I don't think you should be using the word "influence". Perhaps Indyesque. Some were before Indy and some were after. Nice collection though, would you be able to list them I can't see them all. I am sure I have not seen all of them and I might like to.

Tennessee - Read the GUNGA DOOM article I wrote for raider.net. It's brand new at the top of the page. You'll be familiar with the film after reading that.

Trust me.

Re: ...time to whip out the big guns!

Greetings Indy fans - this is my first post.

Nice list there, SKAbatula. With some exceptions, it pretty much parallels my
own. Stay tuned for questions about a few titles, if you don't mind. :)

Let's not forget the Republic, Mascot, Columbia, etc. serials that were the
root inspiration for "Raiders". I highly recommend "Jungle Girl" and its sequel
"The Perils of Nyoka". Loads of setpieces and stunts that were redone for
"Temple of Doom".

If people are interested, I'd like to post reviews of the films that are not on
the above lists. Perhaps they could be included on the "Influences" pages.
I enjoyed reading the articles by IndyFrench and although I disagree with
a few details here and there, they are well written and make a good starting
point for anyone interested in the genesis of our hero.

Having been a fan since '81 when I was 14, I have a decent collection of
films, interviews, etc. on VHS. I can also burn DVDs so I am well up for a
trade, tree or whatnot.

Happy to have found you whip-crackers,
Stoo

Thanks Stoo and welcome to the Raven bar...first drink's on me! It's nice to see more adventure movie watchers around. It seems like a lot of members are too concentrated on Indy to notice other gems in the "beat the bad guy to the artifact" genre. Not to sell IJ short, as the trilogy beats the competition by a landslide, but those not familar with Secret of the Incas, Gunga Din, etc. are truely missing out on some great movies.

*To TR.net's staff*
Along with Stoo, I would also be interested in creating Indy Influences for any of the above movies that I'm familiar with. It would be my honor to contribute to the #1 Indy truck stop on the internet highway.

Thanks for the welcome, Brandon - and I'll take that drink. Family label? :D

It's unfortunate to think that unsatiable Indy fans have not seen some of the earlier films. Is it because some viewers don't enjoy watching b/w movies?
For audiences today, films of yesteryear must becoming harder to watch
due to production values, acting, etc...but they contain great moments.
Eat up the Indy trilogy and devour Young Indy to your heart's content (I do), but for adventure's sake, don't stop there.

A brief overview would include:

"Gunga Din" - a must-see for storyline and visuals only. The Cutter character
has little resemblance to Indy other than his search for treasure.

"Secret of the Incas" - the Holy Grail - enough said. A campaign should begin
to get this officially released. I have 55mins of it in French (I live in Quebec)
and would love to have the whole thing in English. I remember watching TV
one day in the early 90s and saying, "What the heck...is THIS?". Naturally,
I began recording and have been thankful ever since.

"Valley of the Kings" - a true, high-ranker for its undeniable Indy-esque qualities. Not an exciting cliffhanger but a slo-mo Indiana Jones type story.
Recommended viewing for fans.

"The Spiders" (original title:"Die Spinnen" 1919) - the grandaddy of them all.
Adventurer with hat. Inca temples. Secret passages. Booby-trap.

and of course the Republic serials...

Again, thanks for extending the welcoming mat and I look forward to reading
your reviews!

I took your recommendation and searched good 'ole ebay for The Spiders and found:

The Spiders, Part 1: The Golden Lake (DVD released 1999, original 1919)
Marrying war time climate of fear and subterfuge with the period fascination with exotic plots and locations, Fritz Lang took the favored genre of cliffhanger serials and crafted a complex tale of international intrigue and mystical espionage. A dazzling serial adventure complete with Inca treasure, human-sacrifice, wild chases and close calls, this early work inspired the "Indiana Jones" films sixty years later. Kay Hoog the Indiana Jones like wealthy playboy adventurer jets off to Mexico after finding a treasure map inside a bottle and is closely followed by secret crime underground, The Spiders, led by beautiful and seductive Lio Sha. From hot air balloon escapes, to sub-aquatic lakes of gold, Lang utilized all of his visual and narrative skills to create a compelling series of adventures. As the first part climaxes, the genre shifts dramatically to a western and sees the protagonist on horseback desperately trying to flee Mexico with the sun priestess. An early glimpse into Lang's themes of secret societies and the intersection between crime, morality and mysticism, Part I of THE SPIDERS, is a seminal example of early film and a precursor of Lang?s seminal crime films of the 30's through the sixties.

All I needed to see was Indiana Jones above, and I knew it was worthy of a purchase. I can't wait until it gets here to watch it.

The Spiders

Congratulations. I hope you're not disappointed. It is crude but in its day was
extremely popular. Judging by your enthusiasm and the haste in which you
acquired the thing, something tells me you're going to like it - just don't set
your expectations too high. The image quality should be superior to the VHS.
For silent film viewing this is LONG but rewarding, especially the end!

What's interesting is the title change. The Kino Video version I have has Part 1
as "The Golden Sea" rather than "Lake". The original title is "Der Goldene See".
I checked info on this DVD and can tell by the running length that it should
contain Part 2 "The Diamond Ship" also, with the above-mentioned finale.

Parts 3 & 4 "The Secret of the Sphinx" and "For Asia's Imperial Crown",
were never made. Alas...

I highly recommend this to any Indy fan who can handle silent, b/w movies.

Looking forward to SKA's review, :whip:

Well I received The Spiders dvd today in the mail. Now all I need is some time to watch it. You were right about Part 1 and Part 2 being on the dvd. It contains both The Golden Lake and The Diamond Ship. I can honestly say this will be my first time watching a silent movie...can't wait!

Would anyone earnestly recommend Tomb Raider 2? ...for a free rental?

Keep in mind, I HATED the first one... but I'm looking for an Indy-Lite for tonight.

Good bet or should I look elsewhere? Perhaps rent another old Bogart film or something?

Oh, whatever. I LOVE the Stargate movie and franchise! Can't wait for Devlin's two sequels to come out! (For those of you that don't know; he is negotiating to make two more sequels [ignoring the TV show's continuity] with Russell and Spader to complete the film trilogy. Hoorah!)
