View Full Version : What do your usernames mean?
I don't know if there's a thread like this yet or not, but I was just curious- where did everyone get their usernames? Mine, obviously, is my real name, but what about others?
Some are confusing (Ren, this means you!).

Joe Brody
02-10-2004, 09:39 PM
'Joe Brody' is one of the many hapless souls in Raymond Chandler's 'The Big Sleep'. In my opinion, Joe Brody is THE classic small-time grafter who is famously described by his girlfriend Agnes as "[a] half smart guy". He's pretty pathetic -- but he's a neat character in both the novel and the film adaptation.
While I say there is no relation to Marcus, I've wondered if Joe Brody's name was the inspiration for Marcus Brody. It seems like when characters in the Indy movies weren't being named for people's dogs, names -- like Sallah's -- were being pulled from old movies.
Shipwreck
02-10-2004, 09:47 PM
Well, my middle name is "Titanic" and during my stints in the Navy and Police Academys (2 of 'em) I was cordially referred to as "Shipwreck" hence the name. But I like it - so no worries.

There's a long story behind mine. You don't wanna hear it.
tall square
02-10-2004, 11:01 PM
Mine is a ridiculously clever reference to the famed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom character, Short Round.
Pale Horse
02-10-2004, 11:34 PM
Some say it is a Nephilistic moniker indicating that most of my work here is designed to suck the marrow of life from this board by 25%;
Some believe it to be an anagram for one who carries a promise, (though none know what the promise is);
Others think it is the semblance of a mascot who lost to the lucky charms on the first Sunday Afternoon of 2004;
Still others see it as a tribute to Val Kilmner's character in Tombstone, Doc Holliday, who helped Wyatt Earp rid the town of Tombstone of the Clanton Bros.; all while being PALE with TB;
And finaly, there are even some who see it as a back handed nod to the camel in FoA...
The point is: Pale Horse is a mystery. Only those committed to studying all that Pale Horse may represent, will truely have an understanding of who I am.

vaxer
02-11-2004, 02:04 AM
Mine comes from the time I used to play X-wing Alliance (a Starwars game) on the internet (about five years ago).
My real first name is Xavier, add it to Vader:
Xavier + Vader = vaxer
It's a lower case 'v' in order to keep the symmetrical aspect. :)

Mine is pretty self explanatory.
VP comes from my first name: Ville-Pekka Reponen.

Jonny Quest
Real-life nickname. Also explains my nationality... duh! ;)

Canyon was taken from The Canyon of the Crescent Moon, from Last Crusade, and was the film that made me an Indy fan. ;)

Hey, looking back in like '01 or somewhere in there,
Finn used to be called FinnJones (And he confirmed that to me)
And Aaron H used to be called Raider (I think) Is that right Aaron H?
Attila the Professor
02-11-2004, 08:41 PM
Mine comes from a line in Last Crusade:
Elsa: "...he was as giddy as a schoolboy."
Indy: "Who, Attila the Professor? He was never giddy, even when he was a schoolboy."
Okay, I actually am the giddy sort, fairly often...but it still suits me.

hmmm, in all this time I never heard that about Aaron H, strange
anywho, there have been several people to change their names:
DrJones 56 - jones1899
Tequilerous - Tiger Wolf
indy's trading post - Indy A
and a few others, but I don't remember what they were called befor
and then of corse, there are those who had multiple usernames, but that's another story alltogether
How people started to call me Finn... well, that's one story no one's going to buy at the first time, so I won't bother to go in detail. All I can say is that it involves an Irish exchange student and a crate of Finnish beer.

Why, you don't want to get into that 00Kevin? :)
Oh, Westford, why don't you finish that story? I'm anxious to see what she's like. ;)
Yes, 00Kevin, I was looking back, and Aaron H said:
"Funny that Earlier in this Table "(and here he accidently said someone else)" gloated about having a better
board..." To which the operator of Indy-Web.com, (or something like that), was saying:
..."Sorry, that "The Raider" person really throws me off..."

Rumpled Fedora
02-13-2004, 03:17 PM
If you think keeping up with one Jones is exciting, try keeping up with two of them!
Harrison Ford dons his rumpled fedora for the third time as Indiana Jones, and Sean Connery joins the thrill-a-minute fun as Indy's feisty dad. Filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas make sure this father-son duo never lack for adventure. The Joneses set out to find the mystically-empowered Holy Grail - and encounter so many spectacular pursuits and narrow escapes that Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is more than the culmination of Indy's exploits. It's "the greatest adventure in film history"
From the back of my Last Crusade VHS Box.

