The coat hanger scene in the tent is my favorite Toht scene!

Spielberg said Lacey reminded him of Peter Lorre and that's why he cast him as Toht!

If Raiders had been made in the 1930s or 40s, Peter Lorre would have been a perfect Toht. Peter Lorre is awesome!

Can't you just picture Toht on a blind date? (Creepy smile) "What shall we talk about?"

SPeaking of Peter Lorre: There was a guy named Paul Frees who was a voiceover artist for Disney among others and he did an AMAZING impression of Peter Lorre. It can be heard on the CD soundtrack to Disney's Theme Park Exclusive CD The Haunted Mansion Original Attraction Soundtrack. (Not the movie soundtrack)

I think it's "Oh, most certainly!"

In Doom I thought Indy said: "Are you trying to develop a sense of humor of my own death?" lol.

The most embarrassing misunderstanding of a character's line for me was when I watched Tim Burton's Batman.

Batman punches the Joker.
Batman: "I'm going to kill you."
The Joker: "You IDIOT! You made me! Remember? You dropped me into that vat of chemicals! That wasn't easy to get over, and don't think I didn't try!".

I used to think he said "You idiot! You made me remember!", as in Batman's punch made him remember him dropping him into the vat of chemicals!

LOL! Nothing like a punch to the head to jog one's memory! :D

It is remarkable what a memorable villain Toht is, given the limited screen time that he has. My favorite scene of his has to be his entrance into Belloq's tent. The apprehension on Belloq and Marion's faces as Toht begins to assemble his coat hanger, followed by their relief when they realize that it isn't some kind of torture device, is priceless.

Back in the '30s, when someone came across someone they didn't know, instead of asking their name, they called them "Mac".

I had a doctor's appointment a week ago, but I was in-between doctors, so I'd never met this guy. He walks in, and lo and behold, he looked exactly like Toht! If he so much as said, "Fraulein" or ,"Now...what shall we talk about?" I would've laughed in his face. :D

Anyone seen Funny Farm, starring Chevy Chase?
In one scene, a moving van driver is looking for a town and asks a random old man on the front porch where it is. The smilies indicate their expressions:

Driver: "Hey, Mac. Do you know where Redbud is."
Old Man: " How'd yegh know my name is Mac?"
Driver: "...I just guessed." :o
Old Man: "Then yegh cane jest guess yer way to Redbud then!"

Probably not funny written out, but hilarious on screen.

Back in the '30s, when someone came across someone they didn't know, instead of asking their name, they called them "Mac".Which most likely originated from an abundance of Scottish immigrants/descendants in N.America
making it common assumption that someone's name would be MacDonald, MacGregor, MacNabb,
McGee, McMullen, etc.

For another, memorable, Ronald Lacey performance, check out "Zulu Dawn".
It was made just a few years before "Raiders" and he plays the part of the
campaign's war correspondent, William Norris. (In the film, Norris-Nogg).
In '84 he played a hot-dog vendor in "Making The Grade". Really weird to
see Toht selling steamies on the street!

Plus, if you have the DVDs and you can't hear the dialogue, put the subtitles on!:whip:

Yeah that's a great movie, speaking of Chevy Chase, I think the Toys Mcoy Indy figure looks more like him then Ford. And I didn't know Lacy palyed in LC as another charactor. I need to take a pic of my little cousins with my "Toht hat" on, I have black fedora and when he puts it on that what gave me the insiration for "The adventures of young Arnold Toht" Since my cousin is like 9, I can have another one of my cosuins ask for like a bag of candy or something like that or a toy, and then have my cousin playing Toht come it and be like "...... The same thing your friend wantd" yeah ideas ideas.

Toht was an incredibly awesome villain. Thanks to those who reminded me of Peter Lorre. I always liked that guy but never knew his name. I'd seen him in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea since I was a kid and more recently in Casablanca. Such a great actor. As was Ronald Lacey. It's such a shame he isn't around anymore. We've lost too many actors from the Indy movies.

It is Toht, for all intents and purposes. I've read on IMDB they just didn't have Ronald Lacey on hand to film the scene so they used Muren, but I think it's supposed to be Toht because who else would it be?

Besides, all we see of him is his hat and eyes and glasses over the top of the magazine. It's clear that they disguised who it was and only showed the hat and glasses so the audience would make the connection when Toht comes into the bar later.

He's seen very briefly and a quick glance will make almost anyone assume it's Toht, so therefore, I still think it's at least meant to be him in terms of the story. Think of it as Muren doubling for the unavailable Lacey.

Why Lacey wasn't available, hasn't been said.

I don't think so. Check the picture. It's a tan jacket, not the black Toht always wears. If they'd meant it to be him, Muren would have been all in black.

It could have just been another Gestapo dude.
Although, as Attila said, the colors of his clothes are different. All of the gestapo agents in Indy have worn black, but perhaps this guy was an exception.
Or, perhaps, he was trying to blend in. Those black suits aren't very inconspicuous.
I think that Toht is pronounced "Toat". On the behind the scenes segments, i'm pretty sure it's always pronounced "Toat."
Herr Gruber just pronounces it funny because he's a Brit. Just kidding, Hans.
