I was reading an article I found and I found it very interesting, here's a snippit (well perhaps a bit more than a snippit, all the best snippable parts)... just thought I'd share.

Sleeping too much, just like sleeping too little, could be linked to a person's risk of an early death, a new British study indicates.

Researchers at the University of Warwick's Warwick Medical School studied 10,308 British civil servants in two different time periods: between 1985 and 1988, and between 1992 and 1993.

Study participants who upped their nightly sleep to eight hours or more were more than twice as likely to die within the ensuing 11-17 years as those who kept sleeping for seven. Researchers believe depression, low socioeconomic status and cancer-related fatigue could play a part.Study participants who upped their nightly sleep to eight hours or more were more than twice as likely to die within the ensuing 11-17 years as those who kept sleeping for seven. With seven hours seen as the optimal amount of sleep for the average adult, the study subjects who cut the duration of their sleep from seven hours to five hours a night had a 1.7-fold increased risk of death from all causes within the ensuing 11-17 years, according to the research, presented Monday to the British Sleep Society.

They also had twice the increased risk of death from a cardiovascular problem.

More surprisingly, scientists found those individuals who increased the number of hours they slept per night from seven to eight hours or more were more than twice as likely to die within 11-17 years as those who kept sleeping for seven. They were more likely to die from non-cardiovascular diseases.

I read somewhere, in another article similar to this one, that the whole "you need to get 8 hours of sleep" thing was just a myth and one of the researchers was trying to debunk it. He said he had been in the business for 22 years and he still had no idea where it came from.

So how much sleep do you get? I honestly get about 7-8 hours these days which is good I guess. But I've had times where 5-6 was the norm for probably a few months at a time.

Original article here (http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2007/09/24/sleep-study.html). I searched to see if this has been posted sooo yeah.

Depends...

During school... only a few hours a night. From an hour to 4 hours, typically.

During the summer... I sleep the day away. Sometimes 10-12.

Anybody ever suffer insomnia? I still have to pop Temazepam at bedtime to ensure a fair stretch of sleep. My mind hits hyperdrive at night...

Wow, that's interesting. Last night I was up until 5 in the morning talking to my best friend. If she keeps this up at college, then I'm in big trouble.

Coincidentally, I had a rough morning as I only got 5 hours of sleep. I eventually got 2 extra hours, but I'm still a tad tired.

My Mom always tries to push me to sleep more because it "unhealthy" not doing so, based on the article, looks like she's been proved wrong again. ;)

Yeah... growing up and still now, even. But once I do get out, I'm out... for awhile.

I try to read every night. I open my book...read maybe a page or two...and before I know it I'm out.

Then I wake up about two hours later to my wife smacking me and telling me to turn the light out...which is just about when I realize the book I was reading is on the floor and I'm holding the bookmark.

I sleep from about 10:30PM to 6AM...so about 7.5 hrs each night...

Sounds like I need to stay awake...a little...mo...r...e...

Yeah, I had a terrible spell of it in '97-'98. Not so bad now, but I've just grown accustomed to taking the one pill at night. They say the medication loses its power after a time, so who knows..?

With the reviews it's been getting around here, you wouldn't want to sleep because you'll have nightmares.

Anyway, I'm sure somewhere there's a study that says the opposite of this. I think the "right" amount of sleep varies per person, though the average is about 7-8 hours a night. So long as a person has a consistent sleep schedule, I think however long they sleep naturally is about right for that person, so long as they don't have some sort of sleeping disorder.

Lately I haven't been getting much sleep. My gf loves to talk on the phone, and Sunday night we were talking from 9 PM to 5 AM. Only slept 5 hours. Last night I only slept 6. Man, I better get some sleep before I go to college in 17 days. :p
