HEHE I got this message: "Man, that site is such an ass. Why do I have to await moderation in order to post pics? I've signed up with various forums before and I've always been able to post messages and pics right away."

So if he's whichin' (with a 'b' ;) ) about the Raven I guess the typhoon wasn't that bad!!!!:D

Sounds like Indy's been swept away...

Indiana Jones The Unexpected Journey.

Hope there are some extreme weather shots!

Guess they're just maintaining a certain standard. Like the doorman at a certain Shanghai club during the Japanese bombing, who told a man he couldn't come in for shelter because he wasn't a member.

Hope there are some extreme weather shots!

You mean shots such as Indy's soaking wet foot glimpsed in the top right hand corner of the picture as he makes his way back to America on the cheapest ticket possible?

Request for moderators - please authorize MDP78 - then we can get a visual update from Indy's Philippines excursion. Thanks!

While we are waiting for updates - a small request for info. I'm in the unique position of being able to take Indy to Elstree Studios next summer to see the man who invited Speilberg to make Raiders/Temple there - Gary Kurtz. Are you guys aware of any significant areas of the studio (other than the George Lucas Stages) where shots for the Indy trilogy were filmed ?

Wow, there's a story behind that statement that needs telling!

Kurtz, the man who called Lucas out on going for spectacle over story, and was proved right with KOTCS. Be interesting to know his current feelings on the subjects he raised...

Well, in honour of my 40th next year I decided to treat myself and splash out on a ticket to a very limited event to be held at Elstree. An audience with Kurtz limited to less than 100 people, a private tour of the studios (which is the real draw - these are working studios and closed to the public), an exhibition of Star Wars artefacts from the Kurtz collection...

Travelling Indy was more of an afterthought, but if there are questions you want asking please let me know...

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! :whip:

Nick, I decided to bring the S100 with me instead since I couldn't achieve the same results with my other point and shoot and I thought it would be a wasted opportunity if the pics were just so-so.

More pics are on the way and they're "baking in the oven" as we speak. ;)

Indy heads off to Sun Cruises (http://wikimapia.org/10633564/Sun-Cruises-Reservations-Office) right next to the PICC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_International_Convention_Center) to get a boat ride ticket to Corregidor Island (http://corregidorisland.com/).

Waiting in line to get his ticket:

My apologies on behalf of the board upkeep, but the forum software's a bit outdated, which means our spambot filters aren't exactly up to speed either. We either resort to manual member screening or run around the tables squatting Cialis ads popping up all over the place. Your call.

Finn, I'm using a Canon S100 (http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/powershot_g_series/powershot_s100) set with aperture priority. I highly recommend it if you want a high end point and shoot camera. Word on the street is that it's a common back up camera for professional shutterbugs and it definitely deserves that reputation.

As for my message to Nick, I wasn't really expecting him to post that. ;-) My apologies if that was offensive, but I tend to say a few colorful words here and there when I get frustrated.

EDIT: Added link to Canon's website.

Trivia (http://www.thecircumference.org/crisologo-street): "Stories have been told which suggest that the city of Vigan was spared destruction out of love. During the later part of the Second World War, retreating Japanese troops would blaze any town before leaving so that American forces could not make use of them. However, one Japanese general who lived and married a local girl in Vigan, made a pact with the parish priest to spare the city in exchange that the priest would take care of his family. The Japanese general may not have survived the war, but his undying love for his family saved a very lovely town and became one of Philippine’s most famous destinations."

Stoo, thanks for all the compliments. I have to admit I was under a lot of pressure to produce decent pictures after seeing what had been posted on this thread. Though I thought this would also be a good opportunity to get Indy on the other side of the globe, and also push my photography and photo editing skills. I'm very happy with the results and I think they turned out better than I had expected. :whip:

I also got a lot of encouragement and support from my company, most of whom you'll see as recurring extras in some pics. I had an extra hand sometimes holding my camera on the other side so I can stabilize it while my other hand held Indy. ;-) They're also lurking on these boards, waiting for me to post the rest of the pics we took wherever we went.

Believe it or not, inspite of us getting only about 5-15 minutes of taking pics, walking around and what have you in Corregidor, I still managed to take personal photos. There were always at least 2 people who brought cameras within our group, me included, so there was/were always designated folks to take personal pics. It was truly fun to shoot Indy in these locations and given another chance, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I'm posting a few more sets in the next few days. Some of these may not be as visually and/or technically impressive, but they complete Indy's journey in the Philippines. I'm sure you've noticed that I employed a flowing story to the pictures.

After that, if you guys aren't tired of me posting pics yet ;-), you'll see some pics that didn't make the cut, and just some things that I took for kicks and giggles.

... Indy learns that the house (http://www.vigan.ph/father_burgos_museum.html) of Fr. Jose Burgos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Burgos), a Filipino secular priest accused of mutiny by the Spanish colonial authorities in the Philippines in the 19th century and was summarily executed in Manila along with two other clergymen, is just walking distance from his hotel. The fact that it is now a museum has piqued the interest of our favorite archaeologist, so he ventures out to the museum early in the morning:

MDP78,

I couldn't possibly be more blown away by the staggering, extraordinary quality of the images you have posted.

What an incredible trip you (and Indy) must have had. The locales are stunning - wish I could have been there.

And the quality of the pictures themselves is beyond impressive. I am endlessly amused by the forced-perspective shots of Indy "sitting" or "posing" with other people and whatnot. You truly have a very talented eye.

Your participation in this project has been nothing short of epic. I think you have raised the bar on so many levels.

Thank you so much for your amazing work! Following these pictures - even from my laptop - has been an adventure in and of itself.

Bravo!

Personally, it was pleasing to see that you used the luggage in many of the shots and followed suit by including a narrative. I was the 1st one to have the figure and had a lot of fun doing forced perspective shots so I'm glad you also contined that tradition as well (even if you faked some of them)!;)

@Lance Quazar : thank you for all your kind words. TI and I had an incredible trip, indeed! I didn't want to disappoint any of our fellow Raveners as this was not an established route for Indy, and I'm thankful to all of you guys for allowing TI to go with me to the Philippines. Hopefully the next folks in line will continue the tradition of taking fun and unique pictures, if not with forced-perspective shots.

