I was talking to an employee at my local Blockbuster.(Assnt' Mangr (Jason))
...Our conversation....

IndyJohan: "Have you seen Indy on DVD yet?"
Jason "Yeah but I prefer the VHS".

I was quite suprised by his comment

IndyJohan "can you re-interate?"

Jason "The touch ups that they did take away from the classic look and it looks a little bit cartoony".

IndyJohan "What about the Dolby 5.1 surround sound? And I don't think Indy has looked better"

Jason "The sound does not make up for the remastered version, I like the classic film look"

What do you guy's make of it? Do you feel the same way?

I think the guy's off his nut. The touch ups were subtle to say the least. This is someone who wanted to have a problem with it before it came out and then looked and looked until he found something.

It's not like we're talking the Star Wars Special Edition or even E.T.s walkie talkie for guns program. They got rid of the snake reflection and rubbed out some horrifyingly bad matte lines.

Cartoonie? Maybe the main DVD menu sequence but it's supposed to!

I think the classic film look is alive and well in the DVDs

Hes talking rubbish. Next he'll be saying he prefers cassettes to Cd's.

It can always be the personal nostalgy feel. Or perhaps he has some funny memory associated to his VHS tapes that does not come up when watching the DVDs.

There is a small part of me that wonders if he had a progressive scan DVD player and a higher resolution televison: would feel the same way?

I have both and can tell you that the remastered DVD are a damn sight better than the VHS.

Does the Blockbuster guy still call new CDs dropped by music artists "records"?

he is obviously ignorant of quality!

sure he can love the 'grainy' quality a VHS gives you, and that could make it a better nostalgic experience for him. But the quality of the picture is a lot better on DVD, and most people do value that. As do I.

I have to agree that the dvd is superior to the vhs. Both the sound & the picture are a whole lot better.

I have an 8 year old TV and the DVDs running through my XBOX look better than the VHS. I'd love to see what a progressive scan DVD player could do on an HD TV!

I watch it off my Xbox too...my only complaint is a low humming sound the xbox makes

I have an XBOX also and I know that sound. It gets annoying when your trying to listen.

I'm selling my movies, and someone bought my Indy VHSs. I agree, DVD is better, but VHS is better than nothing!

I use to use my PS2 to watch my DVD's, believe me when I say...Get a DVD Player, the XBOX and PS2 do not give the DVD experience justice!

I'd gladly take my widescreen DVD's over my fullscreen VHS's any day.

Yeah, but as I stated I have an 8 year old TV. I'd need to upgrade that too in order for the DVD Player to do much more. And like I said, it still looked way better than the VHS and that's good enough for me. The quality won't degrade over time either. That's the main pro of DVDs.

It's people like that who I just want to reach across the counter and punch because they're being deliberately difficult in order to be a bit different.

I must admit that I said to my boyfriend that I missed the vintage quality of my old Raiders VHS.

The DVD's have made the movies look like they were made yesterday.

Was this available in widescreen?

I remember when McDonald's did the trilogy, one video a week for, like $5, with every burger purchase. I still have a copy of Raiders (I think, or was it ToD?) which I bought...

I just watched The Temple of Doom on DvD not too long ago and I have to say it looked better than the VHS version. But it all depends on how someone likes the way they see a movie I guess. I know some people who still like VHS... crazy!
j/k lol.

I liked the VHS boxes (from the box set) better....they said the year the film took place and had a much cooler description of the film.

as far as film quality the DVDs win no contest

I definately like the DVDs better not just for the improved picture, sound and extras, but mainly because I can jump to my favorite scenes. This is a real PITA to do with VHS tapes. However I don't have the heart to get rid of my VHS tapes of the trilogy. Sentimental, I guess.

I have an idea, let's have a mass burning at them! We shall all gather into some suitable place (like Berlin), put up a big fire, throw all the VHS cassettes we have with us in the fire... and greet welcome to the new, bright future belonging to the DVDs.
