What has happened to our Society?
Everytime I turn around theres, and out right stupid movies like 17 Again, violent video games like Wet, shoting games and movies, sex drug games and movies like, Grand Deft auto, Sex in the City, The Twiilight and so much more. Why can't everyone enjoy Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Get Smart, Lego Indy, Lego Star Wars, Batman, Superman, Leave it to Beaver, Guy Williams Zorro, Two Brothers, Old Yeller, Facing the Giants, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory starring Peter Ostrum things like that.
I would love to hear what everyone els thinks.

Our society is getting better. Not everything needs to be family-friendly and bright and sunny, Rod. Or are you Todd? I never could figure that one out. Chill out, for fck's sake.

WTF?
How is Twilight the fall of human kind? Sex in the City? WTF?
Video games aren't the fall of Society. It's bad parenting that causes a child to become unruly.
I grew up on Beavis and Butthead and Ren and Stimpy. I didn'r become violent, stupid or misbehaved. Grant it that we did all misbehave as a kid, since that is part of growing up.
Every place has murders, drugs, etc etc. You can't change it.
Chill out, jeeze. Go play on your DSi or something!
Todd was the youngest one. Indywolf is Todd. Reedeem is Rod.
I am starting to think they're trolls now.

Ahh yes, it all starts in the home, and if the child keeps disobeying this is what will happen, lying then stealing then murder. Your right we have all disboyed our parents, we are not perfect. But! We can try to do better. And yes we can't stop bad things like Sex in the City or other bad things because we have unruly people who are stubbern and not willing to giveanything a try.Answer me this would Jesus watch or play Sex in the City or Grand Deftauto?
BTW I am on my DSi.

I personally hate Leave it to Beaver lol Some family films I love, some I hate.
I'm a Christian too, but some of my favorite films happen to be rated R, such as Aliens and True Lies. Would you look down upon me for that?
After all Indiana Jones has quite a few not so family like parts as well.;)

I don't know what child is raised perfect in life. Considering most children are unrly. Even with good parenting.
Don't blame stuff like Twilight, Violent Movies and video games on people's behaviour. Those are not to be used as a scapgoat.
Why in the bloody blue hells do you always bring in Jesus, God and religion in here? Are you that sheltered in real life?
Like Robyn has said. I do know some belivers who watch R rated movies and enjoy a violent video game or two. It's their buinsess, not yours. If some church goer wants to watch Saving Pirvate Ryan, Tropic Thunder or even read an errotic novel on a rainy friday night, let them.
You're actin' like everything needs to be dumbed down and enjoyed by the family.
Wanna know why some kids are unruly. It's bad parenting! Not video games, not books like Twilight. It's the parents themselves are to blame.
I have a better forum for you, where you can pretty much have everyone agree with you. Tamatalk (www.tamatalk.com) and Neopets (www.neopets.com). Both seem to be suited for your alley.
Why is it that you feel the need to bring god and Jesus in arguments? When some users on here are non belivers. Are non belivers bad people as well?

Look sis why the heck would ya make a thread like this when there is no need for one? Lay off and mind your own. Don't be a nag.
Besides our society is improving in some aspects. And for every improvement there is a regression.
If Christians were to actually act like Christians then perhaps our world be a lot better?
I am always fascinated by these words of Ghandi.
"Yes I am. I am also a Christian, a Muslim, a Buddhist and a Jew"
"As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. There is no such thing as religion over-riding morality. Man, for instance, cannot be untruthful, cruel or incontinent and claim to have God on his side."

Please understan my friend we have a right to talk about anything Not in here you don't. This is a privately run forum where its upkeep is the sole authority on what's appropiate and what's not.
Considering we have people all over the world coming from different backgrounds, something we require from all our members is to show respect towards the opinions of others.
Admitting what one is and why one behaves as one does is okay. Telling others what's morally right and wrong isn't. And if one is constantly unable to behave in an appropiate manner, perhaps this place isn't suitable for him or her after all.
And if some you are quite not able to realize that by yourselves, we'll be glad to help.

I believe in God and Jesus but still yet I like a good, violent video game or a good horror film. My dad was a preacher and I can remember him renting horror movies when I was a kid.
Also, just because I play violent games and watch horrible movies does not mean that I am gonna go out and commit the acts that I see.
Also, Indywolf; when did Agent Crab say he was Pagan?

