An intresting note for the creators of the Raiders Quiz under the games link on the main page. The questions were, "What were the serial numbers on the submarine?" "What was the subs name?"

The following is straight from the U-Boat archives. There was no name for the actual boat. Does any of this match up with the Raiders boat?

Type IA

Commissioned 6 May, 1936; Commanded by Kptlt. Werner Hartmann (Knights Cross) at time of launch.

Commanders
05.36 - 09.38 Korvkpt. Werner Hartmann
10.38 - 08.39 Fregkpt. Oskar Schomburg
08.39 - 01.40 Korvkpt. Klaus Ewerth
01.40 - 07.40 Kptlt. Heinz Scheringer

Career
5 patrols 1 May, 1936 - 1 Aug, 1939 2. Flottille (front boat);1 Sep, 1939 - 31 Dec, 1939 2. Flottille (front boat);
1 Jan, 1940 - 1 Jul, 1940 2. Flottille (front boat)

Successes
12 ships sunk for a total of 55.692 tons
2 ships damaged for a total of 5.401 tons

Fate
The boat was sunk on 1 July, 1940 in the North Atlantic, in position 48.03N, 1130W, by 8 depth charges from the British corvette HMS Gladiolus and an Australian Sunderland aircraft (Sqdn 10/H). 48 survivors (No casualties).

The 48 survivors (entire crew) from the attack were picked up by the HMS Rochester.

Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-26 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.

There was another U-26 in World War One
That boat was launched from its shipyard on 16 Oct, 1913 and commissioned into the Imperial Navy on 20 May, 1914. The Naval war in WWI was brought to an end with the Armistice signed on 11 Nov, 1918.

My source when I wrote that question was not the U-Boat achive or any other U-boat book. It simply was the Raiders film itself and it's script.
The script clearly call's the U-Boat that appeared in Raiders the "Wurrfler Sub" and about it's serial number, look for yourself:

By the way, did you know that film director Wolfgang Petersen used that same U-Boat for his "Das Boot" film?
A fantastic film, a must see!

I LOVE the movie Das Boot. Have the directors cut on DVD in German with English subtitles. The info on the u-boat 26 I just thought you might find intresting. That's all. I appreciate your letting me know about the u-boat used in Raiders as the same from Das Boot, I think I now remember something about it being mentioned a long time back.

That U-Boat was prepared for "Das Boot" when Spielberg asked Wolfgang Petersen if they could us the U-boat for a litle while. Petersen said yes and when he got the u-boat back Petersen said Spielberg broak his litle toy and they had to fix it again.

Don't know if this is true but it's funny. ;)
