View Full Version : Emperor's Tomb hints and tech help
Okay people, to keep places nice & clean, can I ask everyone who now on has problems with ET (any version) to post his problem to this one & only thread. This is because N+more threads about ET strategy hints will turn the table a mess to read. At least in the minds of the staff.
So clearly substitute your problem, version of the game (XB, PC, P2) and warn about possible spoilers.
And I hope that you understand that every other thread opened for help in ET will be served Abloy, no matter if the opener got a solution to his (or her) problem or not. ;)
Thank you.

I don't have the game yet, so I have no real reason to post here at this point, but I'd like to recommend something for clarity. Could all of the posts in this thread have in the subject line what problem the post regards (you know, in bold at the top of the post). I think that would be helpful for all of us.

I am not exactly stuck, but I can certainly use some help from someone who beat this stage.
Is there a trick to beating this stage? (It is the stage with the drill tank).
I think I pretty much have the hang of it, except for when it comes to the point where the ground falls out from underneath you.
Here I have problems, I almost always die at these spots.
I going to try to explain it to you. The ground falls out from under you, then you jump and whip a beam, as soon as you land the ground falls out again, and there is a second beam to whip. I hope you understand what I am trying to say.
It is on the second beam that I have trouble. I can whip the fist beam okay, but when I land, I always land in a hole.
What should I try to do:
1. Should I try a double whip?
2. Should I try to cut my whip swing short so I can land on solid ground?
3. Or should I do a full whip swing, and hope I hit solid ground? Then jump AS SOON AS I hit the ground. (This method works for me some of the time. But not all of the time. I am looking for a more reliable method.)
If you can understand this, I would apprieciate your tips.

Istandbul: The Sunken Palace
There is a pillar you must place explosives on. However, I don't have any explosive charges, nor can I find any explosive charges in the Sunken Palace itself. Should I play previous stages, secret of the Mosque part 1 and 2, to find more explosive charges? In part 1 you get one explosive to advance to the next stage, which is part 2. Is there more explosives I missed in these two stages? Because I can't find any in the Sunken Palace. Or unless there is some in the Sunken Palace itself, then can anyone give me a hint as to where they might be?
Thanks...
James

Gregoire, I know exactly what point you're referring to, because it took me forever to figure out the trick!
Basically, you've got the right idea with your second option. You want to cut your whipswing a bit short in order to land on the solid ground. Only for a second though, as you immediately need to jump and swing again.
Heads up, though- after you round another corner, you'll need to employ this same tactic.

Swords:
To the left of the pillar is a platform that you can get out of the water on. (It is the platform that had te Oxygen tank on it) Jump in the water that is on the other side of this platform. You will see an underground doorway. Swim through it to enter a new area. WATCH OUT FOR SHARKS!:D
You will come out of the water at a Nazi station. But the demo charge is under the water near the station. Gaurded by two Scuba-Nazis.

How? :)
Apparently I HAVE to be underwater to use the super speargun, as pumping 300 rounds into the kraken from above water did nothing. From underwater, occasionally I manage to hit the kraken in some sort of tender spot and it leaves. But in the meantime I'm overwhelmed by these little jellyfish things, and then I drown. I'm also assuming that the demo charges need to be used on the column.
What's the trick? There must be one, because I died llike 10 times in a row, and I'm not set to hard.

Hahahhaha.:D Nice try.
Jump in the water with the Super Spear Gun in hand. Press the left trigger to aim. Aim at the squid's eyes and shoot. You have a whole lot of ammo, so don't worry about conservation, just shoot! Shoot the little jellyfish too if you can. Once the squid retreats swim up to on of the four pillars at set a demo charge. Now swim away as fast as you can. Sometimes jellys will stick on you preventing you from swimming. Do not give up! The jellys will go away eventually.
Repeat this four times, once for each pillar. When all for pillars are destroyed the squid will be blocked off, and the water level will be lowered.
Congratulations, now pick up the Mirror piece.
Tell me if you need help, with anything.

Alright, here's my problem. I beat the game, I've collected all artifacts except two and I've searched high and low for them but I still can't find them. The jade slab in the level where you ring the bells and the gold disc in the first "Netherworld" level where you jump from the falling platforms. I think there's two artifacts in that one, too, because I found the funky mask but I can't find the golden disc and I don't know where it could be. HELP!
If anyone here hasn't found them and you have the strategy guide, please tell me how to find those two artifacts!

Well,
I did not find it myself, but the artifact in the falling platform stage (neatherworld) should be where you have to whip all of those lamps. It is directly opposite the 5 spining pillars.

This one is tricky because you have to shoot the Kracken in the eye IN the water as a certain range. Too far and it's harmless, too close and you get sucked in and die.
Staying in first person mode-- underwater-- shoot at the Kracken until you hit its sensitive eye. It varies so you just have to keep trying different eyes.
When the Kracken disappears into it hole STAY in first person mode and shoot all the jelly fish until there aren't any left. This will clear the water and allow you to move. Not shooting the jellyfish will cause them to stick on you and paralyze you from swimming.
Once the jellyfish are gone, you should have enough time to place a charge on a pillar before you have to start over and do it all again for the next.
I jump out of the water and position myself for an attack after for each pillar.

I have gone through and done the big machine gun part, zip lined to the crane, picked up the boat and moved it to the far right...but it is still way to low to jump from the boat to the ledge with the door...

