Just got "Hollow Earth" and "The Secret of the Sphinx" from my local book store. I will start reading them this week. Wanted to know how you rank which Indy book/author is better. SOTS is kind of short as well. Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts. :whip:

Congrats on getting some Indy books!

I love the entire series but Max McCoy is my favorite author and most other fans share that same thought. The two books you bought are fantastic and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Rob MacGregor is great too and Martin Caiden's two novels are good but probably the weakest in the series.

I recommend picking up all 12 books and reading them in order if you get the chance. Hollow Earth and Secret of the Sphinx are two of the best and I hope you enjoy them.:whip:

I love McCoy's work in the Indy series, but for me he is equal to Rob McGregor, coz McGregor was the first author's work that I read and I thoroughly enjoyed "Seven Veils" and "Dance of the Giants", but I also love "Philosopher's Stone" and "Hollow Earth."

Thank you both for your replies. I noticed that both books are dated bofore the movies, I believe 1934. Are there any books that have Indys adventures after Crusade(1938)?

All of the American novels are set before the films (1922-1934). The German author, whose name escapes me at the moment, has some books set after the films but unfortunately they've never been translated into English.:(

There are comics by Dark Horse that are based after 1938, such as the Fate of Atlantis adaptation of the video game and The Spear of Destiny, which also has Indy's Dad in it.

IndyT, a word of warning! Don't read Secret of the Sphynx until you've read the other three (Philsopher's Stone, Dinosaur Eggs, Hollow Earth) as the stories follow each other. ;)

I'd have to say that Max McCoy is by far my favorite author of the Indy novels. Most books I really didn't care for, to tell the truth, but "Philosopher's Stone" was the peak of Indy novelizations, I think. The others have their shining moments, particularly "Dinosaur Eggs" and "Secret of the Sphinx", but "Philosopher's Stone" was the best all around. In my opinion, "Hollow Earth" was the weakest of the McCoy series.

Hmmm, the only Indy books I've read so far have been by McCoy. Sphinx was one of the them, an while I think the story was mostly entertaining, I think he is a terrible writer. To me he is just bland and uninteresting. His dialogue seems weak, unnatural and a lot of "he said, she said". I hoped maybe Sphinx and Dino Eggs were just a couple of bad eggs amongst otherwise good books. But they're supposed to be among the best?

I had hopes that McGregor would be better, but after these comments, I don't guess so.

Actually Abe, I like McGregor better than McCoy. He got the characterisations down pat. The only McGregor book you should avoid "Interior World" unless you like fantasy genres.

I thought MacGregor was pretty good too. The Genesis Deluge is probably my favorite Indy novel at the moment and he did a good job revealing a lot of Indy's past.:whip:

As fa as straight action goes, McCoy's the best. But MacGregor has the best feel for the characters in my opinion. That being said, Philosopher's Stone, Hollow Earth, and Dinosaur Egg are awesome. I'm working my way through Dance of the Giants right now...

I'm not minding Caidin too much right now. I'm reading Sky pirates. I just got done with Philosophers Stone, and I loved that. BTW, on Half.com, this is not solicitation, it's something I found months ago, they sometimes have have like 75 cent Indy books. The ones I got were not in the best condition, but great to read!

I liked "The Hollow Earth"; Sphinx was OK. I am trying to get a hold of The Dinosaur Eggs and Philosophers Stone at my bookstore but they are having a hard time ordering it. I wish some more books would come out, especially stories after Crusade. I wonder why there are no books about stories Crusade ? Any thoughts Violet?

After Last Crusade, you mean? I know there are comics by Dark Horse, but other than that I suppose George wanted to leave it open. Sometimes it's better to not know the future adventures of a hero, sort of thing. Like the fact, that we don't know when he dies. Probably something along those lines.

We do, however, know that he lives into the 1990s, and that does take a good edge off of a lot of adventures, because you're absolutely positive he won't die. Or, if he does, you know he's coming back.

Yes, but........ Why do you think they got rid of the Old Indy stuff from YIJC??? There must be a reason for that. Maybe Indy dies in Indy IV. :gun:

Well, this is the right thread to say it...

Drum roll...

I HAVE FINALLY COMPLETED MY INDY NOVEL COLLECTION!!!!!!!!

I finally got a copy of "Peril at Delphi" with some help from a friend of mine. So I have all of them from "Peril" to "Sphinx"!!!!

What literature I still have to collect? Well, I still have to complete my Fate Of Atlantis comic series (missing #2), the rest of Dark Horse and more Marvels would be great. I tried to start collecting Young Indy novels, but I couldn't even get one from the bookstore.

What's the best of the Mccoy and Macgregor books? I've only read one, Hollow Earth and it was not bad. I have The Unicorn's legacy but haven't started it. I've read the movie novels, at least ROTLA and TOD. The Last Crusade I have is more of a kids picture book. Is there an adult novel version of it?

VP

I've read Genesis Deluge (good), Unicorn's Legacy (a bit weird), Hollow Earth (good) and Secret of the Sphinx (pretty good). There's a full novel of LC by Rob MacGregor out there.

Only if you write out a translation with each of the comics. :p

I have read the adult version of LC. It was written by Rob MacGregor. I enjoyed it but, I haven't seen it around in a long time.

I have the full set of American adult Indiana Jones books, and I personally think that MacGregor is the best author, for Indy fans. If you are just looking for an action book to read, go with McCoy, and if you like airplanes, go with Caiden, but if you are an Indy fan looking for a good Indy story, not just action or airplanes, than MacGregor is best.

My favorite book is probably the Last Crusade novelisation, but I'm only about halfway through reading all the Indy novels.:)

Which one are you up to, Viper?

Viper
04-15-2007, 01:05 AM
I read them out of order at first, but now I've started from the beginning, here's the order in which I read them-
Interior World (probably part of the reason I like it is it was first)
Sky Pirates (never actually finished it, I just can't pull myself to read the last 30 pages)
Secret of the Sphinx (after this I started to read Philosipher's stone, but something else came up, and I never even finished Ch.1 )
Peril at Delphi (the first Indy book in a long time that I read)
Last Crusade (I actually started this just a few minutes before PaD, and kind of just switched off reading them, finished PaD first though)
And I am currently slightly more than half-way through Dance of the Giants.

Next, I will read Unicorn's Legacy, and so on.

I do need to do a bookreport on a non-fiction book for school, though, so I must currently read that (I chose to read Generation Kill), but I'll finish DotG when I go to Florida in about 5 weeks, however, (maybe sooner depending on when I finish Generation Kill) and I will definately read at least one or two Indy books over summer break.

It's 1 AM now, so I need to go to bed, I'm really freaking tired.
