Sure Indy has lots of original videogames, but why not base them on the films?
You could have one for each film :)
I'm rather surprised that 'Lucas Arts' hasn't already cashed in on this. Sure they did in the 80s and early-90s but we need one for the 21st century! (and that doesn't count the Nazi-free 'Lego Indiana Jones' )

Yeah, but what's the gameplay like? At this point in time, gamers rightfully expect a fair degree of realism, and hence, potential faithfulness to the films. How much do you expand on that to make the gameplay something worthwhile and still be faithful?

It's a neat idea but at the same time I like the fact of seeing Indy go on completely new adventures. It makes the game much more unpredictable and gives us further insight into Indy's many adventures. I liked LEGO Indiana Jones and I think it did a great job translating the films into a fun and playable game.
SoK will have playable levels from the films (I think it's only on the PSP version but someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that) so at least that'll be something.

Indiana Jones's Greatest Adventures (SNES)
Best Indy game of all time I think.

Yeah, it's a pretty good time. There's some things you'll be disappointed are missing (anything prior to the catacombs in LC, the Raiders truck chase), but it's pretty solid. There's few things quite so elegant (I'm sure it was intended to be cheap, but I love it) as how the first level (the Temple of the Chacopoyan Warriors) and the second-last level (The Grail Temple) are basically the same thing, layout and all, but with the second one being harder. If you think about it, that's true of the film too, and it makes a lovely parallel.

I'd rather have new Indy adventures than a rehash of the 4 films.
But I guess it might be cool. You never know!

I was watching Temple of Doom a few nights back and that would make an amazing video game.

Well look at the Godfather game It was based off the film but it expanded alot and there is another one coming out to.
If they made Indy like a sandbox style game where you could explore and find the Idol temple yourself and navigate through it that would be a great game.

Yeah, I was thinking about The Godfather game as I posted, actually. A couple of key differences there:
1) The events of The Godfather play out over a longer, more open period of time and space.
2) You aren't playing as any of the main characters.
So you could put in a bunch of space between the scenes in the films; that's perfectly reasonable and necessary. Give us more of the Tanis digs, of Nepal, of Peru; of the trek to Pankot, of what comes before Club Obi-Wan, of the temple of doom itself; of how he got to the Portuguese coast, of Venice, of Iskendrun and the European countryside; of what comes before the warehouse sequence in Mexico, of the uncovered period of time surrounding the cemetery, of Akator itself. Then that can begin to make some sense.

Yeah and you can do side missions at the college and for private collectors. So each minor relic you find is a seperate adventure instead of just finding random artifacts in places like in ET.
