was just kinda thinking about this...it mentions in the movie that the grail knight was fighting in the first crusade. It never mentions anything about the last crusade in the movie. Where does this title come from? Was it more about how this would be Indy's "last crusade/adventure". I always thought that they were planning on doing another down the road even at the time they were filming it in the late 80's.

My understanding is that the title refers to the characters in the movie and their journey to find the holy grail.

'The Last Crusade' as the fact that he is the last Crusade to guard the Holy Grail

The “Last Crusade” of the title has a clear association with the quest for the Grail itself. As Indy and Henry Jones Senior become embroiled in the race to find the Grail (which they finally win); they, in effect, take part in what can be defined as a Crusade (albeit inadvertently). As one assumes that the Grail becomes lost forever (after it’s fall into the crevasse and the sealing of the temple/tomb), it's fair to say that there quest is "The Last Crusade" for the Grail… :)

I always thought that "The Last Crusade" was just a posher way of saying "The Last Adventure".
Oh well, you learn something new everyday :whip:

You were still partially correct, since it was meant to convey a double meaning.
As noted, it referred to Indy and his dad undertaking "the last crusade", but it was also a sly reference to the fact that the series was ending.

I agree with the others here that LC it had a double meaning. Just like "Return of the Jedi" had two meanings.

Another thing I always wondered was if Monty Python didn't make a "Holy Grail" movie would they have called Indy 3 "Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail"?

I kind of doubt it. That title is a bit too obvious and simple. The Last Crusade has more mystery surrounding it.

I have to say that, like Raiders and KOTCS, I prefer the idea of the MacGuffin/artefact in the title. TOD should have been something like 'Indiana Jones and the Stones of Doom'. TLC could have been something like 'Indiana Jones and the Grail Crusade'. I'm sure there are better titles, but you get my drift. ;)

Oh come on, haha! I dunno, I like the title Temple of Doom. It adequate and at the same time its intriguing. Its like a temple. But not just any temple...a temple of, wait for it! Doom!

Those titles are too obvious and on the nose. There's definitely much more mystery, intrigue and interest in the existing, somewhat veiled titles.
Even Raiders isn't called -
"Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark of the Covenant."
Crystal Skull is the worst title, but it's not as bad as your other suggestions.

I'm just imparting the notion... Like I said, they were the first things off the top of my head. The ‘Raiders’ title however (like KOTCS), does acknowledge the artifact/treasure being sought... and that was my point.

It's subjective I guess. I think the reason this thread was started was that there was some confusion over the meaning of the moniker "Last Crusade'. I don’t think that confusion was borne out of the title being particularly clever, but rather that it’s a fairly nondescript title in the first place.
‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ on the other hand, may be obvious, but it sort of does what it says on the tin. And in a way, the title itself cuts out the need for several lines of expositional dialogue… and I think that’s one of the reasons it’s quite a clever title.
‘Temple of Doom’ is an adequate title (as you state), as it sort of sets the pantomime tone for the movie… but IMHO, it also adds to the feeling that the movie is more generic than ‘Raiders’... and I think that's somewhat indicative of the movie lacking a clear narrative goal (IMHO) i.e. everything sort of just happens and Indy falls into it.

The Last Crusade is a wonderful title. It does have a double meaning. Implying that it is Jones's last adventure, as well as referencing the actual Crusades themselves. I don't think they could have picked a better one for this film.

I believe Spielberg did address this once, and admitted that- if not for the Monty Python version- "IJ and the Holy Grail" could've easily been the title.
The Python film was also one reason he was reluctant to use the Grail as a MacGuffin.

HEY Darth Vile, I love the Temple of Doom title b the way. It does sound like I'm mocking it bur I'm not.....in fact, I think its my favorite title of all four.
Also, I remember someone a long time ago posting a thread about "What if all movies had Raiders as a subject instead of Indiana Jones?" This has probably been discussed, but I think it would've been GREAT!
Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Raiders of the Temple of Doom. (Too many 'of's' maybe, Raiders of the Doomed Temple.).
Raiders of the Last Crusade.
Raiders of the Crystal Skull Kingdom/ Raiders of the Crystal Skull./Raiders of the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Raiders of the Curse of the Black Pearl....Oh WAIT!....

Raiders of the Temple of Doom.
I remember a letter to the "Further Adventures" comic that asked about the new film, Raiders of the Temple of Death. :D

Haha, damn....I like the Raiders in front of the titles idea. But screw it, I'm already used to Indiana Jones and the...beginning. Hell, when I saw the movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark already had his name in front. It doesn't bother me....its just a cool idea.