@NickTurner : Plane was bumpy at the time and with 2 hours to go before touchdown, it was then or never! :) Believe it or not, of the several pics I took this was the best that came out.

@Stoo : NickTurner and I have known each other for almost 6 years. Been to his house several times and he's never complained of missing collectibles (so far :D ). I'm actually meeting him at the local pub tonight so I can hand TI back to him.

As far as the "faked" pictures go, I'd say they were only partially faked. I did maintain a certain level of integrity with the pictures, meaning Indy was where he is in the pics! It would defeat the whole purpose of the exercise to copy and paste a pic of him in any background, as I or anyone on the boards can just copy and paste a pic of TI on any place/backdrop he hasn't really been to. I'm sure our fellow Raveners would rather see the pics I've posted above than these: ;)

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Original%20Resized%20Pics/IMG_0874.jpg

As you can see, my hand would've been a big eyesore if I kept the original pictures. Part of my goal was to push my photography and photo editing skills and some of these shots wouldn't have been possible if we stuck to the good ol' "Take-a-pic-of-Indy-and-crop-his-feet-so-no-one-can-see-your-hand" formula. At least they don't look as incredible as the infamous "nuked the fridge" scene on KOTCS! :p

WRT to visiting sites of the 1899-1902 Philippine-American War, no we didn't get to go to any of them. The closest is a carved mural in Corregidor, which happened to be a background in one of the TI pics that didn't make it past the cutting room. I'll be posting those soon.

Its all good to know, and great to see a different approach.

I would have liked to taken pictures that were completely in focus, but I didn't have the time or equipment. So a cell phone pic from a NYC Subway would have to do!

Nice to see the "making of" pics and I certainly wouldn't mind a few inspired "CGI" shots, (with a clear disclaimer!).

Must admit I did a little 'wow-look-at-that-how did-he-do-it' at the balcony pic! Good to know he was really there, as-it-were.

BTW, part of the fun of running around with Indy is the 'guerrilla shots' - so any comments made on the fuzzies should be taken as humor, not criticism. We all have shots that are not perfect but can never be repeated!

Look forward to the remaining pics, getting TI back for round 2, and talking of rounds, some beer!! Cheers!

So, first you take a pic of a location with him in there, and then another without - and later crop 'em together. Clever.

Some people would still call it cheating, I guess. I personally am calling it "thinking outside the box".

Yes sir, you got it right! Not as easy as it sounds though especially I wasn't carrying a tripod around (hence some of the fuzzy pics). Even though I thought I didn't move the camera when I took Indy down I did. I had to copy sections of the pics without Indy piece by piece and massage them in PS via free transform to make them conform to the pic with Indy. I'd be happy to provide the PSD file to anyone interested.

Some people would still call it cheating, I guess. I personally am calling it "thinking outside the box".

Man, you can read me like a book! :D I was about to say that in order to take more interesting pictures you have to think outside the box. Yes, it can also be classified cheating but not to the point where it makes the concept of getting TI around the globe totally pointless. :)

P.S. Thanks for your reply about the Philippine-American War. Would like to see that mural.
So, first you take a pic of a location with him in there, and then another without - and later crop 'em together. Clever.

Some people would still call it cheating, I guess. I personally am calling it "thinking outside the box".It's surprising that anyone would need to see the 'behind-the-scenes' photos to figure out how they were done. It's a standard procedure and was obvious to me, straight off the bat.

As a photo-retoucher by profession, doing the same thing crossed my mind when I had Indy but eventually decided against it. (That said, one of my photos does have a slight modification but it's impossible to spot.;))
BTW, part of the fun of running around with Indy is the 'guerrilla shots' - so any comments made on the fuzzies should be taken as humor, not criticism. Ok folks, I'm getting to the last leg (well, almost) of Indy pictures courtesy of yours truly. This time I'd like to show some of the pics that didn't make it past the cutting room. As some of you may have already experienced, our photos don't always turn out as well as we'd like to. I do have a few of those types of pictures in this collection, but some of them are also here because they didn't seem to fit the story I wanted for Traveling Indy, even though the photos themselves look nice. So without further ado, I present to you Traveling Indy's Philippine Excursion "Extended/Director's Cut" :

First off, we have Indy in Corregidor Island entering a steel door at one of the ruins:

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Corregidor_Steeldoor.jpg

Here's Indy going upstairs. I was initially going to use this in the main presentation since there's no "cheating" required in this photo but I thought I already had way too many pictures of Indy's back so I decided to use the one where you see his right side. This staircase is actually a "mirror" of what you saw earlier, so there are two ways to get up this structure.

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Corregidor_Stairs.jpg

Here's a pic of Indy by one of the battery guns. I tried a few times to take this picture right but inspite of multiple manual adjustments to my camera's aperture, it always seemed to focus on either Indy or the background. I decided it was best to just leave it out of the set:

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Corregidor_BatteryGun.jpg

Here's something that I should've included but totally forgot. :o Indy with a full view of the lighthouse. He is rather fuzzy in the pic, but it would've given context as to where he is in the main presentation pic.

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Corregidor_Lighthouse.jpg

This one's for Stoo! Here's the Philippine-American War carved mural I mentioned a few posts back. I know some of the text can't be read but it doesn't look natural for Indy to look from the side of the picture as for anyone else, so I put him somewhat in the middle of the pic at the expense of blocking the writing on the base.

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Corregidor_CarvedMural.jpg

Here's Indy at Banaoang River. This is just a different view from the one I posted in the main presentation.

