Has anyone ever read the short cartoon strip "Young Indiana Jones & The Mountains of Superstition"?

It appeared in The Young Telegraph here in the UK in the early 1990s but I haven't come across scans of it on the internet anywhere - as far as I know it was a one-off unique but official creation for the Daily Telegraph's young people's weekend supplement. (The Plantation Treasure and The Princess Of Peril were adapted for later comic strips too.)

If I can get around to it, I'll try to scan them and submit them to TheRaider.Net for everyone's parousal. :p

Anyway, old man Waltz, a character I used in my 3rd prize story for TheRaider.Net fan fiction comp (http://www.theraider.net/features/c...est_winners.php)
first appeared in the "Young Indiana Jones & The Mountains of Superstition" strip...

I'd be interested to know if anyone's ever read these too! :D

I have never heard of this, but I would defininitely like to see it.

Please scan and post them!

take place? If you have time, please scan and post anything you can.

Well, this is a fairly old thread, but I thought I'd ask if anyone here has any more specific info about these comic strips, like the actual dates they were issued?

So no one has any info on these? :( Man, these are even harder to track down than stuff in the rpg magazines. If someone had dates these were issued, it probably wouldn't be too hard to track them down in library archives or even get them through interlibrary loan. :D

The Indy Comics were part of the Young Telegraph's second run, which started in October 1990. The release days were all saturdays - I'm not sure if that means the Young Telegraph was part of saturday issues of the Daily Telegraph or part of the Sunday Telegraph.
Anyway, I got my hands on some of them:

No 1 (6 October 1990) (http://robert.kontechs.de/jones/YoungTelegraphNo1.png)
No 2 (13 October 1990) (http://robert.kontechs.de/jones/YoungTelegraphNo2.png)

No 25 (23 March 1991) (http://robert.kontechs.de/jones/YoungTelegraphNo25.png)

No 29 (20 April 1991) (http://robert.kontechs.de/jones/YoungTelegraphNo29.png)

I also have issue 34 (25 May 1991) which does not include an Indy comic anymore.
Hope those infos help somebody to find the other issues - in that case, please keep me informed. Sadly my secret plan to persuade BrodyIsDead to sell me his issues does not seem to work ;)

Rob Dangerous, proving within 5 posts to be one of the most valuable members of the board. Thanks again, man.

This also shows that the "Mountains of Superstition" (easily argued as the most sought after since its the only original tale) ran in twelve parts, once a week from October 6 - December 22, 1990

Does anyone know who wrote and drew these serials?

Yeah, it seems the influence on Mountains of Superstition (setting, characters) was primarily the flashback/prologue of the Last Crusade. Definitly no Young Indy Chronicles influences apparent anyway.

Of course, the other two were based on the Young Indy novels which started to come out just before the show started.

Did anyone have an email for BrodyIsDead? I'm wondering if he could be convinced to scan the missing pages. At least for the Mountains of Superstition since he seemed to indicate in his posts (from 3 years ago admittedly...he may not even have these anymore) that he owned all of those. I know Rob Dangerous had mentioned something about trying to convince BrodyIsDead to sell him the ones Rob was missing, so if you have an email contact and wouldn't mind asking him to provide some scans, I know it'd be doing us all a favor if he's able to.

Hi, guys,

apologies for the lack of communication on this thread from me in the last few years (can't believe it's three!) - I've still been active on the boards but just didn't think anyone was interested in these gems of stories from my first posting about them back in '05... Anyway, I've definitely still got them in my possession (they belong in a museum!) and have been liasing with Rob D and DIrishB by PM so will scan the missing strips from those that Rob's already posted earlier in this thread and let everyone see them complete... :hat:

Sorry again for the long delay - it wasn't as long a wait as Indy IV though, right?

Got a PM from BrodyIsDead concerning the Mountains of Superstition scans:

He's hard at work building his own Indy centric site, and will be hosting the scans there and said they should be up in a few weeks. Can't wait!

