View Full Version : Five things we ALL agree on?

Abe Vayoda
09-23-2006, 09:09 AM
Curious to know if there is anything ALL of the Raveners can agree on. Let’s see if we can find something we all believe and find true. Can even be in a joking manner. If you don’t agree with one, state it, I want to know.

1. At some point, we will all die.
2. Friendship is more important than politics
3.
4.
5.

And I’m spent… :p

1 (Only until we develop viable nano-technology)

2) There are a LOT of things more important than politics....

3) Food beats starving

I think that's five.

Abe Vayoda

The idea wasn't that we really stop at five... just to discuss things that we feel we can all agree with, and maybe see if others have a different viewpoint (like Clinton and his nano-chips).

Johan
09-23-2006, 09:39 AM
I already have a problem with number 1...although I don't have a problem with dying; it's very possible with the return of the Lord, some may not have to pass through death.

you could change number 1 to " We are all going to die (with the exception of those believing in the second coming)

Abe Vayoda
09-23-2006, 09:45 AM
Didn't anticipate that (but I should have), but thank you. I guess it kind've shows that nothing is concrete.

By the way, before this gets out of hand, I'd rather this thread not get into a religious debate. This isn't about what's fact or belief, but about what we can agree or disagree with.

Oh, and i can't change anything, the edit function is disabled on that post.

Johan
09-23-2006, 09:47 AM
I don't expect this one to become a religious debate. No reason to. We can't argue the validity of future events to easily.

Abe Vayoda
09-23-2006, 09:49 AM
I know, but some people like to argue. Which is fine till we resort to name calling.

Anyway another one:

No.
Becuase this was a clear example of what I was saying in my thread and I'm not having fun anymore. You can't even have a discussion with such comments read in this thread. I didn't write my "second coming" comment in this thread to get shut down or even have a discussion. I was simply responding to the topic of the thread. I find it a waste of time to discuss scripture and my beliefs in the end times (and beyond) with people that don't know scripture or have no relationship with Christ...because they are blind, and hardened thier hearts and opinions. I could get discussions like this at several other forums.
All I wanted to do is write what "we can all agree on" as the discussion of topic...and then people go and turn it into flat out "You're and idiot because you're beliefs are not valid" idealism.

Wasn't that part of marriage vows...to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, til death do us part and oh yeah what five things do we agree on?

I personally think everyone can not agree on five things (worth a try but very rare). It's kind of like being married...you can't agree on everything but we do agree:

1. Never go to bed angry
2. Have reasonable discussions and compromises
3. each of us have different likes and dislikes
4. We both like Harrison Ford as an actor(I favor Indy, him Han Solo..go figure)
5. death does happen but until then have fun, be merry, and life your life to the fulliest.

I think most of us can agree to some of these but not all.

My two cents.

See Matt 5:43. You are the salt of the world. When others see you they should see a reflection of what you believe, not contempt. It detracts from the message.

You may have read it but you don't KNOW it. You can't understand it without having a revelation of what's in it...and for that you need a relationship.
Call me delusional, because I can't dismiss they MANY way's he's revealed himself...I've said it many times in these threads before.

See Matt 5:43. You are the salt of the world. When others see you they should see a reflection of what you believe, not contempt. It detracts from the message.
That said, hang in there
I'm not here to preach a message...it's just that every time I form my opionion when asked for, it get's slammed because they don't share that opinion. Again, I never signed up a few years ago for these message boards to defend my faith and beliefs; or talk to people that have thier head in a whole and won't acknowledge any matters of faith and beliefs.
How many people have these boards lost in the past year because of the dull content...the same things being said in the same arguments.
When I say my opinion, Jay, CH and people that don't share the same views: I ALREADY KNOW YOUR VIEWS YOU DON'T HAVE TO KEEP REPEATING THE SAME "FACTS"ext... or SLAMMING MY BELIEFS...blah blah...I don't believe in the supernatural. I GET IT!

It seems to me that the preachers are those who seem to monitor these threads so they can quash beliefs and/or religions and/or opinions that disagree with their own. I personally am tired of seeing pseudo-thoughtful ellipsis dots. But hey... darn it!!