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Banaoang_Riverview.jpg

At the river bank, again just a different view. I'm not sure if it's visible in the pic but there's a zipline under construction that would cross the river from one side to the other. Would've been fun to have some Indy on a zipline pics. :)

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Banaoang_Riverbank.jpg

Here's Indy viewing an old, Spanish style bell tower. Me and my company went there on Christmas Day so it was closed. My sister-in-law told me you can pretty much view the whole city of Vigan at the top. Would've been nice to get Indy's pic up there but time was not on our side.

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Philippine%20Excursion%20Extended%20Cut/Indy_Vigan_Belltower.jpg

Here's another one for Stoo: Indy by the old phone. This pic would've been another victim of photo editing had I chosen it. I took the other pic instead because of the "Hands off, please" sign. :D

And lastly, here's a pic of Indy boiling water in a kettle! I decided not to crop my hand off the pic so you can see that he's "using" an old school wood burner. I couldn't think of a way to figure this into Indy's story so I decided to leave it out even though I really wanted to include it. Perhaps, Indy did a little bit of an "immersion" into the way of living of the locals?

Hope you guys like the pics. I'll be posting some fun with TI pics soon, and those should be the final pics from me. :)

It's surprising that anyone would need to see the 'behind-the-scenes' photos to figure out how they were done. It's a standard procedure and was obvious to me, straight off the bat. Which begs a question. Why didn't YOU utilize it? It obviously appears you didn't (and even if you did, not nearly as masterfully as MDP).

Besides, obvious or not, the man was due some compliments for it, weren't he now?

<small>And yeah, I can admit it. While I can tinker the hell out of any box with circuitry in it, inside and outside, I'm pretty much a crude amateur what comes to the art of capturing imagery.</small>

Ok guys, it's time: time to break out of the usual (and "serious") stuff (i.e. perspective shots) so I took these fun pics of Indy just for the heck of it.

So here's Traveling Indy, with all his accumulated accessories so far:

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_Accessories.jpg

As he traveled with me in the Philippines, it was just natural for him to pick some stuff up along the way. My sister-in-law's youngest brother, who also happens to be a photography enthusiast, was amazed at all the photos posted thus far here on the Raven before I even started posting mine. He decided to give me something for the holidays, which also happens to be for Indy.

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_XmasGift.jpg

The text in parenthesis literally translates to, "Indy needs this!" When I peeked in the paper bag, my natural reaction was to LOL! This (err, she) was in the bag (with an accompanying stand):

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_BikiniGirl_01.jpg

As you can see, he's a rather silly person. Ya, let's get Indy a female companion in the Philippines! :D

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_BikiniGirl_02.jpg

There were more things he picked up on the way. In Vigan, he got himself 2 things. One is a "golden" fridge magnet of a kalesa (local horse carriage) made of resin.

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_Kalesa_FridgeMagnet.jpg

The other is a knife that has a matching wooden sheath. This is something I want Indy to bring along with him in his future adventures, as it fits him better than the fridge magnet. I'm not sure how safe it is though, as it could get confiscated by the likes of TSA (http://www.tsa.gov/) or whatever the equivalent agency is in other countries. I hope someone on the Raven who's an expert on the matter, or who works in a similar agency can weigh in on this. I'm leaning towards not letting the knife go. :(

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_Knife.jpg

Here are some tickets (ferry boat to Corregidor Island and Malinta Tunnel light show) that I'm bundling with his passport:

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_Tickets_Passport.jpg

I also thought it would be a good idea to scan and print out the section of my passport that was stamped and signed by Philippine immigration officers, both when I entered and left the country. I also wrote what would have been Indy's special message to the Filipino people:

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_Passport.jpg

Here's TI tipping his hat off to HBRI (HorseBack Riding Indy :D )

A little pictorial with some of my 4 inch figs: Can you identify all of them? :)

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_With_Friends.jpg

Oh, did you ever wonder what happened to Indy after he left the SFO International Airport?

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_Pub_01.jpg

He went back to the pub where we met and while waiting for the tank man, he ran into some deranged fan while having his Steel Stout and fish 'n chips. LOOOLL!!!! Or, is that the tank man? :D

Indy sitting on a fedora

http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l636/MDP_78/Traveling%20Indy%20Fun%20Pics%20with%20MDP78/Indy_Pub_03.jpg

Again, I'd like to thank the members of the Raven for making Indy's 3 week detour in the Philippines possible.

Have been holding off commenting until this leg of Indy's journey was complete, but gotta say...awesome job MDP78! Really great and creative photos! Makes me wish I could get a do-over, though I really don't have much desire to go back to Afghanistan any time soon.

I could possibly be deploying again this summer, hopefully somewhere else this time, so who knows...

Which begs a question. Why didn't YOU utilize it? It obviously appears you didn't (and even if you did, not nearly as masterfully as MDP).PURITY was the reason for not modifying any of my photos (except one*). I wanted all the shots to be 'in-camera' in order to avoid any possible misconceptions. As far as "masterfully" is concerned: Please note that I'm certified by Adobe as a Photoshop professional and have been working with it, daily, since 1992. That's 20 years, dude...;)

*My thumb was taken out of 1 photo.
Besides, obvious or not, the man was due some compliments for it, weren't he now?Of course, MDP deserves compliments for his excellent & enthusiastic job (especially for someone who wasn't a Ravenhead)! Nick made a great pick with MDP78.
No worries, Stoo. I have to admit that when I saw the word "faked" I thought I'd to clear a few things up before anyone gets the wrong idea. ;)Instead of using the word, "faked", I should have written, "doctored"!:o

Thanks a lot for posting the photo with the mural. Knowing that you were in Manila, I thought you must have seen something. Much appreciated!:hat: Love the extra telephone shot, too! The photo of 'The Tank Man' was also nice to see because it's cool if each host of Mini-Indy includes a picture of themselves. @Billy Ray, thanks for the compliments. I'm sure a do-over can be arranged. Remember, Indy wasn't really scheduled to go to the Philippines. :)

@Stoo, I'm not aware of any Philippine-American war sites or memorials. I'm thinking areas wherever battles took place have been replaced by modern infrastructure decades ago, so there's really nothing to see unlike in Corregidor Island.