Also, some other very interesting info courtesy of BrodyIsDead...apparently while digging through his Indy stuff, he came across another UK exclusive tale called "Indiana Jones and the Treasure of Monte Cassino". I'd never heard of this until then, but then again I hadn't heard of the Mountains of Superstition tales either until happening across this thread. He'll be posting scans of those on his site as well.

I know we're all looking forward to this. BrodyIsDead will post links to his site once he's got the scans posted. Can't wait!

I hadn't heard of it either. He just said he found it when digging through his old Indy material (since he's putting together his Indy site). He did say he was pretty sure it came out only in the UK, so thats probably why it wasn't known over here in the US. Looking forward to that one.

He said it seems to take place during WWII, which makes perfect sense since the Battle of Monte Cassino took place from January to May, 1944. So I assume it takes place sometime in those 5 months. We'll know in a few weeks when he gets a chance to post them on his new site.

Can't wait to check out what other goodies he'll have on it.

Rob Dangerous and BrodyIsDead both came through big time in scanning those comic strips.

Looking forward to the Monte Cassino scans very much. Especially since its one of the few Indy tales that seems to take place during America's involvement in WW2 (the others being the German novel "Indiana Jones and the Lost People" by Hohlbein [August, 1943] and "Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny" comic by Dark Horse [March, 1945]), or at least relate to it. I always wanted to see more tales of Indy's involvement in WW2, to mirror his younger days in WW1. Of course, I could be wrong about its timeline placement, and am thinking more and more that I am after doing more research. I was hoping it takes place during the Battle of Monte Cassino (January - May 1944) to see more of the Indy in WW2 thing. Of course, it could just be a reference to a treasure from the monastery located in the Monte Cassino hills in Italy. This is more likely: Indy searching for treasure in a run down, ancient Abbey. If thats the case it could take place pretty much anytime before, during, or even after WW2 and the Battle of Monte Cassino.

Hi DB,

It's definitely set during the German occupation of Monte Cassino AND therefore WWII - so I think your analysis at first was correct - anyway all will be revealed once I get the scans up in a few weeks - it's an 8-page tale btw, think it was given away with the UK Indy fan club of the early 90s when Last Crusade came out... (I found it on eBay just a couple of years ago)

Also, the name in the comic is spelt Monte Cassina with an "a" at the end rather than an "o" - not sure if this is cos of the Italian spelling? (or perhaps just a typo by the comics makers...)

I agree btw that we have to see more adventures of Indy during the 1939-44 period, especially now we've had some blanks filled in from Indy IV with his involvment with the OSS and Mac during that time...

(That sentence is getting repetitive, isn't it?)

Lucky dog. I was psyched just to have tracked down a copy of the West End Games Indiana Jones Adventures RPG adventure book on Ebay. Now onto my search for the original French Young Indy novels (all seven of 'em) and the French Bagheera comic "Indiana Jones et le Grimoire Maudit / Indiana Jones and the Cursed Book of Magic". That will pretty much cover my Indy fiction collection. At least until new stuff is released. ;)

Also, the name in the comic is spelt Monte Cassina with an "a" at the end rather than an "o" - not sure if this is cos of the Italian spelling? (or perhaps just a typo by the comics makers...)

Thats interesting. I'll have to look into that.

EDIT: Just did a few internet searches, and nothing came up with "Monte Cassina", but there was plenty on "Monte Cassino". I'm assuming its as you said, either an Italian variant spelling I couldn't find any info on, its a mis-spelling, or in the Indy universe Monte Cassino is called Monte Cassina. That last one is probably unlikely.

I agree btw that we have to see more adventures of Indy during the 1939-44 period, especially now we've had some blanks filled in from Indy IV with his involvment with the OSS and Mac during that time...

Exactly. Indy's involvement with WW2 is something I've been dying to see covered much more. Thats easily the most under-chronicled period of Indy's life (except his first 8 years as a kid, which don't need chronicling), and the one probably most ripe for adventure set against an extremely dramatic and historically relevant war. It just seems like a lot of missed opportunities, at least so far. I know this is probably because Lucas wanted to leave those years open for future stories, but at this point I don't think he has to worry about stepping on future movies' toes concerning establishing Indy's adventures during the WW2 years since they'd obviously be set at least a decade after (if made at all).