Thank you Finn for that infomation. Remember, you are free to live and behave after to what you believe is right, even if the whole world tells you it's wrong.
Just don't preach to the people who might want nothing to do with your message. Let those who do come to you, not vice versa.
I hope this is the last time I need to tell you this. Otherwise, I'm afraid that I'll have to make sure that the next time truly is, no matter how good your intentions might be.

I'm not trying to preach, I wanted to hear what everyone els had to say. My dad says its good to hear other peoples views. Is it not good to debate? Or is it not so I will know from now on?

Telling people that something isn't your cup of tea and explaining why it is so, is called stating your views.
But when you say that "thing X or thing Y should be removed from the face of the earth, everyone join me in this mission", especially when we're talking about things most people have no problem with... that is preaching, no matter how you look at it.
Even if you did mean to simply spark neutral discussion, well... looking at the ire this thread (and some of your earlier statements) have brought up, I'd say you might want to work on your presentation a little more.

True Lies 2, really? I mean, I like the first movie and all, but I don't think a sequel is that great of an idea.
Though, as much as I hate to do this, getting back on topic ...
If our society was getting better why are murders getting worse, commiting suicide, stealing, rapping, children having babies, people dying right after another, I'm sorry to say this but our society is getting worse everyday.
Rapping isn't so bad. Raping is a problem, but rapping can be quite excellent. :p
Oh, wait, NOW back on topic.
I don't believe society is getting particularly worse, or better for that matter when it comes to moral affairs. Basically everything that is happening now has always happened, but it was less publicized due to it being so taboo. Taboo topics are lifting and presentation is being more straightforward, but that's not necessarily a terrible thing. It has become harder to shelter people from the goings on in the world. This has two primary effects on society.
1. Citizens are more well informed about the truth of the state of society.
2. Parents have lost much of their ability to keep their children safe with a wall of ignorance.
Most people I think agree that part one is a good thing. We are people who welcome knowledge. Now to quote some things that are cliche, knowledge is power and power means responsibility. Most people dislike the idea of having greater responsibility, and parents in particular have greater responsibility in raising their children in a society where part two is true.
When I was much younger, I recall some of my friends parents being incredulous that my parents let me watch Indiana Jones when I was even 8. (Little do those parents know, I started at age 3 :whip: ) Perhaps less extreme than some media out nowadays, but I think these parents had similar views to those expressed by Wolf. I - albeit biased - think I turned out to be a morally upstanding man, and I can credit that to a good upbringing. Sure, I watched and played violent and occasionally sexual media even at a rather impressionable young age, but a good, guided upbringing overrides all of that.
NUTSHELL: Media increases knowledge of taboo subjects which parents used to keep children ignorant. This increased knowledge means increased responsibility in parenting and if there is any increase in percentage of crime it is due to a lack of care in child rearing.
Now that my thesis is complete, I have finally made myself tired enough to go to bed. :D
Agent Crab

I sometimes think parents keep their children a bit "too safe". Such as sheltering. A kid isn't stuoid, since most are curious at a young age. You can't sheild a kid from Sex, drugs, etc. They're gonna find out about it sooner or later.
I have watched R rated movies since I was six. My first was Platoon then Total Recall and Heavy Metal. Yes.. Heavy Metal, because i refused to watch that damn Care Bears movie.
I have played some "violent" video games. Mario jumps on innocent Koopas, does he not?
I grew up pretty fine if you say so yourself. I've watched stuff like DBZ in my teen years. Never had an urge to beat up anyone. I played Onimusha, didn't wanna go and attack people with swords.
Violet Indy