@Finn, if I was still in Manila, I'd grab one bikini babe for ya and send it your way at my cost. Of course, you would've had to provide her clothing more suited to Finnish weather. ;)

Also, nice pic you took there, although I'm already freezing just by looking at it. And I'm already complaining about the Bay Area weather in winter time (goes down to around 28F)!

@Stoo, I'm not aware of any Philippine-American war sites or memorials. I'm thinking areas wherever battles took place have been replaced by modern infrastructure decades ago, so there's really nothing to see unlike in Corregidor Island. That's unfortunate, MDP. The Battle of Manila was the biggest of that war and since you were in Manila, you might have been walking over spots and not even known.

With all the trinkets Indy is picking up, the package must be getting heavier so it would be a bit unfair to those folks down the line who would have to pay more postage for any unecessary, extra weight. (But that's just my opinion.)

Again, your participation, enthusiasm, and quality shots (& photo-editing;)) have all been splendid additions to Inky's project. Thank you very much and, if you're a Indiana Jones fan, stick around!:hat:

For your information, it wasn't even cold out there at the moment that one was taken, perhaps -5 C (ca. 20 F). Still pretty mild, at least for our standards.

So I didn't exactly feel it either or have felt ever since. It's currently around -15 C (5 F) outside, yet I'm comfortably sitting in my undies here in nice +20 C (70 F) indoor temperature. Compared to other places where they're apparently building houses out of cardboard or something, our builders have mastered this little thing called "insulation" ages ago.

Have I really been away that long ?

I'm glad to see that Indy's travels have been progressing without my active involvement - the project had certainly grown beyond the humble beginnings in envisaged.

MDP78 - your contribution has been very entertaining - certainly equal to previous entries in Indy's travel journal. It's also provoked some debate as to what is acceptable in terms of image manipulation, which I think is healthy. Here's my perspective - I only have one rule for this project and that's if you're going to take a picture Indy has to have physically been in the location. As such, I have no issues with your post production work - in fact I welcome another technique in telling the Travelling Indy story. People have taken a number of different approaches so far - Stoo and Billy Ray have used straight reportage - Indy in frame, real locations, minimal futzing (if any). Lance and Rocket did some great work putting a narrative together using the comic book style. Pale Horse aged his submissions to great effect. I attempted to create an environment for my shots which was correctly scaled to the figure. Others have put their own unique slants on it. In short, it's a broad church and anything goes !

However, sometimes I do feel the need to lay down the law - so I'm going to insist that the knife be removed from the package. No disrespect intended to you MDP78, but I don't want to risk anything that could see Indy being seized by customs. Additionaly I'm also aware that he's starting to trail a lot of baggage - so if we can restrict journal additions to notes, paper items, matchbooks, coasters etc. in future, I'd appreciate it.

Ok all - as you were and carry on ! Look forward to seeing what you have planned Nick !

Meanwhile I have a little something different planned ( :D ) and took some pictures this last weekend. Hopefully I can finish my planned shoot this coming weekend. Sorry I can't post any yet as it forms a - sort of - narrative! I used up most of my vacation while MDP78 was in the Philippines, so I'm afraid it's wait till the weekends mostly...:(

Meanwhile I'll hand the knife - even small as it is - back to MDP78 and Indy will have to be content with a fridge magnet buggy!

@inky_skin, it was my pleasure to have taken part in this project. I had as much fun as the other folks who previously had TI, if not more so, hence the multitude of pictures I took. Again, I thank you and fellow Raveners alike for making all this possible. I'm officially hooked and will continue to visit the Raven to follow Traveling Indy's adventures around the globe.

I also take no offense to having the knife removed from Indy's growing list of items as that was my initial gut feeling anyway. I understand that we don't want to draw any unwanted attention from local authorities/customs, although at the same time I have to admit it is unfortunate as it is such a cool looking knife that suits Indy and is also lightweight at 15 grams.

Anyway, hopefully everyone enjoyed my presentation of Traveling Indy and given the chance for another round in the future, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Looking forward to other Raveners' pictures.

Cheers! :whip:

Well now, what have we here? In studying primitive tribes, I have come across all manner of methods used to deliver psychoactive compounds to the human brain. If I am not mistaken, these are delivery mechanisms for THC, the active ingredient in cannabis sativa. Aka, bongs!

Aha! Here we have a living plant! Tribes may be trying to talk to God - though Dr. Rene Belloq has another theory in THAT regard! - Here in California, Cannabis is legal when used for medicinal purposes. This is an exhibition of a live medicinal marijuana plant.

Antioch bridge and the ubiquitous power lines in the background. I was reliably informed that the fish were not hungry that day, but was sure to tread softly on those wooden boards.

The period pieces and the library perspective...very cool. Did you have to declair Indy before you went into the "Toy Section"?

Nah. He wasn't 'vintage enough'! He was a plastic man in a world of metal toys!

They were really cool about letting me take pics. Gave me no hassles over posing Indy with the toys, and I shared one of the 'Raven' cards I made up so maybe they'll check the pictures. Kinda hard getting good shots indoors so there's a bunch of crappy ones not worth sharing  But also got the ones you see

Meanwhile I had 2 12x18" prints made up for Oaksterdam as requested. Maybe they'll hang one in the museum - wouldn't that be cool? I must put a couple more Raven cards in with them...

In any case, I'd love to participate in this, eventually haha. Would have been great if I'd known a month or two ago. I just went on a cruise to Cozumel!

I know nobody misses my opinion, but... it IS a little cheesy. But in a fun way. If I have to have a real complaint though, it would be that Indy looks a wee bit out of character here. But I suppose we can let that pass, given the context.

Hope this doesn't lead to any serious one-upping contests though. You guys aren't obviously worried of setting bar too high - the next recipient who has no skillz for more than to do that "hold 'im with your fingers in-frame" thing might feel a little inadequate, the flashiness of the surrounding locale notwithstanding.