Fun Thread!
I don't post on boards to much. I'm more of a watcher. I like meeting other Fanatics though. Mine "MADMovies" means "Me And Dad Movies" My kids and I like making little movies. We really like making Fan Films. We have made James bond, Star Wars, Tinkerbell. We live in Minnesota and all of the Grandparents live in the south so we send them videos. The movies make the video more interesting than just watching us sitting around opening christmas presents they sent and stuff like that. OK I'm babbling. We should finish "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Cave" soon

"Broomhandle" as in 1896 Broomhandle Mauser. Winston Churchill's weapon of choice.
"Davis" as in Richard Harding Davis the turn of the century writer/adventurer. Indiana Jones if he'd been real would have read about him.

Rarely have I been asked for credential, or an explination defending them. It's quite simple really.
I am a Major with the United States Army, which is just above Captian. It is a commissioned position, with the the benefits of being [O-4] All joking aside, I still have to answer to my partner, Col. Musgrove, but we all know who does the real work.
Eaton is the surname given to me at 'birth', and no it is not a back handed reference to my weight.

Mine is self explanitory lol. But for other websites I usually use the screenname Macvsog88.
My granddad fought in vietnam and this is the unit he was in. They would go behind enemy lines into Cambodia and sit on the hoch-i-men trail. When the vietcong would pass they would call in an airstrike.
88 is my birthyear
You know, that would have been a cool username to have here too, actually. In my opinion, personal username is always better than something tuned up to the subject of the board your about to join.

[Jokingly] Major is also the rank where an officer's career typically stalls -- it's a near stereotype in the Army to find the brooding major who's been passed over for attending war colleges and posts that are required for further advancement. This stereotype, I'm sure has relevance on Major Eaton -- who I am sure only gets the best reviews.

To understand my name, one first has to take as an axiom that there are infinitely many twin primes. Use a genetic algorithm to find the most ballerific such prime, and run the binary ascii representation of that number through a Burger King Big Kids Meal Decoder (circa 1997). Next start a war and take over an arbitrary Middle Eastern Nation (this will come in handy later). The solution becomes obvious. Proof left to the reader as an exercise.

"Indy, meaning Indiana Jones and 'ologist' meaning" (pauses, checks spelling) O-L-O-G-I-S-T-- meaning 'study of.' Okay, let's get back to this: Turkean Barrows near Hazelton."

Indyologist notices a guy in the front row staring amorously in her direction. He blinks revealing the words. "Love You" printed on his eyelids.
Indyologist pauses, stunned, disbelieving, and a little flattered by the attention from this attractive student in the front row. She wonders, "How was he able to print it on his eyelids by himself?" and, "What kind of guy rights love notes on his eyelids?"
The guy, who calls himself Lucky, blinks again, slower, so that Indyologist can better see the note that was indeed meant for her alone.
Their romantic reverie is interrupted when Indyologist realizes that Lucky is certainly no Harrison Ford.
;) Sorry, I could not resist the set up.
Ben Friend of Indy
06-22-2004, 03:06 PM
I picked this name when I was but a wee lad of...what, seven, eight, nine? I think it came from how I imagined stories where I went on adventures with Indy, sort of like Short Round. So I came to Indyfan, needed a name, and came up with Ben, Friend of Indy. I've kept the name over the years, with the only change being the subtraction of the comma due to not being able to use that when I register for boards.

It has no actual meaning, and was derived from nothing but my own wacked brain, although Greg took it as pervy and called me a "ho" once upon a time. The funny thing is, I only saw it that way once he basically flat-out told me....
Oh, yeah, Ben? I did the same thing at seven and eight, only it was with Star Wars (I was a serious nut at that time--I had never even heard of Indy Jones until much later).
So I guess I was Liz, friend of Chewbacca, running around in my gymnastics outfit with my dog, making friends with a stormtrooper I called Matt.
I nearly killed myself doing that, because my imagination ran a little too far into real life, and almost suffocated because--ugh, I can't going any further with this.

Well, it may surprise you lot that Violet isn't my real name (Well, this wouldn't surprise VP, BrodyIsDead, possibly Indy 123 and possibly Gilles V). Violet is a name that I picked up in my last year of high school. Apparently I reminded people of Violet Boudelaire from A Series of Unfortunate Events, because I was new that year and no one was willing to be friendly and get to know me and so I kept to myself a lot. It was also because of my intelligence and the meer concedience that my favourite colour is violet, which is considered the colour of creativity. The Indy part was just a nice little addition and I was too lazy to think of anything else and Violet Ravenwood was too long.

04-20-2006, 10:55 PM
I thought the Hovitos were wicked in Raiders, what with their poison darts and brazen nudity and all...and I always loved the line, "If they knew we were here, they would have killed us already."
Back in '01 I was arrogant enough to elect myself leader of said tribe, thus the "King" bit. No idea why I didn't use "Chief" or some other title, but I was probably under the influence of alcohol at the time.