I have to agree with a lot of IAdventurer01's thesis.
I will add that because of the growing amount of common knowledge, there's needs to be some boundaries in the media that shows certain images and emphasises certain themes. It's not just the parents, because frankly, they're fighting a freaking tsunami to try to filter what goes on and is shown in the media to their kids and perhaps, it isn't so much to filter what's going on, but explaining it in terms that the kids will understand and terms that are appropriate for their age. Which is how I was brought up.
I had television always avaliable to me as a very young child, and yes, I have seen a lot of movies that weren't always so family oriented (believe it or not, I watched Total Recall when I was very very little, and it never bothered me coz it was an action film and it was set on Mars). At the same time, I used to watch a lot of BTS specials, so I knew from a pretty early age that movies were fake and the violence shown on screen were just special effects. Heck, I even knew the Gremlins were puppets when I was like 5 (doesn't mean I didn't think they were cool!).
I guess the most effect that the media had on me in my childhood; is my accent. I don't have an authetic Australian accent. I have been mistaken many many times (especially recently) by fellow Australians for being an American immigrant. Hard to believe for your guys probably, but it's totally true. My brother's got the same problem.
Morally, I don't like conflict (I was bullied a lot in my youth and had to find ways around it that didn't involve violence, which I still haven't worked out), I am very, very far from promiscious (seriously, I've only had one date in the past 4 years, and am not the type of person to do one night stands, do the math), though I do follow the Christian faith in general, I believe all people have their own path to God no matter what religion (I just don't think a supreme being would be so petty about which religion you join so long as it's not against Him as in like Satanism) and just as much, the hope that there is enough good in humanity for us to try to live in harmony.
So that's pretty much me in a moral nutshell.

This is much better guys, not getting upset, just speaking your mind.
Anyway, your right about shielding children. The parents do there part in the childs life, after that the child must make there own decision may it be bad or good, my parents told me, no matter how good or bad your parents maybe, you still decide if your going to do what is right or wrong.
And I must say I sneaked and played a few violent games, when I was younger, nobody knows just me and my God, but I understand now how the effect of playing violent games has caused me to want to play things that are violent still. Heres a story I want to share with the Raveners, my ex-friend who was a boy :hat: and we would really fight each other of course it was friendly, BTW we had a lot of bruises after fighting, anyway we had just finished playing Halo and playing a Ninja video game :o so we tried reacting the video games. And my mom found out of course  and she gave me a good speech and said it was not lady like, and I feel really bad till this day.
It seems parents always find out things that you don't want them to find out :(

Oversheilding a child is bad, though. Overly sheilded children grow up to be sheltered from the real world. You can't sheild a child from everything you assume is bad. Blood, sex, etc. They are gonna experince it one way or another.
Kids are not stupid. They don't need to be sheilded and sheltered. I have watched R movies as a kid. I wasn't sheilded and sheltered to the point I was made into a wuss. I was allowed. Did I grow up violent?
Video games and TV does not make a kid vilolent.
Oversheilding can effect a child as well.
A Kid needs to be taught what is real and what isn't real or if he or she is mature enough to handle it.

I use to think my parents were shielding me from a lot of things, when I was younger my mom told me public schools and camps were the worse thing out there, but in my mind I would say, yeah whatever, so when I was 12 I went to a public summercamp and the children ran me crazy and beat me up. Sorry, but I just have to out my two cents about the whole movie, game, music thing because frankly I'm getting pretty sick of it.
As far as the whole "r-rated movies, music and violent video games turns kids into uncontrollable brats" thing concerns.. those kids were probably already brats to begin with. If this kind of media would really influence our behavior that much we would have to fight off endless waves of tiny homicidal maniacs, right?
I think the media industry cannot be blamed for the behavior of the children who play the games, listen to the music and watch the movies. Why not? Because they aren't meant to be watched, heard or played by kids, that's why. And the companies do put ratings on the packaging, so EVERYONE with more than one braincell can see that those kind of media aren't suitable for younger ages. If they do end up in the hands of kids, then we need to wonder HOW they got there in the first place. And the answer for that is very simple: bad store policies and ignorant parents. I find it ridiculous that it's mostly those parents that are complaining then afterwards that the companies should have done a better job at protecting their children from their harmful products.
ERRRRR. WRONG. That's your job. Or have you perhaps forgotten what parenting means? You can't just shove off your responsibilities as a parent on someone/thing else! You chose to have kids, you'll have to deal with it.
There, rant done! I hope no one is offended by any of this (I'm sure that whoever is a parent on here are great parents themselves) but I really needed to get that out of my system.
Still, I don't particularly see anything wrong with letting kids in on more mature forms of media. I mean, they're going to know about it sooner or later anyways. Better sooner when you can still keep an eye on them than later when they can do God know's what without your parental supervision. And personally, I was always left very free in the things I played, watched or listened to. I often got try-outs to see if I could handle things: I got to watch It (with the scary clown) when I was seven or so and I got my first few sips of beer (which I found disgusting and didn't drink again until I was sixteen) when I was eleven. I'm pretty sure that didn't turn me into a horrible human being.

