I just want to say a few words here about a wonderful lady.
Lady Margaret Thatcher...The Iron Lady.
She's one of my heroes.
This great woman, despite her failing health, despite her doctors' warnings, traveled all the way to America to honor her friend Ronald Reagan.
What a wonderful speech she made at the funeral ceremony!
Not only did she travel across the Atlantic to Washington DC, she traveled all the way to California, to accompany her friend and fellow great world leader to his final resting place in the California sun set.
God Bless Margaret Thatcher!
I hope that it will be many many many years until her funeral, but when it comes, I hope that the British people, and the people of the world, will honor her the way that we have honored Ronald Reagan.

I doubt if many British people would agree with your assessment of Maggie Thatcher the Milk Snatcher...

Westford, I am curious; how, why, and when did Margaret Thatcher snatch your milk??
Sorry, but that one went right over my head. I know I'm just a dumb Yank, but further explanation would be interesting for me.
Thanks,

Kids used to get free milk at school (to make sure they got enough calcium, etc, in their diets). Thatcher put an end to that in her first month in office, and became known as the Milk Snatcher.
The Iron Lady nickname came from a Russian newspaper after she declared that Russians were "bent on world dominance" and that they "put guns before butter".
Under her leadership, Britain's economy went into a severe recession and there was a sharp rise in unemployment. When she tried to reduce the power of trade unions, there were widespread strikes, including the coal miners' strike which lasted a whole year. She also allowed the USA to keep nuclear missiles in Britain (not popular with the CND). Then of course, she came up with the idea of Poll Tax, testing it out in Scotland before introducing it to the rest of the UK - there were protest marches and riots because of this.
A couple of years ago, a guy went into the House of Commons and cut the head off a statue of her - that might give you an idea of how many people view her here in Britain. Having said that, she was a strong leader, and the first (and only so far) female PM, so people have a sort of respect for her, in spite of maybe not liking her.

Thanks Westford, I didn't realize that many British people didn't/don't like her.
The other day I heard a very different assesment, by a Briton, of her accomplishments while in office. So it is very interesting and enlightening to hear the other side of the coin.
All I can say is that Margaret Thatcher is very much respected, and fondly remembered here in Americaca, and she can certainly take some of the credit for bringing down the Soviet Empire, and the Berlin Wall.
But I do appreciate your enlightening post.
Thanks

. . .and Argentina will think twice before they ever mess with anyone again . . . .
[Good summary Westford. Some of the best commentary on her while she was in office was published in 'Marxism Today'. You could do worse things with a free afternoon than go through a stack of back issues from the early '80's -- although toward the end of it's publication, I think the magazine swung around and became pretty pro-Thatcher. I mostly read the magazine for the architecture and culture articles.]

It is alive and well in the Institutions of Higher Eduction here on the Pacific side of the U.S., not to mention it is currently in practice at several of the world Premiere amusement destinations. A recent trip to San Francisco with my girlfriend to a prominant sociology convention demonstrated it to me, I saw it with my own eyes.

[Jokingly] Well it goes without saying that Marxism is still alive in academia.
Your references to Marxism being alive in "Premiere amusement destinations" and at the sociology convention sound interesting. What's going on here? Sounds like a couple of good stories.

That's True... We've got a drunken general in our presidential chair at that time, but Margaret Thatcher is hardly a Lady. Her loyalty towards terrorist dictators like Pinochet speaks against her. :dead:

Her loyalty towards terrorist dictators like Pinochet speaks against her. :dead: Reminds me of a quote from the movie "The Professionals".when told he "was not a gentleman" one of the heros (Lee Marvin, playing an ex U S Army officer) replies "Only by act of Congress". He gets some good lines in that film. On being called a "bastard" his reply is : "In my case and accident of birth. You, however are a self made man !"

As an Englishman (as opposed to an Austrian!:p ) I had a good laugh at this thread.
That's all I'm gonna say about our dear Baroness. ;-)
