View Full Version : What scenes Define Indiana Jones for you?
'allo
Which moment in the films is your most iconic favorite moment/short sequence that is opitmises Indiana Jones for you (i.e. the bouldar in Raiders, climbing atop the German Sub)
For me my top 5 heroic moments would have to be:
1. Indiana Jones is back to normal and very cheesed off bit in ToD when Indy begins to save the slave children.
1= Indy climbing on top of the Nazi sub, iconic and stirring.
3. 'You lost today kid but that doesnt mean you have to like it (young indy segment, LC)
4. Indy drinks from Grail/saves Henry (Temple,LC)
5. Indy threatens to blow up the ark but doesnt, nothing else lays out his character better.
(Just as a note of interest only 1 of my favorite scenes take place in Indy in action hero mode)
But enough of me, what about you....?

#1 Opening scene in ROTLA where Indy snaps the gun out of the guide's hand with his whip. Of course, the whole following scene up to when Indy takes off in the plane is the perfect definition of his character and what he is all about.
#2 The moment after Indy says, "I don't know. I'm making this up as I go" he takes the horse and races after the truck. Once again the energy and excitement of Indiana Jones is epitomized.
In actuality, every single scene in ROTLA is a masterpiece by itself i.e. the bar fight, the basket chase are favorite defining scenes of mine.
Similarly...
#3 In the opening of the Temple of Doom, the nightclub scene is a brilliant portrayal of another great side of Indy and leads us on a non-stop ride.
#4 For me the entire Last Crusade is a beautiful hommage to the Indiana Jones genre. :)

1. The scene with Belloq in the Cairo bar - really interesting insight into both their characters
2. Indy threatening to blow up the Ark - again, Indy and Belloq, and of course, the Ark Trek march right before that
3. The whole Indy/Henry relationship in LC, but in particular, the closing moments - "Indiana" and "illumination"
4. Indy doing a Christ-like sweep of Hell to free the virtuous - the whole kids saving bit, and especially the main Thuggee Guard fight
5. All of Castle Brunwald once Indy saves Henry, particularly the betrayal of Elsa and Donovan

i would have to say the 3 scenes that define indy for me are :
1 the opening action sequence in raiders.
2. the classroom scenes in raiders and last crusade.
those scenes show both sides of his nature. the man of action and the intellectual.

It's very hard to pick just one, but the one that touches me the most is Indy and Henry on the beach. As Henry walks by after the Charlemagne quote, Indy's internal monologue, while silent, suggests volumes. It's that depth combined with being tough as nails that endears me.

1) The scene where Indy just shoots the sword slingin arab.
2) "I didn't know you could fly a plane!" "Fly yes. Land..... NO!"
3) The scene where Indy climbs back up the cliff after going over on top of the tank. I love how his hat rolls back to him. He just refuses to die.
4) When Indy warns elsa to respect the Grail Knights warning and not remove the Holy Grail from its temple.

1. When Indy's hat blows back to him after he climbs up the cliff and his dad hugs him. As AcesHigh said, "he just refuses to die". By this point in the movie i always get sort of overcome with emotion. (i know, i know...i'm a dork)
2. The final scenes of LC, with the whole "Indiana, let it go" thing, the description of what they "found" during their journey, and their riding off into the sunset. I LOVE THAT!!
3. Just before INdy goes to save the kids in TOD and he puts Shorty's hat on him and they look at each other and smile. It's just so cute.
4. Of course, the opening scene in Raiders, starting from when he grabs the guy's gun with the whip. When i saw that for the first time, i remember thinking, WHOA! THis guy is TOO COOL!!
5.The whole well of souls scene.