After all, it's obviously not the grandness of it, but how you use it.

It's been awhile since I came to this board, and it's nice to see Nick's finally posted some pics from when we went to Oaksterdam, as well as a few of the comic strips he said he was planning to do.

All in all I think it's good fun. I personally like what he's posted thus far, and actually advocate breaking out of the mold from time to time, for monotony is the major cause of boredom. The comic strips are a breath of fresh air from the standard P&S Indy in a background IMO. I'm excited to see the rest of it and from what I've been told, there's a major surprise at the end. I'm just not allowed to talk about it. ;)

Have Indy do a c.1959 exosphere-to-earth, parachute jump! He could get caught on a Commie rocket
and forced to make a high-altitude bail out. (This scene would out-fridge The Fridge.:p Well, not really,
since it's been done but it certainly would be in the same vein.)

The idea of a 'comic' came about because of:

1) How do you justify Indy driving around in a Republic of Hatay tank?
2) Get some "paparazzi" shots of Indy with bikini babe
3) Give Indy an out-of-this-world adventure by launching him in a rocket!

Since I was doing #1, give a look at some other new vehicles from Hatay! Tired of the over-priced, under-detailed VW Kubelwagens from 21st Century and Minichamps, I finally procured a 1/16 model by Tamiya. Though slightly oversized the details were superb. (And maybe the figures would fit) The 'real' Kubel is barely seen in TLC, so I also made a 'fake' Kubel. Both vehicles 'star' in the comic, and Indy ended up driving the robust 'fake' VW since he would probably have broken the steering column of the Tamiya kit.

MDP78 had commented on how over dressed Indy looked when placed on a beach with lovely tropical breezes. So the idea came of a 'tourist Indy' figure wearing a loud Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts. In the end I had to keep the hat just to show it was Indy!

Well I am surprised #3 has not caused a stir. That really was Indy flying in that rocket! I did a test flight - everything OK.

Here's my 'test dummy'.

http://home.comcast.net/~IndianaJonesToys/TIndy_239.jpg

However, the flight was not without risk. The only rocket I had that would accommodate Indy was the Estes Silver Comet. This is a 'D' engine rocket but at least its height would be limited by its size - it's a pretty big model rocket that reaches maybe 500-600 feet altitude.

Indy with 'chute.

http://home.comcast.net/~IndianaJonesToys/TIndy_260.jpg

Packed for flight.....

http://home.comcast.net/~IndianaJonesToys/TIndy_261.jpg

When a model rocket reaches apogee, a little black powder charge fires to eject the nose cone and parachute. Any contents in the rocket tube must wear protection from this blast! Here is TIndy wrapped up like a mummy with flame-proof 'wading' paper.

http://home.comcast.net/~IndianaJonesToys/TIndy_262.jpg

And here is TIndy packed into the rocket tube!

http://home.comcast.net/~IndianaJonesToys/TIndy_263.jpg

Now comes the actual flight - and here comes a walker with dog! Hold that flight. Don't want to have to circulate a dog-chewed Indy!

OK

All clear!

Launch! Set up camera... GO

I have the opportunity to visit the sound stages at Elstree on May 5th and meet some of the production staff associated with both Star Wars and Raiders. Those last couple of shots illustrate everything I wanted this project to be - a means of bringing the Raven community together offline. Bravo.

Love the line-up of Travelling Indy and his dopplegangers. The original is looking a bit worn around the edges - but that's some real life weathering that speaks of the distance he's clocking up. Hey - it's not the age, it's the mileage - right ?

And who'd have thought that the Berlin Flughafen location from Last Crusade was in the US? That architecture just screamed "Europe" to me. How wrong can a guy be!

Awesome job, Nick. Love your duplicate Indy clones, too! (With those 3 together, I can imagine a 'See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil' scenario!)
The little guy and I did go for a walk around my part of the city yesterday, and while I'm not ready to share everything, I thought Stoo would appreciate this one:

Quick, name two continuity errors!I'll have a crack at that:

1) The cable car switches from the left-side track to the right.

2) The cable car that is passing Indy is the Powell & Hyde line and the one he whips onto is the Powell & Mason line. The clue is the yellow sign on the back of the Powell & Mason car (which is the line we rode on our visit.)

Anyway, Tash, your photos are STUNNING. They are so crisp & clear! Love the shots, the narrative, etc. Way to go!:hat:

Happy Birthday, by the way!:D

#2 is spot on. #1 is close enough - the earlier shot is on a one-way street, whereas the later shot with the actual whip (I meant to get a close-up of it wrapped around the rear break) is on a two-way street.

Um, practically everything. Walk a block in any direction in SF and you'll be somewhere new and amazing.

Can you be more specific about where you'll be staying, how long you have to look around, and what some of your interests are? Walking, art, entertainment, scenery, people watching, shopping, food, ...?

Feel free to ping me with any specific questions, via PM!

How does one start a book ? I think there is some decent content there - maybe some choice shots with a sidebar on the forum member - perhaps a preface about the purpose of the project. Ideas ?

No reason why not buddy - it's an ongoing project. Are we talking literal of figurative underground ?

Literally. :hat: Part of Seattle is built on top of old Seattle and they do tours. http://www.undergroundtour.com/

The Seattle Underground is a network of underground passageways and basements in downtown Seattle, Washington, United States that was ground level at the city's origin in the mid-19th century. After the streets were elevated these spaces fell into disuse, but have become a tourist attraction in recent decades.

Seattle's first buildings were wooden. On June 6, 1889 at 2:39 in the afternoon,[1] a cabinetmaker accidentally overturned and ignited a glue pot. An attempt to extinguish it with water spread the burning grease-based glue. The fire chief was out of town, and although the volunteer fire department responded they made the mistake of trying to use too many hoses at once. They never recovered from the subsequent drop in water pressure, and the Great Seattle Fire destroyed 31 blocks.[2]

While a destructive fire was not unusual for the time, the response of the city leaders was. Instead of rebuilding the city as it was before, they made two strategic decisions: that all new buildings must be of stone or brick, insurance against a similar disaster in the future; and to regrade the streets one to two stories higher than the original street grade. Pioneer Square had originally been built mostly on filled-in tidelands and, as a consequence, it often flooded. The new street level also assisted in ensuring that gravity-assisted flush toilets that funnelled into Elliott Bay did not back up at high tide.