In any case, everyone here knows what the others belief system is on some level. Maybe not the whole shabang (yes, that's a scientific term), but we have the general idea. However, I see much more slamming coming from a side that seems to have the need to validate itself. Sure, I feel the need to validate myself. I've dealt out my share of inflammatory comments as well. That's a technical term too.

In any case, lets not turn this into another belief/religion slamfest... we're supposed to talk about agreeing.

Finn, why don't you ever say "I love you" to an Irishman?
Do that. Then you know.

Well, I won't be saying that to any Irishmen but I almost said it to an Irishwoman when I was in Ireland. Once upon a time, I went in a Woollen Mills across from Bunratty Castle and saw maybe the first or second most beautiful girl I have ever seen anywhere, including on TV. She was what you call 'black irish', straight black hair in a ponytail, light blue eyes and of course being Irish she had pale skin. I have a thing for ponytails, don't know why. Anyways, there was a cop standing about five feet away giving me a serious evil eye and I started wondering if there was some law about bothering people at work in Ireland. Sounds stupid now, but that cop was very menacing standing so close. I ended up just talking about watches with her.

And they lived happily ever after.

I don't want to sound hostile towards anyone, but most of the discussions that cause controversy take place in the archaeology board, and last time I checked, archaeology is science.

Like any science, it's search for facts, not truth. I think we all can agree to that. When the discussion goes into the great unknown, it's really all the same who thinks what. But when dealing with concrete, earthly things, let's all try to stay on the same page... and that means scientific explanations to things that seem to exist, no circle explanations, biased comments or random websites that say this or that.

If you want to find the truth, Prof Tyree's... err, carry on.

The two are not mutally exclusive. I've given some pretty good sources before, and they've been dismissed as "spurious" (that's a fancy word for "You're Lying") because they were researched by Christians.

It seems to me that most every comment made is somehow biased. Scientific "fact" is interpreted through the beliefs, or non-beliefs, or life perspective, or whatever you want to call it. You can't help but interpret science somehow. Whether it is evidence against the existence of God, or evidence of Jesus Christ's mere existence, it will be interpreted through the filter of a persons perspective.

I can see what you're saying when we get total dismissal of so-called facts. However, Science is never, and will never be fact by definition. Theory is the best we can get (and it's pretty damn good, I'll admit). It only gets called a law later on because it holds up for a REALLY long time. There theories emerging even now going up against the "laws" of physics. Line theory and some parts of Quantum Physics are a testament to that.

Science is not the search for facts, nor truth. It's a futile search for a complete understanding of the world, which I believe we'll never really reach. We'll try, and we damn well better try. But we'll never figure out everything. We can only get what we think is damn close. I as a Christian don't have all the answers. Hell, I don't even know exactly what's gonna happen when I die. I'm excited to find out though. I don't wanna die, but when the time comes, I'll be ready, and adventure will surely follow.:hat:

Sounds good to me. Instead of us calling each other idiots for our views/beliefs I'll try to avoid saying the same things when the same threads come up.
However we both know that there will be those threads that require yours and my comments. So maybe we could try just stating opinions instead of telling the other person he/she is wrong...I think this is where it just get's ridiculous. I don't mind hearing you're opinions as long as you keep them YOUR opinions...I know I could make a better effort to do the same.

If ever there was a reason to kill people, I'd say that's it.

By the way, that sounds familiar. Is it from a movie?

I got the idea for this form of self-flattery partly from Han Solo but mostly from Ash of the Evil Dead series. He does a lot of it in A Fistfull of Boomstick too. It's a videogame. The scientific community.... The people who dismiss ther cranks and crackpots you keep dragging out to support your opinions... They are tin-foil-hat wearing lunatics like the same guys who try to say that we never landed on the moon in 1969.... or that flouride in the water is a tool for orbital mind control lasers.... One may as well believe Eric Von Daniken...

Both sides?
You are so self deluded you don't even hardly know what it is you're talking about in the first place, let along being able to see 'both sides'...

And well, there aren't 2 sides to facts....

