I can't stand when my girlfriend says this cause i never know what the hell she's talking about when she says? Like I'll be sitting at home and watching tv and then suddenly get a text from her saying "OMG, I'm so upset I'm having a nervous breakdown and I'm like about to cry." What the hell is a nervous breakdown, does it mean like she's in trouble and she's panicking or something else? Guys, have your girls ever said they had one of these before and did they explain it to you?

I always took it to mean she's being overly dramatic. Girls (and some guys  ) get like that sometimes.

And how many girls do you think actually know the definition of a nervous breakdown?

And how many girls do you think actually know the definition of a nervous breakdown?

Oddly enough, I've heard the expression used equally by and for both men and women. Old people will always talk about having a nervous breakdown from divorce, job stress, death to spouse, etc etc..

I never heard about it being so gender-specific until I came across this thread....

At any rate, like the definition states, it's a layman's expression for "losing it"...your application on the severity of said loss may vary by mileage and/or age.

I always understood it to mean a complete emotional collapse, usually brought on by severe job stress, divorce, etc (as Agent Z said above). At my school one of the teachers had a nervous breakdown and he was off work for a year and half, and I've seen people quit careers - not jobs, their careers - after suffering breakdowns.

I think your girlfriend is using the term more loosely to describe, perhaps, a panic attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_attack), or maybe it's simply how she describes being upset or emotional. Whatever she's going through when she says it though, you should be there for her and calm her down - she's your girlfriend!

Depends on what caused it I imagined. My ex had one when one of her relatives ended up going to prison...all I could do was let her come over, we sat on the floor of my room and I just let her cry, and I put my arms around her...crying isn't the only result, depending on how serious it is..for some theres a shortness of breath and other not so fun things...But I guess it just depends on the girl....some may have a panic attack if they go to homecoming and see someone wearing the same dress or same shoes as them...
to each their own
