View Full Version : Aussie Indyfans exist?

Violet Indy

In one thread, one Indyfan reckons that there are more than Aussie Indyfans than I think that are members of the Raven. I doubt this, so prove me wrong! Even if you're not Australian, feel free to post on this thread if you want to ask questions about this little dark corner of the world. I will answer them no embarassment guaranteed. Oh and for my sake don't ask if we act like Steve Irwin aka the Croc Hunter. He's a one off freak of nature!!

Hmm, well, have you met a fellow Aussie who was an Indy fan as much as you?
Have you ever been out of the country? Can you compare Australia with the rest of the world? How cold does the weather get where you are? Does Australia have any unique slang terms besides the stereotype ones I hear? You know the ones... "Throw another shrimp on the barbie!"

For your 1st question, no. For your 2nd, unfortunately no. I can't really compare. My comparisons would be based on conversations with foreigners. The part of Australia I live is very hot. During the summer, its on average about 35-40 degrees Celcius. Unique sayings...hmmm... "She'll be right, mate". There are others but I can't think of many. I don't really use Aussie slang.

There are a couple Australian Indyfans at Club Obi Wan, http://www.indygear.com/cow/. They have guys from at least Sydney and Melbourne.

Yeah, but I'm not much for talking about merchandise only obsure merchandise. That was why I made a thread on obscure merchandise. There's just so much of it!!
And what can I say, I've certainly proved that there are very few Aussie Indyfans in existence! Though I must say I would have liked to have made a thread on the upcoming AFL season. GO THE BRISBANE LIONS!!:whip:

I have always wanted to go to Austraila. :D

My questions are, which type of area are you in? Do you ever come into contact with snakes or giant spiders (brrrr)? Does it surprise you that there are people from other countries that want to visit your country?

BTW, I have a great deal of respect for Steve Irwin. He's a great guy. ;)

I live in a state called Queensland on the mid east coast of Australia. I'm about 1000 km north of Sydney. Yes, I have come into contact with snakes and yes spiders as big as an adult's hand. The 2nd most venomous spider, the Redback Spider also happens to call Queensland home. The most venomous calls Sydney home (the Funnel-Web Spider). To be honest, yeah I'm surprise anyone would come to Australia at all. It's very boring. The best place is Sydney. Dont bother with the outback. It's all desert and bushland. Very boring.
I respect Steve Irwin's for what he does as an animal activist but he's isn't very well respected here. His zoo is pretty crap.

I graduated 2 months ago. I've travelled around Australia during my childhood. I've been to nine schools all up. In Queensland (the state Brisbane is in) you graduate at 17 and get your licence at 17. High school was never mu8ch fun for me. The best part was the formal night (aka Prom) at a upper class golf club. High School sucked because the school I graduated at, it was my first year there and well, I found it hard to find friends and stuff...anyway. Our school year is different because of our seasons being the opposite of the nthern hemisphere. We have summer vacation during Christmas. Let's face it, no matter what part of the world you live in high school will suck. How long have you got til you graduate? Either way good luck!!:)

What do you mean? With reference to the Raven or my actual life? Coz I've moved around so much it's been hard to keep friends, however I actually am having a day out with a friend that I haven't seen for four years until Sunday. We meet coinceidently at lanes next door to each other at ten pin bowling on Sunday.

But what if you meet someone from the Raven? :)

i foresee two possibilities. one, coming face to face with a Raven member would put her into shock and she would simply pass out. or two, the encounter could create a web paradox, the results of which could start a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the internet-reality continuum, and destroy the entire world wide web! granted, that's a worse case scenario. the destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to indiana jones related sites.

it's a sad fact we simply can't be sure. but we surely will take the utmost precautions. you will be banned from this site until we have a written confirmation that we are out of danger. good luck for you.

That made me laugh.

Hey, Violet. What does "She'll be right, mate," mean?
Have you ever seen a Great White Shark? Tell me about some encounters with crocs and snakes and spiders and dingos that you've had. Please. And anything else that's dangerous. Do yu have any tips for not getting killed when I go to Australia? What do Australians eat? What is your favourite film of all time? I think I would go mad if I never left my country, do you ever feel you have gone mad? Have you ever seen snow?

Rest in Peace, Peter Benchley...because you know how many people haven't been resting in peace lately.

"She'll be right, mate" means that if you have a problem and someone says that they're trying to assure you that everything will turn out okay in the end. I've only seen white pointers (that is great white sharks) in aquariums. Though it's been pretty dangerous lately on beaches because of the bait fish ansd beaches were in fact closed for weeks. Which doesn't matter coz I hate the beach!! Too many jellyfish and stingers to enjoy it! Crocs and dingoes I've seen in zoos that's it. Snakes... oh I hate snakes!!!! When I was 7 and helping mum with hanging out the washing we found a 1 metre long snake on the fence. We found out later it was in fact an Eastern Brown, a very venomous snake. Also when I was 6 my school was infested with snakes. Mostly carpet snakes, large but harmless. Spiders... Did I mention I'm phobic about spiders in particular. I was 4 innocently sitting on a swing (fearless at that age) and I look up and see this bloody huge bird eating spider coming down towards me and I ran like hell, screaming. Dad comes out and sees it and whacks it wit what you guys would call a floor flapper (we call that a thong in Australia, tehehehe) and burns it in a bucket.

As long as you're not a permanent resident in burbs, you have very little chance of being in danger. Just avoid the outback. You'll die from boredom, heat and way too many bugs, spiders and snakes!! Go to the cities and you won't have a problem. I live these days, closer to Brisbane City so little and big nasties are no big deal.

