I really have to wonder how different Raiders and the whole trilogy would've been if Selleck had been cast as Indy. I think Sean Young could've made a really good Marion but I'm glad they went with Karen Allen in the end, she played her so well.

And I'm not really a Tom Selleck fan but I thought he did pretty well in his screen test. You?

I think if there had to have been another Indy other than Ford, Selleck could have pulled it off. Even if he had that mustache (I hope they'd have taken it off though).

I think he should have been given the part of 'Fedora.' Afterall, he was the first choice for the man with the hat, so why didn't he get to be the unnamed man with the hat in LC?

I can't comment on Sean Young because I have no clue who that is. I like Marion the way she is, though.

I think Tom Selleck is a good actor...
I'm sure he'd been good, if it would have been him that played Indy.
But Ford is better and I'm glad he ended up with the part.

Ayrun, I think we all are happy Magnum PI's contract made Selleck loose the part. When I think of Harrison Ford, I think of Indiana Jones and I always will (that's saying something since Star Wars is my favorite movie ;))

But then again, this nearly unknown actor adds even more mystery around the character who gave Indy the first push that sent him down the road leading to be the man he became.

IIRC, Sean Young plays Tyrell's secretary in Blade Runner... other than that I don't know what she's been in.

[Edit: Thanks to Finn for the link. It seems she played Chani in Lynch's "Dune" as well. Never noticed that before.]

Minor roles and B-movies. Her face is pretty though.

They would probably have been alright, but its hard now (twenty years later) to imagine anyone else in those roles.

Obviously different actors would change the faces of the characters, but I wonder what else would have been different? Various ad libs and actor input could have sent the movie in an entirely different direction.

Why? I mean.. not all hero's have one… that big. ;)

Sean Young definitely could have pulled off the Marion role well.

Tom, although I like him, I don't think it would have worked. He had too much baggage at the time from his fame in Magnum and I don't think he could have pulled off the same intensity that Ford displayed in the role.

If you want to know how Selleck would have done as Indy in Raiders... watch a movie called The High Road to China.

Finn,

Was The High Road to China any good? I've only seen one scene where Selleck is a little less-than-convincing working a Lewis gun.

I think Ms. Young also would have been a good pick to play Marion, too. Her face fits the character well. And she IS pretty...

The High Road to China was an interesting watch. It was clearly made after the same fashion as Raiders, you know, the hero ending up from tight spot to another with not much slow pace inbetween... but it lacks the tension Raiders has (but thank goodness there is at least some). And the film's end is something of an anti-climax, being far from the effective conclusion it was supposed to be... to me, they never even appeared to be in real danger, even if the flick tried to claim otherwise.

The acting was somewhere between decent and slightly below average. Selleck was one of the best around, in fact... but still a lightyear from Harrison Ford. Jack Weston, the guy who plays the hero's mechanist-sidekick did an usual routine comical relief-role. Bess Armstrong, the female lead... she was bad, or at least baddish. Her role was supposed to be tomboyish (and it was), but it was done pretty badly and managed nothing but to annoy me for most of the time. She had her moments though.

It is more or less a traditional adventure movie, and despite some flaws... it manages to be decent. If you had this movie, and a bunch of lately-made adventure flicks like The Mummy, LXG, Van Helsing and such in a pile you could grab one along, I'd recommend you to pick China.

Some said they don't make movies like this anymore. It is true, despite not being the brightest star on the sky, The High Road to China is worth that 1 h 45 min it lasts.

And as an extra treat, if you gamers out there are interested to try out an old-fashioned adventure that pretty much walks hand in hand with this movie, I recommend you to try out Heart of China (http://www.jorkki.com/apaja/download.php?id=1041696191). It's an adventure game, telling the story of a hotshot WW I pilot going in search for a lost business tycoon's daughter, visiting locales like Hong Kong, Nepal and Istanbul. It's complete freeware, so there won't be any feds knocking on your door.

I'd like to see Tom Selleck in Indy 4. He could play a rival relic hunter who is after the same artifact as Indy. Heck they could even have them fighting over the leading lady. :D

That was one of the (unofficial) rumors spreading around before the (official) postpone.

If you REALLY would like to see how Selleck would have done as Indy, try to catch the Magnum P.I. episode titled "Legend of the Lost Art." It's a parody of Raiders where Selleck is forced to wear the Indy outfit (see picture on first page of this thread). During the show, Magnum travels through a cave filled with booby traps, gets lowered into a "tomb" filled with snakes, and even fights in a bar. Some of the one-liners are hilarious because they are pretty much making light of the trilogy. I laugh every time I hear Magnum say "Lost Ark" instead of "Lost Art" and gets corrected.

She also wanted the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns that eventually went to Michelle Pfieffer. She wasn't too happy about that.

I doubt there would've been that much baggage as Magnum P.I. had just began airing around the time Raiders of the Lost Ark was being filmed.

Still, I'm glad that Harrison Ford ended up with the role. :)
