View Full Version : Villians, why did it have to be villians...

Indydan13

My favorite villian is Col. Vogel (obviously) because he is tough, sarcastic, and eager to kill a few "American Conspirators", and he likes to keep a "hold" on things...

Belloq. Period.

Just for conversations sake, why?

Put me down for Mola Ram. The guy poisoned Doc Jones with the blood of Kali.

PS: you should have Lao Che and Hitler on this poll.

That I should...thanks for the idea.

I voted for Toht.
I think he was the coolest villian and I especially love the scene when he comes to Marion's bar. The music when he just opens the door of the Raven tells you that you're in for something sinister... MWAHAHAHAHA! http://www.indygear.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif

Indydan13

My favorite scene of Toht is when he was screaming like a girl (along with Belloq) as the Ark was opened. That was funny, I always laugh at that scene. I bust up laughing everytime the 3 get what's comin to em...Melt, cave, and BOOM!

Rob "jones"

lol how do you have a favourite villan ;) shouldnt it be most hated or something?

Indydan13

favorite to hate, favorite to cheer....what's the difference. Without a villian, there would be no movie...and that would be a tragedy! ;)

Webley
09-18-2004, 11:30 AM
Never real thought of Chattar Lal as a real villian he was more like a lap dog for Mola Ram. A thorn in Doc Jones side.

What do you mean, "supposed to sound French"?

He says on the DVD bonus that he took a french accent to play Belloq. Where!? When!? He's sounds english to me. Actually he sounds everything but French. It's probably better that way though, the French accent sounds pretty ridicules if you ask me.

Also I don't know if you guys know this but before Paul Freeman, a French singer Jaques Dutronc was asked to play Belloq. he refused (he hardly spoke a word of english).

Belloq has the most depth...and incidentally, the word is villain.

Why do you say that?

For me, Belloq is the most humane of the villains. He feels sorry for Marion when she is thrown into the Well of Souls. He doesn't kill Indy during the bar scene because of the children. He only uses the Nazis to get the ark. In some ways he's a nicer person than Indy...

Funny you should say that; as I rewatched RoTLA on TV a couple of weeks ago I was thinking how GOOD Paul Freeman's French accent was :) It's fairly subtle, which I think is fitting for the character, a man who has probably spent a lot of his time away from his native country. Also, the French accent is particularly prone to being badly imitated, an effect which is greater when an actor tries to lay it on thick.
I certainly don't think he sounds English, though. Listen closely to the way he pronounces words like "I", "my" and "idiot", for example....
And yep, he's my favourite villain :) Like Chattar Lal said above, he has a sympathetic side. I like Hitler too (not in real life though!) if only because the autograph scene was so funny :)

What?!? Elsa didn't make the list??? Who needs depth when you've got curves like a road through the Austrian Alps??? :D

Welcome to the Raven, Jordana, where the mods are old and the wine is somwhat questionable... Or was that the other way around? ;)

Indydan13

Those curves are sharp enough to kill a man (in Elsa's case...literally). Welcome Jordana, to the Raven. I'm fairly new myself, and this site rocks!

Deadlock, I unfortunetly have not been here long enough to poke fun at the mods but I neither agree nor disagree ;)

I always thought Belloq was really a frenchman (Paul Freeman i mean) until I was about 12 (2 years ago)...

I would have voted for Elsa if she’d been on the poll.

I only didn't put her on because I didn't consider her a villian

I mean, she did bad things for bad reasons, but for a good cause on the wrong side...and I forgot

Not to mention I can't edit the poll for some reason...

Belloq absolutly. I likes the fact that the did put some humanity into his character, which you can see for instance whenever Marion is pushed to Indy into the well of souls.

Welcome Jordana!

Actually I've relistened to his accent and I'll admit that he sounds Europeen. He's just not pronouncing the 'R' right (he rolls them or something). Maybe he speaks like a French that spent his whole life in england. My dad who works in the US has a very stong french accent, it's horrible!