What do we eat? Same thing everyone else eats. Food! I'm actually a 3rd generation immigrant. My grandparents on both sides are from Europe post WW2, so I'm more cultured than the full-bloodied Australian that are descendants of convicts from the late 18th Century.

I think my fave film is pretty obvious, it comes in three parts but I can never decide which one I'd like more. And yes, I am going insane being in the same country all this time:o I've never seen and felt real snow. It's been a lifelong ambition:o

You have White sharks in aqauariums?! Are they actual closed-in aquariums? How big are they? I wish we had an aquarium like that in Virginia. We have a big one but it only has sand tigers and nurse sharks in it. I would still want to see a White shark in its natural habitat. I'm sure you've heard of Rodney Fox. I hate the beach too, but because of the sand and the bright, hot sun. It actually looks a lot better when it's cloudy outside or in a full moon. That's just me. I've seen quite a few snakes here in Virginia I don't think any of them were poisonous. We only have two poisonous species. Certainly none of them were a metre long. I have seen plenty of black widows and brown recluses which are very poisonous spiders. The only problem I have with snakes and spiders is that they are hard to detect and they can easily sneak into a shoe or a bag and if it's poisonous, then you're just out of luck. Are you really arachnophbic?

Avoid the outback? Never! At least not until after I've seen it. I just want to experience what it's like to be Crocodile Dundee for a while.

I haven't been to very many countries myself. Just Mexico, Canada and Ireland. I've been all over the eastern half on the United States. Ireland was my favourite so far. I plan to be doing a lot of travelling over the next year though. Germany is almost definite in October. And I don't know when I'm going to Italy, but I'll be going with my friend because his dad lives there. I'm probably moving to Florida soon and after a while I want to go to school in Ireland mostly because it has easy access to all of Europe. Travelling is the best thing in the world. If I never left America I would be insane too.

I have seen tons of snow in my lifetime. Actually that's a huge understatemaent. It's supposed to snow here tomorrow. Snow is fun when you first go outside and it looks nice, but after a while it can make you crazy. Your hands will start drying up and your lips will start cracking and all your shoes will be soaked from walking outside and it's easy to track snow into your house and then it melts and there is water all over the place.

I'm surprised that you have only seen dingos in zoos. The impression I got was that they are as common as water molecules in Australia.

Sorry for the delay. I've been at Film School orientation week and their server doesn't let me go to the Raven. Anyway, we have white pointers in closed in aquariums and at Sea World's Shark Bay on the Gold Coast (An hour from where I live). For the right price, you can swim with the sharks there and there are plenty of diving programs that people can join to go scuba diving and stuff. And yes, I am VERY VERY VERY VERY ARCAHNOPHOBIC!!!!!
Want to experience what it's like to be Croc Dundee? Go swimming in fresh water creeks in Darwin and you'll meet the friendly reptilian locals who consider you lunch!!!
Dingoes aren't really that common where I live. What's common is wallabies (small species of kangaroos) and red kangaroos (largest variety of kangaroo species). Koalas are common in the wetlands whereas dingoes are more common on Fraser Island (an island off the Queensland coast) and desert lands like Alice Springs and Darwin.

That's it. I'm going to Australia. Swim with the sharks?! I'm on the next plane.

I know exactly where Darwin is. I didn't know it was so exciting though.

And lucky you, going to film school. I'm going in May. I can't wait.

You love film school. Playing around with 16 mm film and watching movies and meeting people with the same interests... It's been loads of fun. I didn't say Darwin was exciting. It's pretty boring from what I've heard. However, I hear stories all the time on the news bout backpackers swimming in salt and fresh water creeks and rivers, never to be seen or heard from again.

Watch out for drop bears! They are carnivorous marsupials that reside in treetops, and attack their unsuspecting prey by dropping down from above and slashing the victim to death with their razor sharp claws.

Actually, we're just not important to America, that's why we're not on the news. Yet, we have our problems too... just not as huge as everywhere else...But, I'm not completely happy living in Australia. There's no where interesting to go, no one dresses up when they go out, everyone binge drinks, there's no culture.... no film industry to speak of.... I don't suppose you ever heard of the Cronulla Riots? That was a pretty horrible thing. Since I recently revealed that Russell Crowe is in fact a Kiwi, I reveal others and inventions, which are Australian but is mistaken for something else and vice versa.

Who is Australian in Hollywood?

Peter Weir (director of 'Witness')

Anthony La Palliga (I might have misspelt his last name, the lead actor of 'Without a Trace")

Sydney Pollack (director of 'Sabrina'- the remake with Harrison Ford)

Hugh Jackman (Wolverine)

Baz Lurrman (director of 'Moulin Rouge')

Cate Blancett (Was in LOTR trilogy)

Toni Collete (actress, 'In her Shoes" with Cameron Diaz)

Geoffrey Rush (Capt. Baboso, Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl)

Erroyl Flynn (Born in Tasmania, believe it or not!)

Who's not in Hollywood but is mistaken to be Australian:

Russell Crowe (He's a Kiwi)

Sam Neill (Kiwi)

Nicole Kidman (She was born in Hawaii, raised in Sydney)

Inventions and Creations that are Australian:

the Blackbox (Invented by an Aussie and moved to the US for funding)

Felix the Cat (Created by an Aussie who was low on cash and sold it to the American animation company that still owns Felix today)

Mary Poppins (Not ENGLISH!!! Written by an Australian female writer in the early 20th Century and was published in Australia and eventually caught the eye of one Walt Disney, who fought to have the novel turned into a film til the day he died)