Thanks Trennas.
Indywolf. If you wanna sheild your fture child, so be it. Being overly protective, sheild them from everything you assume is bad turns them into total pussies. You don't want them to be brats, either. As Trennas said. Media does not make kids uncontrolable. Bad parenting does.
Come now, Indywolf. Have you seen a bratty, spoiled kid cry and cry and cry alot, when they don't get their way? Pout when they can't have this toy or candy? Some parents let their kids throw a fit, until they give in and give the child a deseired item.
I watched R rate dmovies when I was six. I learned what was right and what was wrong. What was fantasy and what was real. Hell, I even watched Robocop as a kid where the guy was being blasted to pieces. I even had a Robocop action figure.
I turned out fine from watchin' that.
Of course, a chold cursing hears it from the parents or other kids. They are going to be exposed to it as well for drugs, violence, beer, etc etc etc.
Just liek censoring bare asses on TV. A kid as seen a bareass. Young toddlers do prance around in the buff as well.

I don't plan on overly shielding my children, I plan on protecting from the evil out there as long as I can. I will tell them the evil that is out there and why I'm protecting them, and that they have to decide if they will do wrong or right things.
And yes I have seen children crying and crying because they want there way I was like that when I was a todler, but I never got my way because my parents never allowed that.

Now THAT was bad-ass!
Although in retrospect I don't remember much more of it besides them eating a lot of pizza, cowabunga and April's bright yellow outfit that made my eyes burn from the inside :p
All kidding (no pun intended here) aside, you have to remember that different media (whether it are shows, movies, games, music, magazines or freaking chewing gum stickers) all have their own target groups. Yes, there is a target group for people who like to play violent games. Yes, there are also target groups for the innocent kiddy fun stuff. My point being that if you don't like something, it's probably not meant for you to begin with. If I hear a horrible pop song on the radio, I turn it off. If I see some dumb-ass no brain reality tv show about a bunch of people being stupid in a house, I turn it off. Not my thing! Sure, I'm annoyed that they exist, but I don't go screaming out that they should be banned merely because I think they should be. I'm sure a lot of people do enjoy watching stuff like that, I'm just not one of them.
Thankfully :p

Satipo Impaled with Spears through Neck and Head.
Barranca needeled with dozens blow darts.
Nepalese Henchmen lit on fire, shot in the head and face, and burnt to death.
Toht seers his flesh on hot metal.
Nazis shot, thrown from moving vehicles, crushed, fall and splattered and run over.
Nazis bodies blown apart by lightning through face and eyes, chest and hearts and engulfed in flame.
People's faces melt, implode, and explode before being tossed into a fruit salad of human flesh, thrown into the air, and pulled back down into a space far smaller then they can fit into.

What has happened to our Society?
It seems like many have shared your concerns throughout history... We need to relax.
"The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for
authority, they show disrespect to their elders.... They no longer
rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents,
chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their
legs, and are tyrants over their teachers."
Socrates, 469 BC–399 BC
"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on
frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond
words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and
respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise
[disrespectful] and impatient of restraint"
Hesiod, 8th century BC
"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of
today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for
parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as
if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is
foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest
and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."

And for something a tad bit more current...
Vernon: What did you want to be when you were young?
Carl: When I was a kid, I wanted to be John Lennon.
Vernon: Carl don't be a goof! I'm trying to make a serious point here...I've been teaching, for twenty two years, and each year...these kids get more and more arrogant.
Carl: Aw bull****, man. Come on Vern, the kids haven't changed, you have! You took a teaching position, 'cause you thought it'd be fun, right? Thought you could have summer vacations off...and then you found out it was actually work...and that really bummed you out.
Vernon: These kids turned on me...they think I'm a big ****in' joke.
Carl: Come on...listen Vern, if you were sixteen, what would you think of you, huh?
Vernon: Hey...Carl, you think I give one rat's ass what these kids think of me?
Carl: Yes I do.
Vernon: You think about this...when you get old, these kids; when I get old, they're gonna be runnin' the country.
Carl: Yeah?
Vernon: Now this is the thought that wakes me up in the middle of the night...That when I get older, these kids are gonna take care of me.
Carl: I wouldn't count on it!