For the regrade, the streets were lined with concrete walls that formed narrow alleyways between the walls and the buildings on both sides of the street, with a wide "alley" where the street was. The naturally steep hillsides were used, and through a series of sluices material was washed into the wide "alleys", raising the streets to the desired new level, generally 12 feet higher than before, in some places nearly 30 feet.

At first pedestrians climbed ladders to go between street level and the sidewalks in front of the building entrances. Brick archways, as seen in the image to the left, were constructed next to the road surface, above the submerged sidewalks. Skylights with small panes of clear glass (which later became amethyst-colored because of manganese in the glass) were installed, creating the area now called the Seattle Underground.

When they reconstructed their buildings, merchants and landlords knew that the ground floor would eventually be underground and the next floor up would be the new ground floor, so there is very little decoration on the doors and windows of the original ground floor, but extensive decoration on the new ground floor.

Once the new sidewalks were complete, building owners moved their businesses to the new ground floor, although merchants carried on business in the lowest floors of buildings that survived the fire, and pedestrians continued to use the underground sidewalks lit by the glass cubes (still seen on some streets) embedded in the grade-level sidewalk above.

In 1907 the city condemned the Underground for fear of bubonic plague, two years before the 1909 World Fair in Seattle (Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition). The basements were left to deteriorate or were used as storage. Some became illegal flophouses for the homeless, gambling halls, speakeasies, and opium dens.

Only a small portion of the Seattle Underground has been restored and made safe and accessible to the public on guided tours.

It will be a little while before I can participate but I will want in. Washington has a bunch of things for Indy to see.

As for a possible book, the red-lined map should defitintely be used with each leg added on the corresponding host's pages. One other possibility could be to include more detailed maps of the actual cities with the precise location points showing where the individual photos were taken.

I've worked on a book and a few catalogues before so I'd be totally into helping make this happen.:)

I have been following in the footsteps of Indy these past couple days, with stops at Chinatown, the submarine (but I actually went inside!) and Alcatraz (again, going all the way to the island!)

Hope tomorrow to get to Fort Mason before leaving in the late afternoon.

Your have been gorgeous, amusing and highly entertaining!

Though, I can't help but think Indy should swing by Bourbon and Branch to re-live the swinging Prohibition days of his youth.

THE END

Both this and the previous chapter were primarily shot at the Sutro Baths (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutro_Baths) - ruins from a Victorian-era bathing house that burned to the ground in the 1960s and are now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. An ancient civilization... from a certain point of view.

Sorry if that ending was a bit abrupt, but Indy needed to hit the road. After a first-class flight he's back in the UK with Inky already, ready for his next adventure. Hopefully he'll return to SF soon! I'll share some photos that didn't make the cut for the narrative over the next day or two.

Tash - thank you for adding another stunning chapter to Indy's adventure. Couple of stand-out points I'd like to draw particular attention to...firstly your pin-sharp visuals which really capture the beauty of your local area. Secondly your post-production skills - I'm particularly enamoured with the way in which you edited your shots to make them appear in the appropriate widescreen ratio - effectively capturing that authentic movie feel. Finally, the great little narrative you put together (especially the tip of the fedora to Stoo in the last couple of frames). Did I miss the significance of "Chac-Mool" ? If it's a clever anagram or reference then the meaning has totally evaded me...

So, given your preference for Google tools to create your storyboard and Indy's visit to their HQ is there a professional connection ?

I've got a little bit of time before my first outing with Travelling Indy so I was thinking of taking some pictures of the emphemera that accompanies him and allowing contributors to shed some light on its significance. Sound like something you'd all be interested in ?

However, to whet your appetites...Travelling Indy will return in "Indiana Jones and the Fourth Wall"...

Thanks for noticing! Definitely intentional. Also handy in editing out the fingers holding Indy up.

Did I miss the significance of "Chac-Mool" ? If it's a clever anagram or reference then the meaning has totally evaded me...

It's the name of the food truck in the first Fort Mason picture (and associated SF restaurant), which serves Yucutan cuisine. I have an alternate shot with it in focus and Indy blurry. Their logo is a Mayan idol (same as the one towards the end, although that's a different restaurant in the background. The name has no other meaning, it just sounded cool.

So, given your preference for Google tools to create your storyboard and Indy's visit to their HQ is there a professional connection ?

Maybe. :) You may find clues in the materials Indy picked up with him. And yes, I think you should share photos of his treasures!

Sometimes the photography is more than a one-person job. NickTurner and MDP78 setting up a shot. I love the reverent way that MDP78 is holding the stick. Makes me think of the map room scene in Raiders. Also note the magnifying glass in Nick's hand to inspect the shot in detail:

Looking back along the Aquatic Park. The Streamline Moderne building on the right is a musem that's been under repair since we moved to SF in 2006. Another view of the Yoda fountain in the Presidio, at the Lucasfilm HQ. I went on a Sunday and there was a bit of a line to take photos. No-one batted an eye at Indy, of course. In person, you can see intriguing silhouettes of maquettes through the windows of the buildings; nothing worth photographing, alas.

The front panel of that cable car (or one decked out extremely similarly) is hanging up in the barn.

Interesting note about that picture - that car is clearly marked as a Powell-Hyde (the brown "Powell & Market / Hyde & Beach" sign) and is a single-ended Powell-line car, but it's on the California tracks, just up the hill from Powell and California - you can see another Powell line car behind it crossing the intersection.

