Dang, IS this guy for real......
After his best finish last week, he is up in Bridgestone after two days. How many majors do you think Tiger will win in his career? He will over take Jack soon. Jack won 18majors, Tiger is what at 12 now at 32 or 33?!?!?! GO TIGER!

I am not a golfer, I hack a bit and enjoy the links on a hot sunny day as much as the next guy.
With that said, I have been watching Tiger for awhile, and have been studying a bit about golf, it seems I play a few more rounds every year . . .
Is Tiger the greatest EVER! I mean the guy is amazing, all he does is win! He is what 34, 35 years old! He is just so much fun to watch golf. Anyoen here ever see him golf?

I put this right up there with your Jimmy Buffet thread from awhile back. Sometimes I seriously think you've got this strange inverted Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde thing going on.
Maybe the transformation happens when you're traveling on business and you rent a Buick.

WHAT???? What has Tiger done to you? Yes it is a bummer when we actually have a postive role model in sports! Poor guy does nothing but work hard and win. If you like teams who cheat (Pats)< Greedy players who don't care about the fans (NHL), people with chase big pay checks (NBA), and lets not even talk about the MLB . . .
Tiger rocks!

I've never been to Augusta but I've been told that it's really impoverished around the club. I've been in some of the most depressed and blighted neighborhoods in the northeast, but there's something about poor areas in the South that really bring me down. I don't know how I could enjoy a fabricated environment like Augusta knowing the reality that surrounds it.

I love the South East, but you are wrong about this. While I have not been everyewhere in it, I can say, for every great town or city in deep south, it is impoverished around it. Augusta is no exception. That is why there are so many gated communities down there, esp. on the golden coast area.

Exactly – people who either aren’t old enough or don’t know the game well enough are very cavalier about dismissing Nicholas in favor of Tiger.
If TW wins his 5 more majors – which is highly likely at this point – then he’ll have the most Major victories, but that distinction is not synonymous with being the best golfer ever. That is a bigger picture.
Nicholas’s competition was much stiffer in his era, period. This is evidenced by the fact that he won not only 18 majors, but had 19 second place finishes. Tiger has only three second place finishes to date.
This indicates that the PGA field in the 60’s and 70’s had golfers with not only the talent, but also the mental toughness to go toe to toe with Nicholas on the biggest stage. Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller to name a few. JN won 18 majors in the face of a field of golfers with the talent AND heart to stand up to him.
Who have been the folks that have actually challenged Tiger? They’ve been journeyman and otherwise anonymous faces in the crowd on the tour, each rising to their 15 minutes of fame. Bob May, Rocco Mediate, Chris DiMarco….These were golfers with the heart to stand up to TW – but ultimately lacked the talent to come out on top.
What about those who actually have the talent to beat TW? Well, the Michelson’s, Els’s, Singh’s, and Garcia’s of the world fold like a cheap lawn chair when they’re in a two-minute drill at the end of a Major tournament in which TW is involved.
When they actually do beat TW, it’s because he’s been well back in the pack, not because they’ve outlasted and outshot TW at the end of a tournament.
They can only win majors when Tiger is back in the pack, and isn’t among those they’ll have to beat on days 3 and 4.
Factor in the success Nicholas had at advanced age – and with injuries to boot:
In 1986, Nicholas won the Masters at age 46, topping a field that included Tom Kite and Greg Norman – which is still a record for the oldest major winner ever.
In 1998 – Nicholas finished 6th at the Masters at age 58, four strokes from the lead …basically on one leg, after a hip replacement. He finished ahead of golfers such as Ernie Els, Davis Love, … and one 22-year old Tiger Woods, the year AFTER TW had won it by 12 strokes.
Yes, TW’s performance in the US Open on a bad knee was phenomenal, but JN’s 1998 Masters finish was arguably just as impressive. 58-year olds with bad hips are supposed to be on the Senior Tour, not on the radar screen to win PGA majors….and beating most of the best golfers in the world head-to-head to boot.
Finally, consider the equipment then versus now. If JN had the sort of nuclear powered drivers available today, he’d be hitting 330-340 just as today’s best golfers do.
Don’t get me wrong – when speaking of the best all time, TW is certainly in the conversation right along with Nicholas. I just don’t think it’s time to put TW in a class by himself simply because he wins that 19th major. Tiger may be the most marketable golfer of all time, but selling Buicks doesn’t make him the best. People are missing the bigger picture of how great the Golden Bear’s career really was, and are far to quick to dismiss him.
Only the unfolding of history will tell the full story, and TW is still a work in progress.

Well, Tiger haters are out there, I guess to bad. Tiger is a blast, he is getting more kids to golf than any other player has, from different economic backgrounds. Just talk to any pro at any public golf course, the number of kids who are taking up the sport want to be like Tiger! Cool! Yup, his mere presence in a tournament worth an entire rating point by itself, according to the TV execs.
And an entire PGA tour event here in Colorado (The International) was cancelled last year despite a 20 year history.
The reason? Tiger never played but once, turing away sponsors.
Heaven knows where the PGA will be once Tiger is gone....

So Colorado can't hold an event without Tiger? Pretty sad, I wonder how others can do it? I know some people who don't like Kobe in Colorado also.

You aren't the first one to make that comment; many people were disappointed to see it go. With Stableford scoring, it rewarded agressive play and made things very interesting. No laying up when you'd get 5 points for an eagle but zero for making par....
What people don't get is how much the economics of the game have changed due to the Tiger effect.
The ratings delta with / without Tiger is huge, and ratings points equals millions of dollars. This modality did not exist pre-Tiger.
Colorado is a small market, and cannot absorb this hit the way larger markets with more dollars can, or in markets with a more deeply rooted PGA tradtion.

This is too bad. Most folks always took for granted that 18 majors would be automatic - and it's likely that he'll still win his five and catch Nicholas - but make no mistake, this knee issue is serious. He has a stress fracture...and microfractures do not exactly have a history of healing as good as new, even with plenty of rest. It will at least put the brakes on his chase a bit, if not call it into question for the first time. The 2008 US Open showed that he can play in pain, but I don't know that he can keep going to that well and win tournements. At the very least, that knee will never be quite the same.
This just goes to show just what an achivement 18 majors is; things have to be favorable for a very long time, and that includes injuries. Those who don't consider golf a sport should note the training regimen of a fellow like TW, and that fact that you can get some of the same injuries playing golf as a running back. They just happen via cumulative stress rather than sudden trauma.

Perhaps, but T.O. didn't have the sort of microfracture problem that TW has.
TO had a garden variety broken bone...set it, it heals, done.
Microfractures, however, are a chronic problem. They are known for being especially exascerbated when someone "plays through pain"....as TW has.
Exhibit 'A': Bill Walton, who was one of the all time BBall greats, but was never the same after all the stress fracture problems. Kenyon Martin has had very similar microfracture problems that have never gone away completely.

I am grumpy today, so I'll keep this short, so as not to isolate anyone, but I have first hand knowledge of the EMP effect on bone fractures, and interested readers can further develop their knowledge HERE (http://www.ifess.org/Services/Consumer_Ed/References/bone_healing_references.pdf).
