View Full Version : A question for most of you Indy fans

I have a question for all of you "new" Indy fans. By "new," I really mean two things. First, "new" meaning you didn't wait years to see any of the sequels. I've been an Indy fan for the past 17 years now, but that's a lot shorter time than a lot of you out there (cut me some slack, I'm just turning 21!).
Anywho, you probably saw all three within a relatively short amount of time. In doing so, were you disappointed in ToD or LC at all? There's such hate for both from many people, and many people that don't hate it still feel let down. I can understand that. I feel I'd be the same way had I been born a decade earlier. But I saw all three back to back and loved them all. Were you the same way?
And for all you really new fans who have just watched the films in order to prepare for KotCS and happened to love them all like me, what are your thoughts on KotCS? Just as good? Not as good? Horrid? I ask because while working today, half of the 1st grade boys in the classroom I aide for were talking to me about it and they said it was the best. I'm curious is it because they're so young and buy into all the action/CGI stuff or is it because they saw all 4 within a short time and didn't have to wait 19 years for this to come.

Seriously? No one?
Maybe it was too lengthy of a post. I have a tendency of being wordy....

Nah, I think the rest of us are just too old for your question. :)

I'm not a 'new' fan timewise, but I saw all 3 of the movies in a short amount of time after I got into the series.
Temple of Doom was hard for me to watch. But I grew up in a pretty conservative religious home and I wasn't allowed to watch a lot of movies or tv shows. The violence and the voodoo were a hard for me. I just watched it again recently and enjoyed it immensely, now that I 'get' Indy a little more.
Oh and I also watched the Last Crusade first...lol.

ToD-->Raiders-->LC is the order I saw them. But then I bought the trilogy. By that time I'd only seen ToD more then once. That was soon remedied.

I rented the original trilogy in '07 when the new movie was announced, and I honestly enjoyed TOD more than Raiders. LC was a bit of a miss -- I liked most of it, except for the ending which felt really sudden and rushed. I dunno... TOD is very different from Raiders, so I guess I can understand why some people were so disappointed with it. You wait three years for a sequel, and it's not what you'd expected it to be. (i.e. a clone of Raiders)
As of right now, my ranking for the films is:
1. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
2. Temple of Doom
3. Last Crusade
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Numbers one and two are liable to change, but Raiders will always be a solid 4th for me. :p

I'm in the same boat. I've been a fan since I was about four when I saw ToD (What were my parents thinking!?). I'm 22, by the way.

I saw them all a couple of years apart. ToD at 4, Raiders at 6, LC at 7. Raiders was disappointing after seeing ToD (Huge shift in tone, and more exposition than ToD had). LC I loved for the humor. Eventually, my mindset shifted. Raiders is probably my favorite, followed very closely by LC, followed by ToD.
And for all you really new fans who have just watched the films in order to prepare for KotCS and happened to love them all like me, what are your thoughts on KotCS? Just as good? Not as good? I've seen this before. With Star Wars. There are a lot of young kids and even early teens that like the prequels more than the original (Hell, my ex, who's 25, liked the prequels more than the originals). I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a new generation of Indy fans that have KotCS at the of top their lists.
What we grow up with is what we usually wind up being more fond of. Rose-tinted glasses and all that. KotCS reaction is very mixed with older fans, from loving it, to being "meh" about it, to outright despising it. Those mindsets usually boil down to "It's Indy, that all that matters", to "What the hell did I just watch? Harrison was up there as Indy, but. . .what?" to "That was nothing like the original trilogy. That was an abomination and not Indy". Younger fans, though, you'll probably have reactions that weigh in much more heavily on the positive side. It's got Indy, Mutt, cheezy villains, ridiculous amounts of actions and aliens, which would be awe-inspiring to fans that don't think about the pulpy, religious overtones of the first three. Either way, those reactions are awfully surprising to see for a 65-year old action hero.

I watched the trilogy in a span of maybe 3 to 4 days. There's this place where you pay to watch a movie on a comfortable chair and they have hundreds of DVDs. Well, I had always known of Indiana Jones and the iconic boulder scene but I had never watched any of the movies. So I watched Raiders, loved it, and returned the next few days to watch Temple and Crusade. I was never disappointed by Temple but Crusade was never my favorite but that doesn't mean I didn't like it. It's almost as great as Temple.
This was in 2006 btw.

I got into Indy less than three months ago, and after seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom was pretty disappointing. However, I enjoyed Last Crusade. I still haven't seen Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (I know... shocking), so I can't tell you how I felt about it yet.

Your current offline status better mean you're at the theater.

I think I saw Last Crusade at the cinema. I'm really not sure, I would've still been very young. Nevertheless, I think it's the first one I saw and is the most enjoyable and generally fun one of the series - even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has a few serious moments and a couple of swear words (not that it bothers me in the least, certainly less than decapitations, but still...).
Raiders though is unequivocably the best. It's more gritty and realistic, humorous and every moment of it you will remember for the rest of your life.
I think I prefer KOTCS to Temple of Doom. TOD has loads of classic moments but two really annoying sidekicks. I quite like Mutt, Mac and Marion (or The Three M's). And the Crystal Skull really works for me and is suitably epic. It's different, but not unrecognisable as Indy.

Over the past few years, my dad and I have started reading and discussing a lot of the Mayan 2012 theories and things of that nature. So this fit in *perfectly* with my recent interests.

I've grown up with Indy and Star Wars, and about last year started re-watching Indy.
Really it was more "Re-discovering Temple of Doom". I always grew up with the "that's the bad one" mindset, and after giving it another chance I now love that one.
And KOTCS, I just plain love right from the getgo! I'm a big fan of 50's Sci-Fi movies, and Indy in the 50's is just awesome for me. KOTCS has so many loving tributes to 50's movies I love too. (Earth VS. the Flying Saucers, THEM, Forbidden Planet.)
So really I always loved Indy, and all this new stuff have re-sparked my interest again.

Four years ago I got Raiders and Crusade at the library and that night I watched Crusade and then Raiders. At the time Crusade was my favorite. I then got the box set a year ago and watched all three and now my favorite is Raiders,Crusade, then Doom. I love all three though.:D

I watched all of the movies at a theater, back in the day.
Raiders I saw a few years after it's first run, in a double feature at a downtown cinema, back in the 80's. I was heavily into Star Wars then, and had little to no interest in any other movie genre. I remember that day my mom and I took my sister to the zoo, and on our way back, I asked mom if we could instead go to what was on at a nearby theater, and it was Raiders and some other flick I didn't really want to see again (one in the Planet of the Apes series, I think).
So we went in and I got completely hooked by the time Indy escaped the Chachapoyan Temple.
By the time Temple of Doom was premiered, I took my little sister to watch it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. My sister got really scared by the sacrificial scene (she wanted to go home at that point. We didn't:sick: ), but once that part was over, she was also hooked on the franchise.
By the time Last Crusade came out, my family and I were pretty much convinced it would become a James Bond sort of franchise, with a new Indiana Jones movie coming out every couple years, but it didn't quite turn out that way.
I liked Crusade, but I felt it a little bit flatter than the previous two, mostly because the action took us to less exotic locales, and Indy was fighting nazis, yet again.
All in all, I consider all Indy movies to be quite good.
