View Full Version : Best moment in The Last Crusade

I think the best moment in TLC is when Indy has to choose life or death when he hangs over the cliff after Elsa fell down in the abyss. Or the ending scenes when they riding away in the dusk.

I think I liked the motor chase the best.. right up until the moment were his father slaps him in the face. ;)

But then again.. I liked almost all of the 'father-son' moments.

My best TLC moments are the chasing boats in Venice, when Indy finds his father and hits Indy with the vase...the challenges Indy has to pass to get the Grail, those moments are simply GREAT!
I love the fantastic chemistry and fun moments with Indy and Jones Senior a lot.

The entire motorcycle chase... that was awesome. Again, especially when Indy is laughing and he looks at his dad, who is giving him a stern look, and Indy looks back towards the camera and his smile just faaaaades away...

Also, the entire tank chase and the scene before it. It's so funny watching Indy try to save his dad and Marcus, and meanwhile, Dad and Marcus are in there messing around.

M "Henry! The pen!"
H "What?"
M "Don't you see? The pen, is mightier, than the sword!"

M "Look what you did!"
H "It's war!"

For me the best scene is Indy attempting the leap of God and recovering the Grail

My favorite parts from Last Crusade have to be from when Indy and his father talk about their relationship: "If you'd been an ordianary, average father like the other guys dads..." and including the scene where Henry runs across the beach scaring the seagulls away...
"Let my armies be the rocks and the trees and the birds in the sky..."

For me, there are two :

- the rescue/ introduction of Henry Sr.

- the classic tank fight

Without a doubt it's the first shot after the prologue when Indy looks up in the storm on the Coronado and takes that punch.

- Indy's use of a fake Scottish accent and a terrible head cold (ACHOO!!) to enter the castle and save his dad, this scene was hilarious
-When Indy climbs up from the cliff while everyone thinks he's dead, and then his dad sees him and they hug, and then.....INDY'S HAT BLOWS BACK! This is my favorite scene, it really moves me for some reason.

I have to say first of all after Indy kills the nazis asking for his diary and Henry says "look what you did?!"

then of course Marcus being knocked off the tank (i've mentioned that before)

-when Sr. goes "Indiana... Let Go." *sniff*
-the motorcycle thing is finished and Indy smiles but his dad doesnt...HAHAHA
-when indy shoots all those guards and Sr. say "Look What You Did!"

Sctualy, there seems to be a lot of GREAT scenes in LC!:D:D:D

My favorite moment has got to be the scene where Indy's dad is hanging on to Indy who is dangling over the pit. Elsa has just gone the way of all bad guys (or girls for that matter) and Indy finds himself in the same predicament. Frankly, I was a little aggrevated when some people in the audience laughed at this. The only thing that was funny was the irony. It was supposed to be a dramatic moment!!!

Anyhoo, I just love that whole "Indiana... Indiana... let it go" moment between Indy and his dad. It gets me every time. I like how they kind of suggest that Indy has the same obession with items of history, but unlike Ilsa, it hasn't taken over to the point where he is consumed by a deadly greed.

I think they had great fun working together,

the scene when they are both tied up together in front of the fire.
Its not what they say, but how they both act together playing off one another.

Makes me smile whenever I see it.

When I was little My dad would flip the couch over. I had this goblet like thing that I ran around with and i'd sustainmyself from the couch. The my dad would say "Indiana.....let it go" and then pull me up.

As for Indy catching elsa, I never saw that as funny at all. strange....

I love the seen where Indy is saving his dad from Castle Bruchenwald. The whole seen is awesome. From when he sneaks in to the motorcycle scene.

I really like when they argue about the diary in front of the nazis, Indy grabs a MP-40, shoots the nazis and says "DON"T CALL ME JUNIOR."

There are plenty of great moments in this one but I still love the scene where Indy 'bumps' into Hitler at the rally. I wasn't expecting that at all...

My favourite scenes in LC are:

-when Henry hits Jr.'s head with vase
-when Henry and Jr. argued about the diary and Jr. took the gun and shot the nazis...actually whole casttle scene is great!
-tank scene
-the scene when Sallah asks about Indy's name.
Henry "Indiana was our dog's name"

Disclaimer: I know some of the below quotes are wrong. I tried from memory but seeing as I sold (I'm kicking myself!) my Indy VHSs and haven't watched any in a good month, my memory is rusty. Please forgive me and feel free to provide the correct wording.

Henryisms.

H- Son...I've got something to tell you.
I- Don't get sentimental on me now Dad.
H-...The floor is on fire (WHA) AND the chair!