04-21-2006, 01:12 AM
I am "Monkey" because I am ......Simian....in many ways.
I think I identify with......and probably have more in common with....my simian brothers and sisters, than with humankind.
annu is a nickname that I got at higschool because my first name is too long to shout, and there was another girl who had same name.

Wow, this thread shows its age!
Oh, how I wish there was an off-topic table!
Anyway. Originally my online persona was "BoyAdventurer"(Not here). Because I was well... a boy who aspired to be like Indiana Jones, an adventurer. After I forgot my passwords :dead: I had to make a new name that was not taken.
I felt that I should make a name that would last longer. (How long do I really want "Boy" in my name?) So I dropped "Boy" leaving "Adventurer."
Taken.
Oookay. "I" am the supposed adventurer... so "IAdventurer."
Taken.
Nuts. I am the #1 Adventurer, "IAdventurer1."
Taken.
Erm... "IAdventurer01?"
Yay! :D
And that is how I named myself. :p

Dr. Clark Savage...the grand-daddy of all pulp heroes. Man of Bronze and Adventurer Extraordinaire. I initially went by my middle name (Cain) and later by the nomenclature of Venture. I stayed away for a long time, and when I came back I re-christened myself to coincide with the new email address.

Hey Doc, good to see someone else who liked those old pulp novels. I used to know a dealer who had the entire series.
My email is DocWeeks and everyone thinks it's because I'm studying to be a doctor, so I have to explain that it's because of an old pulp character.

Oh, and also the basis of the fan fic story I won third prize for in TheRaider.net Contest back in 2005 was all built around Brody's funeral:

Well... the second half of my user name should be obvious to any George Lucas aficionado... but it's really just about my obsession with Ewan McGregor's lightsaber... :o *cough*
More obscurely.... "nez" is short for nesmith, short for Mike Nesmith of the 1960s TV series The Monkees.
Yes, I am a sad nerdy fangirl. ... but don't even think of making fun of Nez! His mom invented liquid paper and he himself is credited with inventing MTV!

When I create a username it is my desire that it reflect something that is of importance to me, that it reflect my faith, my beliefs, my family, my favorite hero, author, book or movie.
Normally you can find me on the internet under the names: SkywalkerQuest, AllSparkKnight or AnthonyQuest. I chose the name AnthonyQuest because my middle name is Anthony and Jonny Quest is one of my favorite cartoons from the distant past and because it is also my father’s favorite program from when he was a youth.
My name however on this board is RedeemedChild. Back when I was about 13 or 12 I came in contact with pornography and I’ve been enslaved to it ever since. Actually I’ve been trying to break free from it for a very, very long time. It almost seems as if it has been an eternity. True, it is addicting and you can judge me if you want. However, it’s not like I wanted to get involved in porn. See, my father used to be a professor at a university and it’s one of the most Heaven forsaken universities on all the earth. The majority of the students are as corrupt as the devil himself and that is how I came in contact with porn.
So as I said earlier, I’ve been trying to break away from it for a long time, but as is in the case of being mortal I find it hard to completely break free. Once I think I’ve outrun my past and gotten away from it that’s just when I find myself being dragged down by lust and passion again. It’s a heck of a situation to be in.
But not long ago Casting Crowns released a new song called Every Man which talks about being a sinner and finding hope in Christ. Actually they released two new songs, Every Man and East To West. When I listened to those songs on K-Love which is a radio station from out West I found peace and redemption in Jesus Christ and thus my user name RedeemedChild was born thanks to the truth of those two songs and the hidden message of all the Star Wars tales which is none other than finding Redemption. Lucas has said that The Force Unleashed will tell the story of Redemption. The padawan Maris Brood and The Secret Apprentice and his lovely pilot Juno Eclipse are supposed to find Redemption towards the end of the storyline.
Star Wars has had a major impact on my Christian life because it seems draw from the Apocolyptic pages of the Biblical book of Revelation and in which the War in Heaven between Christ and Satan rages and I’ve always sought Redemption form pornography and hope that other youth won’t get caught up in the hell that porn brings into a person’s life.

AgentZ that is the most disgusting and horrible poster art that I've ever laid eyes on in a very long time. The 2008 King Kong is the best kong in my opinion.
Actually I found the movie Might Joe Young to be very enjoyable. It's a shame Disney won't create more Mighty Joe Young movies and it's also sad it's to costly to turn MJY into a television series.
Currently Disney Channel is one of the worst channels at the moment. All Disney has is trashy junk like Hannah Montana, Cory in the House, Thats So Raven and Kim Possible on. They need to bring back stuff like Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, American Dragon Jake Long, Power Rangers Mystic Force, Atlantis The Lost Empire, Lilo & Stitch: The Series and it'd also be nice if Disney tried to improve their channel by airing stuff like Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender or Cartoon Network's Ben10.
Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon are far better than the Disney Channel in my opinion.

