Do you think Raiders would have been such a great movie if it was made today? I don't think so, it came at a time when the world only started to see "blockbusters". Between Jaws, Star Wars there were not a lot of movies like that out,and an old school adventure was never made since I would say the 50's possible the 60's. If made today, it would be good but it would be stuff with CGI and special effects, it would probably go to DVD fast.:)

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

If you take the plot of Raiders and hand it over to a "lesser" filmaker I think you are right---it would risk being a tepid straight to video thing. However, if Spielberg was just making Raiders now---it would have the same impact. He is arguably the greatest film maker ever, and people would flock to see it.

Remember, without Raiders---you wouldn't have had films like Tomb Raider, The Mummy, Romancing the Stone, etc. Raiders changed action adventure movies forever...look at Bond movies before and after Raiders for evidence of this....

Actually, I believe the script for Romancing the Stone had been floating around Hollywood since the late-70s. But the success of Raiders probably helped it finally get made. I've just always been annoyed when people say it was one of the first Indiana Jones rip-offs, because it technically wasn't. :)

Possibly not.

Raiders was successful because it was made for the moviegoers of 1981.

Moviegoer's today are quite different.

You are very correct about Steven, all films he did and will do are great, no question, I just think Hollywood of today would over do it and the story and characters would suffer. Lesser directors would make it more then it has to be. It would be strange and almost unbearable to watch

It's weird to consider how Raiders - and in totality, Indiana Jones - would be valued today if Tom Selleck had stayed in the lead role.

Ugh. If it were made today, they would probably get Michael Bay to direct it.

At least it would look nice, though.

Could be worse. Uwe Boll or McG anyone?

Lesser diectors do not have heart, directors like Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton idolized and respected the films and the great directors before them and that's why Raiders is what it is today because it was a throwback to the past with modern touches. If put in the hand of a lesser director it would be mediocre at best and catering more so to the younger audiences as directors think they are doing it for. Lesser directors do not pay attention to the great masters of the yesteryear they do their own thing and it becomes crap!:dead:

Really? Wow, I never would have known that. Hmm... it makes me wonder if Steven or George ever looked at that script pre-Indy.

Or Tony Scott. Raiders - the flashy pop video.

Well, I wouldn't mind the Tony Scott who directed TOP GUN, but certainly not the Tony Scott who directed DOMINO.

Yeah, it was written in the late-70s by a waitress who was a struggling screenwriter. Unfortunately, it was the only one she ever wrote, as she was killed in a car crash just after the film's release. It was one of those scripts that virtually every studio in town had passed on.

And I've never read this before, but according to IMDb (I know, I know) she had just finished a draft of a sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark when she died. Interesting.

I thought the somewhat recent film called The Rundown had a lot of familiar elements without going overboard on CGI. Some of the cinematgraphy was also pretty reminiscint and it did rather well.

For me it boils down to this:

A Raiders of the Lost Ark not made by Spielberg or Lucas, whether released in 1981 or now, would be a lesser version of what it turned out to be. Again, I think it is more about who is making it, than when it was made.