If it's the artifact I'm thinking of...
Before you enter the room with the Bells of the Dead, you'll pass through a small hallway. Equip the Mirror of Dreams and it will reveal a ladder to the left of the entrance. At the top, you will find the artifact. (This, in my opinion, was one of the best hidden artifacts.)
Btw, there is no bonus level after collecting all the artifacts. It unlocks a Gallery, with color artwork of all characters and levels.
It's an interesting bonus, however, as it includes a few characters that are not in the game. Most notably, there is a model for Abner Ravenwood...which leads me to hope there IS an extra level, character, or cutscene to unlock somehow. Lucasarts is pretty good at keeping game secrets for a few months though...

This is a very detailed stage, so I'll try to make sense. Instead of going to the fountain, behind you there is another platform. You jump on that platform. Then go into first person view, and look down. You will see another platform down below, where a bunch of stones(or are they steps?) are placed. Jump down there. Then you can problably figure out the rest...

James

There are only four coins.
From the starting point:
-Straight ahead, climb the small ledge onto the ruins. Navigate around them (whipping, jumping and wall-hugging) until you reach some stairs. At the top, jump over the gap and fight a swordsmen. Around the corner, fight another swordsmen, then retrieve the coin from in front of the collapsed wall.
-Back at the small ledge, swim toward the underwater ruins. There is a shark circling and some speargun ammo on the ruins. Grab the ammo, then swim up the sunken stairwell. At the top, proceed until you reach a small ledge facing out on a temple entrance. You need to jump at an angle towards the sloping wall and land on the temple. There's a crack in the wall of the temple. Find the demo charge- a coin is within.
-To get the demo charge, walk up the fallen pillar, then cross over to the ledge with a burning fire. Grab two demo charges, jump in the water and swim to a cracked wall (back in front of the temple). Beware the shark, blow the wall, grab the coin inside.
-Return to the temple by climbing out of the water and repeating the angle jump to the temple ledge. Collect the coin inside, then return to the ledge with the burning fire. Grab the third demo charge, then proceed until you find the next cracked wall. Inside is a fountain.
-Continue on until you reach a dirt pathway that leads to the tiled floor of a long hall. There is a large gap in the floor, but before you jump it, drop down into the water. There is a shark, and the final coin rests on the floor by a light.
-Climb out, jump the gap, then put the coins in their respective slots at the end of the hall.

Hi All,
I'm on the level where you have to get the blue torch and light up all the lantern things. I've done that and now its time to solve the puzzle. I don't seem to understand how to solve the puzzle. Did I miss something that gives me a clue as to how to do it? I'm assuming I have to move the 3 rings in such a way that will unlock the one door. I can't seem to find the right pattern. Does it have to match up with a symbol somehow?
Any help would be apprciated.

Press X which will give you an alternate view. A view from above so to speak. You'll see that the chinese puzzle has a pattern surrounding the rings you can manipulate. Turn the rings so that it matches the pattern.

i was stuck there for a moment too, because you can only grab the ledge from one side. Stand on the side of the water and try to grab the ledge from there. Then when you're up there you can jump to the chain(s) of choice after lowering it with the lever(s).

Raffey, Greg, you guys finished ET? Okies I have the PC version here but items wise its probably the same. I'm at Pillars of something in the Netherworld. Third last level I think. With the falling platforms and hanging lamps.
Anyway my health is really low (like 1/4th) and I managed to get to the second platform a few times. But I keep getting killed. Now if I keep trying I might succeed in getting to the third platform but I'll probably won't get any further than that. Are there any healthpacks/potions/canteenfillers there? Or at all in this level?
Also up till now I've just ignored the big stone knights and hurried to outrun them. There's a way of killing them (letting them barge up to you and then step aside so they crush theirselves kaputt into a wall. But you have to let them do that several times, then hit them with the PaCheng twice and then hit the demon spirit with the PaCheng too. Now that's time consuming and will prolly eat some of my precious health too. So it's best to ignore them?
With the four pillars that you need to turn, what's the correct order to turn them so the platform doesn't fall when you jump them. (seems to me turning up the most close platform first is smartest time wise because when you're done turning all pillars that's the one that will fall first. Or does it not matter?
So my questions really:
1. any hope for increasing my health ? where?
2. stone knights, easier way to defeat them?
3. pillars, their order, does it matter?

1. Nope.
2. Yep. Try and kill the blue spirit first so he doesn't keep attacking you (throw Pang Sheck). Then just hack the terra cotta warriors up using Pang Sheck. If you're fast enough, they won't even get a hit in.
I remember when I first saw these guys I spent quite a while running around in a panic worrying about how to defeat them. Finally I just hacked using Pang Sheck and was surprised at how weak they were. They look more menacing than they are.
3. You're right, go for the ones closest to you first. Note that on the section with the two prayer wheels, you won't need your whip (or don't on the XBOX anyway).
Raffey
03-29-2003, 10:35 AM
Yes, J. Charles Holt is correct in all three.
I would suggest taking out a piece of scratch paper and just turning the pillars then jotting down the correct order. It takes some doing but it saves you time in the long run from having to restart the level over and over.
You might not like this suggestion depending on how hard you found the previous level to be but I would suggest replaying it and try to conserve your health and medpacks.
I think you'll find it to be easier than the first time you completed the level.
You will need as much health as you can get as you move on with finishing the game...
(Oh BTW I think if you make it to the third pillars one of the stone statues drops a canteen or medpack when you destroy it with the star weapon but it doesn't fill you up all the way. I think...)

