In Temple of Doom, Willie saids to Indiana Jones 'You're going to get killed chasing after your damned fortune and glory?' Indiana replies 'Maybe, but not today.' How can Indiana have such confidence after witnessing the human sacrifice. Why would anyone bother to get the stones, let alone save the kids?
Because he's character in the style of the great movie adventurers of yesteryear - everything he does has a touch of the hero in it. We can't place logical motivations on everything he does, because he is delibrately written as being larger than life. What's interesting about that, of course, is that Ford still makes the role very human.

From my personal experience: Check this out -Bio Page (http://raven.theraider.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5437&perpage=15&pagenumber=1).
If you have to do sometthing and it HAS to get done you have to put fear out of your head.

Because the film would have really sucked, if he said:
Your right! Let's get the hell out of here!!!!

During the fight on the tank when Indy goes over the cliff, I thought he died. The film had already run for a long time. The title of the movie suggested that it was Indy's Last Crusade. I thought it was so cool when he said to Elsa "I'm like a bad penny, I always turn up." It seems that Indy is invincible.
Well, that is the nature of the hero in fiction and film, yes.

ROTFL! That's gotta be one of the funniest things I've heard in a while!
Indy's life long dream (up to the end of this movie [and still sort of is to an extent]) is to find the biggest and bestest artifact ever. This is probably Indy's biggest, by FAR, dicovery he's made. Seeing as he's not scared of much anyway (runs out in front of a tommy gun, jumps out of plane on a life raft, etc. etc.), I'd say he's not going to pass this oppurtunity up. Getting to the stones and then leaving would've been a walk in the park. Torturing innocent kids to death for the benefit of some evil scary guy would usually get at least a glance from a hero.

There are a lot of plot holes in these movies... I think that if Lawrance Kasdan worked on the script it would have been a better flick.

Didn't Uncle George have issues with him thanks to Empire'?

What are the plot holes in these movies?
Does it really matter if there is any?

This- "Maybe, but not today"- is definitely not a plot hole. What happened fit the character, the theme, the movie, etc. etc. to a tee.
There might be plot holes, but this is not one.
whatever it is, it's a great line, along the lines of, "i'm making this up as I go."
