Is there anyone else here who has a phobia?

For me its spiders and as far back as I can remember I have always had a phobia of these eight-legged creatures. :(

How about you?

Thanks to a traumatic experience as a kid, I have shaking fear of bees and wasps. I've slowly gotten better at it, but I still rue the day I have to encounter a swarm.

It kinda helped, I guess, that a friend of mine is a beekeeper.

I have been stung three times on three separate occasions but don't really have a phobia of them as such.

My parents told me I used to pet bumblebees. I think the entire thing was sort of a feeling of betrayal.

But I guess that's what you get.

"Snakes, why'd it have to be snakes"

"I hate snakes Joch, I hate em."

I have a phobia of snakes. I know, I know, You all think im just sayin that but I really hate the big ones. I can handle garter snakes, but not much else. I also dont like spiders, they are freakin freaky.

This might sound cocky but I cant say I'm afraid of anything.
I dont see a reason for it.
If you are carefull you dont have to be afraid.
For example.
You know snakes can be dangerous. So handle them with care.
If you see everything as a new, interesting and exiting experience there is no reason to be afraid.

I forgot to say that when I was on a two week jungle trip in Vietnam I got a snake bite.
We were in the jungle for ten days and I lost my focus and didnt see the snake at my feet.
They had to carry me out of the jungle.
It was a close call, but I'm still not afraid of snakes.
I just learned from it.

Large bodies of Water; oceans, lakes, and really large swimming pools.
Almost drowned as a kid, and later when I tried facing my fear by swimming in the ocean, I got caught in a rip tide and was swept down beach about two miles...that ruined it for me.

Yes, horses...I'm afraid of them too. Yet another tragic story.
In short, I was almost killed by one. Escaped with a busted scalp and a severe concusion.

My personal hell would be having to ride horses along the sea shore with 30ft waves crashing in around me.

I have acrophobia (fear of heights), but that doesn't stop me from going on roller-coasters and airplanes. I also have a minor phobia of spiders. My traumatizing experience with acrophobia was on a ferris wheel when I was about ten. It was VERY tall, and with my luck, I was stuck on the top.

Spiders are the only things that really do me in, so to speak. I just hate the whole idea of them. For awhile it was sharks, and for all intents and purposes, I still have a fear of sharks, but not like I used to. Now it is more of a reverential respect bordering on fear, but since the "Summer of the Shark" three years ago, I've actually learned to dig them in a weird way. There were a lot of magazine articles that summer explaining sharks and their behavior, and I can honestly say I'm not as afraid of them as I used to be. They're actually pretty cool.

OK, here comes my big opening up to the Indy community moment--takes a deep breath--that summer, I went to St. Thomas for a family reunion. The plane flight home was bad--REAL bad, lots of turbulance. I don't mind take offs, I don't mind landings, it's the whole staying up there part that bothers me.

Well, like I said, there was a lot of turbulance. So much so, that I was extremely tense the whole flight.

That was stupid on my part, because when I got home, I ended up with an anxiety disorder. I was so tense for so long, that I disrupted my Serotonin levels in my brain. Serotonin is the chemical that keeps you stable and happy. When it doesn't flow freely, you get paranoid and anxious. I spent my days after that flight--whole days--having one long anxiety attack.

I would take walks in the area parks to get over it, to keep my mind distracted. Walks turned into jogs. I started taking Paxil to get the Serotonin levels back to normal, and I jogged to stay active and to clear my head of paranoid thoughts.

They say that sharks have to keep moving to stay alive--if they stop moving they die. So I adopted the shark as my "spiritual mascot", if you will. I felt that I had to keep moving to stay alive, to get better. And I did. I fought my way back to the state of well being I was in before everything got weird for me. And I haven't had an anxiety attack since.

I guess the point is that sometimes phobias can be overcome, if you look at them from a different point of view.

Yeah, sure they can be overcome.
It's just something that’s inside of your head.
You just have to 'want' stop being afraid of things… but then again; easier said then done. ;)

Anyways.. getting back on topic… I'm not that fond of heights.

He lucklighter.
You said that sharks need to keep moving to stay alive.
This is a common misconseption.
It's been known for a while that sharks sometimes lay on the bottem of the ocean and rest. As long as they keep water running trough there gills they can lay there for hours.

Water. Fresh or salt, it doesn't matter. I am absolutely terrified of swimming in murky water, especially if my feet can't touch the ground. Nor I can go in rowboats, canoes or anything that might tip over.

Heck, I can't even walk next to the edge of a pond. 'Cause I just know that a alligator or crocodile is going to burst out and grab me. I blame all the nature programs I watched as a child. I always empathized with the wildebeest. D:

I was also wondering if anyone here has ever heard of Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a kind of therapy which uses movement, thought and speech to create rapid change in a person's emotional state and sense of overall confidence and well-being.

Proponents claim that lifelong phobias, depression and other negative states can be mastered in minutes using these techniques, although, as is the case with all other types of therapies, they may not work for everyone.

The subject is too involved to explain in detail here, but if you are interested one highly popular program that uses NLP is Anthony Robbins' "Unleash The Power Within," as well as his first book, "Unlimited Power." Robbins went on to adapt the techniques of NLP and other "peak performance" strategies into his super-successful "Personal Power" courses and seminars.

I used to have two phobias. First of all, spiders. I got a spider bite when I was a kid (around 6-7) and I still remember that hurt like hell. Now I am just moderatly annoyed by their precesence. They simply are ugly and repulsive.

The other one was to fly. The first time I got on a plane, I was flying to Germany, I went through a bomb alert before takeoff. They made all us passenger open their baggage in front of the police one after one. Afterwards nothing was found and we could leave some hours later. Many passengers didn't board as they were afraid to get on that plane, but I did. Being my first flight, every strange noise was of course... irritating.

I could fly just with a little bit of anxiety before flight, in the worst cases, throwing up before long flights, like coming to USA.
Curious enough, 9/11 made this phobia completely disappear. On the morning of 9/11 I was supposed to take a plane from Boston (an AA coast to coast flight), and that plane was just like half an hour later than the ones who went into the Towers. Kinda like dodging the bullet (also considering that the morning before I was in NY on the observation deck of WTC).

After that, I simply considered that one bomb alarm and skimming 9/11 make statisticly impossible to go through anything else regarding planes. This little bit of rationality made my phobia completely disappear and now I don't have anything left of my fear of flying.

When I was younger I had none, but as I get older: a slight fear of heights if I am looking off a balcony, of drowning (though I still love to go in water) and any kind of creepy crawly or snake. I don't mind seeing one so long as they are not touching me in any way, shape or form.

Deep water and heights for me, sometimes the dark. Like when the power goes out in the middle of the night during a storm, I don't go near the windows for primal fear of the lightning outside illuminating something absolutely terrifying. I guess the idea of it being just you inside your dark home with nothing but endless blackness outside really gets to me....especially since I live out in the country.

I blame the Stephen King book Cycle of the Werewolf for this (and Watchers by Dean R. Koontz to a lesser extent) which I've read since I was a kid; the part where the farmer and his wife hear the werewolf killing their pigs in the middle of the night and the husband goes to the window and sees "something, he cannot tell what" go running off back into the woods.

Bridges. When I was little, we would walk over a little wooden bridge and dad told me the crocs would get me:P. Apparently his dad gave him a fear of chain saws, lol. I was doing much better with bridges until last summer, when the bridge we crossed 4 times a day collapsed (I-35). I'm having to take deep breaths and pray to cross them again.

Underwater large creatures. Sharks, dolphins, squid, whales *shudders*. It's gotten better, because they *are* so fascinating. I've made myself look at the aquarium part of the zoo. Whales scare me almost more then sharks actually. I think Pinocchio and Fantasia (flying whales!) did me in.

And of course, mummies. This one cleared up suddenly a few years ago, but I used to get horrible nightmares if I saw a picture of one or one on tv. The first young Indy episode in Egypt gave me a doozy of a nightmare. When I was about 6, we were in a museum in Virginia and looking at the display. For some reason, I thought it was going to come up and chase me, so I took off running, screaming my fool head off;). Once I found out I didn't have nightmares anymore, I started taking out books on them!