I was wondering if someone could help as I am stuck on the prague level were you enter the room with the chandeleer and you push the lever and the guards below are killed by it. And all thats left is a chain.
I can see the hook to use the whip with so that you get onto the chain but no matter from where I swing and jump off the chain I cannot reach the balconey to the right. I'm assuming it's the right path as all the other doors are locked.
Is their something obvious I'm missing ?? no matter what height I try to jump from Indy always falls short.
Quest
03-29-2003, 12:51 PM
you need to swing to that balcony alright, keep in mind that the height on which you're hanging on a vine/chain/rope depends the length you will swing with it. If you're on the complete top of a chain/rope/vine you wont be able to swing. If you go a little lower you make a short swing move. If you go to the complete bottom of the vine/rope/chain you get farthest. However that does not mean you can reach the balcony by going lowest on the chain. Because height of the balcony is also involved, not just its distance. Finding the right height on the chain/rope/vine is often a challenge I guess.

03-29-2003, 01:37 PM
The problem that I'm having is also related to swinging on vines/ropes/chains. Once you're on the rope/vine/chain and climb up or down, no matter how I try, I can't initiate a swing. The location on the rope doesn't matter..I can climb up or down, but nothing in the world will make Indy swing again.
Is this a bug?

lornconner
03-29-2003, 01:46 PM
I didn't miss it at all...that's my point...once I've climbed up or down the rope/vine/what-have-you, using the walk or go-back buttons does NOT reinitiate the swing.
Indy just hangs there. At first I thought it was because I had remapped the controls. I thought maybe it was a minor bug, so I reset the system defaults. That didn't do any good. Indy still doesn't swing with the W or S keys. Somebody suggested that I might be too high on the rope, but that doesn't make a difference either. I've tried climbing lower, climbing higher, and whistling dixie, but Indy won't swing.
The only things I can do are climb up, climb down, turn around, or jump down and break my neck.
Thoughts?

For anybody else who is facing this problem, I found a solution (sort of)
I finally got frustrated and just pressed every key on the keyboard.
One of the keys (which wasn't mapped) started Indy swinging again. I'm not sure if this is a random glitch or what caused it, but this finally allowed me to swing on the vine.
Has anybody else faced this issue?
I'm trying to figure out if I should submit a bug report.

DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT KEYS on the keyboard helped you to SWING BACK AND FORTH again? I've set my default forward/back/up/down keys to the arrows as well, and I faced the same problem you did.....couldn't get Indy to swing back and forth no matter how low or high I climbed on the vines/chains/ropes.
So I did what you did....I reverted to the default keys and used the W and S keys. I'd rather not have to do that each and every time Indy needs to climb/swing and jump from a vine or chain.
Please post WHICH keys you used to get Indy to swing back and forth (w/keys mapped for forward, back, left and right as the ARROW keys).

Well, I have the same problem, but I pressed every key on the keyboard and nothing works. The only way to fix this problem to my knowlegde is to keybind the "move forward" NOT to your "UP arrow" key but to any other. This must be a bug. I play every other game I have with the arrow keys for moving around and it's very frustrating to move forward by pressing the "end" key for example... :S

If the room you are referring to is the one I'm thinking of then you will need the artifact to light the path to each island (with bells) of the room.
When you get to each island, kill the ghosts and flip the switch. That will cause the bells to ring in a certain order.
You must ring each bell in that exact order.

Charge up the Pa Cheng with mystical energy then fire it at Marshall.
Then, recharge your Pa Cheng with the next mystical energy and fire it a Marshall.

I'm stuck in the courtyard at the well. I've killed everyone and blew up the entrance to the well but, when I dive inside the well I can't move Indy. He just floats there and eventually drowns. Is this a bug in the game or am I in the wrong place? Thanks for any help.

Are you using the spacebar? The spacebar is default for JUMPING, but it is also used for swimming....
Use the spacebar underwater, with your arrow keys or the W,S, A and D keys (if you left movement as the default keys).

Hi!
First of all. It's a great game! At least until the Prague Dungeon part. I can't get the chain swinging again after it's come to a still. I've seen that someone has suggested that you press and hold the "Z" or the "W" (forward key) but nothing happens. It' just does'nt work for me! I've tried ALL other letters and possibilities as well but NO. I have a Brand new Logitech keybord so it's very disapointing if i would have to call it a day now! Hope someone have a GOOD solution for this.
Thanks

Hi all,
I know there were strategies posted here how to defeat the kraken, but I still canīt manage to get through. Iīve tried this shitty level for 2 hours now and Iīm totally pissed off. I only managed to blow up two pillars...
So, is there a cheat to skip a level or can someone provide me with a savegame right after the Krakenīs defeat?
And if they donīt implement a anytime/anyplace saveoption within the next update, Iīll kick their... ;)
TIA!

I'm on the Secret of Peng Lai Lagoon Part 2, the part where you have to use the elevator to get up the scaffolding. For some reason, the elevator only goes up halfway, and then starts back down again. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is it a bug or something?
And I found a walkthrough for anyone who needs help. It's for Xbox, but it works for the PC version too.

Just keep shooting the Kraken in the eyes and any jellyfish that come towards you. Eventually he'll retreat into the cave, and then you set a demo charge on one of the pillers before he comes back out. Keep doing that until you've destroyed all four pillars.
I seem to be having a technical problem in Von Beck's Revenge. The camera refuses to move and as a result it is very hard to manuever Indy left or right. This would be okay except that Indy turns sharply to the right right before the third whip-jump and, since I can't turn him, he runs into a block and stays there until Von Beck catches up and smushes him. I've tried using the A/D keys but they turn him too far. Gah, camera based movement SUCKS.

