During the dinner scene in ToD, we see alot of questionable cuisine like snakes and beetles and such, I find it interesting that Indy wasn't in the least bit phased by the food unlike Willie and Shorty.
I understand Indy is a brave guy and all, but would he really be willing to eat stuff like chilled monkey brains? We see him chewing while talking to the officials and he seemed to be enjoying it.

You haven't had chilled monkey brains? It goes great with some root beer! Don't knock it till you've tried it :).

Well if we go by Young Indy, he was introduced to tripe (pig intestine?) at the ripe old age of 8. He didn't look thrilled then.

I used to eat beef tripe all the time as a kid.My Grandfather would cook it ALL THE TIME! Needless to say,I DO NOT miss eating that stuff.

Indy is a well-travelled man, so I'm assuming that he's eaten stuff like this before. Well, maybe not snake surprise, but you get the idea. :D

But from your point of view, if you went somewhere with something 'odd', you would probably react better than say someone like me, who hasn't eaten anything exotic. Except for ostrich. Ostrich is good.
When I moved to Minnesota, I found out that a lot of people of Norwegian descent eat lutefisk every Christmas/New Year's. They don't seem to *like* it, but they eat it.

Yeah, I always thought it was funny how Indy never seems to pay any attention to the food (until the monkey brains are served), but I always just assumed he was used to be served odd dishes. But it's always funny that he appears to never eat any of it because he's talking the whole time with Chattar Lal. As for what he does appear to be eating, I thought it was maybe a piece of bread roll or something.

It looks like Indy, Lal, and Capt. Blumbard are eating something completely different. On Indy's plate it looks like Lima beans?

I don't think he saw the snakes at all. He probably would have ended up jumping into Willie's arms for salvation.

Yeah, Indiana pretty much doesn't pay any attention to what's being served, although Captain Blumburtt seems a bit unnerved when some of the eels begin slithering over towards him, but he recovers admirably.
And anyway, as has been said, Indy has been all across the world so he's probably eaten some pretty weird stuff in his time. Snakes stuffed with live eels, beetles, eyeball soup and chilled monkey brains wouldn't be that unusual.
Of course, this is going by the movie. In the script, I think he comments on how odd the menu seems.

I bet this is also Andrew Zimmern's favorite scene from any movie.

I have to agree with what other people have said and that Indy and the Captain are being served something different. While giving stuff like monkey brains and eye-ball soup to Short Round and Willie would end up scaring them, they knew it wouldn't intimidate somebody like Indy, who has probably been to India before, and knows that isn't the the type of thing they usually have to eat, so if they had tried on him, he'd definitely know there was something sinister going on. Or I might just be talking nonsense!

Yeah, I think it's one of his favorite recipes, but he doesn't get to have it very often. You see, monkeys' brains, while popular in Cantonese cuisine, are not commonly found in Washington D.C.

I think he was just being nice and civil.
Like back in the village when he tells Willie "this is more than these people eat in a month." Different circumstances, same concept.
He is reverent of other cultures.

This might be a shocker but I LOVE tripe! Monkey brains, though, are a different story.;)

Always bugged me this scene....pun intended.
This secne is ridiculous bordering on offensive, but that issue aside Indy would be respectful and apreciatvive of foreign hospitality.
I don't know why he doesn't run out screaming at snake surprise though.
A bad scene IMO.
