View Full Version : Can Indy fly or not?
I have one quest for U guys. Can Indy Fly or not?
In Temple of Doom Willie askes him: "You know how to fly don't you?"
Indy: "No, do you?"
Now in Last Crusade Henry askes Indy:
"I didn't know you could fly a plane."
Indy: "Fly yes; Land no!"
All U guys outthere most know the answer?

Clever title, thought you asked if Indy could fly, literally, spread his wings kind of deal.
Some say he just took his Himiliyia[sp] incident as a hard lesson and decided to get some flying lessons in between Temple and Crusade. Maybe Jock teached him but never got around to teahing him the most crucial part: LANDING.
"Fly yes!...Land, no."
Maybe there are different theories. Perhaps he wanted to show off in front of his dad?
[I remember there was a thread on this, but I've a no clua where sit ist.]

I have to say that I was not confused by the thread title. In fact, my first thought were, "Fly, yes. Land, no!"
I have to go along with the theory that, as of ToD, Indy had no flying skills. However, after the Lao Che plane ordeal, he learned more about it...just not enough to know about landing yet.

though in temple (WHICH IS A PREQUEL TO RAIDERS) he flies the doomed plane pretty well for having never flown. he notes the altimeter, fuel gauge etc... and he is able to fly the plane, except it is leaking out its fuel. he never lands the plane...it crashes. therefore in crusade he is able to fly, but not land, because he never has landed.

If you take into account the novels, a few of them deal with Indy getting flying lessons and of course when it comes time to land something always happens and the instructor is forced to take over so fly yes land no. As for that contradicting Temple, it wouldn't as he was taught on a two seat open cokpit biplane and not a commercial trash hauler he would not know how to fly the larger plane ie no experience with a multi-engine beast of an aircraft. So when Wilie asks 'can you fly this thing?' Indy's response of 'No, Can you?' is appropriate as is his comment afterward 'How hard can it be'and then the run down of the instruments. He knows these things but not how to handle the larger more complex multi-engine craft.

Almost everyone can keep a plane in the air, and Indy would be good at it, with his great reflexes and stuff, but landing requires practice.
