View Full Version : Can we get Indy around the globe ?

Cheers Montana. Any snow round your way yet ? We got a light dusting here in Devon overnight - but our proximity to the South West coast usually keeps it at bay. Still cold though !
Yes, we've had quite a bit of snow on and off, but it's only about an inch thick now. It turned sleety earlier today, which helped to get rid of some of what had already fallen.
We have an outside temperature gauge, which is sheltered somewhat by being in the open wood store, which went down to -8.4C a couple of nights ago. Our hot water pipes were frozen until midday following. I heard that around 30-40 miles west it went down to -18C.
For a lot of members around the world this is probably just a walk in the park, but for us Brits it's like the end of the world!

It's all relative ;) Those in locations used to snow probably don't give it a second thought. But as you said, give us a sprinkling and it's the snow-pocalypse !
Tell me about it! About 2 years ago (4th Feb. 2009), I was stuck in Scotland the day I was meant to fly out because of the worst snowstorm they'd had in 18 years! A couple of inches of snow paralyzed most of the southeastern U.K.! Waited in the airport for 10 hrs. before being told the flight was cancelled and had to stay an extra few days. The radio & TV were reporting schools closed, buses routes not running in London, etc. all due to a mere SPRINKLING of snow.
Pussies!:p:whip:
It's still a crying shame that the original Indy got lost but I like what you wrote about him having to burn the diary to stay warm.:D Nice photos, Inky, especially this one:

Sorry to hear you're not settled yet, so good luck on that front, inky.
Don't worry about mini-Indy, I'm sure he doesn't mind waiting for his next trip. Just sort out the important stuff first!

YES! Stopped in to get my mail and what do I see? Indy's back!
I can't tell you how psyched I am! What a load off!
I offered a reward to anyone in the mail room to find him and posted the return address...and the package was found. A bit bruised and battered but he's all here.
"SIGH"
Where shall I send him?
I DON'T BELIEVE IT!!! WOW! What FANTASTIC news!!!!!
How much was the reward, Rocket? Nice going on your part. Hats off.:hat:
This was how the remainder of the U.S. leg was scheduled before Indy took a trip into The Twilight Zone:
11 - USA: Orlando (theinterchange)
12 - USA: Indianapolis (bonoferox)
13 - USA: Culver City (Lance Quazar)
14 - USA: LA / SoCal (Pale Horse)
15 - USA: San Francisco (NickTurner)

I would cringe everytime this damned thread would pop up, I had to try something! At first it was lunch for the mailroom, (pizza or something) but it didn't yield. So when I thought it looked hopeless, (the mail room is a pit!) I upped it to $50 for the individual who found it.
Took a month after that.:hat:
I'll be glad when it's over and property of another custodian.
The $50 reward is very noble of you, Rocket. I'm wondering if the package was sent & returned or if it ever left the mail room at all. It's been almost 6 months!
Inky Skin is going to be THRILLED!
As for: 11 - USA: Orlando (theinterchange)
It was decided to scratch him off the list since he didn't seem to be reliable due to the fact that he has only posted at The Raven 2 times and his failure to get in contact with you so Bonoferox in Indianapolis is probably next.
Inky (or Lance) will have the final say on that.

True. Memphis is awaiting the return of the great adventurer. :whip:
Antarctica would have been sweet.
...but maybe a trip to Montreal for The Adventure of Archeology?Ooh, now that's enticing! When Indy was in Montreal last May, several photos at the Old Port are right on the grounds of the venue!
Harvey wanted in and is still around!:)In my opinion, Harvey should have a go but Lance said the list was closed and he's in charge while Inky is preoccupied with more important things. We need to hear back from everybody and see if they're still willing to take part. (See: post #242 for the last roster.)

When Indy does make it to L.A....say he never got here and hold onto him until R.S. and the fellow Raveners pony up a profit.
Let's see...Disney's (Temple of the Forbidden Eye) for a two-day pass is $99.00, plus parking @ $14.00, plus food, lodging, gas, and the requisite souvenirs ...
Starting Ransom will be about $350.00.... :whip: :p
Hysterical, Mr. Horse! I was thinking along the same lines.:D
Anyway, I just PMed Inky to tell him Rocket's good news. Hopefully, he chime in soon enough. Can't wait to hear what he has to say...