I say let the comic and novel writer's have at it. Not sure if the novels have been selling well, but I know Dark Horse's recent comics and Omnibus editions have been selling respectably, if not impressively.

Cool, just read your blog and Indy 4 review. I pretty much completely agree with your view on it (despire others' harsh criticisms): it was definitly an Indy movie. Sure, the dialogue/characterization stumbled a bit, and the CGI ants and Tarzan swinging were completely ridiculous, but I barely blinked during the movie. It was fun, adventurous, and returned Indy to the big screen: ALL GOOD with me! It also worked much better on my second viewing...not sure why yet.

Much like yourself, I've been a big Indy fan since I was a kid. I was born the same year Raiders was released - 1981 - so didn't discover and see the films until a year or so after Last Crusade was released (its my favorite of them all as well) on my best friends beat up old VHS releases. But from then on I was hooked. It was a bit after that when the Young Indy Chronicles started coming out, and I started watching religiously. I began picking up the spin-off media (novels, comics, video games, etc), and the train hasn't stopped since. The release of Crystal Skull brought me back around to the Indy bandwagon since it became less of a priority during high school, college, and the early portion of my 20's. But I've rediscovered my fondness for all things Indy ( ;) ) and loving every second of it.

Thanks again, BrodyIsDead, for bringing those impossible to find portions of your collection to fans. Also, keep an eye out...once Stoo returns from vacation I'll begin posting (and he'll begin translating) the next French Bagheera Indy comic. Not sure if you've read those, so if not check it out.

Yes, thank you both! Irish is right, how many times can we say it? He is also right about the jaw dropping.
I just got back from Rome, S.Italy & Sicily (the whole area of this particluar campaign) and saw Irish's PM message.
Picture Dietrich at the Ark opening for some visualization on how I reacted. The news was like a four barrelled shotgun!:gun:

1) An unheard-of, U.K. comic strip unearthed in the rummaging of a fan's collection. WOW! GREAT NEWS! Jaw drops.
2) It's a WW2 story. HOLY SHIZNIT! AMAZING! Eyes start popping out.
3) It the Battle of Monte Cassino aka the Battle for Rome. I WAS JUST THERE! Head implodes.
4) The father of a very, close family friend fought there with the Axis (he was Italian) so I've always had great interest
in this infamous battles. One of hardest in WW2. TOO MUCH. Head explodes.

That'd be a good idea. I cropped and adjusted them a bit when I copied them to my comp (very simple), but if you have a program that can intensify the coloring or something on them that would probably make them look a little better, along with the wrinkles, etc.

Either way, I'm still loving these. I swear, I've been leafing through and reading the twelve strips at least once a day since Brody scanned them. Its like they're a long lost part of the Indy Expanded Universe collection and I'm welcoming them back into the fold. ;)

The UK rare comic "Indy & The Treasure of Monte Cassina" is on my fan page now:

http://b.c.carden.googlepages.com/allthingsindy :whip:

As I've said elsewhere, apologies for # 4 which I realise now is a little blurred (had to use my digi camera to take photos of the pages rather than scan as the infernal machine's gone on the blink!) - I WILL retake the pic for #4 over the weekend and repost next week, but didn't want to keep anyone waiting more than they had to! Think it's still readable anyway

Awesome. #4 is very readable (especially when I print it out). Though a cleaner picture would be appreciated!

Enjoy, y'all! Have a good weekend...

ps I've also realised my confusion over the Monte Cassino/Cassina spelling extends to me not reading it properly - it's actually "Cassana", but I'll sort out the spellings on the page properly next week too!

I noticed that too. I'll do some research when I get home (at work now) to see if there are any real life historical references that might help pin down the chronology of it (when it takes place). If not, I assume it was a mistake or intentional change on behalf of the writer/editor.

Thanks BrodyIsDead...really, thanks a lot, man. This is great!

Fantastic, BrodyIsDead! To date, this must be the rarest Indy comic out there.
Thanks a million times over.

