Ok guy's and gal's...Lets see the numbers. What do you own on DVD or VHS? Widescreen or Fullsceen...maybe both!
I personally have Widescreen, I have to know that I am seeing the whole picture...someday I need a Widescreen TV.

I have the vhs fullscreen version and the widescreen version on dvd.
Widescreen DVD.
On the laptop or the small TV (whose screen is hardly any larger than that of the computer).

VHS fs, DVD ws. I wanted to wait until I had a bigger screen, but my giflriend insisted.
Who am I to complain? Hooked it all up to my stereo system...it's really strange when Indy's only six inches tall but you can hear everything surrounding you as if you were there.
It's funny - despite the fact the TV screen is not exactly big one, one still prefers WS any time s/he just is able to. I for one, am one of the sort who's never got distracted by those black areas above and below the screen.
I used to get distracted by those black areas all the time--I hated DVDs becauses of that... but then... after a while I got used to it... and now I just get widescreen out of habit.

Widescreen all the way. I used to feel sorry for the retards who insist on Pan-And-Scam. Then I realized they're not too bright, paying full price for only 2/3rds the movie.
Ren, for this once... Amen.
I have been a fan of Indy since Raiders first came out. I must have seen it 8 times in the movie theaters. I only recently bought a DVD player. A friend lent me her FS box set. We watched all the movies this weekend. It was my 8 year old son's first exposure to the series. He is a big fan now. I definitely will be getting my own box set. I have been trying to decide between FS and WS. The FS was enjoyable, but I couldn't help wondering what the WS would be like. Obviously, the WS would give the image most like the original movie. It seems that most people here also favor WS, so it looks like I will be looking for the WS version. Funny that Wal-Mart only has the FS version. I wonder which version sells the most.

Wal-Martians (The Execs who run the stores) are pretty stupid people who don't know better. You could explain to them why the sky is actually green and half would believe it, while the other half wouldn't believe it only because they're too stuborn to beleive anything that contridicts what they learned before they earned their 8th Grade Deploma.
If everyone was buying poison and drinkng it, would that make it right?

I get all things on Widescreen but have no WS TV... yet.
Funny story. My sister got me the Matrix 2 on DVD but the FS edition. I returned it just to get the WS version.

I always get widescreen, because I want to see the whole picture. I once saw a show that compared fullscreen to widescreen. If the cinematography is good, you're going to miss something in fullscreen, because they use the whole movie screen.
Does anyone have any examples of what one misses when watching fullscreen vs widescreen?
I originally watched Raiders of the Lost Ark on fullscreen VHS. In the bar scene with Belloq after Marion is "killed" I never saw them handing around the guns until I got widescreen. That action takes place around the edges and most of got cut off in the fullscreen version.

That would be annoying...doesn't it just eat you away?

Johan... people don't care. They just want the picture to fit their screen. They would rather miss out on something in the movie then "not get their money's worth" on there televisions.
If people are still willing to make stupid mistakes after you give them all the facts, screw 'em.

There's a German smoking a cigarrette when Indy and Sallah are making their way to or from (I forget which) the map room to the left that I don't think you see with FS. Little things like that and the gun exchange are really neat things that make an old classic seem new and exciting.

I love widescreen, and it bothers when chain stores like Best Buy and Walmart make it hard for consumers to purchase widescreen products. It seems that Best Buy always puts the Full Screen editions of hot new releases in more accessible areas of their stores--right out in the open--but you have to go digging for the widescreen. If I had my way, there would be a total ban on Full Screen editions.
Funny how the thing is in the US.
I'll just have to note out now, that 90% of the DVDs we even have available here in Finland are WS.

At the video store, it's hard to find FS edition stuff. They only get WS. I don't complain.
Target has both; Wal-Mart seems to favor FS, and I only get video games at Best Buy, not movies.

I buy everything widescreen if it is available. Full screen edits everything so it's like a waste.
My TV is designed for widescreen so I never see the letterbox.

Full-screen vhs - was a present from my bro, so his choice.
Wide-screen dvd - what Play.com sent me, so their choice.

If you don't care about 15 to 20% of the shot not being visible then it won't matter to you either way. Whether you notice it or not thats about how much your missing, nothing that would affect you watching the movie of course, some just prefer seeing it as close to the original as possible.
Also, if you have a large TV like I do then the bars on top and bottom of the screen in a widescreen version aren't a factor at all. I tell friends with tiny TVs to go full screen but try to convince them to get a bigger TV instead. :)
As you probably guessed, with me its widescreen or nothing!

Full Screen is like going out, buying a masterpiece painting and then cutting it so it will fit a $20 frame you bought.

God.... now I REALLY feel like an idiot :( :D
Full screen is a bit like those Readers' digest shortened quality novels. Sure, they tell you all you need to know about the book, but there is a whole lot of things you're going to miss.

As has been said a million times by those in the know, widescreen is everything the filmmaker shot, and wants you to see. Fullscreen (or "Pan and Scan") is more of less. If you know what I mean...
The best way to realize how much better widescreen is would be to watch a 1950s movie in "Cinemascope" and watch a scene that features a conversation between two people. Usually one of the people is missing from the picture, or you get the feeling that you're sitting too close to the screen.

I was going to verbally abuse you... but since it was a mistake you get a free pass.
Gee... guess what I said.
This has been discussed before.... but Sam has forgotten it.
Actually it's gone in all, since the DVD table is gone.
No, the posts on the DVD table were moved to the Indy Misc. table.

Full screen is like listening to a Mozart symphony but missing every third note.
Except with old movies that used fullscreen.

Imagine cropping a classic movie in the original Aspect ratio just to format your widescreen TV. THAT is just as stupid.

dvd - ws
vhs - ws
i cant stand watching fs movies. it really buggs me and keeps me from enjoing a movie when i see it in fs when i know (and its clear) that is suposed to be ws + it fucks up the cinematography.

True...this does need to be mentioned.
When we all refer to widescreen, it's really just short for "original aspect ratio." When we speak of fullscreen, we really mean the practice of "panning & scanning."

Widescreen all the way! I got both the DVD's and Video's on Widescreen. Never understood why some people prefer fullscreen.