Still looking forward to having Indy visit San Francisco, taking in Oakland and the East Bay! (Maybe Mount Diablo would be a good stand-in for the famous logo!:D )
Just one caveat - my daughter is getting married April 7 so between work and wedding prep, not forgetting model projects and beer brewing, it will have to be after all that. Shouldn't be a problem, but I can't be the first taker. Rocket, the search for an initial host of the second coming, er, too grand that! - The Indy World Tour Mark II, continues!

Ok chaps...
I'm keen to get Indy on the road again as soon as possible, but starting a new job etc has prevented me from giving this project as much attention as it deserves.
What I propose is that Rocket sends Indy on to Lance and we sort out the other slots at a later date. My rationale is as follows - Lance and I are good friends and I trust him to take care of Indy and do something creative with him in the short term, plus it allows Rocket to get shot of what seems to be a bad luck talisman ASAP and keep the momentum going.
Provided Lance agrees, I'll contact Rocket with a forwarding address in the next couple of days.
Onwards !

I'm considering this over.
Rocket is still on the forum, he is posting quite regularly, but he has ignored entreaties from numerous parties for information and updates about the whereabouts of the figure.
The details of the disappearance of the figure and its "miraculous" return are themselves rather suspicious.
There's no reason for Rocket not to have sent the figure in the more than two months since it "returned" or at the very least for him to respond to the numerous messages that have been sent his way from multiple parties.
Either he doesn't have it or he has no intention of ever sending it. His behavior is bordering on pathological at this point.
Either way, it's gone and I'm not going to waste any more energy on this or give Rocket any further validation or attention.
I'm considering this over.It is NOT over! Indy WILL circumvent the globe and this project will not die!:)
In Rocket's defence, he has been away from home for the past while and he asked his family to put Indy in the mail (but I'm guessing it's not their #1 priority).
Cripes, Rocket paid $50 out of his own pocket to get the figure back from the deadbeats at the post office. Please, Lance, cut him some slack.:)

I'm happy to apologize and retract if I'm proven wrong.
But given that Rocket has been posting away in other forums consistently (even as early as this morning), the "out of town" excuse doesn't fly for ignoring the repeated queries and communiques from me and other sources. If nothing else, that's just rude.
But given his mysterious silence on the matter, the fact that two months have gone by and the suspicious stories about Indy's "amazing" return** the picture that it all paints is not a promising one at all.
**The story about the package returning via bribery don't quite hold water, either. Would a postal employee risk their job by stealing a random package? I guess it's at least possible, though extremely unlikely. However, would an employee risk exposure by accepting bribes and returning said package? It's a bit hard to swallow. But, again, I welcome the chance to be proven wrong.

Once again, thanks for putting me in the mix. If someone wants to get a figure together now and set it for delivery to me this Saturday or Monday, I'm planning to make stops at all of the Memphis sites above one last time before moving to the Buckeye State. Guys, the list was finalized some time ago.
I think that we should stick to the plan, barring some really extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, such as meeting one of the principles (Ford, Spielberg, Lucas, etc.) or a one-time-only trip to an Indy-esque locale (Tunisia, etc.)
Otherwise, if you wish to be added to the roster at the end of the line, say so here and Inky can address that when the time arises. (But that will be a ways off, so let's be patient.)
Next up after me is Pale Horse. I freely admit I've had the figure for too long and will be sending him on very soon. I have a number of pics in the can and a few more locales to scratch off before he heads out.....

I'm aware of that and glad to have been included. I was merely mentioning an opportunity (to meet the IndyCast team and possibly Jock from Raiders) that came up (which I mentioned a few months back was a possibility) and didn't hear back from anyone on either mention.
Was just offerin', is all. Wasn't trying to screw up anyone's plans. :(

And I promise to get at least another set or two up before Pale Horse can possibly complete his. I've been working a bunch the past couple days.
Don't think there will be much issue with the narrative. Pale Horse is sending Indy back to me for a very brief return before I pass him on.