Use a speargun! And as for the shore bit, not sure (no pun intended)!
You can also kill sharks (and crocs, in Ceylon) with your blade (machete/turkish knife). Just remember to use alternate fire.

Hi. I'm stuck on the level of SECRETS OF THE MOSQUE PART I. I have gotten to the area with the water with sharks in it and you have to whip lanterns to get across chasms. I am at the part where there is an outcropping of jagged rocks below, and I think I have to jump and whip the lantern to get to the cave on the other side. I run forward jump and whip, but Indy just cant get the lantern to swing. Thanks.

You mean the part in Istanbul?
If that is what you mean, then you have to jump, and then in mid-jump you have to whip-swing from a lamp. If you can't get it keep trying, that jump gave me more trouble than any other in the game (unless we're counting Von Beck's revenge, that level is a nightmare).

Still stuck in the chamber with the trapped shark?
It's mainly about timing. You have to run and jump...at the very, VERY last second whip out.
There's not much more to tell you but to keep trying...its the only way to move on...good luck!

I always go for a long run...start running first, then hit jump (spacebar) even if you're not at the edge yet...Indy will jump at the right time. Then whip as soon as you've jumped.

Someone previously asked for info on the artifacts and never received an answer. Would really like to know if artifacts stay in inventory when picked up. Have picked up artifacts and they are not in my inventory and don't know what happened. Since I am well into the game and have only just found out there are 3 artifacts per level, can you go back to a previous level to find the artifacts and have it then count toward the bonus level? Apparently going back means you have to replay the whole level with the bad guys "reincarnated" again?

look, i dont know which artifacts you mean, but i think i can help.
the shelf on the upper left is the shelf of the three artifacts in the first level (tutorial).
to the right is the pargue shelf. then you go down and start from the left (istanbul) and go to the right (hong kong) and then down and so on.
when you load a game, each level is represented as a page in a book. in the levels where there are artifacts, these are drawn in the page of those levels.
so, if you know which shelf represents which level, all you you have to do is just check in which level you do not have a certain artifact, then go to LOAD GAME and check in that level, which stages do have artifacts not present in the shelf.
whoala. i hope you understood my explanation, becausesometimes i dont know how to explain things.

are you playing it on PC or Xbox?
welcome to the Raven!
@ smithwesson44 + curtsy:
Both your problems are related and simply caused by the fact that your CPU and/or graphics cards don't meet the minimum requirements. I suffered the same problems with my 600 MHz Pentium III and a GeForce 2 Pro card (minimum requirements are 700something MHz CPU, the GeForce 2 Pro is OK). I took this opportunity to upgrade my CPU to 1.3 GHz which I anyway wanted to do for a long time, this solved the ET gameplay problems for me.
However, in case you don't want to do such investment just because of the ET minimum requirements, I read about a solution from somebody else. He temporarily changed the keyboard mapping so that the camera movement is controlled with the arrow keys. The keyboard seems to be more responsive than the mouse whenever the CPU gets stressed a lot. I didn't try this suggestion, but he said this helped him to overcome the Von Beck's Revenge level. Don't know if this works in 1st person mode as well.

You already know about how to approach the bells (that is, how to overcome the gap), so now you're standing in front of the bells?
Use the E key to activate "bell ring mode". It should be self-explanatory (i.e. it works the same as in the other puzzles).

Are you using the Default Controls, or the arrows to move?
SOLUTION A:
With the Default Controls, climb up using the arrows, but not all the way, and press W to start swinging again.
SOLUTION B:
For the first chain swings you can use the trick where if you get Indy positioned at just the right angle, you can run, jump, swing, jump and he'll catch on himself.
Hope this helps!
Yes, apparently you cannot use your own control scheme or else you do not have the ability to swing the rope again. That is really annoying seeing as I spent like 3 hours trying to figure it out before I posted here, all to no avail. Thanks a lot, that did help.

Okay, I got the Demo installed on our 'puter this morning, and everything runs just fine, but the prob is that the demo overwrites our DirectX 9 software with version 8.1. This, in turn, prohibits all sound from being played and we must uninstall the demo.
What I want to know is, is there a way to make it so it doesn't overwrite, but instead just runs on DirectX 9?
Thanks!

Okay, I've been stuck on the Von beck's wrath level for about a week now and I didn't know if anyone has beaten that part yet in the Emperor's Tomb game or not.
I am having difficulties at the double jumps where the floor colapses from underneath you jump and swing and then it falls under again.
Either
A.) He'll land it perfectly but when I go to jump forward he stays on the ground whips and then gets chewed up.
or B.) He'll overhoot it and go straight down into the botomless pit.
Is there like any cheats that could possibly get me around this problem? Or if you like type a code, Indy becomes Superman and he doesn't have to worry about any of this stuff?
Well anyhelp that any of you could give would be deeply apprecieated. Thanks.