YOU were the one who said the world is messed up, because someone plays Grand Theft Auto or blames it on the media.

When it's not. Using Media as a scapegoat is pretty much lame. Media shouldn't be to blame. Blaming Twilight, violent games, etc is pointless. Blame the parents. Blame them for using TV as the babysitter. My nephews played Grand Theft Auto. They aren't violent and unruly. I've watched Violent movies growing up. I didn't grow up unruly.

This is just like Jack Thompson who blames Media and video games for violent children.

I think it's nobody's fault but the stupid, uncaring kids who do the crimes. It's the parent's fault to an extent. I can understand that as young kids we need to guide them, but when they become teens - our reach is lessened, and kids start doing things on their own.
Ours is a society in which the underage are protected by law from suffering over their retarded actions. I think teens need to be treated like adults and tried like adults in all criminal manners. That would be a great help IMO.

Maybe you should act normal. Jeez :hat: And saying bad words, it shows how the person has nothing to say, it seems you don't really have anything to really chat about.
Meerkat your right, media has everything to do with everyones life, thats why Hawkeye and others say so many mean things, nothing good to say.
If you want change you have to admit that our world is messed up.
Tiffany I can see you won't listen to them, maybe you'll listen to me? If you really want to be a good girl, then you gotta stop driving everyone crazy.. How do you think you're helping people find God by coming to a Indiana Jones board and shoving the Bible in their face just to piss them off? In truth you're probably sadly driving people away from Christianity. It's simple, if you don't like anything but family friendly media and if adults kissing, swearing, fighting etc. easily offends you that's ok, but you really shouldn't be watching Indiana Jones or hanging out on a board like this... You know what I mean?
Our world is messed up, but it's nothing at all new! It's been that way for thousands of years!
Have you ever read this before?:
"Give to Caesar what is Caesars and If the people in the town will not welcome you, go outside the town and shake their dust off of your feet."
I like you girl, but you gotta try and listen to reason k?
A good tip for you:
If you see a thread that you KNOW will offend you, DO NOT ENTER.

I absolutely agree with you, I've seen R rated movies since I was 5, and there has never in my life been a film, tv show, or song that has ever influenced me to bad person..

Nicely said Robyn!! I agree 100%. I happen to love watchin and readin about serial killers and I grew up watchin horror movies which is my fave type of movies.. One show I have recently started watchin is "Women Who Kill" and I love the show. But it doesn't wanna make me up and kill my husband..well.... ...lol...but anyway I don't allow my 7 year old to play games like Grand Theft Auto and Saint's Row. Although I do like to play them myself.
It's not because I think he's gonna be violent or anything like that. It's because I don't believe they are appropriate for kids his age.

Thanks Robyn.
Indywolf/Todd/Tiff, whatever the hell you wanna be called. You need to grin and bear it. Swearing is part of life. If you don't like it, don't preach, please. Robyn made some fine points here. If you don't like it. Ignore it. The Indiana Jones films were never really "Family Friendly". If you want a family friendly film, go watch a Disney, Pixar or Dream Works movie. There are plently of Family Friend movies that everyone can enjoy.
I've watched Violent and R rated movies growing up. I grow up well. I was raised well. I knew what was right and wrong. I had a Robocop toy even! No one should be reported for swearing, either. Ignore it.
Please, please.. PLEASE stop with the White Knighting by bringing Jesus on an Indiana Jones Forum. Again, Robyn said mostly everything I wanted to say.
@ Meerkat. Like i said in my previous post. Media isn't to blame. It's taking the Jack Thompson route. I mean. You're the one who made an Anti Twilight thread and pretty much bashed it by what others said. I've read the books. I wasn't impressed. I don't like Twilight and I pretty much ignore it. If you are so "Anti" something. Learn to ignore. Move on. Grow up. It's just like some other baised asshat on DA/Youtube who pretty much does the same thing.
We can't shelter and sheild a kid from every "bad thing" we see or hear. God forbid, a kid will grow up sheltered and oblivious to his or her nature.
@ Meerkat and Indywolf
If you two TRULY hate swearing. Then ignore it. Then again, if you truly dislike it, then there are other forums that don't allow swearing and everything is pretty much "G-rated".
Sorry for the TL;DR crap.