There are one or two LARGE Los Angeles landmarks that Indy has not yet visited.
But don't worry, all SIGNS point to only very short return. But it's something I really 'WOOD like to do.The Hollywood sign! Are you going to take him to the Chinese & Egyptian theatres? How 'bout the Capitol Records building? Indy is probably a fan of Miles Davis who was on their label.
By the way, your 'word balloons' are an excellent idea. Wish I had done that with my photos!:(
I went to the Getty Museum a year after it opened. Pretty slick place. Too bad you didn't put Indy in the photo with the stained glass window.

Check out my "sneak peek" pic on post #632....A-ha, I see it now. So Indy has already been to Grauman's/Mann's. Keep 'em coming, Lance!
Just wanted to chime in and say a MASSIVE thank-you to all participants so far. You've taken a simple idea and made it richer and more exciting than I could ever have hoped. Long may Indy circle the globe :whip:Indeed. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to particpate rather than just be a spectator. Lance Quazar's 'word balloons' are a great idea and Pale Horse's teaser looks extremely promising. Special credit must be given to Le Saboteur for promptly forwarding the figure from me to Billy Ray in order to catch his unique chance of Afghanistan locales in time and especially to Rocket Surgeon for dishing out $50 from his own pocket to rescue Indy from the nether regions of his local post office. Of course, it was your idea to begin with so you deserve the biggest 'thumbs up', Inky Skin. A true team effort!
This is kind of like 'Indiana Jones Meets Phileas Fogg' except that it's taking Indy much longer than 80 days. As of today, it's been 510 days! (06 May, 2010 - 07 October 2011) Anyone feel like calculating how many miles/kilometres?
Inky, will you be updating the map anytime soon?

Great pictures, Lance. And educational, too!
It would be cool to get a shot of Mini-Indy looking at Harrison Ford's star in the pavement of Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

While we wait for more of Indy's travelogue, here's a trippy tribute to the #10, which (at the current rate) will probably be the number of years it takes for Mini-Indy to circumnavigate the globe:

@Lance - Way to go out on a high ! If I believed in voodoo, I could almost imagine a bit of Ford's DNA transferring from those hand prints and imbuing our little mass-produced Hasbro buddy with some real Indy magic ;)
@Pale Horse - That's a helluva teaser. I'm a huge Disney-phile, so seeing Travelling Indy on such hallowed ground is a real thrill for me. Until I can get there myself, I'll have to live vicariously through him. Damn - I hope at least a Club 33 matchbook ends up in the Grail Diary !
I'm going to do some thread excavation this weekend and freshen up the running order (check that everyone is still present, correct and ready to receive). At the suggestion of Stoo, I may also rehash the map and try and crunch the mileage figures. Stay tuned :whip:

Those in the know, know that Walt never got to eat at his restaurant. Tragically, one of the CM busboys said that this was his favorite table. In true PH fashion I said: "Walt died in 66' and this club opened in 67'. Explain that". I smiled as he sheepishly walked away.
But the image above was inspired from this window, and it's the same window that Traveling Indy ate at. This is the view, from that window.

Truly, that green bean/broccoli/pea dollop there above it (on the right) that looks like it was scooped from a lunch cafeteria was the bomb. Everything made there comes from a central kitchen 2/3 stories below. When I worked at the French Market back in the day, leftovers from the club were put out for the employee kitchen. Waste not Want not.
Best thing about the Club, for us...is the desserts, and cocktails. The rest is just somewhat ... similar.

Indy is looking a little worn around the edge of his hat! Who knew that item was painted? Shoes are scuffed too, though that is to be expected from all that travel. So, the weather finally cooperates today and it was a GLORIOUS fall day in Oakland (where I'm working). Way better than summer which is usually foggy and chilly! So I set out with my 'real' camera (Canon Rebel XTi), tripod and traveling Indy in search of Fortune and Glory! First I have to get there, so I try and get Indy riding the BART. Taking the tank to SF? Hmm. I'd be afraid it would get damaged! I can try some more local shots first to see how it looks 'driving' down the street - that's reasonable!
Funny story on the tank. My wife finally notices it and asks me where I got it and how much it cost. Huh? I say? I MADE this thing from scratch - there was no tank made (in this scale anyway). So I'm describing how I drew up plans, ordered big plastics card sheets, punched out rivets, made barbed wire, crew figures, and how it took 2 years plus etc. She says - "Where was I?" lol
I guess things like tanks just don't register on the female brain! (On the other hand she likes football, and that bores me silly....)

So now Indy passes by the Paramount Theatre in Oakland.
It starts getting funny when you set up a tripod in the street. This woman comes up to me and very aggressively DEMANDS to know what I am doing... and why! Now, this is my first direct communication with someone on the street while I'm busy with the camera. I'm fiddling with the aperture, the focus, getting Indy positioned just right, adding a flash 'cos you can't see our hero etc. I'm taken aback! So I reply, slightly snarkily, "I'm taking pictures!". "Duh!" I should have added! So in the end it's cool and I explain how there's a web site - Raiders - with a forum - Raven ... well you know the rest!
A second woman approaches me later and I have to explain again. I need cards to hand out! I need to make up some url cards so these curious folk can get in on the fun!
Anyway the pics came out pretty good! Maybe a diffuser of some kind would make the flash less 'harsh' on Indy, but without the flash he was a silhouette only. BTW are the pics still too big? I keep cutting the size down, but ....

Your pics are wee bit big but these latest ones are vertical so they don't really bother me, personally. My only gripe is BIG horizontal shots (in ANY thread) like your tank photo, because they screw up the format and it can be a pain in the butt to scroll across when reading text.
I resized 'em for you all :hat:
The following picture is NOT AUTHORIZED!!! A guard at the Catholic Cathedral of Christ the Light shooed me off! I will refrain from editorial comment as I don't want to annoy any Catholics... But I'm posting it anyway:up:

I'll try it in downtown Antioch first. Looks more like an historic American town - outside my house is too modern!Sounds good, Nick!:D Last year, you posted some sample shots outside of your house with your own figure...Modern neighbourhood, for sure, but that's O.K. Try Indy with your tank outdoors wherever possible!

Now I'm doubly motivated! (Just don't tell my "trouble 'n' strife"!)
Very nice building. Where is it?
It is in Oakland, by Lake Merritt (see below).
Indy pays a visit to the the Scottish Rite Temple - not because of his dubious Scottish heritage but looking for clues to other 'lost' temples! This is home to the Freemasons.

Passing by the Camron-Stanford House on Lakeside drive in Oakland. Victorian mansions like this used to ring the lake. Now there is only this one preserved as a museum.

Lovely view across Lake Merritt. Nice day for a stroll.
http://home.comcast.net/~IndianaJonesToys/TIndy_42.jpg
A view of the cathedral across the lake. Be careful zooming your camera! It makes the background look out of focus because it is magnified! In theory I can preview the depth of field in my camera but out in the field in bright sun squatting down to view through the camera on the tripod it's tough to actually see anything! Well now I know what to watch for.

Wow! Never heard of it! Googled it and I've walked past that spot before too. Sounds like an intriguing place to visit. Right next door to Fairyland lol! I suppose a bonsai would just be a normal sized tree to our traveling pal! But for this outing Indy was on the west side of the lake only.
I don't know how this would go down, but a friend at work is visiting the Philippines for 3 weeks leaving this weekend. No idea what photos we would get out of this, but he is absolutely trustworthy so I would not hesitate to trust T Indy to him. I'm just not sure it's 'fair' to fellow Raveners who have been waiting for their own chance, but it would get Indy to another spot on the planet! So what do you say? OK for a 3 week detour? Indy riding a Jeepney? Or keep Indy going on the established schedule? I'm cool either way but I want to hear from folks here and make sure I'm not way off base with this suggestion!

I want to hear from folks here...You've got him, there's an opportunity. Like anything else, use you best judgement and do what Indy would do...thats what this is all about.
Three weeks will come and go and we'll still be here.

Nick - a detour works fine for me as I'd describe this as an "exceptional" opportunity. All I'd say is try and avoid mailing Indy anywhere until after the busy festive period. Loving the pics so far - especially the technical discusssion on how to achieve best results / business cards.

Great to know folks are open to adventures! :hat:
Now why the heck should I be surprised by that, considering where I am!!!
I'm cluing my mate into the travels of Indy on the Raven, just to be sure he knows what he's in for! He's also planning to take a few test shots I believe. Sounds like a place rife with possibilities, so here's hoping it's on! :whip:
Oh and he was planning to just take Indy - the 'stuff' would stay with me until he returns. No mailing involved at all! I'll get him to 'stamp' the passport though!

Again I have been neglecting this thread. Great pics Nick! I just got the same camera a couple of weeks ago and LOVE it. It's my first "real" camera. Wish I had had it in Afghanistan, but it probably would have wound up full of dust so just as well.

Jack London used to hang out here, and who knows, perhaps the ale inspired his "credo":
I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my spark should burn out
in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom
of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

And now test shots from my mate going to Manila. I did ask if I could use his name or a handle, but I think what he gave was rather rude, so I'm going to double check before using!!
First shot is Indy crossing Franklin at 17th Street in Oakland. That's Rico's Diner on the corner - never been in there though. We (the office lunch gang) prefer the Hawaiian or Ichiro Sushi place a few doors up. Strangely it appears Indy does not cast a shadow!

Indy visits my favorite bookstore - Dan Webb! He specializes in military books - Tanks baby! - so you can see my interest. It's official! Indy is heading out to the Philippines for 3 weeks. Handover was made over pints of beer in a pub
I took the liberty of supplying Indy with a few tools. Inspired by the movies and Raveners' imagination Indy gets into some adventures along with his travels. So in certain cases Indy might want to use a flaming torch, whip (coiled and deployed) or if all else fails, revolver. In most cases Indy will happily play tourist, but on occasion it might be fun to see him "in action". I also included a clear stand which might prove useful.
That's a lovely part of Oakland, Nick. I walked around the lake a few years back. Did Indy happen to visit the oldest bonsai tree in the Americas?

Indiana Jones crossing the street!
LOL!
But it's crossing the street .... IN CHINATOWN! :D
Is it getting easier?
Perhaps so. I used a different technique for sure. The initial shots were 'Indy tourist', taking in the sites, up close to the camera, usually eliminating real people as they tended to spoil the shot, either messing up the perspective or by being bleary because of the narrow aperture and thus longer exposure time. The bonsai shots were taken without using the tripod, and for giggles I tried to get Indy together with real people. That seemed to work out, so in Chinatown I tried to get Indy right there on the street with the crowd. No tripod, auto exposure, slightly wide angle on the lens (which is more forgiving of focus), holding Indy further away from the camera and using manual focus. If I could I would bracket the focus shots - the only awkward part was holding Indy in one hand, camera in the other, then needing a third hand to adjust focus! Doing that gave me the luxury of later picking the best shot!

Indy visits Chinatown in Oakland. Not as big as San Francisco, but there nonetheless.
While it lacks the architecture of San Francisco's Chinatown, Oakland's does have the cachet of being a real working neighborhood unlike the tourist trap in SF. The menus in restaurants are typically still in Chinese, with Engrish translations. Doctors, lawyers, and whats its still cater to a predominantly Chinese crowds.
Hmm busy street. Have to wait.
Should have tired for an aerial shot that shows off the rad eight-way crosswalks!
Dang I think I'm lost. Did I take a wrong turn somewhere?
No, Sum Yee Pastry was right there! Did Wu Han not tell Indy of their fabulous steamed buns and obscenely large potstickers?! Cam Huong next store has, quite possibly, the best bahn mi in the East Bay; and at two-fifty, a price that has yet to be beat!
All in all, great pictures Nick! Keep up the great work...well, when Indy gets back.