I know exactly how you feel, believe me. I struggled with this for ages!
On the double whip swings, what you have to do is jump and then more or less immediately after, whip. I know this sounds obvious, but it's important to keep moving.
I have the Prima strategy guide and from it are some hints:
When you reach a long section of jagged holes on the right, run from left to right accross the shortest span. Even if you lose a little time maneuvering, you can make it up on the next whip swing.
After the first few whip-swings, you encounter several floors that crumble right whre you would normally launch your whip-swing over the pits. You must jump earlier, and you must be careful not to extend you jump too far at the end of the swing, or you may land on another section of crumbling floor.
When the double whip-swings begin (toward the last third of the run), let go of the first whip swing a little earlier than you normally would. This maintains your speed and momentum, without risking missing the second connection.
Hope this helps! :D
BTW, I found the music very of-putting, so you may want to mute the sound whilst playing this level.
GOOD LUCK! ;)

For anyone else stuck on this level I found out a real easy answer. After trying for ages I started to jump early and solved it first time.
Jumping early is the key as the whip can reach much longer than you think.
Help! I'm stuck in Emperor's Tomb at the Heart of Kouru Watu level, and I can't swim fast enough to the shore, after the crocodile breaks the gate. Is there a trick to this? Please help.

After you have taken the item and fell down into the water, swim to the exit tunnel away from the gate and the crocodile (there are two tunnels enclosed with vines).
Then swim as fast as you can to the platform with the ladder (to the fountain) on it. When on the platform you will see the crocodile passing... wait till the croc is near the other side of the center piece of the cave and then swim to the shore.

Indiana Jones & Emporers Tomb
Can some1 please tell me how to swing when you are on a chain that you have just stopped swinging so you can climb higher?
Im in Prague, The Dungeon,
Ive got almost to the top where the switch is pulled, the cage drops, I get on the chain, climb to the top of it, turn around, face open window, but I cannot grab anything from a stationary chain which I cant get to swing. Is it possible to start the chain swinging again or is there another way to get upto the top.
PLEASE HELP.................ANY1
Friggin chains, I had a battle with enough of them in the Albino Croc section.

You can't swing the chain from the top. Look for a window shape, and from where you can judge is the right distance and height start swinging again, jumping towards the window.
Good Luck!

Thats where the problem lies.
Once I grab a chain climb up (doesnt matter how high)
I cant start swinging again.
what function/s do u have to do to restart a swing once you have stopped.
I can start swinging again with a whip, once ive stopped, but not on a chain.
So frustrating when u have to restart way back there when u die.
Please save me.

Are you using the Defaults or your own keys?
If you're using defaults, just press w to start swinging again.
You can only swing again if you're using the Defaults!
Good luck!

Thanku VERY much Jastro,
Problem solved.........I had changed my movement keys to left/right/up/down arrows (which 90% of all pc gamers do)
because I hate using the old W.A.S.D keys.
Im ever so curious as to why the W key, which I replaced with the UP ARROW didnt do the same function when changed. All the UP ARROW would do on a chain is make u climb.NO SWING
I must have done a good job then, because I reached the GREAT HALL stage without being able to swing on a single chain after it had stopped swinging. I must say I was about to toss it out the window in stages like...Albino Croc, Dungeon, before the rats across the chasm , At the hall with rats and the Great Hall which is where I got to when Jastro saved me from throwing out what should be a good game...........THANKS M8
Bugger......Its going to be a pain in the asssssssss now, getting used to new keys..........YUCK

Hi guys,
I have EMPEROR'S TOMB on my XBOX and have collected every artifact except the very last one - THE HEART OF THE DRAGON!
I have looked at a few walkthroughs, surfed the net for answers and played this last level to the point where I can do it blindfolded! I still can't manage to pick up the artifact before the game goes into the next video sequence.
So far the best strategy I have been able to determine is to shoot the bad guy with my last THROWING KNIFE. This means I can hit from a distance and once I have thrown the knife it leaves my hands empty ready to pick up straight away. THE HEART OF THE DRAGON falls right at my feet and I go to pick it up straight away (pressing Y). Indy begins to pick up the artifact and for a brief second it even says HEART OF THE DRAGON at the top of the screen but the video sequence begins and he drops it again!
I have tried whipping the artifact away (in the same manner you would to disarm a foe) and even walking up to the guy and simply taking it off him but nothing seems to work!
If anyone has an insight I'd love to hear it because I'm just about ready to throw the damn thing out the window.
Cheers,
Rob (Australia)

You don't need to pick it up...the last level level doesn't have an artifact, the one before has one, but the first level of the netherworld, the one with all the terra cotta guys and those blue skeleton things, has 2 artifacts, one on a ledge by where the last blue skeleton is, and the other one at the end of the long series of whipping lanterns.
With that, you'll have all of the artifacts.

Thanks man!
The walkthrough I was reading was a bit vague on this and implied THE HEART OF THE DRAGON was the last one. The gallery ain't much though, I was kinda expecting more.
I guess this beggs the question whether it is possible to grab THE HEARTH OF THE DRAGON? Maybe there's an alternate ending if you do. I dunno, I've come pretty damn close!
Cheers,
Rob

I've just bought the emperor's tomb game for the PC and am having problems with the controls. I have tried both the keyboard and game pad but find the camera does not follow Indy around properly. If you turn and face one way it dosn't spin round so you can see ahead for ages, if at all. Also with the walk button held down I can't turn around or look at different angles whilst stood still!
Has anyone else found this or is there a way round it?!

