What a crock that they are using that new bastardized, homogenized title for the DVD release, like in recent VHS releases. Do they think that somehow people (consumers) don't realize that Raiders of the Lost Ark is part of (the beginning of even) the Indiana Jones franchise? Do they think we are that ignorant?
As far as I am concerned, there never was a movie by the title "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark". Why do they pretend that this is how it was originally released, and deny a movie it's true title? In 1981, the marquees and the movie tickets read "Raiders of the Lost Ark", nothing more, nothing less. Would you rename the Holy Bible? (that was rhetorical btw, don't answer it)
It all smacks of 1984, where the government would "rewrite" the history books as it suited them, even making changes to changes they'd already made. After all, they say the history books are written by the winners. Or by those named George Lucas (Greedo did *not* fire first!).

Oh and even if the case calls the movie some BS title, they'd better not commit utter sacrilege and change the actual marquee as it plays at the beginning of the movie...
Anyone who has a recent VHS release (with the box calling it "Indiana Jones and the RotLA"), did they change the actual footage to reflect this?

No, the VHS version has simply "Raiders of the Lost Ark." I think it should remain "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
Why change history??

Who knows, maybe that is what they will add to it. What is stopping them?

Aaron H, NabziF, Indy4ever --
We are merely passing through history. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" IS history.

Yeah, they're a bunch of dumb bastards, just like that thing with ET the extra terrestial. I didn't even bother seeing the special edition. Yes, I think it's retarded how they change it to indiana jones and the raiders of the lost ark, but it doesn't bother me that much. I just want my Indy dvd box set!
I think the Orwellion parallel is going a bit too far....
It is just a brand name that they are attching to the movie, i wouldnt worry about it for all intents and purposes it remains Raiders only for marketing

I think they're trying to be politicialy correct.
nabziF is right. Everyone knows that Raiders of the Lost Ark WAS the first adventure movie of the series. I mean, the film is an absolute classic now. Everyone has the opening scene imprinted in their subconscious.
Why mess with perfection?

I hardly think "everyone has the opening scene imprinted in their subconscious" (Canyon, 2003). From our perspective, sure, we do, but what about all the people (about half of everyone) that has never even seen Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Relax folks. It's just the title on the box. It's still "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on the film. I'm guessing the "Indiana Jones" was added to the box for store display purposes. Raiders is the only Indiana Jones property without "Indiana Jones" in the title. Stores display titles alphabetically so in order to keep Raiders with the other Indiana Jones titles, the name needed to be added to the box.

I also read Lucas put it in because he wanted it to fit with the other "Indy Jones and the...". Though it also works as a marketing ploy.
Personally at first, I thought it spoiled it a bit, but realized its not so bad since it has a certian ring to it. But so does Raiders of the Lost Ark...

I watched the DVD trailer and I just dont like the sound of Indiana jones and the raiders of the lost ark. I grew up with Raiders and i think it should stay the same. I mean come on are they gonna change everything. Im just glad they havent altered it like E.T. Or add digital f/x to it.

I actually think it's better that the names of the films are;
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
It's more consistant :)

yes, I agree with you, either all the films are raiders, or all are indiana jones or all are different
don't go 2 one way and 1 another

However, you should keep with the original title, seeing as it is...the original title.

As long as they don't replace Indy's whip with a cell-phone, I'm ok with this change.
I dont see why it shouldnt be harmonised with the rest of the series to be honest i really dont see why it bothers so many people that much as it is just the pr title.

I'm annoyed at the title change... I really think they should keep the original title. Do they think people won't know it's part of the Indy trilogy unless it begins with "Indiana Jones and the"? Give people some credit, and the movie some credit. It's legendary enough that even people who haven't seen it before know that's it's one of the greatest films of all time. What's worse than the title change is what I saw on the video tape covers at the local rental store, though. Each of the films in the trilogy has a little episode number (I think Raiders was #40-something) so that it fits in with the Young Indy Chronicles. Reducing the movies to mere episodes, as though Raiders were equal to an episode of Young Indy Chronicles, is inexcusible. I certainly hope they don't do that to the DVD versions...