I- HOW, did you know...she was a Nazi.
H- She talks in her sleep.
I- *huh double take*
H- *sheepish grin*

I- I'm alright Dad.
H- Thank God...It's fake.

M- Look what you Did!
H- It's WAR Marcus!

H- Those people are trying to kill us.
I- I Know Dad!
H- it's a new experience for me!
I- Happens to me all the time.

I- NO! Wer're not taking the boat! I've got something better than boats.
H- What about the boat!

I- Come on dad.

I- Dad, are we hit!
H- Sorry son...they got us.

I- This is gonna be close!
H- They don't come any closer than that!
*psheeeeeeeew* *boooooom!!!*

All during the motorcycle chase, esp. at the end when Indy grins and his dad gives him that look.

Oh yeah, you can't leave out the best one! Take a look at my sig.

Also, my favorite non-Henry moment- probably when Indy meets Hitler. The three tasks is pretty good also, as is choosing the Grail and the Knight's dialogues.

I can't stand that! I cringe every time, and want to loose Indy's hands where he can just pull back and punch her. :)

I like the "I thought I'd lost you, boy"

If you're going to be kissing someone g-bye, you should make it long, slow and leave a little of yourself behind in the process, I always say. That way they will always feel as though they have a bit of you to take with them when they go. ;)

TLC was my favorite of all the Indy movies. I have soooo many favorite scenes

-When he recieves the fedora and the shot changes to 'grown up' Indy and he takes the punch

-When Indy and Elsa are walking through the catacombs and Indy says "Oh, rats" and you see all the rats and Elsa's little shreik

-When Indy opens the pothole in the middle of the street and says "Ah Venice"

-When Indy fakes the Scottish accent. "How dare he." *punch* Cracks me up everytime.

-When Indy swings in to save his father and is hit over the head with the vase.
HENRY: Oh, it breaks the heart.
INDY: And the head. You hit me, Dad!
HENRY: I'll never forgive myself-
INDY: Don't worry-I'm fine.
HENRY: Thank God!... it's fake. See, you can tell
by the cross section.

-When the nazi guy says "Dr. Jones." and they both answer him

-The end of the motor cyle chase when Indy smiles at Henry and Henry just gives him the look

-When Indy bumps into Hitler and gets an autograph

-When Indy pushes the Nazis out the blimp window and tells the passengers "No ticket." and they all flash tickets in his face

-When Shallah says "That was my brother-in-law's car." and takes the camels

-When Indy says "Shallah, I said no camels. That's 5 camels. Can't you count?"

-The tank scene-classic

-The 3 challenges. Whenever I watch this movie with people who haven't seen it I ask them to guess how Indy will pass the challenges

-The "Indiana...let it go." scene

-When Shallah laughs because Indiana was the dogs name

-And finally the ride into the sunset

Now should I do Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Temple of Doom?? ;)

The best moment of LC was the end, because it meant that the worse of the films is finally (painfully) over.

I can remember leaveing the movie back in 1989 and thinking to my self "What was that!" it was like Lucas and Spielberg dident even try to make an original "Indy movie" When Raiders came out it was like nothing we had seen before and then thay gave us ToD which showed us a hole other side of Indy in a very new world than that we saw in Raiders and then when 89 rolled around and brought us LC, nothing new just Raiders with a small twist.
I just hope that when Indy4 gets to the movies I dont leave the show thinking Iv seen this before like I did when I saw LC.

I have two favorite parts.
The first one is when Indy and Elsa are in the catacombs and they come to the picture of the Ark of the Covenant and the music goes to the Ark theme for a split second.
The second is when Indy has to take the leap of faith.

there are so many wonderful moments in this film, i will have to make a list of my choices :)

1. When Shallah says "Dog....you are named after the dog HA HA"
2. The Whole Tank Chase, brilliant action :)
3. Henry hitting/slapping Indy for Blasphemy
4. When Marcus say "Water no thank you fish make love in it"
5. When Henry calls Indy by his preferd name instead of Junior

well i think thats my top 5 but this film is so good its hard to choose a favourate moment really when the film is just brilliant through out like all the Indy Movies :)

Best moment in LC, let's see. I realy liked the tank chase, but then I realy liked it in the castle when Indy and "Dad" were trying to get out of the room on fire. The whole film itself was rather good (I liked ROTLA the best though.)

What? No one said this yet:
Zooming in on the look on Indy's face when he realizes the tank's about to fall off the cliff. Hat flies off... The moment where he realizes that he, too, can die, and is frozen with fear -- for a moment.

The tank battle, the motorcycle chase and of course Donovan turning into Doc Brown and the Crypt-keeper when he drank from the wrong grail.

