View Full Version : The Fedora Award

I was reviewing some of the old posts about "real Indiana Jones'" and I think that we have enough names to start a poll. But I think we should add more. Would theraider.net be willing to start a poll and award "The Fedora Award" to the "Jones" with the most votes? I would also love to see this award become an annual thing. PS, If the award should go to a living person, I think it only appropriate that a design be made for an actual presentation. Perhaps a clear glass fedora? I am willing to put in some funds for the award. So, I'll give this a shot. My personal fav and first vote, for the first 2001 annual Fedora Award is for Dr. Robert D. Ballard, explorer, and discoverer of the Titanic. Check out the link below:

In closing, I would also like to add about my friend that he is also going after Ernest Shackelton's ship, Endurance, which was lost in the Weddel Sea in 1916, after being crushed by ice and stranding Shackelton and his crew at the bottom of the world. Ballard was also at the end of the first season of the television show SeaQuest, giving commentary about the ocean. He is a geologist and Star Trek fan. C'mon, VOTE for BOB!

Well, from what I've read of Dr. Bob lately, he certainly seems to fit the bill. Not only is he so well known, and having appeared in National Geographic articles so many times... yet humble, especially about the Titanic, which is what laymen might know him for, but what he considers one of his lesser achievments...or so I've read.
So Dr. Ballard has my vote...as for the rest of ye?

Get on the wagon with me on this! It's a GREAT idea! We REALLY should do something like this. What do you think?

It seems like a good idea, and I agree with the suggestion of Dr. Ballard. He made one of the most well-known discoveries in recent years. When I was a kid, I was fascinated with his book "Exploring the Titanic."

Oh, brother, here we go again.... When you were a kid? How old are you? I have a signed copy of that book. He's a good guy (BIG BIG Closet Trekker)

Man! I thought most of the people here were at least 30! Let's see, Col., how old you are. You said you were a kid when you read the book. I am going to assume 12 years old at most. Okay, the earliest printing of the book was 1988. So that makes you 25 (give or take)! *gasp*
P.S. Dr. Ballard has my vote. Underwater archaeology is very exciting and the Titanic was a great discovery.
P.P.S. I have a signed copy of the book, too. (My signature) ;)

I'm 28. In august 29...ugh....and yes, I can't help myself. I DO have a signed copy... Ballard's signature. As a matter of fact all of his books are signed. Enough of that...it sounds too vain.....Anyhoot, Martin, its good to see you keep returning. I like to have others to post to ...

I know what you mean about someone to post to. I remember, back in the day, when the forum had about 60 members and there weren't any new posts for days, even weeks! Now with over double the members, it seems strange for no new posts for a couple hours. ;)

I find that these little respits from the mundane encourage my writing and remind me that my efforts will have an audience to read them.

Well, that's interesting, people assuming I'm 25. Actually, I turned 15 last Friday. I would check out that book from my mom's library when I was a REALLY little kid. It was the pictures that fascinated me so. It really stirred the imagination. Then I learned how to read and the book was even better.

Plus the screen name doesn't sound typical of a 15 year old.

To be perfectly honest, I think you had everyone fooled. I would have never guessed you to be under twenty...

If we had a contest to guess members' ages, no one would win! :D The difference in ages of what I had thought people were and how old they really are is shocking! ;)

I would like to keep this thread active. Share your response and or support for this Award. Lets let Gilles and the clan know what we think. Should we have an award like the Fedora. See the original post at the beginning of this thread for more info. Thanks! :D

Yes, the Fedora award is a good idea. The only nominee was Dr. Ballard, and most of the people here have given their vote for him.

Okay. If I remember correctly, you wanted a wood base with a clear resin whip and fedora mounted on it, Right?
If such is the case, It would probably be a lot cheaper to produce a few of them, and give them out at regular intervals. :D
And no, I haven't forgotten. I've been thinking a lot about it too. ;)

I was thinking of a REAL miniture whip coiled up beneath the glass fedora that rests on top..both resting on a wooden base of black laquered wood. A brass plaque would describe to whom (with date) the award was given to. This would be there's.