Indeed. Nowhere was this available in present day before now, even on the internet. Brody is definitly the Indy of rare Indy tales. ;)

So, after reading the story and doing a bit of research, I think the best time to place the Monte Cassana tale is January, 1944. The reason for this is because January marked the beginning of the Battle of Monte Cassino (the real life location is referred to as Monte Cassino...the Indy version is Monte Cassana...not sure why) started in January of that year. But, on January 17, the monastary (where I presume this tale takes place) was destroyed by American planes (they assumed the Axis powers were using it as a base). Since Indy enters the monastary in this tale, I think the best timeframe is sometime in early or mid January, but before January 17.

God...I need to become less obsessed with timelines and chronologies.

;)

And I've got no problems with the scans being cleaned up if you have the time to do that and then send me them -
can you do that through PM here? If not I can PM you my email addy... Below is a example of what I had in mind. It's reduced in size but I have a larger one that matches the
dimensions/resolution of Rob Dangerous' images and minus your original scan. (Added just for comparison.)
If this meets your approval, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you the others when done.:D

Stoo, that looks amazing! I am very impressed. I thought it might bring the color back a little...but that looks like its brand new. Wow...it even got rid of the minor creases! Amazing, man!

Thanks, DIrish. The "it" is yours truly, heh heh.:D I painted over the creases and had to enhance the blacks & whites of
each individual panel, balloon, etc. What am I using? Photoshop. (Been working with it for 15 years.) Some of the other
pages have creases but not as large as this one so they'll be a bit easier to do. If I tweak Rob Dangerous' scans then the
whole collection could look pretty uniform.

It's too bad the comic changes format midway through. Weeks 1-6 are 2 strips of panels while 7-12 increase to 3 strips.
It would be cool to make a little mini-comic book of this!

No offense meant. When I said "it", I meant the program you were using. Photoshop is awesome!

I agree. Still, it looks really, really good. I can't wait to see the rest of the strips once you've "fixed" them up some.

Agreed. Thanks again to BrodyIsDead for sharing these rare Indy tales with us...and for Stoo for taking it upon himself to touch them up a bit. You guys are great!

I wouldn't mind if it was kept smaller. The old ones were filling up my entire screen and then some (but maybe it's my monitor being stupid?). And WOW, that is just incredible what you did. It looks like someone actually recolored it. BrodyIsDead, thank you for getting the ball rolling, and please let Stoo clean up the rest of them too. (Pretend this smily is gaping in astonishment and not screaming in terror)

Hi, everyone,

sorry it's been an age since I said I'd get the two remaining Young Telegraph comic strip adaptations of Young Indy & The Plantation Treasure and Young Indy & The Princess of Peril up on my Indy fan page, but finally I'm pleased to report they're up there now - here's the link again:

http://b.c.carden.googlepages.com/allthingsindy

Enjoy, y'all! Hopefully this'll help to fill a gap till Rob MacGregor is able to release his Staff of Kings book! :p

I've also added a few photos onto my page now of my various encounters with Indy so far...

Just like to give a big shout out to DIrishB for hooking me up with the US copies of the new Indy "Lost Adventures" books

Take it easy, everyone!

Hi, again, everyone,

apologies to anyone who visited my fan site and found there to be some skewy page formatting and the odd link that didn't work - they're all fixed now, though, so enjoy the read... :hat:

If there's anything else that anyone comes across that looks wrong/doesn't work, let me know either here on this thread or via the email link on the page:

The Indy Comics were part of the Young Telegraph's second run, which started in October 1990. The release days were all saturdays - I'm not sure if that means the Young Telegraph was part of saturday issues of the Daily Telegraph or part of the Sunday Telegraph.I don't know about where you live, but around here Sundays are in color and Monday through Saturday are usually in black and white.

Hi, everyone,

just thought I'd better let you know that my Indy fan site with the scans of the Young Telegraphy comic strips mentioned above is down temporarily as I experience some "technical difficulties" with GoogleSites - formerly GooglePages which I was using to host the pictures of the strips...

I'll do my best to restore them soon! And will post on this thread again when it's all sorted

Happy New Year, y'all ;)