Hey,
When I play the Infernal Machine, and I try to access the interface, the only thing it does is the Health meter will light up, so I can't save the game or get any of my items. Also, sometimes after I pick up an item, such as treasure or a weapon, the screen will change to black. Can someone please help? Is it the computer, or the game? Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same troubles when I started trying to play it a year back. I had to give up because of these problems (exactly the problems you describe).
I pretty sure it's because it's such an old game, back then Windows 98 was futuristic and snazzy and DirectX 5 was all the rage. The game isn't expeccting to be run on Windows2000/XP with DirectX 9.
There are a few things you can do to help such as running the game in compatability mode. But even then I only got minimal improvements on Win2000. Apparently XP is much better with old games.
I did think about getting my hands on a N64 emulator and trying it that way, problem is getting hold of the game...

I've got the same problem. Did you find a solution?
I know it's been awhile since y'all posted, and I haven't even finished the level yet, but I found that while you're taking the last short jump prior to where you get stuck, if you begin to move the mouse to left just before the jump (timing is important) you should be far enough left of the block that you can still whip and swing. Just remember you don't have to be in the dead center to swing.
Hope this helps if you haven't beat it yet.

They don't care much about the multiple threads anymore, so don't worry about it. If you are trying to get where I think you are, just try walking on the railing to get into the alcove (the artifact one). I think that's what I did.

Now, I'm afraid I've missed a few....unless the collection showing up isn't necessarily in proper order on the shelves. I have a very nice collection.....just a few missing at certain locations.
I'm afraid this game is just too frustrating in too many aspects to be genuinely FUN!
I've reached the Emperor's Tomb and the controls are so unpredictable, I'm having great difficulty getting Indy to climb out of the wall crushers. While I HAVE made it a few times, he runs into more problems with those zapping orbs and can't seem to reach the end of the level.
EDIT: I have FINALLY progressed past this area and have reached the puzzle of the bells room.

Yeah, as for the bells puzzle, knowing how to proceed is the key.
I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but, I just wish the game has in-game save slots. It would swing the pendulum from frustrating to exceptionally fun for me.
Next, I'd concentrate on getting a grip on the camera controls.

You have to do a running whip swing. This one had me stumped for awhile, too. Once you get it, though, it won't be so hard next time.
Essentially, you have to get Indy running with the whip in hand, jump from the opening, do the Whip Swing command and follow through with the release so he lands on the other side. Timing is critical!

I had all kinds of problems after I dropped the chandelier onto the goons below.
For whatever reason, Indy would not make a successful swing from the chain to the balcony. I did finally get it, and then had to do it all over again as he got swarmed by the goons from the next room....and very little health left.
Did anyone else have problems with this particular swing from the chain to the balcony?

I have a question about the Artifacts Collection:
If I've missed an artifact here and there, can I just replay the level that has that/those artifact/s, or will I have to start from the first one I missed and then play all the subsequent levels to collect them all? If so, that pretty much kills the game for me. I hope I only have to replay the levels that I missed and the artifact will be added to those I already have.

That all depends on what you're using for controls. The PC game can be setup to play from a 10-button game controller OR from the Keyboard/Mouse.
When you start the game again, you should check the Controls option. Everything is listed there.

Yes, I know this is a rant. But, after a couple of weeks of sheer frustration dealing with the unpredictable controls, I'm about at my wit's end.
In the Puzzle of the Bells, on the second set of bells, my control messed up and I hit the wrong bell at first. It wasn't so bad at the beginning, because I could select the Patcheng and get rid of the skeletal spirits without too much problem.
However, when my controls messed up again, I could no longer select the Patcheng --- nor anything else except the canteen! I tried my scroll wheel, hot keys, tried pulling the ring on the side (that worked just fine) BUT NOTHING I did enabled Indy to select anything other than the canteen! He was stuck holding that while those stupid skeleton spirits worked away at his health.
End of rant. Almost end of my efforts to deal with this game, too. :(
EDIT: This is repeatable. I just did it again to see if it still does this after rebooting my computer and starting the game fresh. Yes, it DOES! The only correction to the original post is that whatever it is that Indy has in his hand when he tries to ring the bells is what he'll be stuck holding. This time, it was the mirror.
I'm sorry I may sound disgusted, but it's because I am.

I'm using a combination of keyboard/mouse just like you.
The timing is critical as to when you let Indy release to reach the other side. This jump, and the one that comes a little later in the Library, had me frustrated as well.
With the combination keyboard/mouse, I really don't have a problem as long as the controls respond as they should. But this first 'running whip swing' is something new at this stage of the game and takes some 'practice' I suppose.
Dyre Straits
06-28-2003, 04:58 PM
This is an issue I've had with the game throughout. I believe this particular situation is such that Indy has gone into 'combat' mode, maybe, and, when he's in that mode, you cannot switch whatever is in his hands.
I've had places where his revolver ran out of ammo and I tried to holster it. If there's anyone pounding away at him, or if he's 'targeted' someone to fight with, he will NOT drop that weapon....or whatever he has in his hand at the moment.
The only thing about this situation at the Bells is that Indy doesn't APPEAR to be fighting or in combat mode. I've moved him around....ran across the hidden walkway, gotten clear across the way. He simply will NOT drop whatever is in his hands or accept any input from me to switch to something else.
Attila the Professor

What I'm dealing with NOW is the inability to DIRECT Indy as he makes his leaps and whip swings away from Von Beck.
After successfully leaping and whip swinging across several areas, I come to a place where there's a stone block on the right. Indy INSISTS on going to that rock, but it breaks. There's actually a whip swing (it appears) but he WILL NOT approach the area that should apparently be his jumping spot.
Instead, he goes for that stone block each and every time -- it breaks -- and Von Beck runs over him.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!
Nowhere in the entire game -- to this point -- have I had to use all kinds of keyboard keys and options to get the desired result.
NOW, without any warning, I find that not only do I have to hold the FORWARD key down to keep him moving forward, I ALSO have to use the LEFT and RIGHT keys AT THE SAME TIME to move him in the direction he needs to go.
AND.....I have to ALSO use the JUMP key at the right time.
I'm using the Keyboard/Mouse combo as the game won't work right with my Logitech Wingman Rumblepad. (The camera angle defaults to looking almost straight down on Indy's Fedora.)
When you asked if I'd tried turning Indy, Yes, I had done that attempting to do so with the mouse. At least he would often respond to input from the mouse that way, but he refused to respond on this level.
I want to finish this game, but, I have to say I enjoyed Infernal Machine much more than I have this one. At least Infernal Machine had more puzzles and better controls than this one. I just hope the Developers are listening. But, I'm not holding my breath. I think they decided to go for pain and aggravation more than for the fun element.

I just hate for a game to be so frustrating that you feel 'relieved' you completed it rather than, "Man, that was fun! Let's do it again!"
I even read one reviewer who had to buy a new keyboard because his frustration caused him to hit his keyboard so hard he broke it. I can completely understand.
I do intend to complete the game. I just don't want to have a coronary over it in the process.

I've always had trouble with the double and triple whipswings (though I've always gotten them after a couple tries), but for some reason, this one is different.
When you first climb the scaffolding and kill the crossbow guard, you're presented with two posts on which to double whipswing. I've now tried it 21 times, no lie, without success. I can't get the whip around the second post, and keep falling. This is worse than the Kraken boss at the end of Istanbul. I'm reaching my wits' end here.
Has anyone else experienced my frustration or have any tips for the double whipswings?
Thanks.

okay, after 42 tries, I have finally gotten past Call to Battle. The next level, however, features two double whipswings in a row at the outset - and on the first one I had no problem. The problem is on the second one.
After seven tries, I'm convinced there's a glitch or some kind of algorithym thing with multiple whipswings. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't. In any case, I'd like to wring the neck of the genius who thought it would be fun to have a level-by=level save system.

The thing is, I've finally gotten most of those annoying multiple whip swings down pat. You pretty much have to hold down the forward movement key and hit the JUMP key at the right moment at the end of the previous swing. And then you have to hold down that forward movement key and repeat.

Well, it won't work though. Indy ALWAYS jumps right trough that 2nd chain. I've tried to jump from higher up, tried to jump from the 1st chain to the 2nd switch... Nothing works.

Just whip jump earlier than you logically think Indy ever could in the real world and it is so easy.
I think it is the best action level in the entire game as the car chase and plane ones are just too repetitive.
Also when you have cleared all the jumps continue to run until Von Beck can no longer follow you (you'll know why if you stand still after all the jumps!!).

Well, if you were living at my house right now, you'd come close to seeing a grown man cry. I'm VERY serious!
I have tried, over, and over, and over, and over, and over.....
When I think I might be making progress, Indy will decide to run up to the edge of the next leap and STOP. He won't run, jump, and whip like I've had him to do on so many other places. He just stops and starts swinging the whip at nothing!
I've gotten past the first left turn and started down the straight area and that's as far as he'll get. It's like he's running into a wall almost.
I have reconfigured my controls so that I don't accidentally have him to a dive -- which had happened a couple of times when I meant to hit the A key and hit the Q key instead.
There just seems to be no forgiveness on this level as everything has to be PERFECT from beginning to end.
I'm just glad to know others have made it. It just should NOT be this hard to do it. Not with all the gaming I've done using Keyboard/Mouse controls.

Yes, I finally did get Indy all the way through this ridiculous level that only serves the purpose of making the game seem artifically longer than it really is. In fact, I think that's one of the reasons The Collective opted to not have ingame saves. This way, the game takes artificially longer than it would otherwise.
Anyway, I have made it to the Netherworld and, hopefully, will bring Indy's adventure to a close sooner now, rather than later.

I tried re-installing, but it didn't do anything about it. I have the patch installed too... Maybe it's not a bug. How can I get up there? The 1st time I played the game there was that problem too, but I can't remember how I solved it

I have ET on my computer and I'v been stuck on that level for months! I just can't get past the part where the floor starts to collapse.
Oh, Hi, I'm new here, and this is my first post.

Yep, when I tried to play the infernal machine preview on my PC it does the exact same thing.

Some walkthrough I read suggested setting it to easy on that level, if you haven't already.
Just a thought. I'm still arguing with my dad to let me get the blasted game...

Infernal Machine is not supported or compatible with Windows XP. (however you may want to try setting all the IM files to run in Win98 mode)

Larry, I can really empathize with you!
I haven't even written half the pent-up frustration I've had with this particular level. (And there are just certain things about the way this game was devised that cause additional aggravation, too.)
Anyway, once I got the hang of making Indy move more toward the center for his next whip swing, things got a little more 'controllable' from there. BUT, even then, he would often go in a direction where it seemed I had no control over him. It's like he 'locked on' to a spot and just HAD to go there.
Finally, when I did get Indy to the part where he slides down the ramp and has to make a last whip swing to the other side, he came up short! I had to do the whole thing all over again!
That part where the floor falls out? Be prepared, buddy, there's another one past that! Anyway, try to remember which ones they are and try not to let Indy do a full swing and jump. He has to 'come up short' a bit to keep from dropping into the abyss. And, Yes, it's easier said than done!

Um, update direct X...
It should have automatically done that when you installed it.
What part of the game are you in?
Interesting problem, but in the games table next time, thank you.

It continues to amaze and baffle me as to why a problem gets posted and the party fails to even as much as list the computer specs they're using.
Before any kind intelligent answer can be supplied, it's necessary to post the following information about your computer:
1. What Operating System?
2. What CPU? (Pentium, AMD, and what model and speed?)
3. How much and what type of RAM memory is onboard?
4. What video card is installed and how much Video RAM memory? (Is it onboard, PCI, or AGP?)
5. What Sound Card is installed? (Onboard or PCI?)
6. Have you installed the DirectX Version mentioned in the Error Message? AND, have you tried the Tests available in DXDIAG?)
There may be additional information needed, but, this at least gives a much better idea of what possibly could be happening to generate this error.

Okay, my neighbor had this prob when I tried to install the demo on his comp.
Basically, theres one answer: Get a new comp.
And the problem is NOT DirectX, the computer is just so stupid that it thinks it is.
Its most likely your video card. If its not that, cehck your memory specs.
Oh, and btw: when you double click the "Emperor's Tomb" shortcut, it opens up a new window, with Indy, where you can click start game. Instead, click help, then analyze your computer. It should then tell you what your problem is.
And DO NOT ask me how to fix your video card. I have no idea. :)

There's no 'fix' for it if the card doesn't support T&L. The only solution is a new vid card that does. I know that's bad news, but cards that do support the feature are fairly cheap these days.

How do you swing on ropes?? If I jump onto a rope, stop swinging, and turn, how do I start to swing again?? Please help soon!
The ET tends to mess up while using arrows. Rebind to WASD and try again...
To be honest, ET should have not been released on PC, as most of the games made for consoles.
Well, the LucasArts saw our drooling here and went after our buck$.

I use the arrow keys, not the WASD controls... but lets say I do use the WASD, that means my problem is this: I press W and he climbs up... I press S and he climbs down... A and D make him turn... how do I start swinging again? If it helps, I'm actually on a chain. Not a rope... I just got the game, I'm at the place in Ceylon where there's a big crocodile... like, huge. lol
If you use the search, you'll find trillion+n threads about the same problem... my only advice: use WASD, not the arrows. It'll sort out.

Mara,
I use the WSAD option for controls. When using this, the W will cause Indy to start swinging again. The Arrow keys will be used to move him up and down on the rope or to turn him around.
Now I'm on Von Beck's Revenge level, and I just can't beat it. Everytime I try it, Indy falls in a hole or gets crushed by the drill tank. The camera wants to turn left alltime, and I can't get it turned. What do I do? I don't want to change the levels name or such thing, before I'm sure that there isn't any other way. Any ideas? I'm playing on PC, with 2 Ghz, 512 MB ram and a Geforce 4 Ti4200.

I struggled with this level for about 2 weeks off and on.
Finally, among other things, I discovered that you have to use the controls that move Indy left or right as needed. You can't let the game engine determine where Indy goes. In my case, sometimes he'd run to one of the big stone blocks and just stop there.
So, try moving him away from the sides so that you have more freedom to make him jump.
I hated (and still hate) this level...but mostly because the controls are so unpredictable.
Good luck!

That happened to me too. The way I solved it was by being just above the beam of light on the chain and swinging from there. And then when you let go press "W" until you reach the chain and when you do, let go of it ("W" key) and you won't fall right through it. Hope this helps

In the SECRET OF THE PENG LAI LAGOON, PART 2 level, the elevator does not go up whenever I try to make it (that is but pulling the lever). I am talking about the first elevator that comes right after the confrontation with the group of Nazis. So I was wondering, is this a bug? I installed the patch but it doesn't help this problem.

How come when I turn on the emperors tomb it says my graphics card does not support d3d. I have a matrox G450 and it should be able to take it. at the very least does anyone know how to rectify the problem?

Can somebody help with hown to cross Von Beck's Revenge? I cannot run straight and i get caught with the mechanic arm.
You have to press the "A" and "D" keys, while alltime pressing the "W" key. The game has an automatical controller here, and you have to control it by yourself sometimes.

I just spent about 65 on a GeForce 4 MX 440. Installed the drivers and stuff. Computer recognized the card.
I don't see any improvement though. The game is still not running as smoothly as I thought it would do now.
What can I do? Is there some option in the game to make it run better now that I have a better card? Or... How can I get my money worth and get the crap out of the card?
Please answer.

Have you checked the gigabytes? (I'm just kidding) Geez I don't know. Have you checked the other requirements of like the MHz and Pentium? I was planning on buying it but I probably would need to spend about $200 on a new video card Cdn. I tried downloading the demo and it took too long. Then I downloaded it at my Dad's work but they didn't have a burner. Does your video card thingy support the Transoform and lighting system. This probably won't help you but if you can recognize the problem whether it is a new computer and could you post your computer cotents? I'd like to see if you have it higher or about the same. I have a 556 MHz and I don't know what pentium.

Does it stop at each frame or just slows down once and a while and locks up for a second. I don't know what I'm doing but it could be the amount of free space in your computer. It's about time someone has given you the real reason...I could be right just check. If you do and everything's fine you can yell at me because you already did or something.
