This friday I am going on a two week trip to Athens, Greece. I am bubling inside and about to burst of anticipation.
This oughta be a big advanture. Bunch of students (all guys) are let out of the cage called normal life and for two weeks anything goes. Greek women be ready, we are coming.
I will tell you about that trip more in three weeks but for now I have something else to ask.
The reason why I am writing this is that for this trip I bought a hat. Kinda like Indy hat, but not realy. It doesn't have such a big curve of a brim in front. But it is in that area of hats.
The question that I have to ask is what goes with that kind of a hat? There is a lot of people here that have such a hat. So what can one wear with a hat? Is jeans alowed? What kind of a sweater, shirt, shoes and stuff of that nature.
Do you people wear your hats everyday? I mean on the street. Couple a days ago I wore it to college and a lot of people told me that it is cool hat but there was one question that was asked a lot: Why hat?

You need to use the Edit button so you don't double post. That makes you look like a post whore.
Mostly dress clothes are appropriate with that type of hat, I believe. Perhaps a button-up shirt with a jacket and khaki pants.

Sounds like a fun trip. I don't wear a lot of hats, but if I were going on that trip I'd definately take my Indy fedora and satchel bag. You'd really stand out and people would be able to tell you're an Indy fan. Plus, a hat like that is good for keeping the sun out of your eyes and off your face.
Have a good trip!:whip:

You need to not go around sleeping with people for money, that makes you look like a whore.
Sorry, couldn't resist :D
Oh well, I would be pretty useless if something like this wouldn't occur from time to time...
I wear my fedora whenever I can. I don't have any specific dress code, anything goes.

That hat would look great on you.

Could this be called Fedora if it is not an original Akubra Federation (and it's not)
And one more question. Do you people shape your hats using steam or do you let profesionals do it? I did it today and it seems preaty easy (like buter actualy), but still I do not quite know what I am doing. Should this be done by profesionals only?
All soft felt hats are fedoras. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_(hat)
I shape mine myself with steam. As long as you don't burn the hat it will be fine.

I wore my hat to Greece, almost all the time. In Israel and Greece, you get smiles and people will tell you you look like that fellow, what's his name?
So, it's great to wear a Indiana Style Hat in Greece.
Hope you have a good time! :whip:

What about wearing a fedora in a car? As a driver or a passenger?
Well when I wear mine while sitting on the back seat the driver usually tells me to take it off because it's blocking his or her view to the back.

Is fedora as pain in the a$$ for you as it is for me when it comes to the hairstyle?
Whenever I wore it my hairstyle was totaly distroyed. Is it just me or is this common problem?
In my case it makes a little spike on the middle of the forhead and glues the hair on the side of the forhead. It is realy uncomfortable situation to take the hat off and leave such a hair underneath. I never saw that happen to Indy.
Well I don't have a hairstyle so that's not a problem for me. And I don't usually wear my fed for very long periods, only for a couple of hours.

couple of hours
It's enough a couple of minutes for a hairstile to be distroyed

Sad to say, I don't have a fedora but always wanted one... I did have one when I was younger. My Dad was working for a shopping centre and part of the uniform was a Australian style fedora. It was similar to the Indy version except the crown was a little lower and the band was braided. My Dad didn't like wearing it to work coz it was too hot for him to work in it and gave it to me because I was an Indyfan. It broke up over the years because we travelled often and moved up and down the Australian East Coast.

What is a proper way of cleaning a fedora?
I was told by a woman who sold me the hat that washing is out of the question. So is drying using fan or radiator or any heat source.
Am I suposed to take to dry cleaning. Where I come from there is no specialized shops for hat maintance.
Is this maybe something that I could do myself?

Nice hat.
When I clean my fedora, I just put a strip of tape on it and rip it off to get all the dust and stuff off. When that strip is too dusty I simply get another one. Easy Peasy.
As for when to wear it and what to wear it with, just wear it proudly and shamelessly at any time you see fit. Indoors and outdoors. In churches and in court houses. At funerals and at weddings. And if anybody gives you any grief for it just shoot them and walk away. That's what I do.
I don't know if Greece is hot enough to have significant risk, but always remember to wear your hat at all times when traveling in a hot climate. It will greatly decrease your chances of heat stroke.
Why should you clean your fedora? The dust is screen accurate.
Get yourself a nice hat brush. http://www.toddscostumes.com/indy/indiana_jones_hat_brush.htm

Brush is OK for dust but what about stains or stuff of that nature.
Does one greacy stain mean the end of the hat? (my hat does not have a stain, I am just asking)
Do not forget that Indy went through the sewer and came out with a perfectly clean fedora.
He didn't wear the hat in the sewers. You could get it professionally cleaned at a hat shop.

I watched that scene again today and you are right. He did not wear a hat in the sewer but where did he leave that hat. When he arived to Venice he had it on but when they came in the library there was no trace of the hat.
One more thing. I did not notece this before but it's an interesting thing. When Indy and Elsa went down to catacombes they started looking at the drawings on walls.

What's this one?
INDY only has to give it a quick glance to know.

"He did not wear a hat in the sewer but where did he leave that hat."
D'uh.... The 'library' was "Holy Ground"... when he came in the door, he took it off like you're SUPPOSED to, and likely hung it on a hook, or put it on a hat-shelf that would have been VERY common in those days....
Later, he went back and got it....

In Raiders, when Indy is runing away from Hovitos he jumps in the water. His hat then becomes distorted to the max. In real life is that the end of a fedora?
I am asking that becouse I usualy end up in such hard to believe situations, and I would like to know if that could be the end of the fedora.
ClintonHammond

It could probably be saved... in that day-and-age it wouldn't have been cost efficient though.... It likely would have been MUCH cheaper to get a new one....

You have to look at what the hat is made of. A good hat is 100% beaver felt, which holds it shape about 1000 times better than rabbit. All hats start the same basci shape. When you wet fur, the mold it and let it dry it will hold that shape, so it does not matter how wet or distorted your hat becomes, it is easily "reblocked" Clinton is about as wrong as a human can be. Even int he 30 and 40's high end hats were not cheap and were taken care off. To reblock a hat is and was a fraction of the price of a new hat. I have a very good friend who owns a very, very high end custom hat producing factory in Durango Colorado, Bounty Hunter, he makes hats for many, many movies and talking to him about hats is lilke watching a well done history channel show. I own severl of the hats and have worn the all over Africa, Europe, you name it. I have had them mangled to where I thought I would have to replace them. Steve was always able to make them look better than new.
if you want to see more about "old fashioned" hat production check out www.nathanielsofcolorado.com/hatmaking.php pretty much everything they use for hat making is original

Do you ever get a question, why do you wear a hat, or what does that mean, or stuff of that nature.
I am kinda sick of those questions.
I want to wear a fedora but very often I do not want to answer to these questions and I simply decide not to wear it. It atracts too much atention.
In Greece one turist took a picture of me just becouse I had a hat. Whole Acropolis full of stuff to photograph and he takes a picture of me wearing a hat.

I'm more likely to get questioned on the rare occasion that I'm NOT wearing my hat (for instance, if I've recently been out in heavy rain and have had to re-scotch-guard my hat and it's at home drying)

I hate wearing a fedora and having people yell YeeHaw and other things of that nature. Its a fedora not a cowboy hat, get an education. There is a difference....
