point. Actually, he should be growing a full beard like his dad!!!!!!!!

He doesn't get nearly as battered in Crusade as in the previous films. In Raiders, he gets beaten to sh*t by Pat Roach, shot in the arm, kicked and punched in the bullet wound, thrown through a window, dragged behind a speeding truck....the wounds he has in Katanga's ship speak for themselves. In Temple of Doom he gets poisoned and beaten up in a Shanghai restaurant, whipped and tortured in the temple itself, beaten up by Pat Roach yet again, burns his foot trying to stop the mine cart, and nearly has his heart torn out.
He gets a nasty cut on his face in Crusade's tank chase, but thats about it.
As for the tie during the Castle Brunwald scene, I never got that either.

Hey
Am I the only one who feels that LC was Indy watered down? Whereas Raiders was gritty and Temple was just brutal and dark, LC is like making Indy more PC. The atmosphere of the film (except in the moments between Indy and Henry, Sr) seems almost like a parody of what the series is about or was about in ToD and RotLA. It just seems like they toned down the atmosphere of the film and the character of Indy in this film. He also looks pretty different; from the lack of stubble on his face (which imo is part of his 'gear', if you will) to the inclusion of the tie and buttoned up shirt; He seems less gritty and more professional in LC, and also seems more reluctant, much less enthusiatic and even somewhat grumpy in LC; Ford seems like he's just playing the part by numbers
The characters of Sallah and Marcus are reduced to pure parodies of what they were in the previous films. Marcus especially. He goes from being a serious scholar (and possibly a past adventurer like Indy) to a hapless buffoon in LC. Sallah doesn't change as radically but his character is more made to look a bit less sharp, if you will, than how he was in RotLA.
I'm quite confused on the subject of LC, because on one hand I hate it and find it flawed, and on the other hand, it strikes me as an epic Don Quixote meets Indy. There is an epic, deep side to the movie to the movie despite all the humorous moments.
On that note: I am so happy KOTCS is coming out. For ten years I've waited for another Indy movie. So excited! I only wish there was an Indy movie set in the '40s. It'd be perfect; We'd see Indy in every decade of the 20th century up until the 50s, which is imo the last innocent era of American history (I consider the ''50s'' as 1947-1962) . Each movie could've had a different theme; the 30s films would have, of course, the 30s adventure series feel; a movie in the 40s could've had a 40's detective story or noir theme; a movie in the 50s would have a 50's Sci Fi movie feel. I hope they somehow make an Indy movie set in the 40s (even if it's animated).

Can't say I ever found The Last Crusade to feel "watered down" or "too PC." I've always thought it was just an enjoyable Indiana Jones movie as the previous two.

I didn't think it was watered down by any means. If anything, I felt it gave a whole new dimension to who Indiana actually is. I thought Bordy kind of became a parody considering how serious and determined he was in Raiders and here he was more of a comic relief.
But overall, it was a great, bonding father and son story that had lot of heart.
And Indy got dirtier than Mike Rowe when he was attached to the tank's gun turrent.

Haha!! Mike Rowe rocks!
As for Brody, his comicness never bothered me. He was just out of his element, much like Willie in Temple of Doom. I still think one of the funniest moments I've ever seen in a movie is when Indy is hyping Brody's skills about blending in and disappearing to Vogel, then it cuts to Brody at the train station going, "Uh, does anybody hear speak English?" The way it was executed was just great comic timing and really hilarious, because up until that point (including what we'd seen of him in Raiders), Brody had pretty much looked like a true professional.

Like some others here, I do enjoy the first two more than Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and I do think I'd have preferred Marcus to have been shown just a bit more capable, but I also think he's given short shrift - there are just enough comic moments built around him that it's easy to overlook the more serious moments, or the ones where he shows he can still keep his cool or get things done.
It's my least favorite Indy feature so far - but I still love it, and still saw it sixteen times in theaters alone (by far the most times I've seen any of them in theaters, actually, though the only reason I didn't see the first two more is lack of opportunity).

The whole Marcus thing is wrong. In the beginning he seemed like he did in ROTLA, but in action scenes he was C-3PO esque. We Marcus in any action scenes in Raiders, so who knows maybe he's always goofy un tense moments.
LC is my favorite, until May 22.... hopefully.