I'm afraid of fire alarms. I have problems with loud noises and bright lights, and when I was seven, I had to lead a group out of the local public library when the alarm rang. I've been in multiple hotels where the alarm has gone off. One of them was a hotel which, when it had been under different management, had suffered from a famous fire. I don't think I've ever been more scared of nothing than that day - the alarm went off due to smoke from a pot in the kitchen.

heights. or more exact i guess it would be of a fear of falling from heights.

thats why im not much a fan of roller coasters, i wish i was and im trying to get over it but theres something about it that makes me nervous. same thing when climbing a ladder, it gets in my head. its weird though. i really dont have any history from falling off something. nothing traumatic at least.

im starting to get over it though, which is a good sign but im still trying to place it safe too.

a rather more terrifying thing would be kidnapping. i was in middle school, 6th grade, and middle school is a strange stage. so it comes around feb. (my birth month) and this girl Carlie Brucia is missing. now i didnt know this girl but she went to my school and she was in the same grade as me. after a while this case started to progress. especially when there was actual video of the man holding a gun to her and dragging her down the street by the wrist.

a week later shes found dead by a church. me being such an emotional person tried to comfort others the next day of school, but come along lunch i just loose it. the whole thing caught up to me that this girl, my age, was murdered. and that scared me for a bit. i actually hade nightmares of it, only happening to me.

i still look back at that even though its been 5 years now. i never knew something like that could happen so close to home, you know?

mummies, moths, the dark, drains, fans , falling from heights, deep dark water, there'll be a lot more but im too tired to think :whip:

basically i'm scared of stupid everyday things and not what everyone else is scared of

hahah has anyone got any funny stories involving their phobias???
for instance i once ran into a member of staff from b & q because i ran out the toilets so fast, looking at the ground screaming because there was a big fan above the sinks hahahaha

Fish heads, they just creep me out. I hate going to the lake and finding dead fish on the shore, or floating in the water. Live ones bother me a little, but the cold dead eyes (if they have any eyes left) really bug me. Funny thing is, I like to eat fish.

A healthy respect for spiders and snakes, lived on a farm for the last 10 years so that sort came naturally.

Sharks and deep water, they sort of go hand in hand, but where I live is where the white pointer sharks roam, and we had a shark attack at a beach where we swim in summer a couple of years back which kinda sealed it for me. I haven't been out over my waist since then and I'm always looking for that dark shape in the water lol.

Heights, had this one since I was about 12 and finally figured out how far down it was lol. I have a tendency to push this one to the limit tho and have been absailing and climbed all the tall tourist stuff, and I'm dying to try a real roller coaster.

Flying, or rather take off and landing, I'm convinced we are going to crash in a fireball, no matter how good or bad the take off or landing is, and any turbulance of any kind just sends me totally rigid. Flying to Tokyo on my own a few years back was an exercise in panic management.

When I was four, a donkey tried to bite me. My mum told me it thought I was an apple because I was wearing a red coat, and me, being a very naive and gullible four year old, I believed her. Now, I may have been stupid, but I'm not afraid of donkeys.

I am, however, terrified of sharks. Curse you, Spielberg - Jaws should not have been a PG!!!

Last week, our newspaper had an article about strange phobias. The one that caught me off guard was Arachibutyrophobia, fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of you're mouth.

I'm petrified of spiders.

Pteronophobia
Pteronophobia is the irrational fear of being tickled by feathers. Certain childhood events, such as tickling a baby, can lead to this fear as the child may feel trapped. It is related to the fear of tickling.

There are indeed some weird phobias. No so long ago there was something in the newspaper about a girl who had a 'button phobia'... yes, she's afraid of buttons.
And i found this one: Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. Fear of long words.
wouldn't be fun though..

Though I am not scared of heights, peering from a very high place (generally sky scrapers) or envisioning doing so (if viewing one on tv/seeing in a book) I tend to go very light headed , jellified and suddenly feel very humble. Again they don't scare me, but make my body and mind react oddly!