Benraianajones
09-04-2008, 08:06 AM
When Donovan tells Indy it is time for him to decide in what he believes - and the way Indy walks towards the lion adorned huge staircase (the music scores great here too), aware he has to avoid having his head cut off.

(I actually only noticed the other day when Indy falls down the hole after standing on "J" - as he gets back out, you can see Elsa and Donovan stood under the ripsaw blades watching what letters he stands in).

When Indy and his dad hug after thinking he had died following the tank falling from the cliff (love the music score when they hug).

When Donovan ages rapidly whislt he is still half alive strangling a screaming Elsa.

Indy on the horse shooting at the tank. Again the music scores good here.

I like the Grail Knight's interaction with Indy, and of course the fissure towards the end. Also, the wonder that the knight possibly dies in the temple collapse, somewhat content the grail is no longer at risk of falling in to the wrong hands. It's sad, but triumphant.

And of course when Indy is called "Indiana" by his father, and essentially they leave ever lasting life to fall aware in to obscurity forever to enjoy what they have.

Kevin

I like the whole part where Indy must face the final challenge; when he realizes its a leap of faith the look on his face says "Oh my God I don't believe in this stuff, but what choice do I have?" Great acting, great use of music, gives me chills just thinking about it.

"You must believe, boy. You must...believe"

The best part? When it was finally over.

Actually, I liked Elsa's introduction, and I find the catacombs scene interesting, even if it does bother me to no end (seriously, the place is filled with gas AND Indy lights a torch? Who thought that was a good idea?)

Another smaller scene I like is when Elsa is at the rally and Indy finds her. I just like the exchange between the two, particularly:

Elsa: You came back for the book? Why?
Indiana Jones: My father didn't want it incinerated.
Elsa: Is that what you think of me? I believe in the Grail, not the Swastika!
Indiana Jones: You stood up to be counted with the enemies of everything the Grail stands for! Who gives a damn what you believe?
Elsa: You do!

Just the way she says "You do!" gets to me. It's really touching, actually. I think Elsa does love Indy. And of course:

Indiana Jones: All I have to do is squeeze.
Elsa: All I have to do is scream.

Decent dialogue in that scene, made Elsa a little more human, showed a darker side of Indy. I mean, we've never seen him intentionally harm a woman before (the cigarette girl was an accident). He feels betrayed, obviously, and there are probably still some romantic feelings there as well.

Don't be so harsh,
I understand you can dislike many elements too similar to Raiders, but LC has its own magic and heart.
I like it so much that I can forgive some flaws... more strong points than weak points in my opinion.

Those moments of conflict between father and son (especially the one deciding where to go), and Indy looking at Henry after the charlemagne quote and the fallen plane, are priceless.

And the dialogue is pretty clever, on top with Raiders.

- I like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade -

I'm not sure if this was sarcasm or not, but I (seriously) liked "When it was finally over." Not because it was the end, or that I didn't like the film, but the end dialogue, the riding into the sunset and the music were really great here.

That's not saying that they (other elements of mise en scene) weren't great elsewhere or in the other films, but I guess at the end of the crusade I felt a certain poignancy: father and son mend relationship, two old friends have helped on this family adventure and, well, this appeared to be the end for Indy especially with a title like LAST Crusade.

I'm glad the adventures continued, but the end of Last Crusade will always have the emotional element at it's conclusion, for me anyway.

Haha, I was being sarcastic, but I guess it didn't come across well. Last Crusade is my least favorite of the originals, but I can watch it from time to time. My friends love it, so I'll usually only watch it if one of them suggests it. I have found more things I like about it, but overall, still not wild about it.

So you didn't like the 3 challanges?

I like the idea of the three challenges. However, a couple things bothered me about them. For example, in the penitent man challenge, it's the penitent man kneels before god, not does a tuck and roll. If I were in that situation, I would be still die because I wouldn't know to roll forward, and it bothers me that Indy knew to. I do like that they show how to stop them though. I thought that was a nice touch. Also in the word of god challenge, it drives me crazy Indy falls through the floor and is able to hold onto letters that don't spell Jehovah. Of course, these types of things bother me in the other movies too, such as the light trap in the beginning of Raiders.

I'm not sure if this was sarcasm or not, but I (seriously) liked "When it was finally over." Not because it was the end, or that I didn't like the film, but the end dialogue, the riding into the sunset and the music were really great here.

I know a lot of people loved the ending of Last Crusade, but it has always left me cold. I never felt it was a good wrap up to the trilogy. But, like I said, I'm not really much of a fan of the rest of the movie.