O.k... there are... there's what did happen and what didn't happen.... you cannot pass off the latter as the former....

fortuneandglory
09-27-2006, 03:17 PM
But there are many ways facts can be interpreted, according, like I have said, to a belief, or non-belief system. You simply decide to ignore everything that contradicts your doctrine of indecision. The scientific community would not dismiss information simply because it's interpreted in a Christian perspective. You think you've proven something every time you speak, but at some point or another, you need to realize that my sources are scientists, just like yours. They just believe in something you don't.

I seem to remember you asserting that Jesus Christ never existed as a man... a well documented and easy to prove figure in history. Who's self deluded now? The point is, you give equally wild assertions based on scientific evidence. Like I've said, there are no facts in science, just interpretations of what we see. You see something different than I do, so don't insult me because I have a see things through a different lens than you.

fortuneandglory
09-28-2006, 10:31 AM
It's because nothing in science tries to prove anything. If you were in science, you know you can't say "proof". It's just what we think explains something. Evidence can and always is interpreted. That's how science advances. Interpretations can be wrong too. In any case, this is yet another thread derailed because people can't stop trying to prove their points, myself included.

One thing we can ALL agree on, the sky has clouds in it sometimes.

ClintonHammond
09-28-2006, 10:50 AM
Once again F.A.G., you're completely wrong.... Science uses the term 'proof' all the time....

"But there are many ways facts can be interpreted"
Sure there are, but not all interpretations are equal or valid.... Someone who interprets Lord Of The Rings to be WW2 allegory MIGHT have a bunch of evidence to support their claim, but the FACT is even JRR Tolkien said it was not.... (Just by way of example)

"Jesus Christ never existed as a man... a well documented and easy to prove figure in history."
I suggest you try reading something other than mythology, kiddo.... yet again, you're wrong.

Yes, that is my number 2 thought

BACON IS GOOD! All must kneel to the awesome power of Bacon!

Man I have just been working. When I go on the road I get too busy to Raven, so I have to miss out on the fun I will be on the oad for the next few weeks off and on so I will be here more in spirit than in reality!

By the way roundshort, I'm a homophobe because I don't like being called F.A.G.? Its insulting to call a homosexual a fag. Do I not have the same privledge as a heterosexual? I don't have anything against homosexuals at all.

Bacon Rocks.

You are confusing me. Are you gay or am I misunderstanding you?

lol, no I'm not. I think that if Homosexuals have the right to be insulted by being called a Fag, I, as a Heterosexual, do to. Clint didn't mean to anyway, so it's moot.

Anyways, peanut butter is good.

Fort, I was talking about clinton being closed minded not you! It is a joke between Temp and I, whenever either of us posts anything that even looks like a racial slur or anything he writes this post about how said we are so closed minded, it always ticks when he does the same thing, fort, u have the right to be called anything u like!

Rock on man!

Bacon is king of all food groups!

I've had this argument with you guys before, and frankly, I'm having deja vu.

obviously having déjà vus isn't the same as learning. :) if you weren't displaying your views in such a strong way, you might get less strong replies.

Let's not encourage recreancy though....

If you're going to have a 'view' or believe in an isim, or ology, then have the stones to REALLY OWN IT! Shout it from the roof-top, for all the world to hear.

BUT...

If you are going to do that, you have to accept that others who disagree with you are going to be JUST as vocal, just as vehement. And you are not allowed to fault them for it.

Fight fire with fire, and zealots with zeal

I had Deja Vu once, it was delicious.

FAG I don't think anyone here has an issue with Homo's. If they did, they would have to answer to Jay. He eats Homphobes for breakfast.

did you have it with red or white wine?

not at all. i just encourage a realistic self-assessment. if he likes to deal without taking, he might want to buy himself a dog. i don't think i'm willing to be his dog. i don't think it takes much courage to say your opinion when you aren't even prepared for somebody contradicting you.

I'm not here to preach a message....... I never signed up a few years ago for these message boards to defend my faith and beliefs; or talk to people that have thier head in a whole and won't acknowledge any matters of faith and beliefs.

again not a critique, but see Matt 10:12-14.