Thanks Crab, you said it quite nicely yourself! You can't shelter a child from EVERYTHING, but they do need to be taught right from wrong, and it's up to them to WANT to be a good person, you can't force someone to be good by putting blinders over their eyes until they're 18 and then expect them to be able to function in the outside world normally. I use to babysit a little girl and boy, they were 13 and 11 who were so sheltered they weren't allowed to watch anything except Ben Her and My Fair Lady, they didn't go to public school, they weren't allowed to listen to music or play with non-Christian children and I remember one day the 13 year old looking at two insects mating and her saying "Mommy told me they're getting married when they do that!".... Do you realize how scared these kids will be when they grow up and enter the outside world??!! Like you Crab, I have great parents who taught me right from wrong, and like I said I saw my first R rated movie when I was 5 or 6. But all kids are different, some kids can handle more adult things at a younger age and some can't. My Mom wouldn't let me watch ANYTHING I wanted, but she knew certain films I would be able to handle.

Thanks KiKi, It's what's in your heart that counts. I myself consider there to be two different types of horror film, one type I like and one I don't. Like Aliens is one of my favorite films and it is considered a type on horror, but the killer horrors I always hated. I'm into the action/adventure films mostly.:hat: But I also love comedy, suspense, drama as well, I'm your basic film freak:up:

Hey I'm a Christian, but I mean dang, not everything is bad. I enjoy some shooter games. Like Bioshock, thats a game I love, it has people geneticly altering themselves, and shooting and crazy stuff like that, and I like playing Halo and Gears of War with my friends, gears is a pretty bloody game. Fallout 3.
And I like some suspensful movies as well. I'm not too concerned about our society, more so about our government.

It's ironic this thread's author is the same one who created this (http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=19457) thread, a week before Halloween, which is still a full day away.

Yeah, I've avoided the topic of irony in relation to this unnamed thread author because I find it's too easy, too obvious, and is all around depressing when you think about it. But don't get me wrong, you're right. :hat:

I gotta say, I'm almost 17, I'm a Christian, I believe and love Jesus. But, I do have to agree when it comes to kids you can't shelter them away from the world. My parents are Christians but I made the choice on my own that that's what I wanted to be too. But I don't stick it in peoples face.
Half my friends smoke weed, we had a Halloween party and some of them were drunk, but they are all really nice caring people, but they do some things that I don't agree with, but I don't smash them about it.
And I ain't no perfect person either, I got my problems, and personal things I deal with, I cuss like a sailor for one. And similar to Robyn I was aloud to make my own choices, and I think I saw my first "R" rated movie when I was like 10 or something. As I said perviously alot of my friends smoke and drink, and have offered it to me plenty of times and I make my own choice to tell them no, simply because I just really don't want to.
My aunt has 4 kids, ages 13 down to 4, and they are quite sheltered from the world. When I was 15 there was a girl I liked and when I said something to my uncle about it the first thing he said was "A boy your age doesn't need to be thinking about girls yet". And I mentioned that to my mom and she was like "That's pretty much the only thing a boy your age thinks about".
So my 13 year old cousin is getting older and I'm concerened he may get "confused" about girls and what not when his dad tells him its bad. I grew up with my dad telling me it was all ok, and he talked about how having sex after marrage would be better for me but he didnt force it on me. I messed up like most boys my age tend to do and I talked with my dad about it and it was all cool, and I learned from it, and I would love to go with after marrage now that I learned first hand.
I agree we see too much sex and violence on TV and what not, but I never complain about it, I just put up with it. And as I said before I own my fair share of shooter games ;)
Well if anyone can read this and get anything out of it that's my 2 cents worth. :hat:
