Ok, the other day I asked a friend if they thought there was a difference between my obsession with Indiana Jones movies and the people that get excessively preoccupied with the whole Star Wars thing. This person (a non-fanboy of either) said "Nah, it's about the same. You're all dorks!" I don't think that's true, but if so, I guess I could live with it. I believe that I have a fair idea of how non fans view the hardcore Star Wars crowd, but let's honestly ask ourselves if Indy fandom is really that different. Costuming, action figures, fan films, etc., the evidence does stack up. I can only speak for myself when I say that I am not in denial of my geekery, in fact I revel in it! But are all nerds created equally? I put it to you, Raveners, to decide. Just how much of a kinship we share with with Lucas' other major fanbase.

I tend to think the Star Wars fans are nerdier. When we mention we like Indiana Jones, people might say things like "Oh, that part in Raiders was cool when the guy's face melted off" and they will have fond memories of it.

When you say you like Star Wars, the first thing people say are "That prequel series was bad."

People remember the original Indiana Jones trilogy before they remember whether or not they liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The same can't be said about the prequel.

So I guess the point I'm trying to make is that Indiana Jones gets a better reputation outside of the main fan basis because people have better memories of it. That and Indiana Jones doesn't take place in space. People typically associate space with nerds.

Indy's all about ancient relics, perilous adventure, beautiful women, and fighting the bad guys. Its fights are gritty and dirty and Indy himself is a big manly hero. The Indy films are total guy movies. Every guy wants to be Indiana Jones. Hell, every guy wants to be Harrison Ford. Don't get me wrong, the women love them too obviously, this board is an example of that.

Star Wars, though I love it, is a big science fiction soap opera in space. It made the mainstream aware of "Fanboys" and their habits :p The only manly man in the Star Wars movies are Han.And that's 'cause The Ford played him.

The step from mainstream culture to Indyfan isn't as great as from mainstream to Star Wars Fan. Of course I am talking about the extreme fans, in this case.
Indy has real world connections; archaeology, religion, history, as well as historical fgures. My professor of archaeology demonstrated it best when he asked the class on the first day, "What do you think of when you think of archaeology?" Someone beat me to the punch and said, Indiana Jones. Indy is known as an archaeologist, a respected career path and therefore doesn't carry the same stigma in people's minds as Star Wars fans. Dressing up in Indy gear is also rather practical. There are many examples of fans wearing their gear to exotic locales, such as Petra, Valley of the Kings, and even a few fans have put them to work on actual archaeological digs.

Star Wars fandom is a bigger step in people's minds. Mainstream society has a harder time understanding why anyone would want to dress up as an Imperial Stormtrooper, or Bobba Fett(as cool as that would be). The Star Wars Universe is a fantasy universe(No matter how many comparisons can be drawn from the real world), so there is a little disconnection that is associated with the fandom. It's harder to justify in people's minds. I could be wrong though Star Wars has staying power. 1977-

Self-effacing Indyfans, confess!

Or stand proud and "Force" Star Wars fans to take the crown of Nerd-dom!

Or be at one with the universe and let us know that you think we are all equally pathetic in our unhealthy fixations!

Both are nerdy, but I think Star Wars is nerdier than Indiana Jones. Both are amazing though!

I like Star Wars as well but not nearly as much as Indy. I tend to think of Star Wars as being more geeky, mostly because of the technical and sci-fi elements.

Indy gear and relics are more practical and realistic, at least in my opinion. I've known quite a few die-hard SW fans and they're cool too. I just like Indy better.;)

Dress as Luke Skylwalker or Han Solo or somebody and you'd be considered a geek.

Dress as Indy and you'd still be considered a geek, but less so.

*NB Suggestion: don't dress as a Nazi.

I always like to compare the two by the estimate of who's bound to get more lucky in this life.

Indiana Jones: A bit on the wild side, as displayed by that excessive fetish towards whips and raw leather. Interesting subcategory are those who think older is better and claim them as "my priceless relics".

Star Wars: It has been shown that the only way for these guys to get some is to chain up the object of your desires and attach them to yourself (I'm pretty sure there are laws prohibiting this in the more civilized countries). Or alternatively, you need to appear in public with guys who are even more hideous-looking than you are, optly demonstrated by this fellow who hanged around with this big and hairy buddy of his. Though some people claim he got only his first kiss because he had the fastest ride in the neighborhood. Go figure.

So yeah, we might be a bit more into that kinky s**t, but at least we aren't completely hopeless.

Well, I know of a man who beats 'em both...

WORLD of WARCRAFT: An old friend of ours had a brother in law. His brother in law weighed approximately 640 pounds. His brother in law started his day, every day, around 10 in the morning. He would then proceed into the living room where he sat for about the following 12 hours-getting up only to use the pot and grab snacks (unless he could demand someone else to feed him). This man never went out doors--ever. He just sat day through playing World of Warcraft until he flopped back into bed only to begin his routine the next day.

If there are greater displays of patheticness from either of the above genres please inform me, but no pictures thanks.

Does said friend's brother-in-law feel that the world is hopeless aside from a server malfunction in Northrend?

star wars nerds. i like star wars dont get me wrong, i dig the originals, dig the prequels, dig clone wars movie and toons... but im no hardcore fan and cant spout off about all sorts of trivia.

i cant do that w/indy either, though i like indy much much more than star wars just out of childhood sentimentality factor, but also indy just plain rocks :) ;)

i used to think i was a star wars nerd, then my buddy tyler invited me to go to a comic con 2 years ago... went and saw a table of star wars memrobilia, went by and all the arguments and trivia contests they were doing kinda shocked me and made me realize i was less of a nerd than i previously thought lolz

OK, I have to throw in my 2 cents. This is an awesome topic BTW.

Outside the "fan" world, i.e. people that don't care, I would have to say look on the Star Wars crowd as the bigger geeks, simply because a LOT of them, don't know the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek, now the Trekkies have gotten a raft of crap over the years about being geeks and I think the public in general lumps all the star wars geeks in with them.

Now, I LOVE Star Wars, second only to Indy, and I have on occasion put on a Jedi Robe and gone out. On Halloween. A jedi robe isn't something you can just wear around. Although, with The Snuggie becoming as popular as it has, who knows, that may change...sorry, train of thought derailed. If you run around in a Jedi Robe, people will cry "NERD", but I can go out dressed in full Indy Gear, and no one looks at me at all. I had my jacket and fedora on today and the girl at Taco Bell said "What up, Indiana Jones", and I was proud. I would be more than a little embarrassed to be called "Obi-Wan" or whatever. You almost...FEEL like a dork when you associate with SW. Not true with Indy. What is the point of this...I forgot. SW fans are the bigger nerds though. Even though I am one. :hat:

Oh, and the story about the warcraft guy is just sad...seriously.

On a personal note, I agree with all the posts so far, and the poll results. Of course, most people here would. Yet, a few have voted otherwise. We have yet to hear from the "dark side" in this discussion. Speak out, naysayers! I know you are out there! Of the 258 views this has gotten, only 27 votes have been cast. The court of public opinion could be easily swayed into the other direction, should a certain nerdy faction rise up and resist our empirialistic reign.

They say a fox can't smell his own hole...could it be that Indyfans are blind to their own social marginalization? Until a chosen one rises up to offer a new hope, we may never know.

Trekkies and Star Wars nerds are only made the butt of many a cruel high school joke (no, that's not said from experience) because Indiana Jones is much more masculine. I mean, that's no spit on SW or Trek but, well...

On one hand you've got a man in a leather jacket stitching guys up with led and beating them bloody with his bare hands...

and on the other you've got men whooshing their hands at you and swating you with light sabers.

Star Wars.

I think the problem is that its more common to be a Star Wars fan. Mostly because there's a lot more to promote just based on its concept(and because lets face it, Star Wars was more popular than Raiders was), so therefore, there's a lot more movies, shows, games, books, toys etc. for fans to nerd out on.

There just doesn't seem to be quite enough Indiana Jones stuff to nerd out on, so the die-hard fans don't appear to be as common. There's lots of potential, but I guess Lucasfilm just assumes its not as big a market and just focus more on Star Wars.

Star Wars. They take nerdiness to the extreme. In a bad way. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite the SW nerd myself, but after seeing Triumph the Insult Comic Dog at the premier of Phantom Menace, interviewing the people in line....man.

True that. I have to say, though, those guys really took it well. I got a lot of mileage out of the Triumph dvd. GREAT stuff.

This is one of the things I love about being an Indy fan: the gear is actually USABLE in many situations. Wearing a Jedi robe and lightsaber out in public will get you plenty of laughs and stares, yet a leather jacket and fedora looks cool and pretty stylish.

One guy taking on Nazis and Communists is a hell of a lot cooler than an order of guys with magical powers being wiped out and by some other guys with chicken walkers. I think it says something that Han Solo is the coolest character.