The museum was a real education in how tough it is to photograph Indy in a low-light location. Seriously, people like Nick Turner made taking beautifully composed shots look easy - but it really isn't ! Macro shots of Indy were blurred without a flash, and with a flash you couldn't capture any backgroud detail. Due to the challenging conditions, the crowds and my limited schedule, this was about the only publishable shot I got off here...

Okay, so the town of Elstree itself is peppered with Indy references...

Sneaky peak around the back of Elstree Studios into one of the f/x shops. Say, that fella looks familiar...

But did I manage to get any shots of Travelling Indy in the studio itself ? Tune in this weekend to find out...

Cool photo in front of the British Museum. Such a natural location for Indy and it ties in so nicely with the mention in "Crystal Skull".

This is a great idea/thread. I'm just coming into it, so I just read the first few posts, and skipped to the last couple posts. Is this thing finished, is there a link with all the pics? (I'll try to go back and read through it). If it's not done, sign me up for Seal Beach CA, I can take a picture of him near the beach, or an In-N-Out or some local landmark, oh maybe Disneyland if he hasn't been there already. The pictures of Esltree studios are great, but shouldn't the pictures of Indy's trip include Indy somewhere? If it hasn't been done already I can make a website dedicated to his adventure, I would love to see a big map, and then see all the pics of the doll in various locations. Fun, stuff. Thanks @inky_skin for a great idea!

Hi, Russ. In my opinion, this is THE GREATEST THREAD in the whole history of The Raven, due to Inky's creativity & generosity and the full-blooded enthusiasm of everyone involved.

The project isn't over yet because, more than 2 years after it began, Mini-Indy still hasn't circumnavigated the globe (he keeps zig-zagging across the Atlantic). The mighty Pale Horse took the figure to Disneyland already, however, Indy is due to return to Californye-yay. Ultimately, it's up to Inky to decide whether or not to include new hosts/chaperones but he's a nice fellow so you may be in luck.

If you're willing to create a dedicated website, I say, "Go for it!". We've discussed perhaps making a book but I think a website would be welcome. Inky made a map but it's rather small and hasn't been updated in a very, long time.

This thread is filled to the brim with wonderful stuff so check out the entire thing...and don't skip a single post!:whip:

It's not a doll, it's an ACTION FIGURE  :p

And I second Stoo's statement. It is the greatest thread, and it was the thread that lead me to The Raven over a year ago, making me a regular lurking reader - and now an active member. Inky, I bow to you :hat:

Firstly, a huge apology - I know I've been slack in curating this thread but work has simply kept me maxed out for the past few weeks.

russds - Welcome. If you want to host Indy I'll add you to the list, but please be aware that you'll be some way down the batting order. You are correct that my initial Elstree pics don't contain Indy - but I wanted to include all of the Indy-related stuff that I saw as a "trailer" of sorts (see below for the main feature). I've been considering a website to pull all the pics together (with an interactive mapping element) so I may contact you via PM for some consultation.

Archaeos - Glad to know that this thread pulled you in. My wife often refers to my action figures as "dolls" - I prefer "miniature human analogues". Any chance you'd like to hang out with Indy before he leaves these shores ?

So, as I alluded to earlier, taking pictures at Elstree was somewhat tricky - although not for the reasons I first thought. We had been told that it was a working studio ("Millionaire" and "The Voice" were filming there that evening) and therefore had to sign a disclaimer that we wouldn't take pictures on the lot. It actually transpired that half of Stage 7 was occupied by guests (who you had to pay to photograph) and the other half by the Kurtz-Joiner Archive (who are writing a book about their artefacts and therefore wanted to preserve "exclusivity"). So - security were keen to eject anyone who broke the rules.

However...

The exterior of Stage 7. I gather they filmed the "campfire" scene from Temple on this soundstage. Anyone know whether other Indy segments were shot here ? I heard an anecdote later in the day that suggested Harrison and Pat Roach did their ToD fight scene on this stage.

Okay - so now things get "guerilla" style ;)

Indy finally makes it onto hallowed ground!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c273/inky_skin/IMAG0341.jpg

Hanging out on the stairs.

So - that's pretty much it for picures. Indiana Jones is still intrinsically linked to Elstree, featuring heavily on advertising for the studio complex.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c273/inky_skin/IMAG0339.jpg

I think we can rest assured that the legacy of the films won't be forgotten in the place that saw a number of their key scenes brought to life.

One final entry:

I was fortunate to be able to pose an Indy-related question to a panel comprising production staff who had worked on both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films (much to the ire of the Star Wars fans present!).

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c273/inky_skin/IMAG0338.jpg

l-r Michael Ford (Set Decorator), Ron Punter (Specialist Painter), Toby Lofthouse (Prop Supervisor)

I asked whether it was more challenging to dress a period film (Raiders) or a sci-fi picture (Star Wars). Their answer was Star Wars as everthing had to be fabricated. Apparently they just hit every costume hire store in a 50 mile radius of London for Raiders looking for uniforms. No real regard for accuracy, provided the era was roughly correct.

Incidentally, Ron Punter painted both the Ark and the Flying Wing (and the door that Jack Nicholson put an axe through in The Shining - there were 40+ of them made). He also mentioned watching Harrison and Pat Roach doing their Temple scenes together on set (Thugee / rock crusher?) and being approached by a young woman looking for Spielberg (transpired it was Barbara Streisand. Whether she was wearing her S&M outfit was unconfirmed ;)).

Hey @inky, great stuff. love the pics, and the fact you got to go to the Elstree studios, and even sit on the QA session. What a great adventure, and appropriate trip for mini-indy. Yes, please add me to the list, even though it might be a while, I would still enjoy being a part of it. With every trip the "action figure" :) grows more and more mature. :)

I have been thinking of website ideas actually, and even started looking at the google maps API, and thinking of ways of organizing the pics/trips/posts into a nicely designed website with map. I would love to see this. Feel free to PM me (i'm a web programmer so I dig this sort of stuff) for ideas or just talking about it. I think it would make a great site!

