Deadlock

I was watching Raiders the other day, and there was some dialogue that really jumped out at me that I’d never noticed before. It is in the scene at Indy’s house, and Marcus is telling Indy that they want him to after the Ark.
Marcus: You know, five years ago, I would've gone after it myself. I’m really rather envious.
Even though I’m with Joe Brody on the somewhat questionable comedic metamorphosis of Marcus in Last Crusade, I think that there are some important facets of Marcus that are revealed.
Marcus has guts. He really wasn’t phased by being captured by Nazis. “I’d rather spit in your face, but since I haven’t got any spit.” Marcus’ decision to go with Indy to Venice seems to indicate that he used to be a “field man.” Also, Indy trusts Marcus with the mission of going after the Grail (with Sallah’s help).
Now when you combine these with Marcus’ acceptance of Indy’s methods, and the line I mentioned above, I think that it is a very possible scenario that Marcus was used to be LIKE Indy earlier in his life. To me, this better explains the close relationship between him and Indy. There is more than simply a business relationship between an "obtainer of antiquities" and his buyer. Or even a friendship between Indy and a friend of his father’s.
I would like to suggest that when we meet him in Raiders, it was only recently that he settled down to the life of quirky curator after years as an "obtainer of rare antiquities" himself. (Which might explain why he can get lost in his own museum…).
I’m not sure if this is an angle Jones universe that has been explored… What do y’all think?
