Sorry, Indy doesn't count, that's too easy, but from all the films Spielberg has made, pick your absolute favorite. I guess we can include Back to the Future, since he did have a lot to do with it. Pick say, your top 5.
1 - Jaws: Awesome movie, I love the music, and I love the entire last act of the movie, just awesome. One of the coolest endings ever.
2 - Jurassic Park: How can you beat a movie about dinosaurs?! Not to mention it has the absolute BEST special effects ever. They top even today's most advanced work.
3 - Saving Private Ryan: best War film ever, period.
4 - Close Encounters: A fun film with a very cool story.
5 - Back to the Future: Why not? It's a blast to watch, and it's one of the most inventive stories to come along in a long time.

as you mentioned Spielburg did not Direct BTTF, but he was a producer (I think he was executive prodecer actually), if that's what you mean, but he didn't write it or anything

1941 is worth checking out, he also has a musical inspired theme in it like ToD in the beginning if you didn't know that.;)
I personally think it's Zemeckus's film, and writer Gale's, but I guess theres no harm in including it, is there?
But my top five:
Saving Private Ryan
Jarassic Park
ET
Shindler's list
Jaws
Now if we did the best Zemeckus films, it would definitely be:
BTTF
Forest Gump
Cast Away
Romancing the Stone

Actually I'll replace Minority Report for ET. So now my vote stands as:
Saving Private Ryan
Jurassic Park
Minority report
Shindler's List
and Jaws

It's indeed really good but don't forget Apocalypse now wich is in my opinion one of the best films ever, way before SPR.

I can't pick a favorite, they're all great!
I've only seen parts of 1941, I saw the very beginning in an old WWII era gunpit at a fort in LA, they set up a screen at one of my reenacting events. There were Germans, Legionnaires (Roman and French), Confederates...that was an interesting night...Anyway, in the beginning of the movie there's the girl from the beginning of Jaws. You remember, the skinny dipper! She goes skinny dipping in the Pacific only to be lifted out by a Japanese submarine's parascope. Unfortunately, the DVD player stopped working right then and for the rest of the weekend everyone wondered "What happened to the naked chick?"
Can someone answer that?

Hmmm, I have a strange feeling this question is posed to me. I never watched 1941 myself, but I read about the big opening featuring a big musical, thats why I recommended it. I definitely will rent this though, the naked chick sounds funny.:D
But I've also read the movie itself was bad, but I'll give it a shot.;) It's Spielberg afterall...
...Hopefully, someone who has seen this will enlighten us Kill.

Jurassic Park easily. It's one of the best movies of all time.

Jurassic Park was one of those 'film events' that come along every so often. The film was great, but I remember the teaser trailers even more vividly!

Just watched E.T. on telly tonight, the first time I've seen it in years. Still brings a tear to my eye...

But was the half hour after that really necessary? It should have ended with him looking at her through the water, IMO anyway...

Well, Spielberg probably had this idea that in the end, the robots should be more prevailing than the humans.

One of the facinating aspects of Steve is how he translates what he perceives in his head, and how he translates that to his audience. With that in mind these are his directoral films that any student of film should study:
Jaws
Always
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Empire of the Sun
The rest are just cherries on the top, showcasing his ability to entertain. The ones above demonstrate new techniques in the ability of the direction a film can take.

Since this topic came up in the KOTCS forum, I felt this old thread was relevant!
Blade started the discussion regarding his favorite Spielberg films, but besides personal favorites, what do you guys think are his best films? Personally I'd go with Jaws, Raiders, Close Encounters, E.T., Schindler's List, Empire of the Sun, and Saving Private Ryan!

-Saving Private Ryan
-Jaws
-Empire of the Sun
-Poltergeist(Although its a Speilburg Production)
-Shindler's List
Didn't I read that Speilberg practically directed Poltergeist but that union rules at the time prevented him from doing two films at the same time so they brought in Tobe Hopper to take credit for it. Or something like that.
I'd Go:
1A. Raiders
1B. ET - I'm a sap what do you want???
2. Schindler's List - A true timeless classic. Sad, tragic, but a classic.
3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Everyman meets the extraordinary. Classic beard.
4. Jaws - I'm going to steal this so thanks to who ever wrote it, "Jaws is a classic because the characters are more real than the shark."
Wow... it gets tougher after that...
5. I have to go with... Saving Private Ryan.
So many of his movies while good are frustratingly close to being GREAT but for whatever reason don't quite make it.
Jurrasic Park... the book ruined the movie for me. Couldn't appreciate the movie on its own terms. The book was primal and brutal. The movie was light and cartoonish.
Always... is very, very good, great performances and story, drags a little bit in the middle.
Amistad... tries to be Schindler's List but it is clear that this story is not as personal to Speilberg as Schindler.
Minority Report... I LOVE this movie but the ending to me just lacks a little bit of umph somehow. Needed a grander more hitchcockian ending.
Empire of the Sun... great movie... just at times seems a little dry or detached to me.
AI... love the movie but will echo that the needlessly prolonged ending kept the film out of the "classic" category.

I'm a big 1941 fan and I'm surprise how so many people pan this movie, it had so many great moments from it, favorite scenes of mine is the jitterbug dance that leads up to the U.S.O riot between the army, marines, navy, and the mexican Zoot suiters, Ned Beatty firing an aircraft gun in his house, and the Japanese torpedoing a ferris wheel thinking its Hollywood and the ferris wheel rolls down the pier. Really funny stuff!
