Raiders of the Lost Ark Special Edition DVD? -
09-02-04 Posted by Aaron
In the September issue of Total Film Magazine, they feature a special on Steven Spielberg where they have reviewed all of his films including Raiders of the Lost Ark (which also includes a cool Raiders poster). They also have an interesting interview with Spielberg. In the interview, Spielberg spoke about Indiana Jones 4 and later on in the article, the magazine mentioned the possibility of a Raiders of the Lost Ark Special Edition DVD that may include the shot-for-shot remake of Raiders! Here is an excerpt from the magazine:
Total Film: "So why embrace Indy 4? Surely you could knock that out in
your sleep?"
Spielberg: "It's not for money or success. It's for good times. I've always
said that I had the most fun in my life making those three movies with
George (Lucas) and Harrison (Ford)."
Total Film: "It's been a fair old wait."
Spielberg: "It's a very good story. It's worth living that long to see."
In Total Film's review of Raiders, they included a quick paragraph about Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation possibly being included on a Special Edition DVD of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Keep in mind this is a quote from the magazine, NOT from Spielberg: "The ultimate compliment still awaits. Paramount is considering including their homage on a Raiders DVD Special Edition. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase Indy-pendent cinema."
A Raiders Special Edition DVD? Believe it or not this isn't the first time we've heard this. Back in February of 2002, Dreamworks Fansite spoke with Frank Marshall after a screening of the Special Edition of E.T. where he had this to say: "We're thinking about doing this with Indy [Marshall] said, bringing it back out and spiffing up the effects." As you know, the special edition of E.T. which included new scenes and improved special effects was released on DVD a few years back. Could they be doing the same for Indy?
We're not sure where Total Film got this information about a Special Edition of Raiders. It could have been based on information Spielberg gave them (not very likely since they did not quote him) or it's just speculation on their behalf (the more likely scenario). We'll file this under "R" for rumor right now, (especially without any official confirmation or quotes from Spielberg) but remember: anything can happen. And even though it wasn't new info, it was still good to hear Mr. Spielberg enthusiastic about his work on the Indiana Jones films when asked about Indy 4.
You can read the full article on Spielberg and his films in the latest issue of Total Film Magazine. You can also check out the full quotes from Frank Marshall at Dark Horizons.

I don't see the point in doing this. They already have Raiders of The Lost Ark out on DVD now. If they want to release the Adatption they could do it without having it featured on a Special Edition DVD. Perhaps include it as an extra on the Young Indy DVDs. Or perhaps they could have a Special offer form in the Young Indy DVDs. But the Young Indy DVDs and get the Adaption movie for 5.99. And the only way you can get it is to buy the YIJ dvds.

From what I heard a while ago, RotLA:SE has been worked upon for quite some time. Originally it was going to be all three, but with the cool reception of ET:SE, Steven got cold feet and suggested that the DVD set contain only a few minor touchups.
However, Lucas never lets an idea go and work on the project never was really shut down...just scaled back a bit.
Anyway, the rumblings that I am hearing hint towards a release of RotLA:SE into theaters with it coming out on DVD shortly thereafter. Based on the response to that one, the other two may or may not follow shortly.
Lucas may see it as a way to gain a new audience for Indiana Jones IV as well as his YIJC.
There is also some talk about an Indiana Jones, Jr. TV show. Not in the same vein as YIJC, mind you, rather it would be a high quality action/adventure show. (Relic Hunter would be the closest example that I can think of. Though I would not call that show high quality.:))
Hmmm, I should start a new thread about this stuff...

How many of us will fork over the money for yet another edition of Raiders?
NOT ME. There's only so much I can take, and being taken advantage of repeatedly is not something I intend to let happen. I have my Raiders on DVD, and that's all I need.

Look at it this way. We at least got (almost) a completely untouched edition of Indiana Jones on DVD. Most Star Wars fans would kill to have such a thing for the SW original movies.
Many fans have suggested that Lucas release both the SE & "OE". Many fans would also buy both sets, so that way they can enjoy both versions without being forced (no pun intended) to see it one way or another. I would like to think that this is Lucas' line of thinking right now.

Indeed, your point was so good I wanted to copy it. No more to the story, sorry.
I'd buy it in a heartbeat just so long as that Raiders Adaptation is on there.. perhaps some other bonus features on the disc would surely make it a must buy...... Another plus would be to drop that lousy Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark title.

