I tightened the pinch then dirtied it up and while im not entirely satisfied, Im alot happier w/ the result. Not much more I can do except pop the pin off, but Im wondering for those of you here who may have done that, how do you go about it? it's not the sort of pin Im use to seeing.

The official hats that I had, both the Stetsons and the DP's, all had pins that you could slide right off, in one direction or the other-- they might have changed the design since then.

Your hat is pretty good for a TOD look; the front pinch might be a little low, but doesn't look bad as is. You can't expect too much from those hats if it's accuracy you're after, but you did a good job with it.

It seems like its just more or less wrapped around the sides of the ribbon knot, but it seems very tight and im afraid to just pull. Is that how yours was as well?

I wouldn't force it too much if you can't get much give in either direction; you might damage the ribbon. You may need to use a metal cutter of some kind if it's attached securely.

My pins are like tie clips, with one end open.

Hey deckard,
On a different thread I had posted stuff about the dorfman fedora and the pin on the newer models really seems to be kinda embedded on the hat. I've got one of the last American made dorfman's and I've gotta say, I'm also having a hell of a tough time figuring out how to take that pin off.

Falco, I love that yours came with that tight pinch, it actually looks really good. I still have not been able to find one like that, if anyone comes across an online store or even has a phone number in the U.S. for a hat shop that has one, please let me know.

And, yea I really have no idea how this pin comes off, or was attached to begin with for that matter.

you know, looking at the pin and how it's placed on the ribbon,
Im looking at it right now, an I've noticed that the pin isn't "pinned" on, it's actually placed onto the ribbon then the bow is stitched on all 4 corners.

do you know what I mean?
It's placed to stay!

the only way I see that pin coming off is if
A) you cut the ribbon behind the pin to slide it out
B) (Only if it is pinned on) Remove the stitch on one of the corners, take pin out
C) you pretend the pin doesnt exsist

So yea...None of that really sound inviting.

Do you know someone who is handy with a needle and thread? They could detach part of the ribbon for you to see if there's a way to remove the pin.

Perhaps I could take it to the cleaners, but it seems almost too much trouble, and I think as Falco mentioned, I'd still have to cut the metal. It may just be easier to take it to the nearby hat shop and have a whole new ribbon put on... I wish I could just hibernate until my AB is ready.

You could buy Todd's replacement ribbon & give it to your hat shop to put on. Good luck with the pin & I know what you mean about the AB-- I'm waiting for one, too.

I didnt know he sold only ribbons, that may actually work, I will take the hat to the hat shop tommorow to see if they can do anything.

Sorry about the pin trouble!(n)

You got a great collection, and if you don't mind me asking, where did you get all your props?

Thanks Deck,

I get most of my pieces on ebay or from other forum's members. Others I make. Check back in my collection later this week for alot more.

I can't get to the hat shop right now, Im going to go see Cloverfield with my father in a bit. Maybe afterwards, if not tommorow.

How do reshape the crown of the hat? i know how to do the brim, but I'd like to have a tight pinch for my fedora but I don't know how to go about it. Mine is like the shape of Indys KOTCS fedora, but I want it like his ROTLA one. (y)

I lightly sprayed my fedora with a water bottle then I used both palms facing inward to tighten the pinch up and then straitened and creased it with my fingers and let it dry. I repeated it twice more to get it to hold this shape. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERWET YOUR HAT. Its not a real fedora meant to take a beating, it will discolor if you overdue it. Mind your ribbon as well.

(BTW my hat is not discolored, I added some sand and baby powder to dirty it up)

Thanks Deckard! I think it looks alot better! I've said before it's not colr-acurate butit has the "Indy-shape" I'm letting it dry up high so my cat can't get it, he smells the damp wool and I think she wants it! But when it drys I'll repeat the prosec like you said then try to get pics. (y)
