View Full Version : The 2 Sides of Indy

After those exciting, intense scenes in South America in Raiders which then faded into Indy teaching at Marshall College, did you believe at first that Indy the "scholarly teacher" and Indy the "rogue adventurer" were the one and the same person? When did you figure out they were the same? What was your reaction?

Don't I ask good, juicy questions?! :D

In fact, I didnt think that they were they same. I figured it out when Marcuse Brody and Indy started talking about how Indy had had it in his hand.

Good Thread Question. ;)

Well they did have the same face....

Once again, I was too young to really remember. In fact, I disliked Raiders when I was younger because all he was doing after the Peru scene was teach and talk and blah blah blah.

Cut me some slack, I was 4 or 5 and had a short attention span :p

actually my parents now tell me I was 2 when I saw my first Jones film and it wasn't raiders it was LC. That's okay.

The talking points in raiders were a drag when I was little. But once I saw the ark picture i'd pull out one of our bibles and lookmat a similar picture with Indy. And because I was going to Bible school every sunday I loved hearing my hero say "Didn't you guys ever go to bible school?"

I knew right away! I was a big Star Wars fan back then so I could tell Harrison Ford's face anywhere.

Well, I knew. It's not hard to recgonize his face. However, recently, I was trying to convert the little children, to Indyism and they all thought Harrison was in costume, pretending to be somebody else when he was teaching. What can I say...times change...

Of course, they were the same man so to speak it was not a shock that big... but I truly was not expecting a scene like that after the plane flew off into the sunset.

Finn! :D When you said this, you reminded me of Indy's arrogant side: "Knock it off-- you LIKE the way I do things!" LOL!

When I saw Indy teaching, I'm pretty sure I thought "This geeky guy is the same one from the last scene? Whoa-- I can't believe it!"

Never once did I think they were two diffrent people.

I don't really see how you could. I mean they look the same and talk the same. They are in 2 different environments however Indy says "I had It Marcus...I had it in my hand" and he's obviously talking about the idol.

I must admit I never did, but I can understand why someone young might so...

When did you first see Indy, Indyologist?

I first saw Indy when Raiders came out in 1981.

True, Main Man, true. But to see a adventurous guy in leather and a hat and then to see another geeky-looking guy in a tweed suit in glasses is totally opposite on the spectrum. It fooled me (and some other people, I imagine) into thinking (BRIEFLY) that they were 2 different men. I think Spielburg did it on purpose to show 2 sides of Indy's character in a Superman-kinda way.

i knew scholar indy and adventurer indy were the same person... but for the longest time (when i was roughly the age of 6 or 7 maybe) i thought donovan and marcus were the same person

in fact id shout "shut up you traitor" whenever marcus would yell "indy you must hurry... come quickly" in the grail temple

lol how i thought this is beyond me now... as clearly donovan and marcus are on screen at the same time in some shots but i distinctly remember going "hey... wait a minute..." one day

ahhh... ...im a moron *shakes head in disbelief*

Its really a contrast, isn't it? I think the general intent is to throw off the audience, and make believe the character isn't all what he seems to be, and what you thought he was was always the truth. But wait, he also appears to be a alchoholic, doesn't he? How interesting would it have been, if, for instance, he was just a tomb raider?

What makes you think Indy is an alcoholic?

They are two distinct facets of the same person which, on occasion, cross paths.

This is from the an onlie alcoholic test program:

Consider his drinking in Cario:

Is drinking affecting your reputation?
Do you drink to escape from worries or trouble?
Do you drink alone?

In the blimb?

Do you drink because you are shy with other people?
Do you drink to build up your self-confidence?

Just observations, really.

It’s funny when people get preachy about drinking in a forum named after a fictional bar.

I don’t make excuses for my drinking anymore… I just admit that I like to drink once in a while. It’s much easier and I don’t have try so hard to remember the lies I told the last time I was loaded.

[I have to add though as a Public Service Announcement… that drinking is only good and fun in moderation. Drinking to get sick isn’t any fun at all and hearing lectures about your “problem” is made worse with a hang-over. Kids… don’t drink like I did when I was your age.]

Does he?? For me he looks like a Professor, why are you so critical in a negative way towards Indy it doesn't really seem that you like Indy films or anything related to him? or do you post this kind of stuff to read posts as mine to see how we react as an opposite way from your views and then you laugh? like ah those are silly they take me seriously and I'm just mocking them!
