The Oscar Nominations are out, so make your picks now.

Here's the link to the list of nominees:

http://www.oscar.com/nominees/nomineelist.html

Here's my first impression picks:

Lead Actor -- Sean Penn, Mystic River

Best Supporting Actor -- Ken Watanabe, Last Samurai (although Tim Robbins was fantastic in Mystic River and is the presumed favorite)

Lead Actress -- [split] either Diane Keaton, Somethings Gotta Give or Charlize Theron, Monster. [I have yet to see either picture.]

Supporting Actress -- wide open, I have to yet to see some of the pictures]

Art Direction -- The Last Samurai

Cinematography -- Master and Commander

Costume Design -- The Last Samurai (Although Pearl Earring and Seabiscuit are close -- I might change this)

Directing -- Peter Jackson, Return of the King (not so much for what he did behind the camera but what he did away from it)

Editing -- Master and Commander (X2 is perfect and got robbed here)

Music (Score) --

Music (Song) --

Best Picture -- Return of the King

Visual Effects -- Tough one: Master and Commander (although Pirates is a close second)

Writing (adapted sceenplay): Mystic River

Writing (original screenplay): Lost in Translation

Animated: Nemo
Art Direction: Last Samurai
Cinematography: Master and Commander
Costume: Last Samurai (for sheer volume) that's a bad pun

I haven't heard of, let alone seen half of those films...

Anyway, I reckon CITY OF GOD might sneak in and take the directing award, although ROTK deserves something. SEABISCUIT might get cinematography, but (sorry Ren) I don't see it taking best picture - LOST IN TRANSLATION would be my bet for that (haven't seen it though).

There's a chance theat ROTK will be snubbed for all the major awards cos they dared to make it without Hollywood being involved, and the Oscars are biased like that...

Now, I haven't seen most of these, but still...

Actor, Ben Kingsley- I've heard good things about all of these, but I'm going with Kingsley because the part was written with him in mind (in a novel!)

Supporting Actor, Tim Robbins - sounds incredible

Actress, Charlize Theron - a great achievement

Supporting Actress, Patricia Clarkson - sounds best, and a couple of the others I don't care for that much

Animated, Finding Nemo - I didn't like the looks of Brother Bear, and this was fairly whimsical

Art Direction, Return of the King - this one is close, but I have to give it to Return of the King

Cinematography, Seabiscuit - It has that glossy Technicolor look, but kind of gritty too

Costume Design, The Last Samurai - It might as well get it, for two different costume idioms

Directing, Lost in Translation - there's an element of sentiment in choosing this over Mystic River, as a woman director is long overdue, but this film does deserve it

Documentary Feature, The Fog of War - this was a good year for documentaries, but this one really deserves it

Short Documentary, Chernobyl Heart - I have to agree with Ren, in that this needs to be known

Film Editing, Seabiscuit - this film looks impressive

Foreign Language film, The Barbarian Invasions - I've heard very good things about this one

Makeup, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - close one here, but the stylized realism wins out over the other two

Music (score), Big Fish - I've heard some of this score, and I think it deserves it

Music (song), "A kiss at the end of the Rainbow", A Mighty Wind - just because the concept sounded funny

Best Picture, Seabiscuit - because it sounded absolutely incredibly, and for Clint besides

Animated Short, Harvie Krumpet - because of the title

Live Action Short, Die Rote Jacke - same reason, I'm afraid

Sound, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - because I haven't given it anything yet and because it's probably pretty good

Sound Editing, Finding Nemo - because the sound starts from scratch

Visual effects, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - I'm afraid this one is a given

Adapted Screenplay, American Splendor - because it sounds innovative

Original Screenplay, In America - because it deserves something, and Best Supporting Actor is not it

Then we're either quite special, or quite lucky...or quite both.

He who does Laundry at the end of the month, loses Pants in the Flood

He who Messes with Kevin...dies

he who Announced his Glory, has no Glory at all

He who liked modern films over Classics, had bad taste

He who is up at this most undecent hour, is a Ravener

He who Comes up with bad Proverbs....is cool, unless his name is not Kevin

That may be true, but he can't pick the Oscars, like I can.

Interesting article on Oscar mis-picks and slights:

Not quite trying to pick the winners but still interesting. Anyone have any glaring oversights from this year's crop?