Well, I do hope you agree with what I said regarding the Disney Channel. Disney Channel has just become of a station of garbage.
For instance look at the programming they've got.
Cory In The House
Phineas and Ferb
Hannah Montana
Camp Rock
Living The Dream
Thats So Raven
As The Bell Rings
Shaun The Sheep
Life With Derek
Brandy and Mr. Whiskers
Okay, now if people don't agree that stuff is PLAIN garbage then I must declare that Doomsday is immanent. Disney at one time had some fairly good shows but they've gone insane.
Please Disney bring back stuff like Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior and American Dragon Jake Long. It's also be nice if Disney had an animated Pirates of the Caribbean show.

Well I wouldn't have anything to base my agreement on... I don't watch the Disney Channel. I used to, but I stopped after House of Mouse got cancelled. :( Plus they stopped playing "Disney's Halloween Treat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZToKkMY1JDY)" every year and that made me SO ANGRY because it was the exact same year that I decided I'd better go ahead and tape it so I'd have it forever.

I'm so sorry nezobiwan, that is really unfortunate. My family and I have experienced similar problems with other stations when we prepare to record programs from television so I can relate with you on that one. Have you ever tried to get it from your local library? They might have it on VHS.

Oh, no, no, no...I also deeply love Kong '76, but for very different reasons. I think the only way a person, and a Kong fan no less, can truly enjoy that movie is if they think of it as a comedy, a spoof, a farce. Then people won't hate it as much. That's what I've done, and I found that it makes the movie experience much funner and enjoyable. I don't mind the outrageous changes (NO DINOSAURS!!! HOW ****ING DARE THEY!!! YOU BASTARDS!!!) and cheese factor, because I watch it in a humorous state-of-mind. I take no offense, because I recognize it as a very different animal (NPI) and it is unfare to compare it.
The movie is lambasted because it wanted to be funny and likable, and Lange wasn't even that bad! The "chauvinist pig-ape" line was not bad acting or writing: it was meant to show that Dwan was in panic and hysterical, and was babbling. I recommend a very, very, very, very, very good book called King Kong: From Fay Wray to Peter Jackson, which covers the making of every major Kong version thus far, and it sheds a lot of light on the 76 film. The author is a very reasonable dude who has a very logical evaluation of the movie, which helped me get over my biases after the guy's review. Highly Recommended for Kong lovers and haters.

1138 - Any SW geek should know this one.... Still don't know? GL's first movie was THX 1138 and that number appears in every SW film (well, I'm not sure where it is in Return of the Jedi but it's in the rest of them :p)
I gather you've changed your handle since that old post?
Serious, heavy-duty SW geeks know "1138" can be found on the side of Leia's helmet in her disguise as bounty hunter Boushh. The really serious Lucas geeks know the whole name THX 1138 came from one of the young George Lucas's early San Francisco telephone numbers, 849-1138 (849=THX).
:whip:
I meant to type "indyfan101" but my finger slipped and hit the "i". Thus made indifan101!:D
I named my first Mac the same way. While experimenting with various temporary names on my way to finding something I liked for permanent use, I had intended to go through various names associated with bots, droids, automata, etc. (because it's a computer, naturally enough), and after using "Artoo" or "Tom Servo" or some such thing for a while I started to retype the hard drive's name (and by extension, what I called the whole machine) as "Maria" in reference to Metropolis, but my fingers slipped while typing. Before correcting it I noticed what it said, and smiled - the "a" on the standard keyboard is right next to the "s," and I had typed "Maris." Loving the show Frasier, I just thought it was cool to have typed that name by accident, so I kept it, and that remained as the name of my first Mac.
Later, when I got a new primary system, I briefly considered various names, and one of the obvious, natural names for a new machine to go with my existing one would be "Daphne." I initially dismissed it, considering it too obvious, but someone in my gaming clan pointed out how perfect it would be as a "successor" name - since my newer, faster Mac, just as with Niles Crane's loves, would be "younger, prettier and more fun than the original." :D Daphne it was, then, and Daphne is still my primary computer today.
AgentZ that is the most disgusting and horrible poster art that I've ever laid eyes on in a very long time.
You really think so? Heh. FWIW, that poster is one of the most well-known and highly-regarded one-sheets ever; that Berkey painting is widely considered a classic, even though the movie itself is generally deemed a lesser take on the Kong legend.
Different strokes, and all that...
