Hey
I know it was 8 years between Raiders (1981) and LC (1989), but Ford really aged a lot in the space of those 8 years. Even between ToD and LC, he looks a lot older than he did in ToD and that was only 5 years later. As far as Indy goes, they should've set LC later than 1938 because it looks like way more than just 2 years have passed. What did Marion do to Indy in that missing year ;) ? lol

They couldn't have set Last Crusade any later than 1938 without having to deal with World War II.

I agree that he looked like he had aged the full 8 years.
That said, as Skipper said, they couldn't have set it any later and have had the same story.

They will no doubt bring this up in Crystal Skull.

I don't know why Harrison didn't just put in some hair color. He really doesn't look that much older except for the gray hair.

There was an article somewhere in which Spielberg apparently asked Ford to dye his hair and Harrison declined.
The first images I saw of the grey look were the shots of he and LaBeouf filming the bike chase. It was a strange shock to see - but now I'm quite used to it.

I think he had a little hair dye in Last Crusade. I'm suspicious, to say the least.

I know Harrison is not ashamed to admit he's aged, but for the consistency of the other films it would have looked better if he had dyed it. It's just for the film anyway and lots of actors color their hair, especially the older ones.

Its possible that the character could still not have gone grey by the age of
58.
That said, I think they were right to have Harrison Ford keep his grey hair for the film. It feels right, I think. The character has aged twenty years and has gone grey, but he's every bit as tough and perseverant as he always was, except he might have to breathe harder at the end, as Spielberg said. Also, visually speaking, the grey hair looks good, and also identifies him as an older Indiana Jones.

George Clooney dies his hair for some of his films and we all know he's gray. He's also about 10 years younger than Ford.

I can't think of any men that age, who aren't grey to a degree.

Rather 20 years..

Yep, you've a point there. Just look at the motocycle scene /it was shot later/. You can easily notice a notable patch o grey hair on the back of his head. But I agree, he looks much older in LC... He should've slimed a little...

True.
In any case, I can't really explain why I hate the idea of dyeing his hair. I just think it would look and feel unnatural. The character has aged 20 years and is 58, and if Harrison Ford has gray hair, then he should have grey hair. Being honest to the audience and to your star reaps more rewards, I think.
In any case, visually speaking his grey hair looks fine. All of the sequels have played on the iconic costume in Raiders, and this time the new "thing" is his grey hair. Notice the costume itself hasn't changed, no ties or ripped sleeves with missing jackets etc.
The 1950s setting as opposed to 1930s setting will look different visually anyway, so they might as well have his hair being different to keep with that.
As an additional point, it gives the character a grizzled, tough appearance anyway. Looks like he's been through alot and means business, like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven.

Me too, but go ahead. I really hope that the reunion scene between her and Indy is done beautifully in Crystal Skull...

Agreed. Indy doesn't strike me as someone who is at all vain about his appearance. Plus for me this movie is as much about seeing an older and grayer Harrison Ford prove all the naysayers wrong as it is about seeing an older and grayer Indy prove that.
It gives the movie some extra subtext and another reason to root for the hero.