Sorry for late reply, I have been travelling myself (under the pretext of organising a fresh beer delivery at The Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München for all you Raveners after Finn came clean on some gastronomy deficiencies here (http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=22289), but I drank it all myself to reduce ballast near Mount Kailash - I mean, why is this haunt in Nepal and not in... Ojai CA, anyway :p   ).

WOw, okay, Inky, I genuinely am lost for words. I always thought that one day in the future, I would want to take part in this, but as a newbie here (at least in term of participation), I never thought of thi being anytome soon.

I also wouldn't want to be seen jumping queue here as many have diligently waited for a very long time to do their bit of adventuring with Travelling Indy. I don't want to rub someone badly by accepting...

Also, I am unsure for how long any member is allowed to hang on to Travelling Indy. If it's like 2 weeks or so, then I have to decline as I wouldn't be able to mount anything in such a short time. If I could hang on to him until end of July, or possibly even end of August, that's different.

What could I offer..? I will be in London throughout July, and could see if Indy could do some long-overdue research at the British Museum, the Petrie and some other places. After all, with so much mileage on his legs, he needs to catch up what academia has been up to in terms of objects and discoveries...

In August, I will be off to Turkey (if things hold and the Syrian border region ain't becoming a hotchpotch - the F-4 downing (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-18562210) near Hatay could become a catalyst). In Turkey, Travelling Indy could immedialtey apply some of his recently-learned knowledge in London and do some site visitations - although he won't be allowed to do some digging because he doesn't hold a Turkish government license...

Sorry, this post reads like rumblings and I realise the orhtograpy is bad but I am genuioely humbled and excited alike of this offer, and typing on a train aint' helping. So by any means, if you think what I could do is okay and of interenst and if no one here objects and if the times are right (sending INdy to Le Saboteur in CA, if I understand that correctly), I would love to give this opportunity a try (jeez, hopefully my camera will be able to do something good).

With travelling Indy soon bound to sunny California for attention of Le Saboteur - although maybe after a little prolonged stay in Europe with me -, I think it should be okay to doublepost Attila's heads-up (http://raven.theraider.net/showpost.php?p=531748&postcount=272) that the National Geographic Adventure of Archaeology Exhibition (discussed here (http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?t=18890)) currently at CAC in Valencia (http://www.cac.es/museo/exposiciones/ficha/?contentId=118829) until 16 September 2012, will also move on to California!

I'm surprised this (http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2012/07/06/indiana-jones-leaps-to-blu-ray-snakes-slither-to-comic-con-booth/) hasn't come up here, especially as it's been mentioned on TheRaider.net:

And for Los Angeles-based Indy fans, the “Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology” exhibit is coming to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana on Oct. 12, on the heels of the Blu-ray release in September. The exhibit features props from the movies, including the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail, as well as genuine archaeological artifacts, many of which served as inspiration for the film.

Great news (http://raven.theraider.net/showpost.php?p=531751&postcount=273), as this could raises the possibility of Travelling Indy visiting "his" Travelling Exhibition  .

You make a great point Archaeos - anyone up for it (although I've promised Le Sab that Indy will be back in his possession by October at the latest) ?

Well, I've had a great time with Indy - both taking him on a couple of excursions and also reading his diaries and examining the collected ephemera - but it's time for him to move on.

I did manage to make a wet - and ultimately disappointing - detour to Clouds Hill (home of T E Lawrence) last week. Unfortunately, it turns out the house is shut for part of the week so I was only able to grab the following shots:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c273/inky_skin/IMAG0415.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c273/inky_skin/IMAG0413.jpg

The overall "Travelling Indy" package now weighs almost a kilo, so I'm making an executive decision to only forward on Indy and his diaries. The rest I'm going to retain in order to scan / photograph and post in this thread. I hope you are all ok with this (reduces postage costs as well).

As far as a website is concerned, I'm very keen to take russds and Le Sab up on their offer to develop something. I think it's more appropriate than the book idea at this moment as we can keep adding new content - committing his travels to paper has a certain finality to it that would be better explored once Indy's travels are over. Chaps - I'll be in touch.

You've got a message, Inky.
Already have some plans fermenting in my head on what's possible.

For sure is: I will try my best to weave a bit further the Indy-in-Britain narrative that you started, and have him return to London from having met up with T.E. Lawrence (I loved that - what a great idea that was, Inky  ), catch up on the scholar side of his life at some museums, and maybe let him walk past some other landmarks or places — any requests from Raveners are welcome... if you want to see Indy somewere, post it here... okay, except me being arrested by the Met for attempting to break into Room 101, okay ;) )

If nothing geopolitically serious happens, Indy will then be off to Turkey for some fieldwork. Let's see if there's some adventure he is catapulted into...

First week of September, I will be back in London, and then post Indy with courier to Le Sab in California where he should arrive 3rd week of September latest. And then, off to Santa Ana or Rest of America... the adventure continues...

Good call on the reduced-package thing (1kg... wow...), and of course the website. I think that's a much better idea for now than a book, although at the end of Indy's travel, an edited/curated photobook would be cool. But the adventure is just beginning, anyhow, as I can see Indy travelling in 2 years + time with no end in sight...

5) Imperial War Museum!
6) WW1 Cenotaph in Whitehall.
7) Herbert Johnson store near Piccadilly.
8) With the wax figure of Indy at Madame Tussaud's.

Thanks so much for the inspiration and ideas.

Much to my surprise, the requests are all feasable, even though LeSab's are a little less probable, especially when they located outside the London universe of the M25. But I can compensate any that I can't fulfill with equally interesting stuff (me thinks).

Would you like Herbert Johnson's at 54 St James's Street or at 162 Piccadilly  ?

Watching The Who perform at the closing ceremony of the Olympics! Live in person or televised - doesn't matter - just do it "anyway, anyhow, anywhere"!

Now THAT I can't do, simply because I will have "wheels-up" to Turkey at almost exactly the moment when The Who is wheeled out on stage. But maybe... there is... another... opt... ion... Let me make this up as I along :)