It's gonna be a long night...
For me, many scenes define the character of Indiana Jones as follows:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
When Indy hears something, unfurls his whip and disarms Barracana! Wow, who is this guy!?
Indy approaching the idol of the Chachapoyan Warriors - the tension, even after the 100th viewing is unbearable!!!
Indy running from the boulder - complete adranaline rush!!!
When Indy tells Jock that he "hates snakes!" it gives us another very interesting insight into the character.
Indy teaching in the classroom, and the whole I LOVE YOU scene - I love seeing the other side of Indy's character and how he reacts to women!
The fight scene in Marion's bar - Indy's usual style of fighting - "Whisky!?"
The streets of Cairo - the way he makes sure that Marion is okay and how he cracks that whip at those bad guys! I'm impressed!
Indy shooting the arab swordsman - I laugh my head off every time I see that!
Indy in the map room. The whole scene is wonderful and Indy's passion for archaology and discover is evident here.
Indy when he is in the Well of the Souls holding onto that rope. The look on his face is evident that he really doesn't like snakes!!!
Indy going after the Ark truck on a white horse
*sighhhh!!!*
Indy being thrown from the truck going underneath, coming back and getting back at that Nazi. Yes!
"Ha ha ha ha. Son of a b****!!!"
When Indy tells Marion "Yes, it hurts!" and the whole love scene...
When Katanga and crew are unable to find Indy, then he is seen climbing up on to the sub. - I LOVE that part, the crowd cheering, and the wonderful heroic Indy theme playing in the background! :D
Indy knocks out a Nazi, puts on his jacket and realises it's the wrong one. As he has realised this, a Nazi starts shouting at him in German. I just love the different expressions on Indy's face and you know that Indy's not gonna stand for that any longer...
The part where he hugs Marion. He has got the most wonderful look on his face *sigh*
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indy getting an idea to jump out of a plane, using only a rubber raft! very Indyesque!
The whole love scene, especially the part where Indy is striding around in room, oh and also the part where he bursts into Willie's room. "Oh Indy!"
When Indy kisses Willie, makes his way down into the ceremony room, approaches the Sankara Stones, and picks one up.
He has the most wonderful look on his face!
When Indy sees the Thuggee Guard whipping the slave and he throws a rock at the guard! Go Indy!
When Mola Ram is telling Indy about the Sankara Stones and that the Thuggee will be powerful once again. I love the way in which, despite his circumstances, Indy stands up to him.
When Indy puts his fedora on "Right, all of us!"
The look on Indy's face which almost says "Right, you guys are gonna be real sorry now!"
The part where Willie and Shortie are in the mine cart and Indy grabs hold of a rope and joins them.
"We've got company!"
When Indy comes across two sword welding Thuggee guards and he fights them, runs after one of them and runs the other way, chased by several guards!
On the bridge when Willie says "Omigod, omigod!" Indy just gives her a look of "I'm quite serious." That's just so typical of him!
Just after Mola Ram falls to his death. Willie and Short Round are worried about Indy and then a hand appears and it is our beloved archaologist - with the last Sankara Stone!
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
When Indy is on Coronado's ship on The Portuguese Coast. His general 'don't give a damn' attitude, despite the fact that the odds are not good.
In the catacombs with Elsa. The part where they have found the shield, being the second marker. The look of enthusiams on Indy's face is fantastic, and I love the way in which he immediately springs into action in the scene following this, and also when he says "Ah, Venice" in his usual nonchalant way.
"Nazi's. I hate these guys."
When Indy opens the window and is just about to whip swing to the other side. "This is kids stuff. I'll be right back."
Just after Indy falls down the stone staircase and he's trying to figure out what to do next, he gives this little lop-sided smile. Perfect!
The scene where Indy runs across the beach checks his webley, and realises that he's out of bullets.
When Indy asks Sallah "Where's my father?"
The part where he unfurls his whip and catches Henry by the ankle "Hang on dad!"
When Indy's hat comes back. The look on his face is priceless!
Henry "Indiana, Indiana. Let it go." - Indy looks so vulnerable there which is a large part of his character.
The part where Henry states that Marcus once got lost in his own museum and Indy replies "Uh-huh". There's just something about the way he says that. I love it!
Apologies for the 'essay' once again. :D

For me it's the scene in Raiders in the school library with the government agents. It's one of my favorite scenes in the whole film.

00Kevin, Canyon...with all respect intended, and I do love you both, I don't think it counts when the whole script is listed as your favorite respective scenes. If it does, I have a lot more typing to do.

When I think of Indiana Jones the scene that immediately runs through my head is the scene in 'The Temple Of Doom' when we see Indy in his signature garb for the first time again. I don't know why, but Indy emerging from the back room of the Tri-Motor plane, once again wearing his slept-in, adventured-in jacket and hat just yells 'Indiana Jones' to me. Willie's "lion tamer" comment and Indy's reaction to it caps the scene nicely.

How about the very first scene in Raiders, where Indy comes out of the shadows, just for a moment, only to Venture back into "his" cave?
(BTW, where is Venture)

Not as long as I have this . . .
Pulls out a golden pen. Now no one will be able to write as much as me. Hahahah :D
And now Canyon to be serious for a moment and just a moment.;) I think you summed up the whole reason and idea behind the character of Indiana Jones. Brave, heroic, gets along good with women, and seems to have an impeccable way of not dieing. I think that'd be an A+ in anyone's book.
To me at least my favorite moment in the Indy Trilogy is in (believe it or not) Temple of Doom. The part where Indy is about to be flattened by that rock-crusher and Shorty is reaching for the Indy voodoo doll. And the music becomes high pitched reaching a climax. Then you hear Dum...dum...dum…dum!!!
And Indy leaps up almost as if coming back to life and smashes the big thugy in the face. Ah, those are the good old times in Indy lore indeed.
