View Full Version : Did Indiana Jones actually meet Adolf Hitler in Last Crusade?

In "Last Crusade", Indiana attends a Nazi book-burning rally, and gets
Adolf Hitler's signature in the diary.

People have claimed that this was a film error or goof because
supposedly "Hitler" signed with the wrong hand and the signature didn't look
like the real Hitler's signature.

But did Indiana actually meet Adolf Hitler and get his signature?

Adolf Hitler was known to hire "doubles" to impersonate him at rallies and
other events, could Indiana have meet one of these men?

Perhaps that is why the diary didn't go up in smoke.

Good question.
But, we are lead to believe that Indiana Jones did indeed met the real Adolf Hitler.

There's footage of Spielberg on set, joking to the actor, "I feel like strangling you with my bare hands!" I believe it's included in the 2003 documentary.

So yes, the actor was supposed to be portraying the real Hitler.

I can't remember correctly, but wasn't he supposed to have had a role in Raiders and he couldn't do it?

I may be wrong, but was he going to play Toht but lost the part to Lacey. He also played the U-boat captain in Raiders.

Does anybody know if I'm right?

Thanks!:p

Actor Michael Sheard who played the uncredited role as the U-boat Captain first auditioned for the role of Gestapo agent Toht, but his friend Ronald Lacey got the part. Michael Sheard returned for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in which he played Adolf Hitler

I wasn't sure. I'm kinda out of it with my Indy trivia at times.

I have no idea where I heard that though.
lol

The guy looked the part though.

I don't think so. Or else, I don't remember seeing it.

BTW, well were on the topic of Hitler and Indy, I may be wrong, but was there ever a potential idea that Hitler was to be featured in Raiders? Since Indy is pulp it would've made sense to have possibly had something like that happen (somewhat how Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds has its own role for Hitler).

I don't think so. I mean notice how they stay away from the political side of Germany and only mention jews before the ritual.

Plus I don't think they had any reason to show Hitler in Raiders.

But who knows?

Plus I don't think they had any reason to show Hitler in Raiders. If you read the novelization, there is a part where Dietrich & Belloq are in a Berlin waiting room about to meet Hitler.

It's actually in the teaser trailer (roughly 1:08).

I always liked that, i thought it was meant to be himmler, coz indy if he wasnt surrounded by nazis would kill hitler

I always assumed it was supposed to be Hitler. It would be a pointless part of the film otherwise.

Have you check the credits? Does it say Michael Sheard as Hitler?

IMBD says he played Hiltler in the film although uncreditied.

He was also Admiral Ozzel in Star Wars

...and more famously in the UK as the evil Mr Bronson in the kids series Grange Hill in which he was brilliant!

Note the Indy style teacher's suit! Yes that is a toupe and there was a great episode where the kids stole it whilst he had gone swimming!

Apparently he also played Hitler more than once...
