EVER WONDERED WHAT ALL THAT ALIEN SYMBIOLOGY MEANT???

I know I have. you know all those added 'extras' on the keypad that stray away from the likes of hyphens '-', asterisks '*' and currency terms '£' '$' '€'. etc., just to name a few.

There are too many to mention, but when referring to accents and stresses on words, as the languages evolve, I see symbols I am not entirely familliar with, and what their values represent and how to apply them in writing, or orally. Look at your text messaging facility when you type the '@' sign and you should see a whole host of them.

Now i know the mathematicians and computer programme writers amongst you will see this as an opportunity to run circles around us.
I was looking for the 'figure eight' sign that sits sideways but can't find it. To a greater '^' or lesser '^' extent.

yes '^' it's a mistake, but as I explained I can't figure out the computer syntax. and i hope syntax is the correct terminology. Was i looking for intergers??? (arrow signs posting left and right)

Please display examples of these strange alien symbols. And maybe a brief descriptor of their origins.

Those who write angelic script need not apply. I have tried some research in the 'complete idiots guides' , but it seems i have created a knew genre of 'eejit'. (excuse the colloqualism!)

We can educate one another.

You mean the infinity symbol? ∞

You can find it using Character Map.

If you have Windows, go to Start (on Vista, it's the Windows symbol), and then go to All Programs, then the Accessories folder, then System Tools. Then right-click on the Character Map application. When given the little gray box of commands, click on Send To > and then Desktop (Create Shortcut). Now, you'll have a shortcut to Character Map on your Desktop, ready to use when you want. Open up the application and find the characters you want. The application itself is pretty self-explanatory. Symbols can also be found using Microsoft Word.

If you have Mac, then I can't help you. Look it up.

Thanks WKFF. It's a start...

Ψ I think Spalko likes this one, must be something about the 'Psi'cic in her.

♫ but this one was supposed to be a quaver note, as in music form. But didn't translate well from the character map. Has anyone experienced this type of syntax error? and why it occurs, and please keep it simple as i am a donut.

Also, is it possible to build/create your own glyph? Like with a bit map or something similar.

It's kids play

ø ...what this mean?
# ...this i've seen when referencing music (as in a sharp) but is it a 'hash' also?
<> ...I found these babys. Which i had been looking for.
¬ ...answers on a S.A.E!?
§ ...this one always made me go 'Huh?' -but i'm guessing the pronounciation is most certainly wrong.
₪ ...and this one looks like a special feature building block from Tetris

-and finally what is the purpose of an '_' (looks like a smiley but is, in fact, an underscore)apart from customizing your email address?

I know you mentioned where i can find them, what i want to know is how we could apply them by submitting examples. If anyone out there has actually got the time and inclination, of course.

You could always try reading; I've found that works most of the time.

Down in the bottom left corner of the character map, the application gives the name of the symbol selected. So, when I select the § symbol, I am told that it is "Section" sign. Similarly, it tells me that ¬ is a "not" sign and ₪ is, in fact, a "New Sheqel" sign rather than a Tetris block.

Now, if I want to investigate further, I can just go to the internet and look up what those signs mean. Lucky me, I already know that the Sheqel is a type of Israeli currency. But, were I to not know that, I could just turn to Wikipedia and look it up.

I would suggest you do that for the other symbols; I'm certainly not going to waste any more time on this.

Hope that was some help.

§

This one reads as "section". It appears in laws a lot.

And I think that particular "not" sign appears in logical reasoning.

ø ...what this mean?

That one is a mathematical term called 'null'. It was something I remember learning in Maths B in my last year of high school. It was used for some kind of complicated algebra math, I can't remember the exact branch. My advice... Wikipedia! ;)

...Yes, this Wiki invention seems to be a great source for referencing. Thankyou for bringing it to my attention. But please be reasonable in your responses as i knew not that you could apply the symbols in the search facility at Wiki, (and yes i am more than capable of reading) and admittedly i didn't care to try.
...but as you may have read i'm guessing some of the symbols have more than one application. I just needed some instruction. A little tutorlage if you will. ( i think i may have invented that word)

I'm sure i mentioned submit your postings if anyone has the time or inclination. It wasn't compulsary! But thanks anyway.

Some of us were not blessed with an education to further our studies and some of the subject matter never entered the criteria. And, well in fairness, i never really cared to ask until now.

Furthermore my brain goes into melt down after two hours of internet use. And i don't have a computer of my own, so rely heavily on Internet cafe.
Or should that read 'café'

No start up instructions there I'm afraid and a 'help' facility that sends me a little dizzy.

Short cut!!!

So short cut quick fix troubleshooting has it's benefits.

I started this thread to dedicate such information.

So, a little patience. Please........ Rome wasn't built in a micro second.

...just to clear that up if it didn't scan too well, when i copy/pasted the quaver symbol from the character map it just returned a box type thing in the message window. It seems to have rectified itself. Bizarre learning curves.

...What's in the box!?

There it goes again, what was once a box shaped symbol where i was referring to a quaver has somehow, mysteriously morphed in to a box again.

This is a strange phenomenum to say the least? it may be a phenommena? I don't know. Don't care. I'm curious as to why the quaver/box syndrome exists..???

Is there a random glyph generator anywhere on this here micro universe? It seems to have the symptoms of that which is suffering from an identity crisis.

???