What if the special edition merely meant that they would include the deleted scenes we've been pining for all these years?
Like the first kiss between Indy and Marion, Sallah about to get shot by the Nazi, Indy lashing himself to the sub with his whip.
That is the kind of special edition I could get behind. Either a cut of the movie that incorporates these deleted scenes, or an addendum with these deleted scenes (with optional commentary by the Big Three), along with an optional commentary on the feature. I'd also like to see the full screen tests for Tom Selleck, Tim Matheson, and Sean Young on a Special Edition DVD.

Commentary by the Big Three would be enough for me.

If it's Raiders, I'm buying it. I'd be completely thrilled to see what other stuff they can fit on a SE disc. There has GOT to be alot more stuff out there. I have a press kit for the Making of Raiders and it states they recorded over 60 hours of film and over 100 hours on audio. I've also heard from those who have claimed to have either been to the archives or know someone who's been there, the stuff we've been shown is just the tip of the iceberg.
I'm ready for more a.s.a.p.!!!
I find it interesting to see who the real fans are here and who are not.

Hmmm. If this is in reference to the this dvd, then I think you should rephrase your comment to "I find it interesting to see who the real suckers are here and who are not"
They should have included all the extras in the current dvd set. I HATE when they release these "super, extra, limited, special deluxe edition" dvds.
Just another way to squeeze a few more bucks from the fans.
(oh, and if your comment meant something else, then please disregard my rant ;) )

Your point is completely understood. However, all the companies are guilty of this, not just LFL. I'm sure that even though Lucas says he's never going to release the original trilogy on DVD, he will soon and say it's by popular demand. Just another way to bring in some cash, which pretty much goes right into his pocket.
I too feel like a sucker when getting a dvd for the 2nd or even 3rd time, but the fact is if I want something on there I'm gunna get it. It's worth it to me to have that extra material I've been waiting for. If it's Raiders material, I get it nomatter what. That's just me.
VP, thank you. Your welcome is much appreciated.

Hey everyone, this is Agent5. He has one of the most amazing collections of Indy gear ever and if you're lucky he may even show you a picture of himself. ;)
Well folks. It's really nice to see that my news from TIE has made it to a thread.
Personally I would love to see a Special Edition version of Raiders come out on DVD. I wonder if this version will include all of the cut scenes that have been mentioned in the past. That would be really cool and if they do that, I for one would love to see Temple of Doom and Last Crusade get the same treatment. :D

Wow...you had to know that is was coming!
Remember the big blow out before the DVDs were released regarding Lucas/Spielberg vs Paramount on selling the DVDs individually vs a 3-pack?
I think Spielberg is just trying to reopen THAT can of worms...
Personally, I think they should have used all the extras with the DVD's that we bought.
A Special Edition is just a marketing ploy to sell more DVDs but whatever....I'll end up buying it too if they do!

I would buy it to complete my collection and to see what steve has done... however, if he pulls another E.T. I will be seriously angry. I would like to see deleted scenes, a more in-depth documentary, and even more enhanced graphics/sound.

Skip this... then buy the box set with all the four (yes, four) movies (extended editions) with full audio commentaries of everyone significant from Steven Spielberg to Pat Roach, fifty hours of extra material including all the removed shots PLUS remakes of the shots they thought they'd shoot but after all didn't, twelve discs of extras, including the ultimate "This is how Indy's pants were sewn together", extra presents like a bottle of grail water, Akubra Federation, piece of stone from the Temple of Doom, a bust of Short Round and inflatable George Lucas.

Slow down there rookie. She didn't want to sit on anything. Go back and re-read it.
Westford's quote was that she would like to sit in on the recordings of Pat Roach's commentary (should there be one) because the insight he would have would be educational. more or less
If you would take more time to properly read each persons response and think about how you would like to contribute, and then to respond with something more that "cool", "never thought of that", or "what do you mean?"; I am certain you would see much of what you are missing.
Remember, every post you make reflects on you. How do you want to be viewed here at the Raven?

I apologize. I misread the response and didn't notice "in" until now. Thank you for the head's up...

I would gladly welcome a Special Edition if they dropped the "Indiana Jones And The..." part. Nothing would delight me more than to have a DVD on my shelf that reads "Raiders Of The Lost Ark"
