In all of the movies and games Indy has a female partner, sometimes there is a male sidekick too but its always balanced with a lady. This is'nt something that bothers me infact, I think adding a female sidekick into the story makes it more intertaining, not just because their pretty but because I think that its an element of the Indy stories that is pretty much esential. The Indy movies (and games and books and ect) are supost to capture the theatrics, thrill, and romance of the time so adding a lady charactor is pretty much as important as his whip and hat, right? But do the adventures need a female presence?

I think the female sidekick is pretty much essential to Indy. It gives him someone to act butch in front of! The Willie Scott of Doom may be much maligned but where would Indy be now if it were not for her heroic bug tunnel effort? He'd be a water sprinkler. Marion is the greatest respected of the sidekicks yet she does a nice impersonation of Clouseau, spinning that mirror to Indy's chin. I think Indy sees his female accomplices as a blessing AND a curse. Even Doody had her saving graces. The book burning scene shows her true feelings toward the Nazis ( the tear of regret). It goes to show that being in the presence of Dr. Jones can bring out the best in even the vilest filth. The female characters have all made a big impression on all of these adventures and they would have not been as enjoyable without them.

Lucas always wanted to base Indy on old B-movies, and in those movies, the standard was for the male lead to have a female partner. It drives the story with romance, and can lead to some sweet situations.

In these politically correct times, it wouldn't surprise me if we were to have a metrosexual, 'bi-guy' Indy. Shia could be Indy's toyboy instead of his son. How about that? ;)

It would also explain Indy's relationship with that irritating Short Round...

Exactly.

Plus, he was also envisioned as a sort-of James Bond, and we all know how many ladies ol' Bond has had over the years. :whip:

Indy should always have a female partner. A female partner is necessary in an action movie and she usually makes things interesting as well.

Any story worth telling is either about a girl or has one in it. Facts of life. Makes everything more interesting when love (or sex) is involved.

Good stories typically have some element of sexual tension...and considering audiences prefer male/female pairings that is what Hollywood offers us.

Naw...just think of war stories, political stories, jurisprudential stories...

Most of those at the very least have a mention of a woman. With the examples you use, it's usually the wife who is waiting patiently in the background, sometimes seen, other times only referenced. There is always the topic of love or sex brought up. In fact, I can't really think of a single film that doesn't have at least that.

Not only Indy needs a woman. The adventure tone, the action and the violence, are more extreme when you put a woman in contrast. All Marion's toughness isn't enough to hide her female fragility.

Oh Hell yes you need a woman in an Adventure!!

( ......)

Can't have an Adventure without a woman. Otherwise, what would there be worth Adventuring for?

Really, all Adventure stories, since the beginning of time (or at least since the first cave-men sat around a fire and told stories), have involved MAN and WOMAN.

And don't think the cave women weren't telling their own stories as they tended the fire, skinned and tanned the hides, fashioned fish hooks from stone and bone, sewed hides into vests, prepared food, took care of the children, and otherwise did everything that needed to be done......while the men sat around the fire and told stories........ These women also told stories............eventually we called these stories ROMANCE stories.

Indiana Jones is a perfect melding of ADVENTURE with ROMANCE. And that is what makes an Indiana Jones story so appealing.

It is as old as MAN and WOMAN.

It'd be interesting to see an Indy story penned by Ralph Koenig, though...

The female roles work well in the Indy movies as they are, but I don't think that an Indy story couldn't still work well without them. So I suppose I don't think they're absolutely essential. Imagine if they opening temple crawl from Raiders had been fleshed out into its own adventure, showing us the seedier side of Indy, how he came to be associated with Sopito and those other goons, his friendship with Jacques, etc. All that could have gone into a great story that wouldn't have necessarily needed a female protagonist as Indy's foil.

Ray Winstone is playing him/her, apparently.