Thanks for the welcome everyone :)

Vaxer, I suppose someone in Belloq's line of work has travelled widely, so I think it's probable that his accent has been diluted/distorted, like you say :)

Elsa....I liked her myself, sort of a semi-villain, I suppose. She was certainly an improvement on the other blonde Indy girl *shudder*

How about the Monkey? Does he/she count as a villain? It was pretty cute for a baddie :)

I'm starting to like this Jordana girl (you ARE a girl, right?). Welcome aboard, have you met the droolers, yet? If not, you will. Trust me. ;)

Anyway, I voted for Toht because out of all the villains, to me he represents the spirit of the old cliffhanger villains--dark trench coat, dark hat, creepy voice and laugh, beady eyes, and there is more of an air of mystery about him than with Belloq, who wears his heart on his sleeve.

Toht is just so...sinister.

EDIT: By the way, what about Panama Hat? Why isn't he on there? Or Pat Roach's German Mechanic?

Rumpled Fedora

Yea!
Another vote for Toht.

Indydan13
09-21-2004, 04:45 PM
Panama Hat and The Mechanic are not on here because bad as they may be, they had minute roles that were more of obsticles than crucial parts of the story. Chattar tried to put a blindfold over Indy's eyes, Toht gave Belloq crucuial evidence on the ark ("heil hitler" *revealing burn on hand*) and so on and so forth. If in that case, you want to mention them, then we might as well mention all of the Nazis, thuggees, and other assorted bad guys as well.

Belloq - he's the closest thing Indy has to an arch-nemesis.

Jordana
09-29-2004, 08:17 PM
True-it always seemed to me that he was the only villain who was more or less on Indy's own level, a sort of darker version of Indy himself, as he pointed out during their conversation in the Cairo bar. None of Indy's subsequent adversaries were as well matched to him, in my opinion.
I heard that Belloq was originally supposed to appear in ToD as well, until Lucas and Spielberg changed their minds and opted for a different story. I can't help but feel that they made a mistake. Not only would he have been a better villain, but it would have added some more continuity to the trilogy. I'd like to have seen Marion again in TLC also...why dipose of the best characters after just one film?

Starchaeologist
09-29-2004, 10:19 PM
Belloq was a fine antagonist and had a great portrayal by Paul Freeman. Rivals make great villains and this character was written superbly. The Cairo bar scene between Jones and Belloq is one the most inspired dialogue pieces of the film!

IAdventurer01

Belloq: Not sure what hasn't been said!

I guess just because Belloq is the closest to Indy's equal. Everyone else, tough, but not nearly enough.

...what the hell does that mean?

*Thinking back to the trilogy endings*

ROTLA: Belloq's head exploded; he's gone for good. Toht's face melted, leaving him with as much a chance of returning as Belloq.

TOD: Mola Ram fell how many stories, bouncing off rocks, and into a croc-infested river. His chances for survival are about a billion to one, and only Jones could overcome those odds. Chatter Lal was kicked out of the Raven, so I don't see him returning anytime soon. Oh...wrong CL!

LC: You all saw what happened to Donovan! And unless there was a nice, soft bed at the bottom of the crevice, Elsa will be underneath that temple for eternity (unfortunately).

You mean as long as Elsa is on the bed, too, right? ;)

Or are you just looking for a nice, soft bed in general?

Perhaps you should try a Sealy Posturepedic. Or a Craftmatic.

Haha...I meant w/ Elsa. I don't think I'd fall down any crevice just for a bed.

But enough about crevices, beds, and Elsa...getting off topic, sorry.

So whatdidyamean by the "wait until Indy IV" comment? I'm confused, or was that the point?

Isn't that the case with all Indy villains?

Belloq is established, Nazis decided to follow Hitler as well as Donovan and Elsa, and Mola Ram and all other thuggees undoubtedly drank the blood and became coockoo for cocoa puffs...
